@GraceHadassah: I, a cis woman, received gender affirming care when I was 14. I was diagnosed with PCOS and put on the same androgen blockers and estrogen trans women take, for body and facial hair and to regulate my period. This continued until I was 33, and found out I was misdiagnosed. 🧵
Speaking of landscaping. I need some advice because my wife and I have a minor disagreement on backyard landscaping. We live in San Diego and the drought it terrible so I want to remove our grass in our backyard and install fake grass. She is against it and wants to keep the real grass, her reasoning being that fake grass is just as bad for the environmental as real grass.
She has also recommended just going with a desert or xeriscape and putting in DG.
I wouldn’t mind a DG/xeriscape but we have two small kids (4 and 2) and they play in the backyard a lot because it is a backyard and we have a kids swing set, hence why I want the fake grass.
What say you DBD? What would you do if you had two small kids and lived in San Diego and dealing with climate change.
I am not a fan of fake grass. Even the stuff that uses rubber pellets to help simulate the way blades appear and provide some cushioning like sod does.
Sand may be one possible substitute for grass in the swingset area. Unfortunately, sand gets *everywhere* and will get tracked indoors. I doubt that you or your wife would like that.
Maybe limit the grass to the area around the swingset (3 or 4 foot border)?
I have DG around the swing set. I am against sand and DG because I also have a pool in my backyard so that means between kids feet and wind, a lot of that will end up in my pool.
I read an article on a fantastic drought friendly (beautiful) front garden in LA recently, that had a patch of green that looked like grass but was actually something else that needs hardly any water. Let me see if I can find it.
IMO, you just can't have a lawn anymore. This water situation is never fixing itself, and we have to find other solutions.
Here we go. Best looking drought tolerant yard I've ever seen:
A large front “lawn” composed of native grass-like Carex pansa can transition from meadow to lawn with a simple trim. “A lot of people who want a manicured lawn fall in love with it,” Ongwiseth says.
I have a similar conundrum and was thinking of possibly going with pavers. Little cobblestone-style courtyard thing.
Downside of fake grass is it gets hot in the sun and you have to wear shoes to be on it, so if your yard is really sunny like mine it is not ideal. If you have good shade though, the fake grass works well. Agree with you on the desert landscape stuff - is fine for DINKs but if you have kids it renders your yard useless.
House MD (S3-E05). House has a 15 year old patient that is physically enamored with him. As it turns out, she has Valley Fever. On a related note, UC Berkeley study shows that the drought is causing an increase in Valley Fever. Valley Fever is usually harmless, but 5% can have long-term chronic problems. The article doesn't say if horniness is one of them.
Been enjoying "welcome to Wrexham" although the pacing could be described as deliberate - like they had a deal for X episodes but really only had like 0.75X worth of content.
I was watching the latest House of Dragons episode on Sunday evening and about 1/3 of the way through decided that was enough and turned it off. Not sure if / when I'll bother returning to it, as it stands, I just lost interest.

