How would Cal fare in a league of the plus-plus-academic/minus-football league that included Vandy, Northwestern, Duke, Virginia, Rice, Stanford, and Georgetown?
Shout out to all the people who put a sign that says, "free" next to the junk they leave on the curb. Absent such signage I'm always looking around for who to pay.
Pringles: Originally as a reference to Charles "Lol" Pringle, Cal Golden bear from the 1898 Football team, it has become a verb and substitute for LOL. One can pringle in response to a joke, state simple ‘pringles’ or ‘pqtm’ – shorthand for pringled quietly to myself. Many have found this seems to fit the experience of one’s response when reading humorous comments better than LOL.
So fun story, went to the ER last night. I dropped a spoon, and when I tried to catch it, i cut my palm on a food processor blade in the dishwasher. No stitches, just glue. They wrapped it in gauze and an ACE bandage, so now it looks Very Serious.
About ten years ago I was rinsing a tomato can to recycle it and sliced the living hell out of my finger. Had to go to ER to get three stitches. I received like five medical bills for that ER visit over a period of like 18 months. My wife does not let me near cans anymore 😀
I had an unstoppable bloody nose in 2020 that cost me nearly $10K for the ER visit, and bills that kept arriving for a full year. Woooooo Tahoe Forest Hospital!
It's a vascular restrictor, so she's right, they did try that. And they tried packing the nose. Eventually they stuck a balloon up there and inflated it, and I had to leave it in for three days. Then they removed it and had to cauterize my nostril because it had sort of healed into the skin, and it was a general shitshow.
About 7 years ago I bought one of those european can openers. They cut the can open along the fat lip so that there aren't any sharp edges. Really cool.
Kitchen can be a dangerous place. About three weeks ago I was hand washing some dishes and a plate slipped out of my hand. I tried to pin it against the cabinet below the sink with my knee but it fell all the way down and landed at the base of my big toe. Half of the area below the nail is still purple and it still takes a couple blocks for the toe to feel OK when I start my run.
Yeah, I was making my amazing pizza - cut my finger instead of the red onion - had to get to Kaiser to get a few stitches - BUT - I like the doctor, he gave me an awesome historical book from one of the Spanish to invade the area that is part of what is now "Mexico".
Correction: Georgetown is FCS so it means we consistently...blow them out... by 7-10 points. (credit to another WFC user, I think Oso, but I can't recall).
Yesterday so, so good, meatball Mexican style soup with tomato sauce with small potatoes and carrots with grated cotija - so tasty & filling (that my wife made).
Episode 1 of the new Quantum Leap was kind of a letdown. I do like the new lead, but the writing in the first episode was just bad, way too much explanations. It's also alarming that this show is trying to tie in with the old show, but Scott Bakula already said that he won't be participating (unless that's a fake out). Oh Boy.
Not sure how much live viewing still matters, but somehow this show has the 10 PM Monday night slot. It feels like that they are going for family friendly over gritty, so not sure why it's on so late.
Following the trip to South Bend, I got caught up on Bad Sisters, which is fantastic, and House of the Dragon, which I find to be solid but nothing more.
Episode 2 of American Gigolo on Showtime is up next, and then I plan to start Industry, based on recommendations.
US Government wins in Appeals to temporarily restrain Judge Cannons' ruling, not that the Special Master was entertaining BS. FBI temporarily regains access to the seized Mar a Lago documents. This is a bad day for Orange Julius Ceaser
Trump goes in Hannity to complain about the ruling. He claims that he can declassify documents just by proclaiming it hereby declassified or just thinking about it. Keep talking, dipshit - your lawyers are going to resign rather than defend demonstrable lies.
Case also referred to Manhattan DA for criminal charges. NY lacks the ability to throw him in jail - only fine him and ban him from doing business in NY, so it's up to the Manhattan and Federal AGs.
The 200 page filing is full of damning accusations - but it focuses on overstated asset value and revenue. She referred it also to the DOJ for Federal Charges
The worry, as it always has been, is that Putin decides to pull out the unthinkable weapons to achieve his goals. He wants the West to believe that this is a distinct possibility or that he will do it if he's going to be denied a victory in Ukraine by conventional means.
Isn’t the worry also that if he annexes those regions and makes them part of Russia he will view any NATO weapons used by Ukraine to attack those regions as an attack on Russia and an escalation.
If he really thinks this is the way to do it, does he all of a sudden fall down some stairs or trip and all out a window? Assuming most of his generals are against it that is.
We were watching each of his ABs on my phone while at the Phillies game. We were driving back during his last AB and didn't quite walk into his apt. His last pitch was right as we walked in the entry door and No 1 turned away and took a few steps up the hallway to open his door and BOOM. He missed it and was mad. Then we watched the Pirates reliever meltdown and Stanton hit a walkoff Grand Slam.
If you’ve read my articles — particularly my recaps — over the last month or three, then you’ve probably gotten used to a healthy dose of pessimism. Hell, if you’ve watched the San Francisco Giants at all over the last month or three, then you’ve probably gotten used to a healthy dose of pessimism. It comes with the territory when a team wins 30 fewer games than the prior season.
So occasionally I need to be reminded that baseball is still fun, and that the Giants, while wrapping up an exceedingly disappointing campaign, can still do cool things.
Tuesday was cool and fun, and not just because their 2023 starting right fielder hit his 60th home run of the season.
I think the Giants have like a 3 year rebuild ahead of them. They should shoot for a timeline that has them ascending right when Father Time starts to catch up on Mookie, Freddie Freeman, & Co.
SF is a very well run organization, they will be fine.
It really does take just one big ticket player to anchor that lineup, provided Kapler doesn’t turn him into a platoon player based on lefty-righty matchups.
Unfortunately signing Judge is likely a pipe dream unless he really does want to leave the Bronx.
Well, they’re not in a partial rebuilding, especially if they sign Judge, tho again I don’t see him leaving NY. If the past is any indicator, this regime will strike out on the big ticket items like Judge/Trea Turner, so they’ll save $ and cobble together a list of lower-tier free agent adds that peaked 5 years ago like Jean Segura, Michael Brantley & Mitch Haniger…
I dunno, Belt may be done. Crawford has one more year. Joc is a FA. Bart will be their starting catcher. Flores will start at 2nd. How many of the remaining non-pitchers do you have confidence in other than Longoria, Estrada.
Maybe partial rebuilding isn't the right phrase but they definitely need more than just one or two big splash free agents to compete in the NL West.
The Dodgers dropped the nightcap 5-2 to split a doubleheader against the Diamondbacks. Tyler Anderson took his fourth loss of the year, and the left-hander deserved better luck on Tuesday, pitching in front of what ultimately turned out to be a season-high four errors for the Dodgers defense.
They say winning fixes everything. Certainly for a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers of 2022, with 103 wins and 45 losses, it is rather challenging to be truly critical on many aspects, even if for a shorter sample size, like a doubleheader for instance.
Regardless, baseball’s regular season is a long one, and over the course of it, you’ll find specific periods to criticize certain aspects, and that goes for the top teams, all the way down to the bottom.
LOS ANGELES — Even when the Dodgers were sloppy and bad, and at times didn’t seem to know where the ball was going, they still managed to win, seemingly the only option for this team that collects victories in bulk. A furious five-run rally in the eighth inning sealed the deal for victory No. 103, 6-5 over the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers made two errors, had a few other defensive lapses, and even sacrifice bunted down four runs in the eighth inning. These things happen over the course of a season, which is why it’s so rare for a team to win as many games as the Dodgers have.
“We’re not going to give up and quit on games,” said catcher Austin Barnes, who homered during the eighth-inning rally. “It’s easy when he have kind of a big lead like this to take it easy, but it’s a good sign that we keep going.”
I'm guessing that the consensus among Cal fans about Saturday's game is that if the Bears win a 6-6 record is within reach and maybe 7-5 but a loss will portend a losing season. That's certainly the way I'm feeling about it. Huge game.
Yes, this is accurate. If we lose to Arizona at home, I don’t see how we beat WSU on the road.
If we go 1–2 during the next 3 games (Arizona, @ WSU, @ Colorado) that would drop our record to 3-3 and the back half of the schedule is loaded with tough games and where going 3-3 would be very difficult.
Agree, if we lose that would foretell a disaster. But I dunno, I think we will handily. And by handily I mean we will go up by two scores midway through the third and then call nothing but fullback dives for the remainder of the game, just barely hanging on when a last second field goal by AZ to win the game bounces off the uprights. A Wilcox Blowout!
Wouldn't you have said the same thing about Arizona in 2002? That was the Jon Mackovic-led Arizona team that was supposed to be bad and they beat Cal, in Berkeley, and scored bunches of points doing it.
Arizona has this nasty habit of playing Cal close. There's almost no such thing as an easy Cal win against Arizona.
In baseball I think we get smoked by Vandy, Virginia, Furd. Don't think Dook has that good a baseball program and know nothing at all about NW (if they even have a team), Georgetown, and Rice.
Just did this free personality assessment for a seminar through the Ohio State Alumni Association, in case any of you are interested: https://discpersonalitytesting.com/free-disc-test/
On Myers Briggs I got intj
Sadly the type has been coopted for weird bro-y alt right memes, e.g., https://www.countere.com/home/book-of-the-intj-lifter
in the seminar, they keep referring to "the D" or "if you work with a D, you know who your D is" hahaha
Which is fitting, because in my experience Ds usually are total Ds!

