Favorite shoe brand

heyalumnigo's avatar

Nike. Always thought they had the most comfortable shoes. I would basically only buy hightops and trainers. On the advice of No 1, I bought a pair of Adidas Ultraboost 4. They are super comfortable.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

outdoorsy stuff - Salomon

dress up - John Fluevog

i have only one pair of shoes/boots by them but they are great. it seemed absurd at the time to pay as much as i did for them.

it has their iconic Angel soles that have angels on the bottom and say this ..

These Angelic soles resist alkali, water, acid, fatigue and Satan

Justbear's avatar

Nike, especially the Flyknit running shoes which is just a thin piece of fabric and a sole

Wiata78's avatar

I was intrigued to see that all the top Olympic marathon runners were wearing Nike Alphafly or Vaporfly.

dcblue's avatar

I was talking to a running acquaintance recently and he said he'd paid $275 apiece for a couple pairs of Flyknit shoes. I still run 45-50 miles a week but don't race anymore so can't see paying that much far shoes. Not that I would have paid that much even when I did race.

Terence's avatar

I think it makes sense if you're really tryin to PB or competing in races - my friend cut 3 minutes off his half marathon time.

dcblue's avatar

Unfortunately I'm about thirty years past my PBs. Maybe if I ever get serious about age group competing, but that seems unlikely.

Just bought my first pair of Skechers sneakers and I love them! Very, very light shoes and really comfortable.

MoriBear's avatar

I got a couple of pairs of these last year (+ 1 Covid year = two years ago).

https://vessi.com

Haven't worn them much the last year (my slip-on elasto-strap sketchers have been primary), but with the rain hitting the Bay this week, will be wearing the Vessi more.

What is your second favorite dinosaur?

SGBear's avatar

Utahraptor, which is a cousin to the Velociraptor. Velociraptors are actually the size of a medium turkey, including feathers. Utahraptors - like all "dromaeosaurs" were feathered but had too small of a chest muscle to actively fly. They likely used strong legs to climb/run/leap and its feathers to redirect/pounce on prey from above, which would have been terrifying for something bigger than a Clydesdale horse that had a scythe toe, kitchen knives for fingers, and a giant mouth full of carnivore's teeth.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Pachycephalosaurus - The headbutting dino.

SGBear's avatar

A UC Berkeley paleontologist had the distinction of UNdiscovering two different pachycephalosaurs.

Saw a talk a while back from paleontologist Jack Horner who criticizes a lot of egotistical people in his field for claiming juvenile dinos are different species

Terius Gray should be the authority on that, being the Juvenile and having a birth name that sounds dinosaur-like.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

stegosaurus.

somehow those battle scenes between a t-rex and the stegosaurus always intrigued me. it seemed that with the spikey tail and the full body armor it was well poised to defend itself.

sycasey's avatar

Technically a T-Rex and a Stegosaurus couldn't have met each other. T-Rex lived in the Cretaceous period, Stego in the Jurassic. (But there were other large T-Rex like predators that Stegosaurus could have faced.)

Wiata78's avatar

Plus, they could meet at Jurassic Park.

goldenone's avatar

Anklyosaurus - cool spiked club on the end of its tail...

Justbear's avatar

I don't even have a number one favorite dinosaur.

sycasey's avatar

Deinonychus -- that's what the Raptors shown in the Jurassic Park movies actually were. Super scary, intelligent hunters.

Cugel's avatar

What an odd question

MoriBear's avatar

yeah, I *think* I've seen a lot of "favorite" dinosaur answers. 2nd fave is tough.

For my 6-yo daughter, pachycephhlosaurus seems to be #1 these days, to triceratops I guess is #2.

this is too much of a stretch, man

heyalumnigo's avatar

Just because you were able to see the dinosaurs that all of us have been told stories about doesn't mean it's a stretch...

GoldenSD81's avatar

My kids have been watching a lot of Dinosaur Train on PBS kids lately. Based on the the dinosaurs I’ve seen on the show, I’m going with the Stegosaurus.

MoriBear's avatar

Not sure their ages, but do they watch Dino Dana? (there's also a Dino Dan, but haven't seen that)

GoldenSD81's avatar

They are 3 and 1. Haven’t watched Dino Dana or Dino Dan.

My 3 year old likes it for the dinosaurs and my 1 year old likes it for the train.

MoriBear's avatar

I think my (just) 6-yo watched Dana for the first time a year or two ago. (I think pre-covid, which would be ~2 yrs). so maybe your 3-yo might be into it?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

our most recent encounter was on a hike to Mt Washington, notorious for the "worlds worst weather"

as we were descending from the summit down to the Lake of the Clouds Hut (only about 1.5 mi) we go caught in a rain/lighting/hail storm.

luckily the lightning was not right on top of us and while it looked and sounded a little scary, we were in no immediate danger.

we were appropriately soaked when we go to the hut except for backpacks and upper body.

