Welcome to the Daily Bear Dump, a Write for California community board where one can talk about anything – Cal-related or off-topic. Comment threads are sorted by topic. Anything is fine, so long as you’re generally civil.
His Central Park concert from the early 90s was recommended to me recently and it was so cool seeing him play it live with all the African instruments accompaning the songs from that album.
What's weird is that when I did this before, maybe 5+ years ago, most of the first page was a doctor in Philly. So Google must have changed their algorithm.
i happen to have a very common name from the part of India our family is from. currently, the first hit on Google that is not me looks to be some journalist. it is usually some research person in engineering or CS.
The World Turned Upside Down is a collection of articles by renowned journalist and author XXX. Providing in-depth analysis of the historical context for current conditions in India, this text also documents the people’s resistance to brutal repression and a divergent path for the development of their villages, regions and nation, and, ultimately, for themselves and the world. From imperialism, Indian expansionism and ecological crisis, to struggles for land and political prisoners, XXX provides in both passionate and dispassionate detail the people’s mighty determination to turn this world ravaged by capitalist exploitation upside down.
Over the weekend, there was somebody created a malicious rumor that that Haitian immigrants were eating pets like dogs and cats in Springfield OH, probably in an attempt to gain back some of the pet-lovers that Vance lost with his "cat lady" insult. JD Vance amplified this dog whistle on Monday and then the Trump himself jumped all over it, amplifying it - reiterating it and publishing media of him saving kittens. So racist and weird
The debate was so lopsided, that it made me wonder how we had slid so precipitously as a country that a major party could nominate a bat shit crazy dude to be POTUS. And that doesn't even touch the disqualifying factor that this same bat shit crazy dude attempted a coup because he couldn't handle, and still can't handle, that he lost an election fair and square. He will try it again in November and will have people to help him try it.
America has been convulsing for the last 9 years. A large portion of this country's electorate are clearly scared shitless about change and can't handle it.
I agree! I don’t think it’s a both sides thing at all. He was spouting a bizarre series of weirdo internet conspiracies totally unprompted in response to serious policy questions. According to T, immigrants are stealing people’s pets to eat them, democrats are sneaking illegal aliens into the US in order to give them free sex change operations in prison, the Mayor of Moscow’s wife is bribing Joe Biden, and so on.
T used to sound bold and brash. He now seems cringe and embarrassing. He is clearly a crazy old grandpa who has gotten lost in the online alt right universe.
She beat his ass soundly, but really it was largely his own doing.
Now, does any of this matter in the actual election? I have no idea but my guess is not that much
my guess is that the other 50% thinks the same about woke liberals, out of control XYZ (whatever it is).
what we really need is some sort of a transition plan to help the people w/ the change because the alternate is something like Trump. as much as i am for progressive ideals, it might be that we get there better and faster if we actually go slower .. maybe?
If by slower you mean nominating and electing candidates with more centrist views, I agree.
I have often agreed with the folks who are characterized as the "woke" liberals. And at my core, I see the harms that have been visited upon folks who aren't White males and understand the need to correct for those harms.
But over the 40+ years I've been a voting age adult I have learned that you can lose your audience if you get too far ahead of yourself, thereby unintentionally and needlessly creating enemies.
We need to get agreement on fundamental issues through reasonable policy positions that advance towards policy goals and bring others along. Further, there must be an effort at all levels (local, state, federal) to engage persuadable critics on fundamental issues such as voting rights, bodily autonomy, climate change, tax policy, and fiscal policy. These are fundamental issues of governance where progress can be made in steps that will create strides without setting up all-or-nothing scenarios.
Progressives are given to all-or-nothing scenarios and it's hurting or even killing widespread support. Move the damn ball down the field. Get the first down so you can ultimately reach the goal and score.
Not intending to give a comprehensive list, here are a few ideas of what constitutes centrist ideas and viewpoints:
Voting Rights -
Mail-in ballots - every registered voter gets a mail-in ballot automatically.
Voter registration - motor voter is the preferred method of registration. This dovetails with change of address through local DMV offices so that most out of date voter registrations are culled. With Real ID as the federally mandated basis for IDs, it should also automatically serve as a barrier to non-citizens registering to vote.
