Matsutake mushrooms

i bought and broiled 1 (one) of them this weekend. a decent sized one was about $16 at our local Japanese market so i figured i'd just get one to see what it was all about.

i lightly marinated the sliced pieces w/ soy and mirin and then broiled them for 5 min.

nothing mind-blowing, but it had a nice earthy taste. i didn't find it to have an unpleasant smell which is how the internet describes it.

I haven't been on DBD for a while, so things that I have enjoyed in the past month plus.

Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) - This show just strikes the right tone with me, even if last week's episode was arguably a bit too meta.

Leverage: Redemption (IMDB TV) - The 2nd half of the revival dropped this past weekend with 8 more episodes.

Thanks to Reddit and how a lot of current UK shows are posted there.

Fever Pitch - The Rise of the Premier League (BBC) - This documentary is kind of like The Last Dance (down to how one of the stars' production company arguably gave him too much power with David Beckham in the role of Michael Jordan) with stars rewatching some old footages and reacting now, but I don't know the 90's Premier League history as well as the Chicago Bulls. I don't know if this makes me appreciate Manchester United more or hate them more?

The Mating Game (BBC) - A new David Attenborough documentary. Only 2 out of 5 episodes are out, but I particularly enjoyed watching the two penis-fencing flatworms. That except is also available on YouTube for all US audiences.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czOIoDbkKQc

I did feel slightly bad about my own personal failures in the mating department though.

Can't wait to watch the rest of the Leverage: Redemption episodes. I watched episode 9 with Lavar Burton. Really enjoyed it. I thought maybe they would bring back Chaos. They had a couple of TNG jokes.

I also thought you meant Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore.

the "colon cancer in the liver with no symptoms" was what happened to my father. He at least was able to take a shot at chemo (and was 80). That's a dreadful story - and, not to put to fine a point on it, cancer-driven liver failure is a pretty shit way to go (not that there are many good ones)

Doesn't federal law supersede state law when they're in conflict? So in reality this could only apply to companies of fewer than 100 employees who are not federal contractors?

It does, but this gives Texans bent on disregarding the law an avenue for plausible deniability when legal ramifications come calling; they will claim they believed Texas law over-rules all else.

We talk about Tom Holmoe's 2001 1-10 team as being the worst in Cal history. So let's talk about UCLA's worst season. UCLA's worst season is arguably NOT 1919 because they won 2 games, but it does stand out for several reasons:

1. Their only wins were against a freshman-only squad and a JC - teams to which they lost later in the season

2. They got shut out by a battleship 20-0. The USS Idaho, specifically.

3. They lost three straight games to high schools

4. In an era when scores were routinely 0-0 ties, one of those losses to a high school was 74-0.

Los Angeles Dodgers' Walker Buehler to start Game 4 of NLDS on short rest

seems like a bad idea ...

Expand full comment

That's what I think. If it yields a Game 4 win for the Dodgers, the risk will be mitigated as long as Urias gets his 4 days rest. Somewhere I read that Gonsolin and Urias could be tapped tonight if Buehler gets in trouble.

If this becomes an all hands on deck moment for LA, it could force a bullpen game for Game 5.

Expand full comment

At this point it's a must win so everyone is available. They really don't have a choice. I think if the Dodgers would've won last night you'd see Webb pitching tonight.

Expand full comment

Worry about Thurs later.

Expand full comment

Yeah things may not go so well. But, the bullpen is rested. The top 4 have barely pitched over the last 5 or 6 days. So if he can go 5, then turn it over. I haven't looked to see who the Giants pitch but it could be a bullpen game. Without any runs, it doesn't matter what the pitchers do.

Expand full comment

Giants are pitching DeSclafini.

Expand full comment

I'm assuming they'll have a very short leash on him an be ready to go to Gonsolin or Price if he gets lit up early. And that does leave them with Urias to pitch on basically normal rest in Game 5 (with the two off days) if they get there.

Giants are starting DeSclafani, probably also with a short leash.

I'm guessing he will be on a short leash. On the bright side, the Dodgers have hit DeScalfani this year.

When I tuned in and noticed the wind whipping the American flag and the Dodgers' 2020 World Series pennant I had a flashback to Candlestick Park. And the batters would also squint if only to keep the dirt and dust out of their eyes.