SGBear's avatar

Lightning has twice hit a tree when I was across the road from it. It is so loud and violent that I nearly jumped out of my skin. The trees exploded... One was about 60 feet tall, fell across the street, and hit the rain awning of the driveway rather than smooshing the stunned delivery driver who stood there dumbfounded, amongst giant branches all around him, with his lunch packet in his hand and a mouth full of half chewed food. He couldn't believe that a concrete ledge saved his life.

Terence's avatar

I had an event that hosted George Karl (the NBA basketball coach) in Hong Kong and he went to play golf on his day off and was affected by lightning (it hit NEAR him and he got pretty shocked)

Cugel's avatar

Nobody in my family (besides me) really wants to go back in a theater.

Fire Starkey's avatar

why? The experience is soooooooooooooooo much better, especially for certain films like this one. The visuals will be overwhelming at an IMAX

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 1 got No 3 and me to watch Green Knight in the Rheem Theater. I knew nothing of the movie. Was interesting.

I didn't end up watching Furious 9 in the theater. The next movie I'm for sure going to watch in the theater is Top Gun 2. Probably IMAX. Don't really have a desire to watch anything else in the theater right now.

Cugel's avatar

Don't argue with me! I agree - them: people talking, can't pause and go to the bathroom blah, blah, blah...

heyalumnigo's avatar

Does the rest of the family not want to go back in the theater because of Covid, or they're just happy watching movies at home?

SGBear's avatar

Succotash a la SG Bear. I've done perhaps a 100 different versions of it. It starts with fresh mirepoix or sofrito in a big ass pan. Fry a small amount of a diced fatty meat source - sausage, bacon, fat from carnitas, or something like that. Add a combination of frozen vegetables - but always include corn and some sort of legume. Then you can add any spice you want - go caribbean spice, cajun, some sort of Asian, west African, Greek... doesn't matter - but stick to a theme. Moisten with a half of cup of stock - doesn't matter what type - and a tablespoon of tomato paste. Super flexible, fast, cheap, easy, and relatively healthy as an alternative to always having the same veggies for dinner over and over.

beyond burgers on the grill

not that exciting as good food goes, but was pretty decent. made regular burgers on the BGE for the kids.

trying not to eat land meats for 6 months to see if my cholesterol gets to acceptable levels.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

also had

- Trader Joe's no-meat sausages >> just ok, not good. going to have to try some alternate incarnations.

- some vegan mozzarella cheese >> disaster

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 1 says the Beyond Burger meatballs and sausages are really good.

I do like the Beyond Burger burgers. I've made them at home.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

will check those out. decent meatballs and sausages would be good because w/ tomato sauce and pasta is a staple food around here

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I learned yesterday that IKEA sells veggie balls. I haven't tried them, but if you do, please report back!

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

we had those IKEA ones. not that great. tastes like mush.

stick w/ the Swedish meatballs and lingonberry jam.

MoriBear's avatar

I've had them a few times...they're "fine". but not having had the meatballs, I can't compare.

MoriBear's avatar

I like the BB breakfast patties.

vegan cheese: I've never had anything that wasn't disgusting.

Terence's avatar

Beyond isn't really healthier . . .it's just better for the environment (which is still a reason to eat it)

MoriBear's avatar

I'd say it's probably still healthier than cow – on aggregate, since not everyone on the planet can eat grain fed over pasture cow – but there's a lot of "stuff" in there. a garden burger is likely healthier, altho less burger-y

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I like that approach, HSB...I'm gonna follow your lead & try to cut the land meats too.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

still been having eggs and fish.

switched for non-dairy things like almond and oat milk.

not having cheese is the hardest. not having a morning pastry w/ coffee is not great, but manageable.

MoriBear's avatar

if everyone does that, then I'll have to spend more time in the Test Kitchen thread!

MoriBear's avatar

as a long-time veggie, BB is a good grill alternative. and impossible burgers at restaurants. sometimes they feel a bit too meat-like.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I need to get some impossible burgers so I can do a taste test. Which do you think make better burgers? I buy BB at Costco and have seen they have 1 lb chunks of Impossible meat.

MoriBear's avatar

tbh, I don't really know. I've not done an A-B. Usually it's IB at restaurants and BB at home. the downside of BB is that after frying in a pan, the house has a kinda rank meat-y smell.

they are greasier than something like a garden burger, but they are more "real" tasting (and feeling and looking).

if you do the A-B, I'd be interested in hearing the results.

Roasted brussel sprouts with gruyere cheese, bacon and shallots in a white sauce or roux, accompanied by garlic artichoke sausages...

Fire Starkey's avatar

i am a proponent of chopped up Brussel sprout leaves that are lightly fried and mixed with pecorino cheese and golden raisins. Shit is life changing, yo

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Growing up, brussels were the devil...Ma and Nana would just boil the hell out of them.

Now, I f-ing love them roasted with oil and bacon...

How the hell did the previous generations F that up so?

WilderThanGene's avatar

Browning (caramelizing) veggies pretty much makes them candy. I like to remind friends of this when they think they're eating healthy.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I blame it on the Great Depression and WWII rationing. Food and ingredients were scarce due to unemployment and then the war effort. People didn’t have access to a bunch of ingredients so they did the best they could, which often meant boiling.

