“Hope is a horrible thing…I don’t know who decided to package hope as a virtue because it’s not. It’s a plague. Hope is like walking around with a fishhook in your mouth and somebody just keeps pulling it and pulling it.” From State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.
Read this yesterday and it resonated with me as Cal football had once again given me hope after Saturday's victory.
I enjoy old ska and rocksteady, it's always interesting to stumble across early releases from people who later became much more popular as reggae artists (e.g. Shame and Scandal by Peter Tosh.) Not surprisingly I enjoy second wave because that's when I was really starting to develop my own taste in music, some of the third wave is great and some is absolute trash. Certainly a genre to get into if you like improbable covers ;)
Had a solid ska era in my youth, pink hair, tube socks, bowling shirts, skanking, the whole nine. Still enjoy the occasional show when my old favorites come through town, always a good time.
Crazy to think that a tiny "third-world" island could have such far reaching, and long-lasting influence on music. This includes the various forms of music that came out of Jamaica after ska, such as rock steady, reggae, dancehall, etc. The whole history of Jamaican music is pretty fascinating.
Brett Favre sought welfare monies to fund an athletic facility for his kid. This is not a repeat; it's a different facility. I don't know why this isn't bigger news.
I don't know, I'm seeing a lot of news about this. Seems like the story is being reported on quite a bit.
Anyway, I like that this story is confirming all my negative feelings about Favre (that probably mostly happened because of him constantly beating my favorite team back in the 90s).
It's more than 2/3 the way down the front page on HuffPo. well after articles about Tom Hanks, and Keith Olberman's dating recollections of Kyrstin Senema.
Judge did not hit #61. The one AB I saw he was pitched to and got all sliders. The 3 he swung at were all in the zone. Apparently in his last AB he was intentionally walked, which was apropos per the situation.
Thanks to HeyStudentBears for a shipment of Cal t-shirts for girls. They have pretty low mileage!
Got them yesterday. My (tomorrow) 7-yo loves them! She decided to wear one today for her school photo...we've got her drinking the koolaid (thru Oski's eyehole)!
They'll be available in a few years for others with young daughters...we'll take good care of them ;-)
Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by Blockbuster Video.
In his first seven seasons as Cal's head football coach (1935-1941) Stub Allison had a combined record of 15-6 against the Bears’ three rivals. 5-2 vs. Furd, 5-2 vs. U$C and — you guessed it — 5-2 vs. UC, Los Angeles.
Cal trivia fun fact appears on DBD every Tuesday and Thursday during the football season.
In two of those years (1937 and 1941), Cal beat all three rivals. The 1937 team was the Thunder Team and the last football team to earn a (co-)national championship. The 1937 team was 10-0-1 (tied Washington, 0-0) and outscored the three rivals 60-20.
The 1941 team was 4-5 overall, but beat all three rivals by a combined 57-7 score.
The '41 team was the only Cal football team to beat all three and not go to the Rose Bowl. Their only other win was vs. St Mary's on this day 81 years ago. That day also marked the debut of my lord and master, Oski. Happy Oski's birthday everyone!

Infinitely cruel.
Weather
Pullman on Saturday. Clear and 73 degrees, low of 47. Wind 8 mph. Should not influence the game.
Buckle up for an 'After Dark Special' then with either 150 total points, or snow, or both.
Definitely feeling more fall-like. The remnants of the hurricane may make it to DC over the weekend.
guess who has tickets for an outdoor one-day festival on Saturday!

I asked someone to play Ska for me, but they didn't know what that was! Had to explain it to them to get it done!

Too harsh, man.

it's not bigger news because 1) Brett F is hero in his state. 2) he's white. 3) white collar crime in poor states is so endemic it is boring.
