Minnesota is a 2.5-point favorite @ Cal. I'm inclined to believe that's fair.

Ted Grandy - the actor who played Gopher on the Love Boat - graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English from Harvard in 1970. Gopher's character's first name was Burl. He was a four-term GOP US House of Representative for Iowa's 6th district.

49ers waive kicker Jake Moody, 2023 third-round pick who has underperformed

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/49ers/article/49ers-waive-kicker-jake-moody-2023-third-rounder-21039086.php

The kicker taken with a third-round pick didn’t last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

After two wobbly years, the 49ers waived Jake Moody on Tuesday after his third season began with a wretched performance in a 17-13 season-opening win Sunday at Seattle, NFL Network reported. Moody missed a 29-yard attempt that clanged off the left upright, had a 36-yarder blocked due to poor protection and narrowly snuck in a 32-yarder inside the right upright to tie the game at 10-10 in the fourth quarter.

Good vibes: back (Giants beat the Dbacks 11-5)

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings-nl-west/100487/giants-diamondbacks-scores-recap-logan-webb-matt-chapman-jung-hoo-lee

Monday night was the 144th game of the season for the San Francisco Giants, and at no point this year have I been more curious to see what the vibes would be. The vibes were atrocious through the summer as the Giants inexplicably became the worst team in baseball, seemingly incapable of doing anything well on the diamond. The vibes were impeccable through the end of August and start of September, when they were shockingly the best team in baseball, rattled off 11 wins in 12 games, and emerged on the periphery of the postseason race behind a historic cascade of dingers.

My earlier analysis still stands - the Giants need a team ahead of them in the Wildcard race to get cold, very cold. The Mets may be obliging as they have lost their last 3 games and are 4-6 over their last 10 games (7-7 over their last 14 games).

The Giants snapped their 2-game losing streak as noted above, and are 7-3 in their last 10 games (12-3 in their last 15 games).

The Mets are 76-68 and currently hold the 3rd wildcard spot, while the Giants are 3 games back at 73-71. The Mets magic number is 16 with 18 games remaining while the Giants magic number is 22 with 18 games remaining.

Again, if the Mets merely play .500 ball in their last 18 games (9-9), the Giants must win 13 of their last 18 to move past and claim the last wildcard spot.

If the Mets were to post a 12-6 record in their last 18 games, they would have 88 wins. The Giants would then need 16 wins in their last 18 games (.888 clip) to pass the Mets. The Giants still have 7 games left against the Dodgers.

We're going Fri and Sun. Should be good games. ESPN guesses Ohtani/Verlander on Fri and Kershaw vs Webb on Sun. The way the Dodgers have been playing I fully expect a Giants sweep.

The series with the Dodgers this weekend could be high drama. That rivalry often is dramatic. There's also a 4-game set in Los Angeles coming up September 18-21. If the Giants are still in the race for the wildcard, it's almost guaranteed to be dramatic. There will still be 6 games after that series concludes for the Giants 2025 regular season.

Too bad it isn't the last series. Otherwise I could imagine Devers hitting a HR to knock the Dodgers out of winning the West.

Tyler Glasnow dominates in win over the Rockies (Dodgers win 3-1)

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/103330/dodgers-rockies-recap-win-tyler-glasnow-mookie-betts

If you didn’t know anything about these two teams watching this game, you could swear you were witnessing a fiercely contested battle of heavyweights as the Dodgers outlasted the Rockies in a 3-1 win at home. Tyler Glasnow and Chase Dollander were both outstanding, and it ended up being the efforts of the red-hot Mookie Betts against the Rockies’ bullpen that decided the game, with a two-run go-ahead double in the bottom of the seventh.

Happy Birthday Esther Cleveland - second daughter to President Grover Cleveland and the youngest first lady in US history Francis Cleveland (21). Esther's elder sister was Ruth. In 1921, a manufacturer of candybars renamed one of their products "Baby Ruth" during a record breaking year of Babe Ruth's career. Babe Ruth sued the candy manufacterer 10 years later. The manufacturer argued the bar was named after Ruth Cleveland, even though Grover Cleveland left office 28 years prior and 17 years after Ruth died of diphtheria at age 17. The candymaker was run by Otto Schering, who also invented Peppermint Patty and Butterfinger.

Esther Cleveland lived to be 86 years old. She was the first child to be born to an incumbent US President and First Lady.

Interesting factoids. I had heard the Baby Ruth story some time long ago, but had forgotten it.

Peppermint Patty became the name of a character in a comic strip (Peanuts), and Butterfinger became an epithet for receivers who dropped passes and people who dropped valuable items, often shattering them.

Sorry. I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

1850 - California is admitted as the 31st state of the United States. California's admission to the United States was a feature of the Compromise of 1850, which was the passage and enactment of five bills that briefly defused abolitionist vs. slavery tensions in the United States. To wit -

1) California was admitted to the United States as a free state,

2) passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850,

3) banned the slave trade, but not slavery itself, in Washington, D.C.,

4) defined the northern and western boundaries of Texas while also establishing a territorial government for the Territory of New Mexico with no restrictions on any future state in that territory would be free or slave, and finally

5) establishing a territorial government for the Territory of Utah with no restrictions on any future state in that territory would be free or slave.

Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, had succeeded Zachary Taylor on July 9, 1850, upon Taylor's death. Fillmore was a key influence in the passage of the Compromise of 1850 legislation along with Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun. Calhoun died before passage, but he issued a warning that the South perceived the balance between North and South to be broken, which would be increasingly apparent in the years leading up to 1861 and the Civil War.

Today is the 175th anniversary of California's admission, or Admission Day.

Interestingly, though California was admitted as a free state, enslaved individuals still existed in California. The largest concentration of enslaved Black labor occurred at the Kentucky Ridge Mine.
