The boston tea party wasn't about protesting the taxes on tea directly. The Townshend Act worked as a bailout for the British East India Company which had tons of tea which was going unsold, so it allowed BEI to dump the tea in the colonies.
The Tea Act, passed by Parliament on May 10, 1773, granted the British East India Company Tea a monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies. This was what ultimately compelled a group of Sons of Liberty members on the night of December 16, 1773 to disguise themselves as Mohawk Indians, board three ships moored in Boston Harbor, and destroy over 92,000 pounds of tea. The Tea Act was the final straw in a series of unpopular policies and taxes imposed by Britain on her American colonies. The policy ignited a “powder keg” of opposition and resentment among American colonists and was the catalyst of the Boston Tea Party. The passing of the Tea Act imposed no new taxes on the American colonies. The tax on tea had existed since the passing of the 1767 Townshend Revenue Act. Along with tea, the Townshend Revenue Act also taxed glass, lead, oil, paint, and paper. Due to boycotts and protests, the Townshend Revenue Act’s taxes were repealed on all commodities except tea in 1770. The tea tax was kept in order to maintain Parliament’s right to tax the colonies. The Tea Act was not intended to anger American colonists, instead it was meant to be a bailout policy to get the British East India Company out of debt. The British East India Company was suffering from massive amounts of debts incurred primarily from annual contractual payments due to the British government totaling £400,000 per year. Additionally, the British East India Company was suffering financially as a result of unstable political and economic issues in India, and European markets were weak due to debts from the French and Indian War among other things. Besides the tax on tea which had been in place since 1767, what fundamentally angered the American colonists about the Tea Act was the British East India Company’s government sanctioned monopoly on tea.
Jeannette Rankin, the first woman in congress, was one of 50 house members to vote against the US declaration of war during WWI. She subsequently lost her re-election bid. Finally sent back to Congress in 1940, she was the only congressperson to vote against the declaration of war in December 1941. She again lost her re-election bid. Ms. Rankin was a lifelong pacifist.
Ok, ok you making fun of me, that's ok - BUT in this historical thought for the period I read an interesting book about Wilson, late 1916 could have stopped the war, if he had better advisors (back then like a total of 12) - and the guy who was helping him wasn't that good.
You'd have to read the book (really) but after the war of 1916 nobody was winning (in the West war), and the Germans were ready to stop the war - and also not exactly the starter really.
So there was some talk for this, but Wilson really couldn't figure it out (but thinking it would be a good move), and this guy wasn't smart enough, and then the Germans thought they'd get enough forces with the Russian collapses to win it in 1917 because we weren't really doing much.
I took a squash class at Cal in the 70s. Back then the PE classes were classified as mostly men, mostly women, or both. I think this was a pretty new concept at the time. We had a small coed class, women had short hair, and the instructor, probably following years of habit, had us meet in the mens locker room....I enjoyed a couple of good classes, but then sprained my ankle running down the hill toward class. No more squash, limped to classes for the rest of the term.

Oxymoron. Runs are not fun. I either have fun NOT running or have the self-satisfaction/endorphin rush after completing a race, but I have never had fun.
A race may not be fun, but a run can be fun. Did a 10k in a halloween costume that was quite fun. Wasn't going for time of course. Lot of fun people to see along the way.
I think if you have trained your brain to be used to that endorphin rush it is sort of fun, or at least a release.
Fun fact: a fairly high proportion of ultra marathoners are recovered drug addicts, with the rush from the run being kind of a replacement for their former vice
I don't get the impression that there will be any costume wearing in this house, but you never know when the 17 year old's friends might decide to embrace their inner children. (The irony in that phrase being that they still kind of look like children to me)
Yep, in our neighborhood one of the perks of walking around with the kids is that usually 2-3 houses will have treats for the adults: jello shots or those little plastic bottles of fireball. Makes for a fun evening.
We get almost no kids at the front door at all, most years. Occasionally there will be a surge, but it's not unusual to get a cluster of little kids early and then nothing.
Well for decades we never got any kids where we lived, huge building in tough neighborhood - long ago, very occasionally kids from inside the 100,000+ sf building.
But now we bought a house that I have heard is very popular for this, and my crazy wife was saying she wouldn't "hand out" candy, just set a huge container with candy outside, and turn off the outside light when it was all gone! Insane!
'Cuz that sounds like our Halloweens for a long time. Mrs Slug has a definitely Bah! Humbug! approach since little kids generally don't come around and the teens who do have been vandals.
I also enjoy handing out the candy. When I lived on the Peninsula there were very few, it seemed like everybody was driving down the next street to Willie Mays' house, where hundreds of kids showed up to get a free baseball. In the Berkeley Hills also it was mostly just a few kids. I stopped buying fun-sized bags of candy years ago and switched to full size Hershey's, Reeses' PB cups and so on.

Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by Brennan’s.
The Bears’ first-ever game against Colorado was the home opener in 1968. Cal’s Bear Minimum defense shut out the Buffaloes, 10-0. The teams combined for l7 punts and the Bears held Colorado to under 300 yards of total offense while forcing four turnovers. Cal wide receiver Wayne Stewart (who at 6’7” doubled as member of the basketball team) set a then Cal record with 144 receiving yards. The Bears would go on to their best season since the ’58 Rose Bowl campaign, finishing 7-3-1 and at one point attainting a number eight ranking in the nation.
Cal trivia fun fact appears on DBD every Tuesday and Thursday during the football season.
you haven't watched Colorado. 2nd worst offense in the nation. Worst defense in the nation (including giving up 6.7 yards per rush, Jaydn Ott is salivating). Outscored 43-11 on average. -14 makes sense and if Cal doesn't win by 30+, Wilcox should set himself on fire
I liked Chris' Conclusion: " Wilcox is content with his 24-3 lead, and decides to let a different running back rack up yards as he saves Ott for Washington (as he lets Colorado come back and make it 24-17 for some reason). "

342 chests of tea were thrown overboard at the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773.
i heard people were throwing Dunkin Donuts into the river in Boston to protest the new price changes

Butternut. Serve baked with brown sugar.
The local farmer's market sells honey nut squash, which is a smaller slightly sweeter version of a butternut.
sort of like Honey Nut Cheerios are a sweeter version of Cheerios

Fun Run
we used to have a neighborhood Chicken Trot in early Nov a few weekends before Thxgiving.
there was a 1/4 mile kids fun run around the block.
there was a 3 mile run for adults.
you could lower your overall time after the race by 2 min
- drinking a shot of whiskey
- chugging a beer
- or both
(sadly) the guy who won would win outright and w/ the adjustments. afterwards there was bbq and booze and much merriment in the streets.
i generally would not run, but be one of the people helping run the event.
Bay to Breakers.
only ran it once during our senior year at Cal. but that is one heck of a party ...
i love that at the finish line there is a separate exit for people participating the costume contest.
Oxymoron. Runs are not fun. I either have fun NOT running or have the self-satisfaction/endorphin rush after completing a race, but I have never had fun.

I find running to be boring. Unless it's trail running...but if I'm out on a trail I'd much rather be on my bike than on my feet.
Hood to Coast was SUPER fun.
Eh, as a kid - several, but yeah, not so much as an adult.
I think if you have trained your brain to be used to that endorphin rush it is sort of fun, or at least a release.

we are in the same boat w/ 15 yr HS sophomore.
i particularly enjoy staying home and handing out candy to the little kids that roan around the neighborhood.
Luckily we live in a trick or treat friendly neighborhood. We usually expect to get about 100 kids under 10.
Walking around is fun too. There are plenty of adult treats and the occasional person grilling hot dogs.
Mostly drunk parents walking around..

What could possibly go wrong? (You might want to stock up on product for your pressure washer when you go to clean up the "tricks" the next day.)
Nothing, well over with all candy gone in a couple of minutes.
Haven't had a trick or treater in years. Kind of sad.
Thanks Obama and Biden!

White tops, gold pants vs. Colorado
https://twitter.com/CalFootball/status/1580588856444796928
My least favorite combo
Gold tops, white pants is worse.
Personally, I like gold pants on the road. Kind of makes the team look a bit faster.
That's true. I agree I hate gold on white more. It just doesn't look good.
White on gold is clean.
Gold on blue is the best.
Exactly. Our colors are blue and gold. Sure we have to wear white tops but the pants should be blue with gold trim.
That means a win, I guess. Didn't Cal wear white jerseys, gold pants in the Citrus Bowl?
It was basically the road uniform for the 1991 season (and generally the Snyder Era?).

I just saw the line as posted by ESPN. Cal -14.5 as of this post. Even against Colorado, that seems big.

If this game is within 10 points at halftime something is very wrong.
If Wilcox loses this game, he and Musgrave need to be tarmac’d in Boulder.
That might actually be a good thing for Cal. Maybe in the long run.
Yep. Beat the Buffs! I feel better about the game after reading Christopher's write-up, and logic seemingly would dictate a Cal win. But who knows.
If Cal can't score 30 on them then they should leave Musgrave on the tarmac at DIA
If we are held to under 30 Musgrave needs to be fired, even if we win.