SBFC, Smart Bad Football Conference
Is there a link to the teams that would be in the SBFC?
maybe one of the writers can create a wiki page.
I’d go for this. Decent road trips and less worrying about whether the weight room is god-given or not.
I don't know, perhaps a winning schedule most years. Without marquee opponents my guess is that recruiting would be thin.
Almost as thin as the ratings. And the caliber of football.
I don’t know, Ivy League football has its own charms
Vandy is 3-1 and has a QB that is fast this year. Nevertheless, based on how they've been the last few years, I think we beat them 75% of the time.
I think we can handle Dook and Virginia at least 60% of the time.
Georgetown is FCS so it means we consistently beat them by 7-10 points.
Correction: Georgetown is FCS so it means we consistently...blow them out... by 7-10 points. (credit to another WFC user, I think Oso, but I can't recall).
Might have been me with the blowout line. I’ve used it a few times now to say we are going to blowout Colorado 24-10.

oh that sounds great.
General Tso's chicken, no rice because of keto focus.
So battered, fried and in a sticky sweet sauce is OK, but the rice is a bridge too far?
Well yeah. Gotta cut stuff out where you can ! 🙃

The chicken wings were awesome. Going to have to make it again, possibly with other sauces.

Putin escalates as he mobilizes 300k more troops, sets table to annex Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
So mobilizing troops is one thing, but don't they have a major problem with equipment and munitions? That problem can't be solved quickly.
They have to buy them from North Korea. Putin wrote a beautiful letter to Kim jong un
Yeah, this doesn't seem like the best plan.

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/9/20/23363935/dodgers-rally-sloppy-errors-won-anyway-diamondbacks-hitting-game-1-doubleheader
