i am enjoying my "new car" now that older one left for college. Subaru WRX.

i get it for at least a year until younger one learns to drive. and since it is a stick my wife is not inclined to drive it much, even though she was originally excited about the prospect of learning and driving a sportier car.

Looks luxurious and technological, and the design *looks* futuristic and sporty, but I don't get the impression that it's going to be a fun car to drive aggressively.

WaPo notes how (un)successful new Trump Kise is doing counseling his client. WaPo noted that Kise has given Trump good advice - keep his mouth/Truth finger quiet to keep from incriminating himself and stop being so combative with the Federal government. But it also noted that Kise refused to sign his last filing, which was quite combative as Trump appears to prefer to listen to Halligan, Corcoran, Bobb, Epshteyn, and Trusty who pander to Trump's whims. And pandering to Trump's whim is putting his lawyers in legal peril as Bobb had to get a lawyer as she was a note taker during meetings for the fake-electors scheme. Epshteyn had his phone seized by the FBI. And Corcoran is under investigation for obstruction of returning documents to the government. MAGA - Making Attorneys Get Attorneys.

SPAC deal. These have been falling out of favor. Folks seems to have forgotten about it, but there were several SPAC deals in the early 2000's including Wheels of Zeus (Woz) a vehicle started by Steve Wozniak when the IPO market was going through a nuclear winter.

I made a very good decision to skip the Cal game to catch The B-52s' farewell tour in DC on Saturday. They were as fun and irreverent as ever. Great set, and Cindy Wilson was killing it on vocals. 19/19

CruzinBears's avatar

Went snorkeling in Big Fisherman's Cove on Catalina (where $C's marine bio research facility is) and saw a record number of lobsters (50+) and rays (30+), as well as beautiful kelp, grasses and neon blue fish. Was much more entertaining than the Cal game that I could barely get enough service to check in on.

goldenone's avatar

A wise man. It was a brutal game to watch.

And I only watched the 1st half.

Top Gun: Maverick - we watched that this weekend, was my daughter's idea, and my wife was okay as well. To be honest, I thought about roughly first 75% was completely silly - but if I'm also 100% honest, I did like the last fighting was at least entertaining.

Went to the All Things Go one day festival on Saturday. Thoughts as follows:

I wasn't familiar with Faye Webster or Lucy Dacus, not my usual cup of tea, but I enjoyed their sets. Hippo Campus and King Princess were supremely ignorable. Mitksi... I have enjoyed some of her tracks; I HATED her performance. Like, might never listen to her music again hated. Bleachers was like a really good Jersey bar band but my dudes, you can't tell the crowd to get hyped if they aren't' with you already. And Lorde was fantastic.

DC Trojan's avatar

House of the Dragon: it's possible that Rhaenyra might be exceptionally stupid. Every decision is bad and backfires.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

My only issue is that in the 10 year jump, Rhaenyra went from looking like the little feral boy in Mel Gibson’s Road Warrior to an actress that now bore little to no resemblance…they might as well have cast Jessica Chastain.

CruzinBears's avatar

I just watched last week's episode and had the exact same response. It took me a solid 10min to be 100% sure it was the same character. Also the king not dying after he collapses at the end of Ep 6 and then having a ten year jump and he's still kicking seemed rather silly.

GoldenSD81's avatar

“They might as well have cast Jessica Chastain” is how I feel about 90% of the movies and shows I watch.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

That’s completely fair…she’s so solid.

Berkelium97's avatar

I finally started watching this a couple weeks ago. As someone who spent the first two seasons of Game of Thrones thinking "who was that again? and why are they allies/enemies?" I appreciate the much more narrow focus of HotD. And I appreciate the accelerated timeline as well.

I like Chinese and Japanese dumplings. Russian and other ex-Soviet state dumplings suck. The worst are eastern European dumplings, essentially balls of dough you put in soup/stew meant to give people enough calories so they don't starve behind the Iron Curtain.

Idaho State is winless. Charlie Ragle's record probably wasn't helped by hiring Dovonte Neal

https://www.espn.com/college-football/team?_slug_=idaho-state-bengals&id=304

SGBear's avatar

Cal Poly lost again. Beau Baldwin is now 3-15 (1-11 conference) as HC @ Cal Poly. Spencer Brasch has completed more than 60% of his passes in only two of his 11 games (one was 60.5%). He is starting again now that the starter got injured.

