The Nunt'z people are a collection of eleven tribes in present-day Utah. The Spaniards called the Nunt'z "Yuta", which became Utah and the Utes as the Anglicized form. The University of Utah was formed in 1850 and the team adopted the Utes identity in the 1920s. Not all of the tribes gave the University permission to use the Utes name, so they co-used "Redskins" and "Redskin Braves" as their mascot. In the 50s, the university adopted Hoyo, a cartoon of a young Ute warrior. In 1972, the university dropped Redskins. Utah tried to shift to the Crimson Warrior - a Caucasian horseman dressed in Indian costume in the 1980s. In 1996, the Crimson Warrior was replaced by Swoop, a red-tailed hawk. In 2006, the NCAA sanctioned universities that used hostile racial/ethnic mascots. Utah continued to use the feather and drum icons but vowed to phase them out. Utah's helmets, which used to be a U in a circle with two feathers on the side are slowly being replaced by alt-helmets - the most common being a double-U
Utah's offense is as bad as our SJV/Finley-led offense. Their QB has excellent speed but poor accuracy and decision-making. I think Utah will struggle to exceed 13.5 points, let alone cover the spread. Cal and the under.
Just not sure where the unfettered optimism from some folks stems from regarding this coaching staff’s ability to go into a hostile environment against a top 20 team and keep things close, let alone win.
This Cal D’s lack of a pass rush stresses the secondary and makes average QBs look great…off a week to prepare, I’m fully expecting Nate Johnson to play his best game yet. Why wouldn’t he?
He'll probably have the game of his life and pass for 300 yards. Just because.
Also the lack of pressure from Cals line will be the deciding factor. Watching UCLA pressure on every down with 3 rushers and no blitz was eye opening against Wazzu. Latu lined up wherever he wanted and blew by his man.
My mental approach is just figuring the odds are we will lose, but what the heck, we have deficiencies but also some nice pieces and it’s possible we can win, so why not be positive?
When we are down 30 in the second quarter and I’m on my tenth beer, I reserve the right to change my mind 😀
Absolutely. And even though Mendoza got 2 somewhat short fields Saturday after the fumble and busted onside kick try, he nonetheless showed something back there in his first start and there are definitely reasons to be excited. He did lead a couple of long scoring drives.
Honestly, my strong Nega-bear status that Rollonuchairs/CalBear91 have saddled me with stems more from just the general strength of the Pac 12 this year and how other programs have hired better Head Coaches/staffs and simply developed their players better. In previous seasons, I absolutely think Wilcox could probably get the kids ready on a night or two to ugly out an upset if things broke right. But the Conference is so strong right now, I think he’s just way overmatched. He doesn’t know how to fix this.
Meanwhile Kyle Whittingham has won back-to-back P12 titles by instilling a toughness in his teams. We’re going to go into Salt Lake and beat THIS team, off a loss and a BYE? Good luck.
Before most games I have a definite feeling for how it will go and being a seasoned Cal fan I'm often right. But for some reason I haven't a clue how this one will go. No outcome will surprise me. The over/under total looks spot on. I recommend bettors stay away from this game.

It was the Bears third of five successive wins after an opening loss en route to an impressive 7-3-1 record in what would be their best season in six years. Steve Bartkowski hooked up with Wesley Walker for a 70-yard TD pass while Chuck Muncie reeled off a 46-yard TD run and hit Dave Bateman on a ten-yard option pass for yet another score. Muncie carried 20 times for a 126 yards as Cal amassed 455 yards of total offense before applying the breaks in the fourth quarter.

BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team competes at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Friday through Tuesday at Stanford. Eight of the Golden Bears will be vying for singles and doubles titles along with the chance to advance to the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
Cal's top duo of Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm along with pairs Hannah Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika, Berta Passola Folch and Makenna Thiel, and Lan Mi and Cami Brown will play in doubles on The Farm. All eight will also compete in singles.

The Golden Bears (5-3-5, 2-0-3) look to remain undefeated in Pac-12 play while the Cougars (8-5, 1-4) have struggled through the first half of their conference season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. PT.

With more than 160 combined goals scored in their careers, California field hockey graduate transfers Daniella Rhodes and Bente Baekers both agreed there is a certain mindset needed to make a great goal-scorer.
"What makes us good goal-scorers is being relentless in the circle," Rhodes said. "Once we get into the circle our goal is to get one in the cage, not even get a shot on target. I want to get it past the keeper, and I want to do whatever it takes to get it in the back of the net."

