NCAA approves elimination of national letter of intent program

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/41702974/ncaa-approves-elimination-national-letter-intent-program

The NCAA Division I Council has approved the immediate elimination of the national letter of intent program, the NCAA announced Wednesday, marking a historic shift to the recruiting landscape.

Established in 1964, the NLI program has existed as the formal, binding agreement between prospective athletes and college programs for the past 60 years. The NLI will be replaced by a new financial aid agreement that will provide many of the same core functions as the NLI and will likely be tied to a contract related to an impending revenue-sharing model across college athletics.

Under the new rules, transfer athletes will be allowed to sign with a new school after they've formally entered the portal. Per the NCAA, once a prospect has signed a written offer of athletic aid, other schools will be "prohibited from recruiting communications."

Won't they think of the fax machines?

Oh when I first read an article on this it used NLI, which I read as NIL. Confused the hell out of me why they were already getting rid of the NIL.

A real autumn morning. Started cool in the high 40s, low humidity, and warmed to the mid 70s. There will be no leaf peeping this year as the trees are smashed in the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed indefinitely. As my colleague who has a house up there noted "it would have been better if [his neighbors] lost everything in the storm because they're going to lose their business because tourism is closed this year and insurance wont' cover that".

A little light rain this morning, but after that, and for about a week nice fall weather. High of 70 +- 3 degrees, lows mid 40s (so no where near frost damage yet). Best weather of the year in the NW is usually mid-fall.

The heat wave is over. Yesterday evening as I stepped out of the North Berkeley BART station, I could feel the chill in the air, quite a contrast from the day before or even earlier that morning.

My Weather Underground widget now says that the highs all the way out to next Wednesday will be no warmer than 74 deg. F. Thursday and Friday of next week have forecast highs of 77 and 79, respectively. Cooler. Much cooler.

Only Murders in the Building (S4 E1-5, Hulu 17/19). The writing on this season is so so so good. Now that every character's personalities are set, they can go through their various gags at full sitcom speed without the need for long set-ups. Richard Kind is fantastic, but Molly Shannon is a bit of a weak link. Notwithstanding that, I had lots of belly laughs so far from season 4 - which is better than seasons 1 or 2.

"maybe HAG will cone out to NYC for NLCS vs the Dodgers, but they are not holding up their end of the bargain so far."

Two things related to that quote -

1. "maybe HAG will cone out to NYC..." Does that mean HAG will channel David Cone if he travels to NYC?

2. Dodgers need to pick it up if they want to move to the next round. It's now or never, tonight.

With a bullpen game, at least it won't be the starters that will blow it. Unless they go with an opener, then Knack for 2-3 innings, then the rest of the bullpen. I'm worried Knack will just get hammered. Most of his ERs this season have been on the long ball.

Nobel Prize in chemistry awarded to 3 scientists for work on proteins, building blocks of life

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/nobel-prize-in-chemistry-awarded-to-3-scientists-for-work-on-proteins-building-blocks-of-life/ar-AA1rWWZE?ocid=entnewsntp&pc=U531&cvid=db5c1f8d36f74828804a04c94a932899&ei=59

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Three scientists who discovered powerful techniques to predict and even design novel proteins — the building blocks of life — were awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday. Their work used advanced technologies, including machine learning, and holds the potential to transform how new drugs are made.

The prize was awarded to David Baker, who works at the University of Washington in Seattle, and to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper, who both work at Google DeepMind, a British-American artificial intelligence research laboratory based in London.

Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said the award honored research that unraveled long-standing scientific mysteries.

“That was actually called a grand challenge in chemistry, and in particular in biochemistry, for decades. So, it’s that breakthrough that gets awarded today,” he said.

==============================================================

How is this Cal related, you ask?

David Baker completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in 1989 (as per his biography at https://sites.uw.edu/biochemistry/faculty/david-baker/).

UW adds another Nobel Prize winner. UW claims 7 other Nobel Prize winners, 5 of whom are deceased. All previous winners were in Physiology and Medicine or Physics.

Fresh off a bye week, the No. 10 California women's soccer returns to Edwards Stadium to host two of the top programs in collegiate soccer. The Golden Bears host No. 1 North Carolina on Thursday afternoon before facing No. 3 Duke on Sunday afternoon.

Cal (10-1-2, 3-0-1 ACC), winner of nine of its last 11 matches, takes an 11-match unbeaten streak into the weekend. This is the best record the Bears have had through their first 13 matches since 2000, when Cal began the year 11-1-1.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts.

This season California will not play UCLA in football for the first time since 1932. The series began with a scoreless tie in Pasadena on November 4, 1933. The following year in Berkeley the “cousins” engaged in another low-scoring affair with the Golden Bears emerging victorious, 3-0. Cal kept the Bruins out of the end zone again in their third encounter in 1935, winning 14-2. The UCLANs finally hit pay dirt claiming a 17-6 win in 1936. Stub Allison (1935-1944) was a rare California head coach who had a winning record against their Southern California rivals going 8-5 (the school met twice a season during World War II). Jeff Tedford (2002-2012) also had a winning record in the rivalry, 7-4. Pappy Waldorf only managed four wins in ten tries against the Powder Blues. The last meeting between the two schools in November 2023 also marked the end of Pac-12 regular season play. The Bears won that game, 33-7.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season. This feature is brought to you by the National Asbestos Foundation. Asbestos, we’re not so bad once you get to know us.

Sitting right next to us in the front of the big box was a Cal alum, his UCLA wife, and their kids. Even though we were up at the top of the Rose Bowl, I'm glad it was enclosed because I think it got down to high 40s low 50s and we were in shorts.
