I read they had 100 writers. I wonder how many of those were FT? There's still some value in that brand if they knew what to do with it.

it did get me thinking about the others on DBD that actually have more academic jobs than i do and how publishing research is just a big component of career success. for me it is just a "cherry on top"

I don't see why the US should continue to send so much military support to Israel as long as this guy is in charge.

Expand full comment

I don’t think he wanted the current war or wants to annex Gaza (I think the last thing Israel wants is to govern Palestine), but Bibi needs to get lost in favor of someone who sees the longer term picture here. I get it that he is wary of the two state solution bc the last time it was quasi-tried, Gaza voted in a terrorist group, but there is really no other long term option.

Israel could try a one-state solution. However, Israeli conservatives and ultra-conservatives would actually have to treat Palestinians as actual human beings and not as something subhuman.

Which is not something they want to do.

if Trump gets back and follows through on these "I'm in charge" threats he keeps making, I expect that not only will he be purging staff from federal agencies, but he'll ignore both legislatively delegated authority and also budgets - essentially just put money wherever he and his minions do and don't want. They just have to wait 50 more years and it will be cherished as a historic stadium.

Expand full comment

I don’t think they would move because the stadium is outdated but rather because the development opportunity here is really pretty amazing. It would be a giant improvement in location. But, Reinsdorf is such a clown, I just don’t believe he could actually get all this done. He also pays no rent currently so I don’t think he really wants to move that badly

Expand full comment

I looked at the locations. While I think this will be a really nice location, I don't think it makes that much of a difference. It's still far from the prime downtown locations. I don't even like to go to Willis Tower because it's too far, and this is even further.

Expand full comment

I dunno, the current stadium is in nowheresville. This is smack dab in the area of town that has grown the fastest (South Loop, now full of condo towers and young folk), and is really close to where office types work. Plus it’s right by the museum campus, Buckingham Fountain. Would have amazing skyline views too. Main obstacle is Reinsdorf himself - a bumbling cheapskate only a few pubic hairs less of an ass than Fisher. I just don’t think he can get this done, would be a big lift for him to figure out

I hope the cities doing new stadium deals have some serious penalties or clawbacks for the eventual (inevitable?) team abandonment of civic resource. This is getting ridiculous.

If I were writing the contracts/penalties, cities would be due a portion of the real estate profits from any affiliated entity of team ownership, as such real estate profits are made within a certain radius of any new stadium/facility to which the team moves prior to the repayment of city investment in the original/existing stadium, either in state or or other state, for the life of that new stadium or until repayment made. See Braves abandonment of Turner Field for sweetheart back door deal real estate deal/enormous profits in Cobb County; see also the A's/Vegas. Might put an end to a lot of this nonsense.

Women's basketball (12-5 overall, 2-3 in conference) hosts Oregon State tonight at 7:00 and Oregon Sunday at noon. A sweep would put the Bears in good shape in their pursuit of a tourney bid. Two losses might render such dreams impossible and a split makes it difficult. As I see it the Bears need to finish 9-9 in the Pac 12 (8-10 might do it) so they're dealing with fine margins. Fortunately the squad is currently healthy. OSU will be the tougher of the two.

Thursday for movie night in Phoenix, we watched a double feature:

Upgrade

and

The Snowman with Fassbender and the Queen, Rebecca Ferguson.

Both somewhat heavy, with lots of killing. Upgrade was a trip, with gratuitous violence. Snowman makes me want to go to Norway…looked very pretty, and snowy. It was a slow movie - I remember wanting to see it in the theater when it came out but shied away because it got such a horrible review. On Netflix, it’s apparently gotten a little bump in popularity, and though it wasn’t the worst movie ever, you can see why it was initially panned.

Round steak is the American/British butchery cut of the cow's butt/upper leg. Cows use these muscles, so they are lean and lack flavorful fat. It is called "round" because the hind is butchered and looking down upon it, it is round in shape, including the round bisected thigh bone that runs through it. There are three main parts in the round - top, bottom, and eye - which are naturally partitioned through connective tissue. The top round can be cut into different thicknesses, which are then labelled differently (eg, thin Swiss Steaks, thick London Broil, whole beef roast). The very top of the top of that muscle isn't used as much and it is often called "Sirloin Tip", but it comes from the Round not the Sirloin area of the cow. It is tastier but has a gristle line running through it - including a fat cap on the outer part. It is gaining popularity because of social media under the Brazilian-butchery name - "pincanha". The bottom rounds are often cut up as "pot roast", "cube steak" because it is tougher. The eye is the toughest of all. Anything that has very little value is ground up, fat is added from another part of the cow, to make ground round - a relatively lean mix. And butchers will grind it with a fairly fine screen because it is a tougher meat.

In the 1960s, one of Mad Magazine's many song parodies was "Ground Round", sung to the tune of "Downtown". Here are a few lines from memory:

When you eat meat,

But hate the meat that you're eating,

Then you've surely got

Ground Round!

It's so unnerving

When they're constantly serving

In and eating spot

Ground Round!

It may be called a chopped steak, Salisbury, or beef patty

No matter what it's called it's always overcooked and fatty.

What can you do...