My take: big weddings are a farce.

EDIT: If Mrs Slug and I had our way, it would have been a small wedding and would have involved only family and a few friends and would have been limited to (checks notes) about 20 people, maybe less. The actual guest list was about 200 people.

Berkelium97's avatar

Our wedding was 25-ish people. It was a great, cozy size. Certainly helped with the budget, too.

atoms's avatar

My first wedding was about 120 people. It was lovely but honestly too much. My most recent wedding was about 35 people, and it was just the right size IMO. I only wish we had the venue a bit longer into the evening.

What is Kansas paying him now? I know it won’t happen since some bigger school will probably go and hire him for &6 million.

Football players and fucked up fingers are so common. Tory Holt, Anthony Munoz, Ronnie Lott, Booger McFarland all come to mind when looking at that picture.

SGBear's avatar

Iowa's QB Petras threw a TD, doubling his TD pass total to two. Then again, that one TD was more than Plummer threw. The Hawkeyes' lost to the Fighting Harbaughs 27-14.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore/_/gameId/401405100

SGBear's avatar

Iowa's physical mascot is Herky the Hawk and they use a hawk's head as their icon. However, the Hawkeyes are not named after a hawk. It is named after Natty Bumpo's nickname from James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans."

space_lab's avatar

Oregon beats the Cardinal 45-27. Despite CU sucking, Stanfurd (1-3, 0-3) is still in last place in the Pac12. The Card don't play CU or Arizona this year.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/recap?gameId=401404005

heyalumnigo's avatar

When Cal plays Furd, Wilcox should just remove Musgrave's pass portion of the play chart. All runs.

SGBear's avatar

Cal got 9.3 ypc against Arizona. Oregon just racked up 9.5 ypc against Stanfoo.

SGBear's avatar

Three Pac-12 teams are in the bottom 5 rush defense in FBS. #124 Stanfurd 5.85 ypc. #125 Arizona 4.93 ypc. #130 CU is 6.69 and they're not even close to #129 South Florida (5.96 ypc). CU gives up nearly 300 yards rushing per game. Frighteningly, CU is not last in the country. That's Hawaii at 6.90.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It’s actually not a bad idea for all the games, not just Stanford. Plummer’s downfield accuracy and decision making are suspect…

GoldenSD81's avatar

I just want to see us go full wildcat with Ott and another RB in the backfield.

goldenone's avatar

Triple option would be nice.

Justbear's avatar

Yeah we have so many RBs.

(I think she will get along well with GB49)

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

That would work, provided Cal’s O-linemen quit tackling the f-ing ball carrier. Happened twice FFS.

FiatSlug's avatar

Whaddya need Plummer for, then? Millner could hand off just as well, probably.

EDIT: While you're at it, why punt? It probably wouldn't hurt our W-L record.

SGBear's avatar

Justbear's avatar

Or if we lose to Colorado first game off bye week, then that's a loss on bye week

GoldenSD81's avatar

We have never lost but we typically only win them by a score of 17-13.

goldenone's avatar

Nope we can't lose - and hopefully the clock is ticking on some significant staff adjustments. Speaking of Geep Chryst, what are our TE's doing on the field? Mostly not blocking nor targeted in the passing game. He must be pretty bummed about Musgrave's approach.

g.oso's avatar

And still won’t cover the spread against bye

SGBear's avatar

Utah grinds up Oregon State 42-16. OSU's QB Chance Nolan went to the bench allegedly with an injury but after he threw two picks. OSU went with their 3rd string QB and former Cal commit Ben Gulbranson - who also threw two picks.

O.Overall's avatar

I was surprised how competitive this game was. This plus the game at OSU brings SC down to Earth for me. Their D is only so so. They may win the conference, but I don’t think they are a national title contender at all. They could easily lose to one/more/all of UCLA, Oregon, Utah, UW, Wazzu (assuming they play them, not sure of schedule)

DC Trojan's avatar

I don't know what counts as "mainstream" or perhaps more appropriately "sane" opinion among my fellow alumni, but the defense seemed like the obvious weak point before the season started, like the plan *had* to be "score early score often" to stay in games. I've frankly been surprised that it's gone as well as it has so far, the halftime changes in scheme 1) happening and 2) seeming to work are a bit of a novelty after the previous regime. Given how pathetic the last couple of years were, winning the conference would be a delight (for me that is). This team is nowhere near national championship calibre and that's completely okay.