Why not? I think I will try some Cajun Turkey this year (as part of the day’s feast). Looks like they go on sale November 1. Thanks for the endorsement.
Do they do a package that's specifically for Thanksgiving? Or just a turkey offering that you like for a turkey occasion? (Popeyes came and went pretty quickly in this region, and is only slowly starting to creep back in, so I'm not familiar with their whole repertoire. But it sounds interesting!)
It’s just a pre-seasoned, brined and fully cooked turkey with their Cajun seasoning. It taste great and isn’t dry at all. I used the leftover to basically make a turkey Cajun soup.
Turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, either sweet potatoes or preferably yams candied with marshmallows, hot rolls with butter, celery sticks with cream cheese, Green beans are optional, but there needs to be some green veggie, and the family recipe for green beans is pretty hard to beat. And 2 pies, one pumpkin, and one for those who aren't big fans of pumpkin.
There once was a recipe, but now I just mostly wing it.
I make it in my KitchenAid mixer, so I don't defrost the ice cream at all. If you have a less powerful mixer, you probably want to let the ice cream sit out for 20 minutes or so before starting. Beat 1 qt vanilla (not vanilla bean, you need a French vanilla type) ice cream until it's soft. Add most of a can of defrosted Minute Maid lemonade concentrate, until you like the lemony-ness and sweetness. I recommend adding half, tasting, and then adding more bit by bit until you're happy. Beat in a small container of mostly defrosted Cool Whip. Dump it all in a graham cracker crust, swirl the top to make it pretty and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Cut and serve!
Graham cracker crust: ~8 sheets of graham cracker, half a stick of melted butter, 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar. If you have a food processor, throw in the graham crackers and pulse until they're finely ground. Add the melted butter and sugar and pulse until it's all thoroughly mixed and a bit wet. Dump into a pie dish (or a springform pan is great for this) and pack down with the bottom of a drinking glass or measuring cup. Bake at 375 for about 15 minutes until it smells great and is a little bit brown. Let cool before putting the filling in.
If you don't have a food processor, put the graham crackers in a gallon ziploc bag, seal it and roll over them with a rolling pin (or wine bottle or other heavy, cylindrical object) until they're crumbs. Add butter and sugar, reseal and shake the mix until it's all combined and damp. Proceed as above.
we were staying a short distance away from the spot where people flock to get pictures with the Brooklyn bridge in the background (a neighborhood called DUMBO apparently) and did I do it for the Gram? I did not.

