Welcome to the Daily Bear Dump, a Write for California community board where one can talk about pretty much anything, like…
ASU’s official mascots have been an owl, a “normal”, bulldog, and then in 1946 changed to a Sun Devil. Two years later, Stanfurd alumnus and ex-Disney illustrator Bert Anthony designed “Sparky” - a devil with a pitchfork - was supposedly modeled after Walt Disney.
Trump gets visibly & audibly upset about the lack of a jury at his NY court hearing. Nevermind that it was his own under-qualified lawyer who neglected to file for a trial by jury
I was settling in for a long & amusing read about the 'full list' of trump for speaker supporters. Turns out the list has 3 names. The article is in Newsweek online. I had totally forgotten that Newsweek became nothing more than a click-bait machine after Tina Brown turned it into a gossip rag. 2 minutes of my life wasted.
On this day in 1958 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State 34-14. The Bears, who had entered the game as seven-point underdogs, were led by quarterback Joe Kapp who was seven for ten passing and ran 15 times for 62 yards. The Bears raced to a 22-0 lead twice holding the Cougars after they drove inside the Bear ten yard line, first by stopping a fourth down attempt then with an intercepting. Cal had lost its first two games but the WSU victory was the start of a run of seven wins in eight games that culminated with their most recent Rose Bowl invite.

Speaking of bears, I found another school with a bear mascot. I was walking through the parking lot at the park I visited yesterday and noticed a license plate holder for the bears of Lenoir-Ryhne Univ.
[MTEN] Carl Emil Overbeck won his two qualifying matches to reach the Main Draw at the ITA All American, which is in Tulsa OK. He faces Florida's wunderfreshman Jeremy Jin in what should be an even match.
[WTEN] #47 Jessica Alsola won her two qualifying matches to reach the Main Draw at the ITA All American, which is held in my hometown. I may go watch her match today, but she'll be an underdog from here on out
Ha, the lack of velocity reminds me of my niece’s soccer game that I attended Saturday - the kiddos are 8. None of them can square up the ball, so a vast majority of the kicks are all squibs. One of the kids had a 1 on 1 breakaway and of course miss-hit the ball such that the goalie had time to walk 4 feet to her left and was able to just pick up the ball.
Reminded me of Meet the Parents…YOU GOTTA SPIKE THOSE FOCKER!!
Fire at Illinois' stadium. Damage to be assessed. They are scheduled to host Nebraska on Friday. Fire reportedly came from vehicles on fire, but haven't ruled out that the dumpster fire of their season didn't spark it.
In DC they had a shooting in a park two blocks from the White House Sunday night. Monday a congressman was carjacked about a mile from the Capitol and a couple blocks from Nats Park by three (he thinks because they were wearing masks) kids with guns. Then last night a shooting near the soccer stadium not far from where the carjacking was. It's at the point where I really don't go to many areas of DC anymore.
I saw an article in the Post that most of the shootings are, as you would expect, among people who know one another, so just that surge alone would be bad, and then you add in some spread to typically "safe" areas... although tbh before the stadium, you'd not have been hanging around that neighborhood of an evening if you didn't have to.
Youth rugby team scores on final play and then kicks the conversion in an attempt to score the two points needed to tie. The kick is short and the apparent winning team starts celebrating. One lad kicks the ball in celebration before it lands, knocking it through - scoring the two points needed for the tie.
Remember Bear fans Cal has never lost a Big Game in a year that the Phils have won the pennant. 1950, '80, '83,'93, '08,'09, 2022. (Philly also won the pennant in 1915 but their was no Big Game that year.)
Yes, but logistics got in the way. In a best-of-3 series, fans are only guaranteed 2 games. If you're going to give the lower seed team *just one game to host*, your choices are Game 1 or Game 2.
If the schedule was done NBA style, Game 1 would be at the higher seed's ballpark, Game 2 would be at the lower seed's ballpark, and Game 3 (if necessary) would be at the higher seed's ballpark. That's a lot of traveling for three games.
A better way is to schedule Game 1 at the lower seed team's ballpark with Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) at the higher seed's ballpark. But even that's kind of strange in that the higher seed doesn't get Game 1 and a best-of-3 set is broken up between two different ballparks.
You can almost see the eventual progression to adding one more wildcard team in each league, two best-of-5 series in each league (#3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5) and the top two seeds taking a bye in the first round. Too much? Too soon?
Weather has always been the point of contention about expanding the playoff field once it the League Division Series was added. Aside from weather considerations, athletes simply wear out in the course of playing (does the math) 174 to 183 games from the League Division Series on up to the World Series (176 to 186 games if a Wildcard team makes it to the World Series).
Does anyone else think that with such a lengthy schedule an element of demolition derby is introduced into the playoffs? Which players are going to be exhausted, or worse, injured during the playoffs due to the lengthy schedule?
Yeah but that’s what I am saying, who is watching a WC game in the middle of a workday? I think they would get better ratings if they had two games at 4, two at 7. A 1pm Tuesday game is just ridiculous
Kids are watching a ballgame in broad daylight on a workday. That's how you grow your audience.
Setting the first pitch for late afternoon/early evening (after the adults are home from work) means that kids will see less of the game and will be less invested in the game when they become adults.
i guess it is better than a 1-game wild card series which felt like a vary arbitrary way to decide things in the playoffs, especially for the division winners
Did you guys see Kimbrel intentionally balk in order to move the runner from second to third so he couldn’t steal signs? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before!

Current odds:
OSU (-9.5) @ Cal; Arizona @ USC (-21.5); CU (-4) vs. ASU; Wazzu @ UCLA (-3.5); Utah (bye); Oregon (bye); Washington (bye)
Other than a Cal getting the upset, I am hoping for ASU to beat the Buffs. That would be so embarrassing for Prime.
Missing - Stanf*rd, who also has a bye week.

Wild card round ...
all 3 games are played at better seeds park?
isnt that strange that there is not at least 1 game in the worse seed's park?
it seems that they change the format of the wild card round very often and i can barely keep up w/ the changes.

At that point you probably have to shorten the regular season, because the playoffs are extending into winter weather for some locations.

This is not different from how the other playoff rounds have historically worked. Plenty of weekday daytime games.