O.Overall's avatar

They definitely look leaps and bounds better than last year, and are in the top band of PAC 12 teams for sure. But I think if they played Georgia or something the result would likely be similar to what happened to Oregon

Tangtpt's avatar

That USC offense is scary when it's running on all cylinders.

goldenone's avatar

Not as close as the final score indicated.

DC Trojan's avatar

I didn't watch the whole thing but UCLA was broadly doing what they wanted during the phase that I did see. I'm always here for anyone denting the bizarre belief of Washington fans that the sleeping giant has awakened, even if it is UCLA.

In a somewhat surprising move, Paul Chryst (brother of Cal TE coach Geep Chryst) has been sacked.

https://twitter.com/ESPNRittenberg/status/1576711189182271488

Odd move. Maybe they thought he wasn't going to bring the team back to the success he enjoyed in his first few years as coach (34-7 from '15-'17, and 33-19 since then).

DC Trojan's avatar

I didn't get the impression that Wisconsin was having a bad season but since they aren't conference opponents yet, I wasn't really paying attention.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

They looked awful Sat v a fired-up Illinois team in Bielema’s return. But if Wisconsin administrators were waiting for an uninspired performance v. a mediocre conference foe at home, they sure got it.

Chryst’s record at Wisconsin is 67-26…meanwhile, Wilcox is 29-30. One of them is looking for a job tho…puzzling.

Fire Starkey's avatar

we have room for another Chryst analyst on the staff

SGBear's avatar

If you don't like my idea, you're the anti-Chryst.

goldenone's avatar

2-2 is a bad season in Madison.

DC Trojan's avatar

I don't know what they think their ceiling is. Six conference championships since 1993, a long streak of bowl games, and Chryst was what, 6-1 in bowl games or something? It's not like they're squandering Florida talent in recruiting or something.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Chryst and Wisconsin as a program and especially their offense have been trending down lately. Supposedly their DC Jim Leonard was a target of Nebraska and this was a preemptive move to keep him.

F1: Sergio Perez wins the Singapore Grand Prix thanks to a steady, consistent performance on a slick, difficult street circuit

https://www.thedrive.com/accelerator/sergio-perez-pulls-off-masterful-win-at-rain-soaked-singapore-f1-gp

he rain-soaked 2022 Singapore F1 grand prix got off to a late, messy start. What wasn't messy, though, was Red Bull driver Sergio Perez's driving. Perez started in P2 but quickly jumped ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the start of the race, giving himself a lead he never relinquished. Despite a humid, soggy track that wouldn't dry up until the final laps, Sergio Perez's masterful driving held off an almost equally brilliant performance by Leclerc to take the win in Singapore.

“It was certainly my best performance, I controlled the race. The last few laps were so intense. I gave it everything for the win today,” said Perez after the race. However, there's a chance Perez's hard-fought win could be taken away, due to a potential penalty for possibly driving too close to one of the day's many safety cars. For some reason, the powers that be at the FIA decided to make their decision regarding Perez's fate until after the race, so we have to wait until later in the day to see if Perez's victory stands.

Going to an F1 race is kinda ridiculous. I've been to the Singapore Grand Prix and either you pay a huge amount of money to get an elevated box seat or else you see a tiny section of the track and they're going so fast that you can't see who is who. So you end up watching it on TV. And it is insanely loud.

Not gonna happen, at least not under Knowlton. He seems content with .500 football and the limited fan interest in a mediocre team.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree but I also realize that isn’t happening. Wilcox can go 5-7 and he will be welcomed back and it’s only a 50/50 chance he replaces his OL coach and OC.

docsuess84's avatar

So I’m kind of detached from the greater college football world. Who would be people’s short list of OC’s and O line coach replacements for Musgrave and McClure? Are they even realistic choices? Genuinely curious because I have no idea. Really makes you appreciate the Coach M days. Having an O-line impose its will on a defense and they couldn’t do anything about it sure was good times.
