cycling.

fearsome day at La Vuelta as the stage ends on the steepest climb in professional cycling, the Angliru, which consistent pitches of 20-24%.

American Sepp Kuss, is still in the lead, but 2nd and 3rd place are possible better riders than him on his own team (Jumbo Visma). those 2 are already grand tour winners and it is not clear they "will let Kuss" win just because he is in the lead.

Expand full comment

I've only been able to watch on CNBC on the weekend because I don't pay for Peacock. Was wondering if they would let Kuss win since he's hung in in the lead for so long.

Expand full comment

he is only in the lead by 8 sec or so now. they clearly could let him win but it doesnt appear they are going to make it easy for him.

I didn't know the lead was down to only eight seconds.

Vingegaard has attacked the last 2 days and made up nearly all of his 2-3 min defecit that he had.

i also think that no one expected him to defend the red jersey so well during the time trial and he because an "interesting" and "unwanted" competitor

but today might have been their last chance to really jump ahead.

there is another legit mountain stage tomorrow, but slightly easier profile.

some interesting news conference stuff

Vinegaard finished second, and moved to eight seconds to Kuss.

The pair both kept riding after Kuss was gapped, but Vingegaard told reporters at the line that he hopes Kuss will win.

“The win today was our main goal and to keep the situation 1-2-3 on GC, so everything went how we wanted, we can be happy,” Vingegaard said. “For me, I am happy that Sepp is still in the jersey. To be honest, I hoped he would keep the jersey. I would love to see Sepp win this Vuelta a España.”

Mitt Romney says he will not seek a second term in the Senate

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/13/mitt-romney-senate-reelection/

Sen. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012 and the only member of his party to twice vote to convict former president Donald Trump in politically charged impeachment trials, announced Wednesday that he will not seek a second term in the Senate representing Utah, saying in an interview that it is time for a new generation to “step up” and “shape the world they’re going to live in.”

Romney, 76, said his decision not to run again was heavily influenced by his belief that a second term, which would take him into his 80s, probably would be less productive and less satisfying than the current term has been. He blamed that both on the disarray he sees among House Republicans and on his own lack of confidence in the leadership of President Biden and Trump.

“It’s very difficult for the House to operate, from what I can tell,” he said in a lengthy telephone interview previewing his formal announcement, “and two, and perhaps more importantly, we’re probably going to have either Trump or Biden as our next president. And Biden is unable to lead on important matters and Trump is unwilling to lead on important matters.”

I saw this news on Reddit several days ago and then it disappeared, so I couldn't put it on the DBD. I Google it and it was nowhere to be found. The news has re-emerged. Apparently, Alina Habba had 15 days to file paperwork for the Manhattan case to request a jury trial. If you're guilty, you always want a jury because it is far easier to convince one rando to hang the jury rather than convince a judge. Presumably because of her lack of experience as a trial lawyer, she didn't do it. So Trump has a bench trial coming up on Oct 2.

Rep Boebert was in the audience at a Beetlejuice Musical, where she was warned by ushers because she vaped, sang, and took video recordings. She refused to comply, so cops were called and she got tossed. Naturally, she pulled the "do you know who I am" and "I'm calling the mayor" card.

On this day in Memorial Stadium history…..there has never been a Cal home football game. It is the only date in the months of September, October and November in which the Bears have not hosted an opponent at CMS although they did play the Barbarians to a scoreless tie on at old California Field on September 13, 1913. The Bears have only played four times on this date since then, all on the road and all losses.

DBD celebrates 100 years of football in Strawberry Canyon with this daily feature appearing throughout the football season.

Auburn’s D is definitely solid, tho I have a feeling they’ll really struggle to win games in the SEC this year because they can’t throw the football.

Unfortunately for Cal though, Oregon, UW, Utah, Oregon State, UCLA, Wazzu and even USC are all pretty solid defensively. More Wilcox rock fights await, and we all know how those turn out…2-11 in his last 13 one-score games.

As self-appointed commissioner of the NCAA I hereby decree realignment according to the map in the link below. All power 5 schools shall realign into two conferences, each with three divisions of 12 schools each. Football postseason shall involve the six division leaders plus some wildcards. The B1G championship shall take place in the Rose Bowl regardless of which division the participants play in. The SEC Championship should rotate among the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl and whatever else. The national championship should rotate among NFL stadiums with domes or warm weather. I probably have some campuses wrong.