Bodily autonomy - choices in medical care are between the patient and the patient's doctor. The state or federal government has zero interest in medical choices made by the patient. READ: if you have a uterus, the government has no interest in the medical care of that uterus or the body that houses it. Women hold full citizenship. Full stop.
Climate change - this is more broadly about environmental justice as climate change is inextricably intertwined with environmental issues. Since being pro-life is a litmus test for many on the right, centrists accept this standard in preserving the health and life of all people through environmental policies that prioritize and promote clean air, clean water, and cracking down on polluters.
Enforcement of health and safety standards in the production of food - the listeria outbreak at Boar's Head foods should be poster child for this. Need I say more?
Tax policy - Taxes are the price each of us pay for a civilized society and a government that serves the governed. The costs of enforcement must be borne by everyone as everyone benefits, most of all the wealthy. Also, the Buffet Rule applies. People with vast means (READ: they don't need to work because of their wealth) should pay at least the same rate on their income as people who *must* work to pay the bills, raise their children, and keep a roof over their heads.
Taxes pay for public goods that benefit everyone - roads, public education, public infrastructure (like public utilities, water systems, sewers), libraries, parks, and many other things.
Social Security taxes - eliminate the cap on taxable income for Social Security. This will help the health of the system immensely and probably stave off fiscal exhaustion for decades.
Fiscal policy - invest in public infrastructure at the federal level, particularly in transportation (roads, bridges, mass transit), public education (rebuild crumbling schools to meet safety standards for students in all communities), and healthcare (hospitals and clinics).
All of these policies are centered around the idea that a free society with a representative government is best served and strengthened by a people who have the tools to build out the rest of it. An educated workforce is a smart workforce able to innovate and make advancements. A healthy workforce is ready to work and be productive. A happy workforce is ready to come to work everyday and make positive contributions to their employer and community.
Those are centrist viewpoints. If folks want to characterize them as "liberal", then that tells me they do not have any ideas themselves of what centrism is and what is necessary towards building a free and strong society. It seems that some folks prioritize hoarding as much cash as possible to the exclusion of benefits to the folks who make that wealth possible.
We need to lift each other up, not beat some others down.
was stuck driving in the car w/. family during the debate so i heard the first 30 min or so. i liked the part about eating cats. you would think you could be smart enough not to talk about that sort of stuff in a nationally televised debate.
...and yet the election remains too close to call and will probably remain so.
Within memory, the batshit crazy stuff we heard out of the mouth of the Republican nominee would have been enough to get laughed off the stage if not cause existential dread in his party elders. Now, we actually worry he will be elected.
That was my concern, did anything that happened actually change many minds on either side? Most minds are made up one way or the other. Only a small percentage of the voters in a few places are actually "in play" as far as making a meaningful shift.
If on of the candidates positioned to get ~80% in a given precinct or district gets only ~75% or moves up to ~85% isn't a game changer.
It's a tough nut to crack either way, though down ballot it could actually have more meaningful consequences, assuming those voters go that far down the ballot, so I view the whole process looking for someone to say something to someone whose' going vote for the opponent that will actually sway them.
There are no true undecided voters. There are those who refuse to think about it and may or may not vote. Everyone else who is going to vote has decided.
agreed. the fact that he actually has a good shot of winning is very telling about the what people care about in terms of day-to-day stuff.
my one thought today is that Trump is sort of like "local news at 630p on channel 7." bringing up all the latest dumb stuff that you should care about and worry about. and now w/ the internet you can worry about something that might have happened in Springfield OH about cats.
I shouldn't be shocked by anything out of Trump anymore, but I was still shocked he actually talked about that. Truly insane.
And it was totally unprompted! There was a question about the immigration bill and he just went into talking about rally crowds and then people eating dogs & cats.
That there are so many people that don't mind that (and other obviously troublesome behavior) because they think he is still their best bet to get more of what they care about, and don't see the problems as their problems is at the center of the problem.
it seemed that that ONE thing that Trump really wanted to complain about was immigration. that is not a terrible strategy, but the dog and cat thing was absurd
Winners again. The Athletics broke up their small two-game losing streak with a victory over the Astros, beating their division rival by a final of 4-3 in extra innings in the kickoff to the road trip.
