My social media is covered with shots of the aurora borealis last night. Wife and I drove to a relatively dark place. We couldn't really see it as there was still enough light pollution that you couldn't be sure. As it turns out, most of the shots were taken with "night shot" option on people's phones. If you can't see it with your naked eye, does it really count?

Lots of our favorite astronomical phenomena we only see in pictures. Being able to take the picture yourself makes it that much better.

When I was at the beach last month, I could see the Milky Way with my eyes better than my phone could see it. Actually I was surprised I could even get pictures of the stars with night shot, which had a 3 second exposure.

Too foggy year to see the aurora though. That's SF for you.

I couldn't really see anything (maybe the northern horizon was slightly green), but some colors were showing up with long exposure photos. But I don't think it counts unless it's clearly visible to the eye.

sort of doesnt count i would say. the beauty of the aurora is to experience w/ naked eye.

Sharks lose to the Blues 5-4 in OT. Their overall No 1 pick this year scored on his 3rd shift and also picked up an assist. Their No 1 pick last year (4th overall) is named Will Smith. During the draft he walked out to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. They're still going to be at the bottom of the NHL because their D isn't very good and they're not deep, but things are looking up, hopefully.

First goal was a spin-o-rama off a d-man's skate. Still counts and looks like a laser-shot into the corner.

They were up 4-1 and blew it. Worst lead in the NHL is a 3 goal lead.

EVERYONE WATCHES WOMEN SPORTS - i need to get one of those t-shirts.

WBNA finals game 1 - NY Liberty seemingly on its way to easy game 1 victory, up 15 w/ 5 min to go. the Lynx (Minnesota) pull off a stunning comeback and win in OT.

missed the end of the Yankees game since this game went into OT.

Lynx are down 3 with a few seconds to go when Courtney Williams, hits a 3, gets fouled and hits FT to go up by 1.

"Williams was the star of the night for her four-point play. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it was the first time in a regular-season or playoff WNBA game that there was a four-point play in the final 10 seconds and the free throw gave that team the lead."

I was at the gym peeking at the game. Looks lke the Liberty pulled a Cal and blew it. The 4 point play was brutal. Also looks like they were reviewing a foul with just about no time left. Hard to see if there really was a foul.

WNBA Finals: Minnesota pulls of an improbable 95-93 OT game 1 win, storming back from an 18 point deficit with less than 5 minutes to play, a four point play to take the lead with 5 seconds to go, blocking the potentially game winning shot by Breanna Stewart with 2 seconds to go only to foul her when she rebound the shot and there is a replay supported call that sends Stewart to the line to shoot 2 while down 1. Stewart makes 1 and misses the second. OT went back and forth and Stewart ended up missing a game tying layup with no time left.

49ers defeat Seattle on the road 36-24 by going up by 20 and then holding off the Seahawks, who made it a one score game with 1:44 to go.

The problems aren't getting better, they're getting worse.

I am no longer certain that the 49ers make the playoffs this year.

Expand full comment

Won by double digits on the road at the division leader. That's not bad.

The injury list is bad though. That will be the limiting factor, but this is football. Health is pretty significant to the success of the season for every team at every level.

Expand full comment

And yet they can't put the hammer down in the 2nd half. The 49ers should have blown out Seattle last night, playing against a flawed QB (Geno Smith) and a mediocre defense.

This is reminiscent of Super Bowls where Shanahan was either an OC (Atlanta, Super Bowl LI) or the HC (SF 49ers, Super Bowl LIV, and Super Bowl LVIII). 2nd half leads of 25 points, 10 points, and 10 points were erased; all were losses.

I posit that Shanahan has peaked. It won't get better.

Expand full comment

Agree about Smith being "flawed", but he led the NFL in passing going into last night's game, so SF did a pretty good job on balance defensively.

The inability to finish more drives, and the mistake of chasing points with the failed 2 pt conversion, is troubling. Getting the RB group semi-healthy again I suspect will automagically make a big difference. Whether its a Mahomes-proof improvement is another matter, but that applies to a lot of teams.

You have a point about the health of the RB unit affecting the offense. But the offense didn't pull away from the Seahawks and they should have.

I couldn't care less about that improvement being Mahomes-proof. The 49ers tend to back off the running game when they should be pounding the ball late in the game. That's a ball control offense. That's how you beat Mahomes - keep his butt on the bench.

Bears prove to be unexpectedly resilient opponents in North Carolina

https://arstechnica.com/health/2024/10/rare-bear-meat-at-gathering-gives-10-people-a-scare-and-parasitic-worms

If you're going to eat a bear, make sure it's not rare.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that once the beast has been subdued, all danger has passed. But you might still be in for a scare. The animal's flesh can be riddled with encased worm larvae, which, upon being eaten, will gladly reproduce in your innards and let their offspring roam the rest of your person, including invading your brain and heart. To defeat these savage squirmers, all one must do is cook the meat to at least 165° Fahrenheit.

But that simple solution continues to be ignored, according to a report today in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. In this week's issue, health officials in North Carolina report that rare bear meat was served at a November 23 gathering, where at least 22 people ate the meat and at least 10 developed symptoms of a worm infection. Of the 10, six were kids and teens between the ages of 10 and 18.

There is a reason why prior generations cooked all meat, and especially that of carnivores and omnivores, very thoroughly.

The other day on my run I saw a guy with a bike near the entrance to Memorial Bridge going into DC. On the back of the bike there was a pole with the America flag on top and the Ukrainian flag below. There was a third flag below but I couldn’t see what it was. I went by the same spot this morning and could see the bottom flag said Republicans for Harris. Apparently his was to contact Virginians heading into work.

As far as I am concerned, the polls have showed slowing opinion shifts and lines have ossified again. As far as I am concerned, this election is essentially a coin toss and any polls are deeply flawed to the point where leads are not reliable due to inherent flaws in sample testing. The only group who is going to win out of this is opinion poll scientists.
