More evidence that the GOP conference is fatally divided. Trump called Emmer a RINO. Emmer couldn't get the votes neecessary to become Speaker from withing the GOP conference. Apparently, Emmer saw the handwriting on the wall.
When will the so-called "moderates" in the GOP decide that enough is enough?
The couple that bought the unit above mine last year are in Indiana. He's a professor and interim dean of the international studies school. She's the director of the Asian Cultural Center on campus. They're here during school breaks but mostly still there. I think retirements are expected in the next couple years and more time here.

i could have probably avoided coming to Bloomington my last year since i was mostly just writing my thesis, except that i played basketball for a couple hours at lunchtime every day. i am sure that contributed to at least an extra year of grad school, but i didnt mind.
that final year in Indi was the first year after being married and my wife was doing her internship year right after med school.
where i first moved there in '92 everyone called it Indi-a-no-place since there was very little to do in Indi. but over the years they revitalized the downtown area, the Pacers and Reggie Miller were really good and the Colts were decent too. there started to a be nice vibe after a while with decent food and some places to go out.

Pilot from Pleasant Hill CA is arrested for 83 charges of attempted murder after trying to crash a plane in Portland by disabling the engines. WTF, man.
He was charged with 80 counts of attempted murder and 80 counts of passenger endangerment as well as another charge that sounded like sabotage (I can't recall the specific charge).
This pisses me off to no end. Dude had a $250MM roster and couldn't make the playoffs this year. How is this in any way an upgrade? Sorry, bud, you're getting a team with 1/3 the talent, now go get us to the NLDS at a minimum.
They're making a serious run at Yamamoto...maybe that helps lure Ohtani.

