The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 was awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton "for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks"
maybe a bit of a stretch to call artificial neural networks a physics thing, aside from the fact that it has accelerated much research and discovery in physics and some of the principles were based on physics way back when ..
FAIRFAX – The California men's golf team put itself in position to contend for a third consecutive Alister MacKenzie Invitational title by shooting 32-under-par across 36 holes Monday at Meadow Club. The Golden Bears, winners of the past two MacKenzie Invitational titles and 13 of 19 overall, shot 266-270 in rounds one and two and are in third place and nine shots off the lead entering the final 18 holes of play.
SAN DIEGO – The California men's tennis team concluded play in the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic on Sunday, with Alex Aney winning in singles and partnering with fellow sophomore Ethan Schiffman to win in doubles at the Hogan Tennis Center.
Aney defeated UC Irvine's Max Fardanesh 6-2, 6-3. Schiffman and Aney beat the Anteaters' Fardanesh and Rithvik Krishna 7-6(6).
BERKELEY – California volleyball responded in the best way possible to being swept in its last outing, taking to the court Sunday afternoon with a newfound fire and defeating visitor NC State in straight sets, 25-19, 25-21, 25-14, to earn its first ACC win as a program and improve to 9-7 (1-3 ACC) on the year while snapping a four-match losing streak.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 6 California men's water polo team closed out a four-game road trip with a 14-9 loss Sunday at No. 1 UCLA.
Senior Max Casabella and freshman Alex Oprea led the Golden Bears' (8-6) offense with two goals apiece. It was Casabella's 11th multi-goal effort of the season and the third for Oprea.
Berkeley, Calif. – The 20th-ranked California field hockey team (6-3) fell to the defending champions and top-ranked team in the nation, North Carolina, 3-1, on Sunday at Underhill Field in Berkeley, Calif.
Absolutely, UNC had outscored its previous 7 opponents by 28-2, which includes lots of ranked teams. Cal was the first team in six games to not be shut out.
I"m still in 99% media blackout regarding Saturday evening. Avoided looking at any articles aside from the title. Certainly no comments, no highlights, and on podcasts of CFB, I fast forward through those parts.
A few weeks ago I stumbled into a P-cast I had seen but decided to finally check it out...pretty good, not the usual CFB p-cast style - Split Zone Duo. Read the episode text but have yet to listen.
The Week 6 Hurry-Up is our recap of everything we found interesting in the college football weekend, delivered in 30(ish) minutes:
There were several egregious holdings in the open field that were not called also. The ACC refs have decided that Miami is the conference winner this year, and no poor play on their part will stop it.
Since the permanent switch to football in 1915 only two California head football coaches who’ve served for more than one year have failed to have a winning season: Marv Levy (1960-1963) and Tom Holmoe (1997-2001). They were a combined 20-68-3. They were 1-9 in Big Games and a 5-13 vs. U$C and UCLA. Holmoe also managed to land the Bears on probation. Both enjoyed considerably more success in later ventures. Levy as head coach of the Buffalo Bills (four straight Super Bowl appearances) and Holmoe as AD at BYU.
Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season. This feature is brought to you by the National Donut Foundation. Donuts are mother nature’s way of saying, I love you.
Holmoe had no HC experience before Cal. He had Bill Walsh's endorsement, though, which was enough to sway John Kasser, who was AD at the time. Kasser also was pissed with the alumni committee who overrode his decision to hire Bob Davie (who later was HC at Notre Dame) and pushed Steve Mariucci. Hence, because Holmoe was DC under Mariucci and there was a short runway between Mariucci leaving for the 49ers and NLI day, Holmoe got the job.
best of 5 for League Division Series (starting in 1995. This was the introduction of a wildcard team into the MLB playoffs)
best of 7 for League Championship Series (starting in 1985. Was best of 5 from 1969 through 1984)
best of 7 for World Series (from 1905. 1903 WS was best of 9. There was no 1904 WS).
Wild Card series started as a one game series between two wildcard teams in 2012. The winner advanced to the League Division Series where it played the top seeded division champion in a best of 5 series. It remained a 1 game playoff through 2019.
In 2020, because the COVID pandemic shortened the regular season to only 60 games, the Wildcard series (best of 3) was brought into existence. 8 teams in each league played a best of 3, the winners advancing to the Division Series which was a best of 5, followed by the League Championship Series (best of 7) and the World Series (best of 7).
The 2021 MLB playoffs reverted to the 2019 format, where the Wildcard playoff was a one game playoff in each league.
In 2022, the Wildcard Series was expanded to 3 Wildcard teams in each league and included the lowest seeded Division champion. Consequently, there were two Wildcard series in each league and it became a best of 3 series.
Going to vote early in Georgia too, in person and not mail in. Atl area mail is a mess, plus I want my vote "counted" ahead of election night. With all of the now mandatory recounts in Georgia, anything that can be done to speed all that up will help. But I wouldn't really count on the Georgia vote to be final for days after the election day. Fun times.
Exactly. It's a dark day that State Board of Elections has become politicized so I can no longer trust my absentee vote being counted. Fuckery abounds.
I used to do that (take my kids to the poll) when mine were littles. Now the county encourages early voting by mail, Ballot Drop Box, or in person at a Vote Center. I assume most youngsters are now filling out the ballot at the kitchen table with their parents then dropping it in a box.
HAG - I watched the first two episodes of Culinary Class Wars on Netflix. On one hand, it's really hard for me to get used to the show's slow overly dramatic pacing, imperfect dubbing, and cultural differences of Korean vs. American TV. On the other hand, it does have some interesting takes on a really well-trod genre - cultural bias in food, food snobbery, emotionally evocative food vs. actually good food. Personally, I like that they don't create artificial limits on the first round - just cook good food with whatever ingredients you want in an appropriate amount of time. The added bonus is watching Paik Jong-Won be a complete glutton.
Nobel Prize week
Shoot me, but I’d trade this for a Natty.
yesterday - medicine for micro RNA
today - physics for artificial neural networks