Sears with the spot start? No matter
Yesterday the scheduled starter for game one of this series was Osvaldo Bido. We now know that he’s been dealing with some wrist tendonitis and ultimately required a trip to the IL. The club elected to just move up the rotation a day instead of plugging in a new arm. That means the original middle game starter JP Sears was on the mound for tonight’s contest against the playoff-bound Astros.
I’m sorry to be such a partisan hack on debate night of all nights, but Matt Chapman is incredibly good at baseball. Is that a controversial position? You better believe it! He plays on a losing team! Still, he was one of the few bright spots in the Giants’ latest loss: 3-2 against the playoff-bound Milwaukee Brewers. I’m left to sit with the surprise I’m feeling thanks to Chapman’s consistent greatness.
The Dodgers defense collapsed in a five-run eighth inning, turning a two-run lead into a 6-3 loss to the Cubs on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
Looking in control for much of this one, as Yoshinobu Yamamoto looked good in his return, and the Dodgers bullpen held serve through seven innings. But the eighth was a disaster.
Dude - those catches by PCA!!! Amazing, including the game winner in the 9th. The guy is electric out there, best fielder I have seen in a Cubs uniform ever, and that includes many years of watching Ryno. His bat is coming around now, too.
Even if he didn't touch that, I think the Dodgers fan was leaning over and he definitely touched the ball. Since it was close, I wonder if a HR would've been overturned for fan interference.
Waiting list: FSU Semi-no's, Snore Eagle, Big (Black and) Blue Nation, Minute Rice, UCan't, Not The Jacksonville You Think It Is State, FA(not)I U, Charlotte 0-and-2ers, Sam Houston we have a problem, Actual Houston we have a problem, flopping.
Auburn senior quarterback Payton Thorne on Tuesday said criticism after losses, such as Saturday's defeat to California, has included requests for money from bettors.
Thorne, appearing on "The Next Round," said bettors have messaged him on Venmo, asking for money.
"They're definitely not sending cash," Thorne, who had four passes intercepted in the 21-14 loss to Cal on Saturday, said with a chuckle. "It's funny. When they lose money, they want their money back. But when they win money on a parlay, no one's ever sent me any of the money."
Thorne made light of the requests for money during his appearance, but the issue is something that the NCAA is monitoring and trying to combat.

MORAGA – California volleyball posted a slew of career performances and three double-doubles against Saint Mary's on Tuesday night, overcoming the Gaels (0-4), 3-2, in five sets (25-13, 23-25, 25-22, 26-28, 15-10) at University Credit Union Pavilion. The Golden Bears are now 5-2 on the year.
The California men's tennis team opens the 2024-25 season in the Battle in the Bay Classic starting Thursday and ending Sunday, with the Golden Bears co-hosting the annual event with the California Tennis Club at the venerable club in San Francisco.
Cal's Carl Emil Overbeck, Alex Chang, Derrick Chen, Timofey Stepanov and Theo Dean – a graduate transfer from Yale – will compete in the singles field of 32. The Golden Bears' pairs of Overbeck and Dean, Chang and Mikey Wright, and Chen and Stepanov will play in the 16-team doubles field. Overbeck, a senior, paired with former Cal teammate Yuta Kikuchi to win doubles titles at the Battle in the Bay Classic in 2021 and 2022.
The California men's soccer team (2-3-0) is back home to host ACC foe SMU on Friday and fellow Bay Area program Dominican University in a nonconference match on Monday at Edwards Stadium.
Friday's match will be the Golden Bears' second conference clash of the season, after Cal's 2-1 setback in a tight battle in its inaugural ACC game at North Carolina State last Friday.
BERKELEY- The California women's soccer team closes its nonconference schedule this Thursday when the Golden Bears play host to Saint Marys' at 4 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium.
Cal, winner of five straight, rides a six-match unbeaten streak into the week and boasts a 6-1-1 overall record. The Gaels make the short trip to Berkeley with a 2-3-1 record and are coming off a narrow 1-0 loss to No. 1 Stanford last Thursday.
