Frenemy

ACC teams other than Dook, FSU, Clemson, Miami. Most of the ACC voted to give us a lifeline so respect.

And begrudgingly, Furd is closer to being a Frenemy than an enemy. We'd be in the Pac-3 if they just bailed and left us.

Expand full comment

Never. They are always have been and always will be an arch rival and thus an enemy. Do people really think that Furd was being totally altruistic in helping us get to into the ACC? Nonsense, they need us and the rivalry. I've no time for this softening on Furd hatred. It degrades the stupidity that is sports hatred.

"the stupidity that is sports hatred" Seems to be a lot of that counterproductively going around these days.

Even Duke and Miami always seemed to be on the side of inviting us, so it's hard to hate them THAT much. UNC voted against, but that seemed to be more about political pressure from their board than the chancellor not wanting us (reports from the Cal insiders was that they were a yes until some last minute shenanigans). Clemson was a hard no, but from what I can tell their fan base has been mostly cordial about it.

So it's pretty easily FSU that is the most hateable.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts.

Johnny Olszewski (aka Johnny O) is one of the greatest running back running backs in Golden Bear history. He was a first team All American in his senior year (1952). He ran for over a 1,000 yards as a sophomore and finished his career with 2,504 yards rushing, was the fourth overall pick of the 1953 NFL draft and spent nine seasons in the NFL and one in the old AFL. However his is a story of what might have been. In a big clash versus U$C on October 26,1951 the then junior RB was a victim of dirty play by the hated Trojans. In full view of the California rooting section, an opposing linebacker twisted Johnny O’s knee after he was tackled and prone on the ground. The resulting injury effectively knocked Olszewski out of the game as he only managed one more carry before limping off. Bear fans, coaches, players and administrators were outraged at the poor sportsmanship (a hall mark of U$C athletics). Glenn Seaborg even wrote about the dastardly deed in his book Roses From the Ashes decades later. As good as Johnny O was for the rest of his career (he missed several games in the immediate aftermath of the injury) it was said that he never had the same explosiveness that had typified his pre-injury running style.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season. This feature is brought to you by a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

And some thought egregious no-calls adversely affecting Cal were a relatively new thing. Even in those days it should have been a personal foul. There are plenty of accounts where PCC officiating set the standard for later Pac-8/10/12 calls of debatable quality. Probably had to see it to decide on ejection (probably not replayed on Sports Center that night!).

Yesterday evening, Trump held a town hall event in Oaks, PA (outside Philadelphia). Conditions inside the event venue were so hot that people were fainting. This prompted a question from the candidate - "Would anybody else like to faint? Let's not do anymore questions. Let's just listen to music. Let's make it into a music. Who the hell wants to hear questions, right?"

I'll let the Washington Post described what happened next.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/10/14/trump-music-sways-town-hall/

"For 39 minutes, Trump swayed, bopped — sometimes stopping to speak — as he turned the event into almost a living-room listening session of his favorite songs from his self-curated rally playlist.

He played nine tracks. He danced. He shook hands with people onstage. He pointed to the crowd. Noem stood beside him, nodding with her hands clasped. Trump stayed in place onstage, slowly moving back and forth. He was done answering questions for the night."

The New York Times was decidedly more kids gloves in reporting the moment, describing Trump as a candidate known for "improvisational departures", making a "detour".

COMMENT: I don't know who I'm more angry with and disappointed in - WaPo or the Times. The man's stoned or in a full-blown episode of cognitive decline in front of hundreds of people. Say it as if the republic depends upon truthful reporting.

This is a deranged position brought on by deranged circumstances.

Single issue voters typically undercut their position by failing to see that they are not an island unto themselves. Even if their issue is paramount to them and no one else, they need others to help them achieve that goal. Electoral politics is not the place in which to make unwieldy demands.

EDIT: it's even more deranged when you realize that AAPAC has effectively cut itself off from *anyone* who can carry influence in advancing towards their goals. The Squad is not enough, and will have limited influence in the 119th Congress, especially if that Congress is majority GOP.

[NC State Hate Week]: UNC is by far and away the best public academic program in North Carolina, but it does not have the full suite of engineering. So NC State has the state's preeminent engineering programs. Also, NC State - despite being in an urban area - is the home to the state's best agriculture and vet programs. NC State has a full offering of liberal arts majors - but kids gravitate toward Business Administration - so NC State has a giant BA department with nearly one in six students having that major. One in three is an engineer or biomed. One in 12 is agriculture. Outside of the hard sciences, it is not easy but not hard to get into NC State (40% total acceptance rate). NC State is a weird mix of nerds, hayseeds, and completely average kids. NC State is a big school, but it is the distant third to Duke & UNC in terms of sports awareness in the state. So they have this weird quiet fandom that only explodes on the scene when they are good, which is rare.

I thought the 10 second run-off was only for offensive penalties. Doesn't make sense to penalize the offense for defensive penalties.

Expand full comment

The 10-second run off is *supposed* to be an antidote for a team trying to preserve time by committing a penalty, which was the old timing rule.

Therefore, a 10-second runoff could be invoked by the officials on either a defensive or an offensive penalty. But I don't think the rule is knowing in its application, if you get my drift. See the Oregon vs. Ohio State game as evidence of that idea.