I thought that was the second dumbest decision by a NFL coach this week, with the dumbest being Staley decision to go it on 4th and 1 against the Browns.
I would have played it conservatively and kicked the extra point. Assuming Carlson makes it, you're tied. The Raiders got a defensive stop and the ball back with about 2 minutes to play. All you have to do is get in position for a game-winning FG. If not, you go to OT.
@maybe he was playing 4d chess. He knew if they didn't make it that the Chiefs would be conservative and the Raiders could get the ball back (since they couldn't stop the Chiefs full offense) and kick a FG.@
Sorry to see the Raiders having so much trouble winning games but Davante Adams cannot be allowed to commit assault and battery because of it. Why was this guy not immediately apprehended? When I get frustrated at work it might not even be okay for me to throw my hat, but if I literally push someone down who gets in my way, I would be fired on the spot.
I certainly believe he felt remorse, even immediately, he seems like a smart guy. So he says it and then taps an “apology” on his phone and ESPN calls that an apology? Sorry, not good enough. You go find the guy and talk it over and pray he doesn’t sue your ass. Davante’s employer should suspend him for at least half the season, maybe all of it.
Sorry I had to post this under PRO, cuz there was nothing really PRO about it.
It was an unfortunate response, but any photographer working in or near the tunnel HAS to think twice and carefully about the position he puts himself in. I saw that and my first thought was "What did he think might happen?"
Yeah. Terrible call. The NFL should put an eye in the sky, a football judge not a medical professional, to oversee the refs, and make _everything_ reviewable when specific circumstances like this arise. Do they already have that?
I think it's pretty unlikely, at least for a while more. It was easy to fire the guys before Harbaugh because they had no connection to the university and they were spectacularly bad. Shaw is an alum who took them to the Rose Bowl. That will earn you almost a lifetime contract at a lot of places. If Stanfurd cares about football (that's a big if), they can't afford to replace a proven success that everyone seems to like for an unknown guy.
It will be interesting to see what happens with a lot of sports things on the farm. John Arrillaga died earlier this year, and he funded a huge amount of their program. As far as I'm aware, he only had one kid, a daughter who is married to Marc Andreesen, who focuses almost all of her philanthropy on an organization that educates and encourages people to be more strategic and impactful with their philanthropy. She is however an alum who teaches at the GSB so maybe she will continue to give to athletics at the same level her father did -- remains to be seen.
John Arrillaga's importance to Stanf*rd Athletics cannot be overstated. He was the prime mover and shaker behind the rebuild of Stanf*rd Stadium. It was his construction company that executed the demolition and rebuild and did so while working 16 hours a day during the run of the project from just after the Notre Dame game in 2005 until opening day in 2006. That's right, Arrillaga's construction team pulled off that project in *1 off-season*. Basically within a 9-month window. Arrillaga also funded more than $100 million of that project.
I remember checking in with the stadium webcams from time to time on the internet. It was fascinating how quickly everything moved.
As in, I don’t know what Stanford boosters are like. It seems possible that no one cares. I do recall going there on Big Game day as an undergrad and people being generally unaware of the Big Game happening or even what it was
Bullshit call. Also the commentary that the hit was to the neck and head area was just factually incorrect. You can see the forearm at the shoulder and not above it.
I did miss it in the sense that I was at a wedding reception but after the fact I was struck that even SC fans on twitter were saying it was nonsense, which is a good indicator of how bad a call it was
Yeah but after we beat Colorado and Washington we might have a reason for optimism. It would be so awesome if our game against UCLA was for the roses. First things first of course and we have to get out of Boulder with a W.
Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by Leopold’s Records.
Anniversaries: 2022 is the tenth anniversary of the opening of the refurbished Memorial Stadium. This is the 20th anniversary of Jeff Tedford’s first season as head coach. We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Play. It is the 50th anniversary of another Cal Big Game win that came on the game’s last play, 21-18. This is the 70th anniversary of the last of Pappy Waldorf’s six straight winning seasons. And this it the 100th anniversary of the third of Andy Smith’s Wonder Teams. The ’22 squad outscored opponents 398-34 while going unbeaten.
Cal trivia fun fact appears on DBD every Tuesday and Thursday during the football season.
We're also approaching the 10th anniversary of the end of the Tedford era.
The first Big Game I can recall attending in person was the 1972 Big Game. I was down at the rail in Section Q (I think) and watched Ferragamo roll to his left (coming towards me), throwing to Sweeney at the back of the end zone for the winning score with no time left.
A cliffhanger is defined as a game in which the winning score happens on the last play of regulation (meaning no OT games). There have been 4 cliffhangers in the Big Game series - 1972, 1974, 1982, and 1990. All 4 cliffhanger games have been at Cal Memorial, and they are evenly split between Cal and Stanf*rd as the winners. Cal has won on TDs (1972 and 1982); Stanf*rd has won on FGs (1974 and 1990).
The '74 and '90 Big Games were the most painful sports-viewing experiences of my life. Will never get over them. Then again I'll forever celebrate the aforementioned victories.
I attended both of those games as well. As tough as it was to watch the end of the 1974 Big Game, the end of the 1990 Big Game was simultaneously perplexing and enraging. I wanted to throttle Pat Flood.
Ah, the 1970 Big Game. Dave Penhall at QB beating the Plunkett-led Stanf*rd Ind**ns.. 'Furd went to the Rose Bowl that year and beat Ohio State; Plunkett won the Heisman.
I listened to that Big Game on the radio. I don't recall who did Cal's play-by-play, but it was NOT Joe Starkey.
[MTEN] Cal's Mikey Wright and John Kim won the ITA northwest regional doubles championship. On the singles side, Alex Chang and Lucas Magnaudet fell in the quarterfinals.
[WTEN] Cal's #50 Jessica Alsola won the ITA Consolation singles title. Alsola and her partner Katja Wiersholm had a good run in the doubles consolation bracket after upsetting a good Tennessee pair, but then fell to Auburn in the Consolation semi-finals.
[WSOC] Cal wins third in a row over the weekend, beating #29 UW 2-1 after beating #21 Wazzu. Cal is now #4 in the Pac12, but they're certainly looking up at #1 UCLA (11-0-0), #8 USC (7-1-1), and #14 Stanfurd (9-2-1).

Yeah, I would love a DG and xeriscape lawn when the kids are older and the swing set is gone but that is still 12 years away.

