The primary cut is the Shoulder. The shoulder is cut into halves just above the front leg joint - the top is the Boston Butt, Picnic is the lower - from just above the pig's "shoulder bone" to the just above the "knee". This cut always has bones in it, so it's more difficult to fabricate pieces before or carve afterward. One should go either low/slow to take advantage of the bone to flavor/keep moist. Your standard ham is usually made with the bag leg/rump area, but sometimes made with the Picnic cut. So, when you see "Picnic Ham" in the store, it's not necessarily ham to eat at a picnic, but made with pork from this area.
I've looked into this and the origins are murky. But as far as I can tell, yeah. But it's used as a pejorative in the pork industry - a lesser cut that you wouldn't serve at a formal dinner - but an inferior cut that you wouldn't mind making for a casual occasion like a picnic.
Butt is the superior cut. The muscle does less work (more tender, not as lean/dry, less gamey), has more intramuscular tissues that allow it to gelatinize/fall apart, and is a more symmetrical to allow a more predictable cook.

By East Bay Area do you mean between the Bay and the Berkeley-Oakland hills? Or do you mean a wider area that might go as far east as Mt. Diablo? I ask because east of the Berkeley-Oakland hills is a much warmer climate in September and October. Marine influence lessens rapidly east of the hills.
Here in Oakland (on the northern edge of Chinatown), the expected high for the day is around 74 deg. F and the current temp is 59 deg. F.
To amplify on Rocksanddirt's observation, the warmest months in the SF Bay Area are typically September and October.
This summer has been weird in that temps have *rarely* gone above 80 deg. F. We may have had a few days where the temps have been close to 90, but that hasn't been the case in September thus far. September has been mild.
Mrs Slug observed that there was no "Fogust" this year. August was mostly clear and mild. Fog returned, however, earlier this month. And there have been a number of mornings with low clouds.
Cal was on quarters when I was there. We didn’t start until late Sept/early Oct and it was usually nice and warm and hard to go to class. Maybe not 100 warm though.
Having lived a huge chunk of my life in Berkeley, the period you describe would have been warm, indeed. But it was not unheard of that the temps could top 90 or even 100 for a few days before settling back down.

I like to stay informed about current events. I try to read all sorts of news headlines, but recently I have been avoiding the election headlines. They build up so much anxiety inside of me. I would rather stay away from political news because it affects my mood drastically. With the severity of the election, I cannot imagine another four years of the Trump Administration. I know that if I continue to stay informed, I will stress myself out to the point where I can't think about anything else. I would rather hear about political news from someone I trust, rather than biased news sources.

Okay, I looked at Wikipedia - the 3rd sellout was against St. Mary's on October 4 (78,000). Cal also drew well on the road - October 11 at Wisconsin (45,000), November 1 at UCLA (80,266), and November 22 at Stanfraud (82,000). That's an average of 69,089 per game on the road.
In days of yore going to a Bear game was the thing to do. They were drawing big crowds with considerably fewer alums than today and with a much smaller population in the Bay Area. I remember as a kid local merchants had contests during Big Game Week to see who could best decorate their business in blue and gold. I believe there also used to be a parade for the football team (or that included them prominently) before the season started.

In 1947 Pappy Waldorf took over as California’s head football coach replacing Frank Wickhorst whose Bears had gone 2-7 in his lone season at the helm. Pappy effected a remarkable turnaround as his team posted a 9-1 record with the only loss to national power U$C. The Bears played before 606,266 fans over the course of the season including three sellouts at Memorial Stadium and an average of 56,857 in seven home games. The Bears were led by All-American running back Jackie Jensen whose heroics included throwing a 67-yard touchdown option pass to Paul Keckly late in fourth quarter of that years’s Big Game to give Cal a 21-18 victory.

The sellouts were Navy, U$C, and one other game I'm not recalling; the Big Game would have been in Shallow Alto that year.
The sellouts almost certainly included the East Side temporary seat extensions above the East Rim. As I recall, sellout capacity was approx. 81,500 seats.
Okay, I looked at Wikipedia - the 3rd sellout was against St. Mary's on October 4 (78,000). Cal also drew well on the road - October 11 at Wisconsin (45,000), November 1 at UCLA (80,266), and November 22 at Stanfraud (82,000). That's an average of 69,089 per game on the road.

In days of yore going to a Bear game was the thing to do. They were drawing big crowds with considerably fewer alums than today and with a much smaller population in the Bay Area. I remember as a kid local merchants had contests during Big Game Week to see who could best decorate their business in blue and gold. I believe there also used to be a parade for the football team (or that included them prominently) before the season started.
Bears weren't competing with the 49ers in those days.

This seems close enough--last month I joined the Berkeley Alumni Virtual Book Club. We had online discussion of Kuang's Babel.
The virtual book club experience wasn't very satisfying. I guess it's a little more engaging that DBD/s AV club, but not by that much, and I had higher expectations, so was more disappointed.
I do recommend the book, however.
