First thing I thought of when I saw the DBD title as well. I think it is great that this one comment spun a whole trip down memory lane for so many posters and we ended up talking about cock/dong socks and RHCP. The human mind and memory is a fun and mysterious thing.
I saw Jane's Addiction at Wolfgang's on Columbus like 30 years ago..."closing" for the Uptones (who I'd gone to see). Perry Farrell was a dick...can't remember why, but just remember thinking that at the time.
Technically "cocks" since it was "rock out with your cock out". Another old-time show I went to (at the Stone on Broadway). Opener was Faith no More (original singer, We Care A Lot era); then Fishbone; and RHCP as the headliners. With socks...I was almost within touching distance of the mis-used footwear! It was summer of 1984? So they were touring off their second album (the George Clinton-produced one), maybe? [Interwebs check: nope that came out in 1985, so it was the first [Andy Gill (Go4)-produced] one. Which makes sense. I recall not liking Freaky Styley as much as their eponymous debut, even though they felt otherwise.
Btw, it is really hard to keep a sock on your dong like that. My buddies and I tried freshman year when we ran through Stern but once you start running it flies off
Also I just found out that the Bluetooth SIG is scheduling an event in Seoul which means it will be cutting it very close for the ND game. The testing days are Sept 12-16 (hopefully they don't extend it). Currently United has Fri flights leaving Seoul at 6 PM and getting into ORD at 7 PM on Fri. Hopefully that's the same case next Sept.
I guess I'll buy everything for ND and then just say I need to be at the game so I need to leave Fri night.
we're pondering ND trip options. Leaning towards a multi day Lake house rental versus Chicago but its still open to debate. One place included 4 tix to the ND game for that weekend haha
I am from the Chicagoland area and had several relatives go to ND. There is nothing in South Bend really. If I were you guys I would stay in Chicago; that is what most visiting team fans do
we're aware of the lack of action in South Bend...more a thought to find a relaxing lake house and chill for a few days along with the game than anything else
I remember hearing that Sather Gate story when I took a campus tour on my junior year Spring Break visit.
I only did 3 college visits - Stanford and Cal on Spring break my junior year. (Drove up by myself, my then Cal-senior cousin took me around, took me to Cafe Milano, we sat on grass near the Campenile, sat through half an undergrad PS class, went to the bookstore and ate a slice at Blondie's, then I drove down to Palo Alto and my cousin who was a doctoral student at the time gave me his student ID card to wander around, but I was too shy/didn't understand how easy it is to walk around a college campus at the time, so I poked my head in a few doors but got intimidated. Also Stanford was on Spring Break so it was dead. While Stanford and Cal were my two choices for college, I honestly preferred Berkeley because of that one week of visiting. Moot point since I didn't get into Stanford anyways.
I also visited UCSB, but it really didn't appeal to me. If I didn't get into Cal, I think my preferences were: UCLA, UCSD, UC Irvine
I took some B-school courses at Furd. Sometimes my colleagues and I would meet at the student center which also has a good cafe. Still, it remains a taco bell to me and I am loyal to my undergrad roots. I have to say I like university avenue in Palo Alto over Berkeley's version, great weather and cafes where it seems like everyone there is pitching some start-up idea to potential investors or working on their pitch deck.
The oldest is the #1 ranked high school girl in America in the 5K. And she's only a junior. The younger one is a freshman, but she is a little bit faster than her sister at the same age, so look out. They're bonkers fast.
oh...that's a tough one. You should root for them but treat the rest of Furd sports the same way. They can win but overall the X-country or T&F teams suck.
Although this is a tempting line of reasoning, you really want your relatives to have a good college experience. If everyone on their team is way worse than them, that isn't so great.
I suppose that's right. I would have to cheer for my nieces, of course, but would just pretend they aren't at Stanfurd. And, of course, like Aaron Rogers rooting for Univ of Wisconsin basketball in the tourney, I would wear no red.
The wife has been making more meatless dishes, night before it was crispy chickpeas with shallots & bell peppers served over rice pilaf, with cilantro chutney & greek yogurt on the side. Pretty spicy, had to pair with a 2017 Riesling.
I think they should go all in and have Wurster in the background. It would really help solidify the stereotype that Cal is full of socialist/communist and believes in a command economy.
I once made a photoshopped image of Game Day happening at the Memorial Grade long time ago, when we were discussing a potential matchup back when we could post pictures at CGB. Can't find it now
Whatever they call the field next to the stadium these days, with the stadium in the background. Or, up on the east rim so they could get the view in the background.
It's so dark when Gameday starts when they're on the west coast...I wonder if the view matters as much. I also wonder if students will drag themselves up there to the rim.
Australia's refusal to let people, including overseas Australians, really fucked with the number of passenger flights going there. I'm not surprised this became an excuse for USPS to just give up.
Wow. China is letting people in (just everyone, including Chinese citizens, has to quarantine and foreigners need to get a new visa - and it's a lot of hoops)
About 12 years ago - the last time there was high US China tension - a lot of the terminally online Chinese went around posting about democracy = demon-crazy. They're much more subtle about it nowadays, except for the actual Chinese diplomats who are real shit-posters
It’s a funny thing to shitpost about. Basically you are saying “I am too stupid to make decisions for myself; life is better if I am ruled by a medieval overlord.” You’d think you’d shitpost about the size of the economy or the military or something like that
it's more that "we know how dumb people are - you guys let the common people decide things?"
12 years ago the Chinese government was seen as much more a bunch of technocrats and engineers - remnants of the Jiang Zemin era and firmly in the Hu Jintao era. And quite different than the current regime.
That’s fair. I mean, Marjorie Taylor Greene is in Congress. We need to reorg obviously but democracy itself is clearly better than authoritarianism. The risk of things going off the rails under an authoritarian govt are so high, because of the corruption bred by unchecked power. Xi is dictator for life now, right? Nutty Marjorie is nothing compared to that.
Also, I actually don’t think authoritarian govts like China could function without democracies in the world. The policy innovations come from the democratic process, and authoritarian govts cherry-pick from them.
The dangers of viewing Chinese news from abroad is there's a lot of really bad information out there. And when I try to correct it, it sounds like I'm shilling for the current government (and I'm not)
1. Xi did not install himself dictator for life. (at least not yet!). The (Xi controlled) National People's Congress removed term limits in 2018 and re-elected his allies (Le Keqing, etc. etc.) to important posts Premier, etc. And he is nominatively paramount leader as head of Communist Part of China and the head of the NSC etc. etc. But his term is next up in 2022 (I think?), and obviously his current efforts to create a Mao like cult of personality - all signs point to him continuing to be elected. Almost zero crime, high standard of living, universal health care, great infrastructure. Obviously there are tons of issues with Singapore, but it's an authoritarian 1.5 political party place and they seem to be doing pretty well.
Oh, I was honestly asking re Xi. But, I think you are missing the forest for the trees in focusing on the details so much - term limits being removed for a dictator means the only way the dictator is leaving the palace is feet first.
In China, everything is subsumed to the needs of the party. They have demonstrated that, most notably by sending in their army to murder their own people in 89 and imprisoning people in Xinjiang today. Whatever the failings of American style democracy are, they are nothing remotely as severe as that.
Singapore is a poor example because not only is it a city state but it is actually a democracy even if a poorly functioning one. You actually cast a ballot there, unlike China.
One other thing - China is not a rule of law country, and that is a big deal. There is no system of laws impartially applied that govern people’s lives. There are so many implications that flow from that.