I agree. You might as well start awarding a Nobel in Math.
But supposedly all the previous Nobel Physics winners had a say? I wonder how the discussions went.
A giant stretch. Some of my colleagues are pissed.
i work in a company full of physicists and no one has anything nice to say

* CHARLOTTE??
And much more!
What was the call that Cal should really be mad about?
There were several egregious holdings in the open field that were not called also. The ACC refs have decided that Miami is the conference winner this year, and no poor play on their part will stop it.
Oh was it the illegal man downfield on the last TD?
You know, I’m pretty sure they still score, even that penalty was called.
Yes. 20 minute mark

That Holmoe tenure was brutal. Pro players that thought they could come in and run a team. Not sure he had any HC experience before Cal.

i liked Marv Levy .. especially as the Bills coach. he is 99 yrs old
PRO
Jets fire Saleh
Nathaniel Hackett has always been the issue for this team.
Lynch should immediately fire Staley and hire back Saleh as 49ers DC.
That's too Machiavellian for Lynch, so it won't happen.
Oh is A-a-Ron going to coach the team now?
Tigers beat the Guardians 3-0
Royals beat the Yankees 4-2
All divison series are tied 1-1.
i guess they made the Division series only 5 games since the wild card is now 3 games?
it seems that baseball playoffs are in constant state of flux ..

I think it's been 5 games for a while. Even when it was a single WC game back in 2021 it was only 5 for the division series.
hmm .. maybe i am just misremembering.
there was a time when it was 7 and 7 and no wild card?
or always 5 and 7?
From 1985 through 1993 there was a best of 7 LCS and best of 7 WS, no wildcard team.
I thought 5 and 7, but maybe I'm not remembering correctly.

Nine more days until I can vote

With all of the now mandatory recounts in Georgia, anything that can be done to speed all that up will help. I had errands near the courthouse yesterday so stopped by and voted. No more political ads on my TV, right.
Exactly. It's a dark day that State Board of Elections has become politicized so I can no longer trust my absentee vote being counted. Fuckery abounds.
I just saw in my USPS Informed Delivery that my mail in ballot is being delivered today.
Mine arrived yesterday Mon 10/7. My mother (same city, but tonier zip code) received hers on Sat 10/5.
I got a text yesterday from the California Secretary of State indicating that my ballot was mailed to me yesterday.
i like going to our kids former pre-school and casting my vote in person on that day. it is a short 5 min walk from the house
I used to do that (take my kids to the poll) when mine were littles. Now the county encourages early voting by mail, Ballot Drop Box, or in person at a Vote Center. I assume most youngsters are now filling out the ballot at the kitchen table with their parents then dropping it in a box.
I also like the communal aspect of polling places, seeing others and being seen. It strengthens one's commitment to democracy and community action.
I haven't even noticed if the local schools have Vote Here signs. I assume so but I wonder how many people vote in person vs by mail.
happy 18th birthday
Thanks, I can't wait until I can buy smokes and porn
Buy??
VAN DYKE: Mr. President, any child can pay $5 for pornography on any street corner. Isn't pornography too high a price to pay for the First Amendment?
BARTLET: No, pornography isn't too high a price to pay for the First Amendment. However, $5 is too high a price for pornography.
legally ..

Makes me wonder if this is why endzone celebrations are becoming thematically violent .