Although now that I think about it, the only lake-like bodies of water I can think of are reservoirs. There's Deep Creek Lake out in the west, but I know that one was man-made.
I went up there for a weekend a couple years ago. We rented a cabin, did some hiking, and generally had a pleasant time. It was early April, so it was in that nice window between too-cold and buried-in-mosquitoes season. From what I heard from the locals, the place is packed in the summers (that sounded unappealing to me).
I believe that's right - we have friends who go up there every summer, but since my wife & daughters were away in VT every year, we never needed a summer retreat from the heat more locally
Wow, I would not have guessed. Around Chesapeake Bay, that makes sense. But going west the topography goes from hilly to mountainous and one would think that surely there would be at least *one* natural lake somewhere in that area.
New Jersey and Maryland have some geographic similarities in that there is a plain near the shore and as you go west, there are rolling hills and finally a more mountainous region.
New Jersey also does not have many natural lakes. Most of its lakes resulted from damming a river to fill a valley. The two apparently natural lakes are Lake Marcia and Wawayanda Lake. The available data for both does not mention a dam.
When my brothers and I would stay at my grandmothers house she would would make us a giant slab of strudel with tons of butter for breakfast everyday (she was Slovenian). Then after we ate it she would proceed to brag about how all she ate for breakfast was half a banana. She lived to her mid 90s, so you are on the right track!

The Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet SS sales figures show why it never happened, but there's a small part of me that wishes GM had gone yolo and imported Holden utes to be sold as El Caminos.
There are a couple Chevy SSs around here rebadged as Holdens. The SS came out right when I was on the market for a new car, but it was too large, thirsty, and expensive for me at the time.
With as well as pickup trucks and nostalgic vehicles have done over the last two decades, I'm surprised GM has tried to reintroduce the El Camino.
It did strike me as kind of amazing that the SS has such appalling fuel efficiency. I can understand now people having them for a fun weekend car as they make the transition to "future classic," but I can't imagine using one on a daily basis if you're a 10k miles a year kind of driver. Mind you people use Suburbans and such that way, so I guess it's not _that_ out of the ordinary.
There's a guy in Indiana that is all in on the Holdens. He's got a couple of Holden sedans and at least one Ute. He's also totally into the Dukes of Hazzard.
i have been to Utah quite a bit, but almost exclusively for skiing and Delta stopovers.
while the vibe and the food and city is somewhat lacking compared to CO, the skiing and the snow is about as good as you can get. and if you consider that the slopes are about an hour from the airport, it is the easiest place to travel and ski from NY (and probably many other places too).
it is about the same amount of time and effort as it takes me to drive to northern VT for much more predictable conditions.
I absolutely believe that it's easier to get to SLC (since that takes Connecticut out of the mix) but now I'm curious: where in VT are you going that takes more than 6 hours from NYC to reach by car?
That all tracks. My sense of time to VT from anywhere near the city is thrown off b/c my clock starts either when I join the Thruway from NJ17 or at Newburgh, which is of course nowhere near the city.