Terence's avatar

"Food is a lot better now. . . back then we boiled everything" - Steve Rogers

Cugel's avatar

They genetically not the same:

Brussels sprouts are a cultivar group of the same species as broccoli, cabbage, collard greens, kale, and kohlrabi; they are cruciferous (they belong to the family Brassicaceae; old name Cruciferae). Many cultivars are available; some are purple in color, such as 'Ruby Crunch' or 'Red Bull'.[4] The purple varieties are hybrids between purple cabbage and regular green Brussels sprouts developed by a Dutch botanist in the 1940s, yielding a variety with some of the red cabbage's purple colors and greater sweetness.[5] In the 1990s, Dutch scientist Hans van Doorn identified the chemicals that make Brussels sprouts bitter. This enabled Dutch seed companies to cross-breed archived low-bitterness varieties with modern high-yield varieties, over time producing a significant increase in the popularity of the vegetable.[6]

Cugel's avatar

Heh, I wonder if all those idiots who are concerned by GMOs realize that why they are so tasty now is because they've been genetically modified.

Cugel's avatar

Uh... all the brussel sprouts we eat now are a completely different variety than in the past, I think from some time in the 80's

Colin Powell, Who Shaped U.S. National Security, Dies at 84

A former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, secretary of state and national security adviser, Mr. Powell died on Monday of complications of Covid-19, his family said.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

my wife said the she heard/saw him live at a Pfizer zoom thing just a few weeks ago and he was alive and well and had big plans for inspiring underprivileged black kids.

They said on CNN that he was also suffering from a form of cancer that affects the immune system (sorry, I can't give you the name) that, combined with the cancer therapy itself, virtually destroyed his immune system.

Notwithstanding the intelligence failure in Iraq, I always admired him as being a person that any child could look up to. Hard-working, intelligent, patriotic (as in he really loved his country, not the kind of toxic "patriotism" that extremists like to spew), and just a relatable human being.

Dodgers’ win-now gambit doesn’t win Game 2, might have consequences later

https://www.truebluela.com/2021/10/17/22731621/dodgers-moves-backfired-julio-urias-max-scherzer-nlcs-game-2

The Dodgers pushed in all their chips in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, and it blew up in their face. The Braves walked off Los Angeles in the ninth inning for a second straight night, this time a 5-4 comeback win that put Atlanta up 2-0 in the NLCS for a second straight year.

Eddie Rosario delivered the game-winning single on Sunday, a rocket off a shifted Corey Seager’s glove that scored Dansby Swanson, but the train was careening off the track an inning earlier.

“You can’t be afraid to fail,” manager Dave Roberts said before Game 2. “Careful doesn’t play in the postseason.”

heyalumnigo's avatar

The first game where Dave Roberts has had some questionable moves. I'm not sure I would've brought in Urías this year.

Also the TBS announcers have been pretty bad all offseason. Some of their analysis has just been plain wrong.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Like saying Urías isn't used to pitching in relief this season unlike last season. Which was wrong. He started all last season until the playoffs where he had 2-3 relief appearances.

On the last play the QB pulled a Riley...Too Soon?

FiatSlug's avatar

That was 14 years ago. Not too soon.

heyalumnigo's avatar

But we could've been No 1!!

FiatSlug's avatar

You got a time machine, perhaps?

FiatSlug's avatar

Disagree.

The problem is that the camera angle in the clip means that the ball is covered by the receiver's back as he goes down to the ground. It's close, to be sure, but I think a case can be made that the spot should have been short of the line to gain.

g.oso's avatar

Terence's avatar

I honestly was heartened by the game this weekend. I mean the way we lost was absolutely crushing, but I saw some life out of the team which I didn't vs. WSU.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Year 5 and the bright spot for the season and an argument to keep Wilcox another year is “we were 3 yards away from taking Oregon for OT”.

Wiata78's avatar

Wouldn't go that far. What it will do is get me to watch the next game.

Terence's avatar

Where did I write that?

GoldenSD81's avatar

Sorry, not so much directed at you and more just old man yelling at cloud type moment.

Terence's avatar

I am amiable to one more year of Wilcox, but I always tend to be a give 'em more rope kind of guy.

Fire Starkey's avatar

what is sad is that if the team was better coached and made 1-3 more "plays" per game, they could be 5-1. Only WSU was the true turd of the season. They have been in all the other ones

Tangtpt's avatar

It can't be lost that we were 2 yards away from tying the game in the 4th quarter AT AUTZEN.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I can't wait to see the ratings for this week's game.

GoldenSD81's avatar

It can’t be lost that we are now 1-5 in year 5 with Wilcox. That’s what can’t be lost by fans and the AD.

IMO our playcalling doesn't help. Not much misdirection in those sequences.

Fire Starkey's avatar

well, the ole by the oline on that blitz was pretty brutal

sycasey's avatar

Player performance always an issue too, but I thought that blitz was pretty predictable and we called a play that required the O-line to hold up against it for any chance of success. Not great.

Yep. I have expounded on this in Nick's write-up above.