Going to see New Order/Pet Shop Boys tomorrow night
Pet Shop Boys? OMG
Started watch The Affair - got to episode 3 last night; I think it is a very powerful serious show.
Also finished episode 10 of session 2 of Reservation Dogs, I have loved this season so much, one of my faves.
I saw Hassan Minhaj’s new comedy special on Netflix - pretty funny! He should get a show again somehow; his delivery and timing are quite good, and he does not rely on grossness or nastiness for laughs, so has quite broad appeal.
Saw him at UCSD while he was still workshopping the new act. I'll be curious to see what's changed since then.
No 3 and I went to his show in SJ. It was really good. Both he and Trevor Noah (at Chase Center) were great.
I think he, Aziz, and Chappelle are probably the funniest stand ups at the moment.
Chappelle is the funniest standup of our generation.
I watched Werewolf by Night on Disney+. I found it amusing, fun, campy and overall a pleasant Marvel Halloween special.

You are gifted $250 for your current passion project. What would you buy?
A large amount of cheddar bay biscuits or a smaller amount of Jeni's ice cream.
Tools for lapidary and cutting cabochons. I've long had a passing interest in semi-precious stones and recently caught a bug, especially for turquoise. I have an obsessive trait where I want to make things from raw-form to finish. At $250, I'll be looking for used equipment.
I've spent a lot of nights in hotels with really comfortable beds lately, so I want a cloud like mattress topper (my current passion is MORE SLEEP).
More sleep. Good call.
A new handlebar light, or a Ping G425 5 wood.
Like SGBear, I am also doing landscaping so I would use it for one of my current landscaping projects.
I'm doing some landscaping. $250 would probably buy the lumber to build a 3-bin composting bin.
not quite a passion project, but i have always wanted to be able to frame my own stuff like photos and art. would be nice to have some of the tools to cut things at proper angles.
been thinking about it more recently because we have 3-4 things currently at the frame shop and it is NOT cheap.
I tried a custom paint by number kit. Turned out good enough to be worth it, though not great art, and had do deviate from the numbers somewhat. Still have to frame it.
My dad used to frame my sister's paintings/photos, etc in HS. He bought one of those mat cutters.
i thought your sister was good at it too. i was about to say that she is the one who inspired me to think of such a thing (or perhaps i am confusing her w/ someone else)
I remember senior year she and a Campo classmate both won some national painting contest. I think there were like 50 across the country?
I recently put up some prints and lithographs.
Bought the matting and frames at Michael's. Project worked out OK, and did cost around $250.
Must-have Thanksgiving dishes
Pumpkin pie. Everything else is negotiable.
Popeyes turkey.
Popeyes? As in the chicken place Popeyes?
Yep, the chicken place.
How good is the Popeye’s turkey? Scale of 1 - 19?
19 in convenience.
16 in taste and flavor. However, I like Cajun flavor and specifically Popeyes Cajun spice and flavor.
Why not? I think I will try some Cajun Turkey this year (as part of the day’s feast). Looks like they go on sale November 1. Thanks for the endorsement.

