i am on-call monitoring the quantum computers all day for the first time. i am suppose to check for any alerts and notify someone. it is for training to be able to do overnight shifts eventually and actually be able to fix basic issues.

“Are they working?”

“Yes and no.”

that is pretty much actually the case. we seem to get a couple alerts every hour about something not being ideal. but then one of the system operators jumps in, fixes it, and we are back in operation again, mostly ...

Keep your eye on the W.O.P.R.

Ever since David Lightman started playing Global Thermonuclear War with Joshua, all hell’s breaking loose. McKittrick’s searching everywhere for answers, the General’s on the horn with the President…Def Con is volatile. It’s a mess.

After 5 incredibly average major league seasons, Kevin Ginkel figured something out and has been lights out all year…the trend continued in the playoffs. Yikes, domination in high leverage situations to bail out the rookie Saalfrank who inexcusably walked .238-hitting Christian Pache in his first AB in 2-weeks with a 2-run lead and Schwarber coming up.

D’backs are everything Farhan’s Giants are not…dynamic, fun, exciting, athletic, and quick. They play fundamental baseball, they defend, they execute.

The baseball held my interest more than the Warriors. Watched the end of the game, checked the Dubs score, and then off to bed.

The Warriors will regret not trading Kuminga.

Expand full comment

Maybe, but it seems inevitable that they will fall off a Cliff soon due to age and have press restart. I don’t think there are any moves they can make to avoid that

They're turning into the Sharks. Giving large contracts to their aging vets that they can't get out of and it will hamper signing young players. The difference is that the Sharks had 7-8 year contracts and the Warriors will be 4 years. The contracts will age poorly and it'll be hard to get out from them.

Oh absolutely. I’m not saying they shouldn’t attempt to develop the young guys…just that I’m not sold on Kuminga’s chops.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

Mike Johnson (R-LA) has been elected Speaker, 220-209. There were no votes for anyone other than Johnson or Jeffries. 4 members were absent, 2 seats are vacant.

it seems that Johnson is even more conservative than other guy that the moderates rejected last time. but who knows ..

It seems so. Johnson is anti-choice (forced birth), he's closely aligned with the Christian Right, was part of Trump's defense team in impeachment proceedings, and is an election denier.

Johnson says he will introduce a resolution to "fully support Israel". He is also in favor of killing future support and funding to Ukraine.

EDIT: Johnson's ascension to Speaker may be a case of be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

He's not just anti-abortion, he's in favor of outlawing divorce. And as for his record re: the 2020 elections, we should proceed on the assumption that the 2024 elections will be "hotly contested" to get the preferred result regardless of what voters do.

Expand full comment

Yuck. So, the forced birth stance is really the more reasonable one.

Expand full comment

indeed. why would expect any less of the 2024 elections or any election going forward ..

we are in a new era of not accepting what actually just happened as a way to stay fired up to change things for the next one.

my guess is that the Reps will have a particularly strong showing because they "want something back" and the Dems will be more complacent "because they are in the lead". the one possible wild card is that the in overturning Roe vs Wade decision, the Dems also feel like they lost something big.

My mom's family has an egg farm in Taiwan

Do they make 100 year old eggs? How much of a market is there for those anyway? I sort of like them, but most people I know do not.

They don't, but I guess people could. I like them, too :) My family's eggs go to consumers as eggs or in products like SunnyHills pineapple cakes!

debate over free range eggs.

i was returning some egg cartons to our local farmers market person. this one happened to be a well branded one called "handsome eggs" from the grocery store. they informed me that not all free range eggs are created equal. and how i shouldnt think that the handsome eggs are doing anything good for the environment or chickens or anything else.

Expand full comment

One could easily infer that your local farmers market person is a small egg producer who is trying to get market share (or at least sell more eggs) at the expense of a larger producer.

If you're interested in more background, check out The Cornucopia Institute website (cornucopia.org) and search for handsome eggs. The results include reporting on litigation that was settled in 2018.

go to know ..

We have found no evidence of current violations of law or misrepresentations taking place, and we have reinstated them as a ** four-egg operation ** on our scorecard. We will continue to closely monitor this brand.

On this day in 1924 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 20-7. The victory raised Cal’s record to 5-0 en route to their fifth consecutive unbeaten season. Running back Tut Imlay sparked the Bear offense with two long runs as Cal out-gained the Cougs 247-147 despite not completing a forward pass. Also on this day Nevada stunned U$C, 21-7. The Bay Area was then abuzz about the imminent arrival of pitching legend Walter Johnson who would lead a team of all stars in action the following Wednesday in Oakland.

DBD celebrates 100 years of football in Strawberry Canyon with this daily feature appearing throughout the football season.

It was in Poland. A club security guard tried to keep her from using the women's restroom. She insisted on her right to use it so he resorted to extreme violence.