The normal overly trigger happy Dave Roberts instead leaves his starter in homer after homer, and it was the only time in MLB history where any team hit 4 homers in an inning, much less all off the same batting practice pitcher.
I had no rooting interest, but just as a baseball fan I really like watching Corbin Carroll. So talented and so aggressive on the bases. Love it!
In the other NL series, I have kind of come around on Harper - he is a real gamer and I love the post dinger staredowns. We need more of that, is good for the game! Phils-DBacks would be a really fun NLCS
Arizona nearly handed the game back in the top of the 7th. Or rather, Ryan Thompson did.
Thompson got the last out of the 6th on the 1st batter he faced, and the first two outs of the 7th on the 2nd and 3rd batters he faced; 3 up, 3 down. With 2 away in the 7th, Thompson gave up 4 consecutive singles allowing 2 runs to score with the tying run on base. That's when Thompson was pulled.
Fortunately for the D'backs, Andrew Saalfrank came in and induced a ground ball to third for the 3rd out.
ugh. Hard to win when your top 4 hitters basically get 1 hit each. Will Smith was the only hitter that hit well. And the starters were hit hard. With all the injuries to the starting pitchers, it wasn't unexpected. The bullpen was lights out though.
When LAD got a guy on base in the 8th down 4-2 with Betts and Freeman coming up, it looked like something might happen there, but they went down lamely in succession. Basically the story of the series there.
I do wonder if that absolutely cataclysmic first inning by Kershaw in game one just got in their heads and psyched them all out. They were all pressing and anxious looking the whole time
I also wondered if Kershaw's 1st inning implosion in Game 1 had the psychological effect you pointed out. Thing is, Kershaw has these flailing outings from time to time. A team can't let it sour everything.
I would have thought the Dodgers would pick themselves up and come back in Game 2. But Game 2 started with a 3-run 1st for the D'backs and the Dodgers didn't get on the board until the 4th inning, scoring 1 run.
In each game, Arizona struck first with a big inning. The Dodgers were always playing from behind in the series.
Kershaw has been touched up before in the playoffs, but the only worse outing than his game one of any pitcher in memory is the Ankiel game where he lost his marbles and could not find the plate and had to stop pitching. Kershaw gave up 6 runs on 6 hits and got just one out! That is absolutely incredible

Just arrived (9:23MST). Cold and rainy. SLC airport is nice. They even had a Lego store, which my son loved. Weather should improve nicely by kickoff.
Beautiful scenery. The “Panorama lands” have roadside viewpoints off of I-70 that would be national parks on the east coast.

our normal destination is Sugarbush. it says 5 hours, but ends up closer to 6, especially if there are any weather issues.

Dodgers lose, out of the playoffs. i watched the last few innings as they struggled to mount any sort of rally after being down 4-0.
The 4-run inning was WILD. And I was watching the Spanish-language broadcast on MLBNetwork, which made it even more entertaining.
The normal overly trigger happy Dave Roberts instead leaves his starter in homer after homer, and it was the only time in MLB history where any team hit 4 homers in an inning, much less all off the same batting practice pitcher.
It was glorious to watch.
I had no rooting interest, but just as a baseball fan I really like watching Corbin Carroll. So talented and so aggressive on the bases. Love it!
In the other NL series, I have kind of come around on Harper - he is a real gamer and I love the post dinger staredowns. We need more of that, is good for the game! Phils-DBacks would be a really fun NLCS

Arizona nearly handed the game back in the top of the 7th. Or rather, Ryan Thompson did.
Thompson got the last out of the 6th on the 1st batter he faced, and the first two outs of the 7th on the 2nd and 3rd batters he faced; 3 up, 3 down. With 2 away in the 7th, Thompson gave up 4 consecutive singles allowing 2 runs to score with the tying run on base. That's when Thompson was pulled.
Fortunately for the D'backs, Andrew Saalfrank came in and induced a ground ball to third for the 3rd out.
ugh. Hard to win when your top 4 hitters basically get 1 hit each. Will Smith was the only hitter that hit well. And the starters were hit hard. With all the injuries to the starting pitchers, it wasn't unexpected. The bullpen was lights out though.
When LAD got a guy on base in the 8th down 4-2 with Betts and Freeman coming up, it looked like something might happen there, but they went down lamely in succession. Basically the story of the series there.
I do wonder if that absolutely cataclysmic first inning by Kershaw in game one just got in their heads and psyched them all out. They were all pressing and anxious looking the whole time
I also wondered if Kershaw's 1st inning implosion in Game 1 had the psychological effect you pointed out. Thing is, Kershaw has these flailing outings from time to time. A team can't let it sour everything.
I would have thought the Dodgers would pick themselves up and come back in Game 2. But Game 2 started with a 3-run 1st for the D'backs and the Dodgers didn't get on the board until the 4th inning, scoring 1 run.
In each game, Arizona struck first with a big inning. The Dodgers were always playing from behind in the series.
Kershaw has been touched up before in the playoffs, but the only worse outing than his game one of any pitcher in memory is the Ankiel game where he lost his marbles and could not find the plate and had to stop pitching. Kershaw gave up 6 runs on 6 hits and got just one out! That is absolutely incredible
Agree though that a really good team would just flush that game and bounce back
As I bring my eyes down to the penultimate choice, that polling list makes me want to do a u-turn. Nausea inducing.