Yum!
For us, great Ham - we are not fans of turkey at all.
I forced my friendsgiving crew to adopt a bonus ham a few years ago and people have never been so grateful.
We deep fry the turkey, but I will still pass it up for more ham.
We save that for Christmas in many cases, or Easter.
Bc turkey sucks
Turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, either sweet potatoes or preferably yams candied with marshmallows, hot rolls with butter, celery sticks with cream cheese, Green beans are optional, but there needs to be some green veggie, and the family recipe for green beans is pretty hard to beat. And 2 pies, one pumpkin, and one for those who aren't big fans of pumpkin.
Non-Turkey main dish, potatoes of some variety, non-casseroled green beans, any pie but pumpkin
Turkey (prepared the Slug way, always moist and tender)
Preacher Potatoes (which are Beauregard yams prepared as per Mrs Slug's variation on a family recipe)
Cornbread stuffing (based on a Cook's Illustrated recipe)
Mashed potatoes (Mrs Slug's recipe)
Roasted brussel sprouts
Green beans and onions
Pies -
Pecan pie
Pumpkin pie
Apple/Pear pie
mit schlag (with whipped cream)
Provençale potato salad from Poulet on Shattuck.
They also sell roast turkeys starting 48 hours before Thanksgiving...
Overcooked turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, pumpkin pie.
this sums it up perfectly
stuffing .. that is by far my favorite part.
not sure what our Thxving eating will look like this year given that we have plane tix to Madrid. i guess jamon y queso ..
Chinese sticky rice stuffing with chinese sausages and shitake mushrooms.
sounds like something to be thankful for in real time
This is the correct answer.
Four favorite pies
1. pumpkin
2. apple
3. Lemonade (a mix of vanilla ice cream, lemonade concentrate and cool whip in a graham cracker crust)
4. Peanut butter ice cream pie in a chocolate cookie crust
Your Lemonade pie sounds great! Is there a recipe, or do you just wing it?
There once was a recipe, but now I just mostly wing it.
I make it in my KitchenAid mixer, so I don't defrost the ice cream at all. If you have a less powerful mixer, you probably want to let the ice cream sit out for 20 minutes or so before starting.
I don't consider cheesecake a pie (it's in the name, folks) but if y'all are saying it's a pie it goes into the tied-for-first slot.
My daughter is so amazing, I'll have to ask her between 15-30 types.
4. Pumpkin, 3. Blueberry, 2. Dutch apple, 1. Banana cream
Black berry or Marion berry, Cheesecake, Cherry, Apple...but why limit yourself? Peach, Rhubarb, Strawberry, Pecan, Chocolate, Lemon, Strawberry/rhubarb, apple/strawberry, Walnut, Mincemeat, huckleberry, blueberry...
1. Cheesecake 2. (tie) Peach/Strawberry 3. Dutch apple 4. Banana cream
I continue to espouse that cheesecake is not, in fact, a cake, but is a pie.
4. Apple, 3 Blueberry, 2 Banana cream, 1 Chess
in no particular order ... (sour) cherry, pecan, key lime, chocolate cream
i try to make at least one cherry pie a year when sour cherries are in season around the last few weeks of Jun.

Sorry I had to post this under PRO, cuz there was nothing really PRO about it.
Devante Adams' activity in question.

It was an unfortunate response, but any photographer working in or near the tunnel HAS to think twice and carefully about the position he puts himself in. I saw that and my first thought was "What did he think might happen?"
I agree. I think this is being a bit over blown right now.
Apropos: this is also roughing the passer, per NFL refs. Somewhere out there, Tom Brady is chuckling.

I'm glad Zack Follet played 15 years ago.
Yeah. Terrible call. The NFL should put an eye in the sky, a football judge not a medical professional, to oversee the refs, and make _everything_ reviewable when specific circumstances like this arise. Do they already have that?

Stanford appears to have a rapist on campus. Again. This isn't good.

Is it possible Shaw gets fired? I don’t really the politics there. It feels kind of like the end of the end of the Tedford era here
I think it's pretty unlikely, at least for a while more.
Despite the stadium being rather boring and basic, that is still an insane accomplishment.
Nah, they ain't playing like that.

I did miss it in the sense that I was at a wedding reception but after the fact I was struck that even SC fans on twitter were saying it was nonsense, which is a good indicator of how bad a call it was
Jeez.

Both teams look pretty good! I would def watch their rivalry game if it is not at same time as Big Game.
Of course, fuck them both for eternity though for blowing up the PAC 12.
I think that late season games at Purdue and Rutgers go some small distance in that direction
sometimes it's Pac12 after dark in the sense that it really shouldn't be seen

What do the emojis above represent? Hint: they are not bruins.
but the bruins have a 1000% better chance at roses than we do
Yeah but after we beat Colorado and Washington we might have a reason for optimism.
Ugh, I went to that Nevada game. Not a fond memory!
That's my fourth favorite Big Game after '82, '09 and '70 with '19 in fifth place.
It was my first Big Game victory in person after three defeats. A glorious day.
Holy God, it's been 10 years already?!?!
Hard to believe. We used to park at the east rim, walk over to the fence and look out at the construction.
The old Memorial Stadium was always accessible. Is the new Memorial gated throughout?
Go Bears!!!