Leclerc drives me crazy. I wanted to see the end of the game before going to bed and he comes in with an eight-run lead and gives up a homer right away and walks people and goes to long counts. He gets the job done but doesn't seem like it's ever easy.
Bruce Bochy now has a shot to join Sparky Anderson and Tony LaRussa as the only managers in MLB history to win a World Series with teams in the AL and the NL.
Anderson won the World Series managing the Cincinnati Red (NL) in '75 and '76 and the Detroit Tigers (AL) in '84. In '84, the Tigers won their first 9 games and 35 of their first 40 games. The Tigers won 104 games that season and played the San Diego Padres in the World Series. A back-up catcher on that Padres team was one Bruce Bochy.
Tony LaRussa won the World Series managing the Oakland A's (AL) in '89 and the St. Louis Cardinals in '06 and '11.
The '89 World Series was a 4-game sweep against the Giants.
The '06 Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4 games to 1 in the World Series.
The '11 Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in the '11 World Series, 4 games to 3.
No. Dusty only has the one World Series win. He came close to having a World Series win in 2002 except for an injured Rob Nenn. Or put another way, yanking Russ Ortiz an inning too early.
They definitely got behind the eight ball when the first two drives ended in a red-zone fumble and a missed field goal. Should have had 6 to 10 points and had none.
The D is the big issue. In recent weeks, Minnesota's O has been held largely in check by Carolina and Chicago, yet torched the Niners. Did Javon Hargreave even get a mention from Buck? The DL was an utter non-factor. Cousins did arguably have the game of his life, making quick reads and fitting the ball in tight, tight windows. But O'Connell clearly saw something with the Niners D, as he schemed Vikings receivers open all night.
A puzzling effort from the D, when this team absolutely needed the D to win them a tough game on the road. Despite the INT, Moonie Ward killed them, with the flub v Addison at the end of the 1H proving decisive.
Mrs Slug says that Shanahan is "donezo" (pronounced DUN-zo). I have a hard time arguing against that notion since I have observed in the past that Shanahan's apparent ceiling is getting to the Super Bowl, but not winning it.
PREDICTION: if the 49ers win it all this year, Shanahan will be be extended. If not, he's donezo.
The last two losses are merely more evidence that Shanahan can't win a Super Bowl. Super Bowl teams shouldn't have big letdowns two weeks in a row to sub .500 teams. (CORRECTION: Cleveland was 2-2 before beating the 49ers in Week 6.)
This could be similar to the knock on Steve Young before the 49ers dispatched San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX. Difference being that a 49ers team quarterbacked by Young *did*, in fact, win a Super Bowl.
I'm doubting that a Shanahan coached 49ers squad can win a Super Bowl. This year's team may be the last best chance for a while.
1. The 2019 team was extremely close to winning the Super Bowl. Like, one missed deep throw from Jimmy G close. I don't see how this "proves" Shanahan can't win.
2. The 2021 team wasn't actually that good and it was impressive they even got to the NFC Championship Game. I actually chalk this up as a mark in Shanahan's favor that he got that team through two playoff games.
3. The 2022 team maybe WAS good enough, but all their quarterbacks got hurt in one playoff game. How is that the coach's fault?
1. The 49ers lost Super Bowl LIV by 11 points, 2 possessions. That's not "close". What's worse is that the 49ers had a 10 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter and couldn't hold the lead. They could barely get a few first downs, much less score in the critical 4th quarter when they gave up 21 *unanswered* points. Score a TD and prevent KC from scoring one of their three 4th quarter TDs and the 49ers win Super Bowl LIV. Didn't happen, though.
2. The 2021 team still did not win a Super Bowl. They had a shot at getting to Super Bowl LVI, but their defense dropped the ball (literally) at a critical point in the NFC Championship game.
3. Again, the 2022 49ers didn't win the Super Bowl. They didn't even get to the Super Bowl.
Kyle Shanahan cannot win the biggest game. And he has a track record of losing big leads. See Super Bowl LI and the biggest collapse in Super Bowl history. 31 *unanswered* points. Sound familiar?
There's a simple way to refute the hypothesis: a Kyle Shanahan-coached 49ers team wins a Super Bowl. Any Super Bowl.
I feel like it's a big assumption they're going to go for home/away balance. It's going to be an unbalanced schedule no matter what, why would they make their lives hard like that?
Get ready for trips to Syracuse and Boston College, and big nighttime/weeknight home games against Virginia and Wake Forest.
But it might still be better than the games that likey fill out OSU & WSU's independent schedules against UMass, New Mexico St, and Charlotte. Should be memorable.
One of my closest friends wife is an SMU grad and they live in Dallas. We're already discussing annual meetups and trips to CA for this game. Also means I likely have a SMU tailgate in
On this day in 1970 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 45-0. After a scoreless first quarter in which WSU twice entered the Cal red zone without scoring, the Bear offense exploded. A 44 yard TD pass from Dave Penhall to running back Bob Darby provided the second of two second quarter scores. Isaac Curtis had two second half TD runs and Darby added a second score to his ledger. The Bears racked up 23 first downs to 10 for the Cougars. The previous week the Bears had suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Bruins with the winning TD coming with four seconds remaining on a play in which UCLA QB Dennis Dummit had clearly stepped out of bounds but the Bears rebounded from that disappointment for the blow out win.
DBD celebrates 100 years of football in Strawberry Canyon with this daily feature appearing throughout the football season.
I remember that UCLA game rather vividly. I'm pretty sure it was the same drive in which Dummit also was stopped at least 1 yard short of the line to gain on 4th down, but was, nevertheless, awarded the first down by a game official. The cascade of boos stays with me in my memory.
Big Ten officiating has often been an exemplar of officiating. You'd think that both conferences who send a champion to the Rose Bowl could have not just competent officiating, but also excellent officiating.

Two losses in October? Yes, it is.

CAL
There's the Big Game. And now - there will be the annual SMU Game, which deserves a new name.

I feel like it's a big assumption they're going to go for home/away balance. It's going to be an unbalanced schedule no matter what, why would they make their lives hard like that?
So instead of playing the likes of U$C, UCLA, UW and Oregon every year we get an annual clash with the Mustangs. Sheesh.
Well, it's better than a Mountain West schedule.
I'd almost rather have an annual game with OSU and Wazzu. Fill out the schedule with Mountain West teams and Big XII teams.
Agreed.
One of my closest friends wife is an SMU grad and they live in Dallas. We're already discussing annual meetups and trips to CA for this game. Also means I likely have a SMU tailgate in
Where's the Sailgate in Dallas?
sounds like fun.
If true, Cal may play Notre Dame again
So you're saying the saga of Bus 2 lives...?
That sounded so focking miserable.
It is part of CGB lore
It's not like bad officiating is new to the conference.
Pac-8 & Pac-10 officiating definitely should have helped establish our expectations for Pac-12 officiation.
Big Ten officiating has often been an exemplar of officiating. You'd think that both conferences who send a champion to the Rose Bowl could have not just competent officiating, but also excellent officiating.
No. No, it's not. In a sense, that was my introduction to bad officiating.