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Sophomore Constance Fouillet posted the second-best round of her career Tuesday at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, carding a 5-under-par 67 to lead Cal into fifth place in the team standings heading into the final round.
Fouillet (75-67 | 142, -2) finished just one stroke shy of the program's 18-hole record, an all-time mark she tied last September as a freshman. The Golden Bears shot 3-over 291 as a team for the second straight round.
The California men's swimming & diving team begins its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference at the annual King of the Pool at Cal Poly on Sept. 20.
The Golden Bears, who finished No. 2 nationally last season and have either won the NCAA championship or were the runners-up in each of the past 14 seasons, will compete in dual meets against familiar opponents before taking part in the ACC Championships in February.
Cal joins the ACC and then proceed to have zero meets against ACC opponents except Stanfurd before the ACC championship. The Minnesota Invitational has Texas, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Cal, and Harvard.
The California football team returns home Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. PT kickoff against San Diego State at California Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears and Aztecs will meet for the ninth time in history.
Senior forward Karlie Lema of the California women's soccer team took home national and conference honors after a career week on the pitch. Lema was named Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Week and ACC Offensive Player of the Week, the organizations announced Tuesday.
The Morgan Hill native has been a driving force in the Golden Bears' early season success as the nation's leading goal (11) and point scorer (24). Lema took her game to a different level this past week scoring five goals and tallying an assist in Cal's convincing wins over Nevada and San Diego. Of the seven Cal goals this week, she had her hand in all but one, which was a Nevada own goal.
The 2024 Pac-12 champion California women's swimming & diving team begins its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference at the annual Queen of the Pool at Cal Poly on Sept. 20.
The Golden Bears, who soundly won the conference meet in their final season in the Pac-12, will compete against non-ACC opponents during the regular season before participating in the ACC Championships in February.
Wesley Walker holds the single game receiving yardage record for Cal having amassed 289 yards receiving on October 2, 1976 against San Jose State. Amazingly Walker managed the record with only eight receptions. Geoff MacArthur is second to Walker with 245 yards in the ’03 Big Game, but he required twice as many catches for his total.

According to Google, what is something your name doppelganger has done?
First couple are me. the images are a bunch of rando's. then an attorney's state bar record.
She used to be a renowned oceanographer, but now Google just gives me me, and a bunch of random office workers. One cinematographer.
The word "cinematographer" reminds me of the Paul Simon song, "I Know What I Know". The word appears more than once in that song.
His Central Park concert from the early 90s was recommended to me recently and it was so cool seeing him play it live with all the African instruments accompaning the songs from that album.
That must have been a great event.
Sorry...I meant on youtube. I wasn't there but would've been great to be there.
That's how I would see it!
I see a lot of references to rapper Scootie Wop.
CEO and chairman of one of North America's fastest-growing networks of dental practices.
More than one doppelganer. Changed skin color, changed gender, committed crimes, got convicted and imprisoned, died.
Crap musician in PA
Pitcher at a rando college I have never heard of in SC
Crap rapper at Clark Univ. in Atlanta
Director of some small movies
Bunch of random Germans
Local Doctor

People who want to help the poor more, but only a little bit more, and certainly not so much as to raise taxes 😀
Not intending to give a comprehensive list, here are a few ideas of what constitutes centrist ideas and viewpoints:
Voting Rights -

Auburn's Payton Thorne says bettors asking for money after losses
https://www.espn.com/sports-betting/story/_/id/41209187/auburn-payton-thorne-says-bettors-asking-money-losses

It's time again for Oski Disciple's Bear Facts.
Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season.
Wesley Walker's feat is even more astounding when you realize he was blind in one eye.
To say I was in awe and remain in awe of his athletic accomplishments in spite of his challenges is an understatement.
he played for the Jets, right? he was fun to watch back in the day.
Walker was a 2nd round pick in the 1977 NFL Draft, going 33rd overall to the NY Jets. His NFL career was entirely with the Jets, from 1977 to 1989.
I think in the early 80s.
those high scoring AFC East games were generally fun, back in the day.