The NFL has instituted some policy changes to the Rooney Rule designed to further enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in hiring practices.
The rule has been expanded to require teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for general manager/executive of football operations positions and all coordinator roles. Openings for head coaches already fell under such requirements.
I was skimming a couple of articles and apparently everyone knew he was a dead man walking, but the president of Barca couldn't find a replacement - so Koeman had to gut it out, lose enough games, and pocket €13,000,000 to fuck off.
Sometimes I wish I was good enough at something to retire on the proceeds of failing at it.
i loved the enthusiasm of the last dunk. while he probably could have just dribbled out the clock, i bet a young team was just super excited to beat the Lakers
After my flight yesterday, it seems like it. At least I ended up using my club passes so it was a bit better than it could've been. Meh snacks but very comfortable seats.
I can't really get into the series. I don't care for either team and I know the games are going to last past when I go to bed so it's hard to pay attention even to the early innings.
It doesn't help that they haven't been competitive. One team takes a comfortable lead and holds it for the rest of the game. Need a more dramatic game to increase interest.

I look forward to Lars Thiemann's season-high 3 point, 1 Reb stat line in 21 minutes of play, despite having 9 inches on the tallest Golden Eagle on the roster.
Still very impressed with Oregon State. Looks like my assertion that Jonathon Smith should be P12COTY after week 3 is alive and well. Lowkey happy for them and the program too, especially if they win the Civil War again this year.
I like their chances to win the north. Oregon's defense is 11th in the conference, so OSU has a big advantage with their strong running game. Of course, OSU needs to stumble on Saturday against the Bears.
I actually don’t think Oregon is that good. The ball has bounced their way in a lot of close games. Though beating Ohio State was admittedly impressive
I think you're right, although injuries have been part of that. I really want the Pac to be in the playoff, but I also really don't want to get embarrassed.
I’m done with Sergio
this has been in my head since I first saw the dbd title at like 9AM!
First thing I thought of when I saw the DBD title as well. I think it is great that this one comment spun a whole trip down memory lane for so many posters and we ended up talking about cock/dong socks and RHCP. The human mind and memory is a fun and mysterious thing.
I thought you had an issue with Romo!
How he gets anyone out remains a mystery...yet he still does.
As for the other Romo...those Corona ads are pretty lame.
Other = Tony?
I saw Jane's Addiction at Wolfgang's on Columbus like 30 years ago..."closing" for the Uptones (who I'd gone to see). Perry Farrell was a dick...can't remember why, but just remember thinking that at the time.
?????
it's the second line of the song "Jane Says" from 1987's "Nothing's Shocking" by Jane's Addiction.
Didn't Blondie's have a poster of Nothing's Shocking and the famous RHCP's poster where they're wearing socks on their dongs?
Dongs. people don't use that word nearly enough.
Ohhhh, Fishbone. That's one band I would've loved to have seen live.
Btw, it is really hard to keep a sock on your dong like that. My buddies and I tried freshman year when we ran through Stern but once you start running it flies off
Juana's Adiccion!!!!
That's the first Jane's Addiction song I heard. My roommate in the dorms played it.
there are others?
I certainly can't name them. I'd guess he played others but I clearly don't remember.

That same twitter says the Jeff Tedford will be honored at the Oregon State game!
Someone be sure to lend him a clipboard.
oh damn...I guess this is the big news. What a tailgate to miss.

we have a good friend who lives a little north of Ft Wayne so about 60 min from South Bend. we may stay w/ them ...

we're aware of the lack of action in South Bend...more a thought to find a relaxing lake house and chill for a few days along with the game than anything else
Fair enough! There is a rookie league Cubs affiliate there now in what is supposed to be a nice park, though I have never been.
I applied to ND, got in, went to visit, and I was like no way I am going to Berkeley!
The lady friend has been researching houses as well.
figure we'll start finalizing 6-7 months out
Guess Newellbany and I will get going on this as well, as we have a close friend & his crew that all went to ND.
They've been waiting their whole lives for the chance to see Cal run out onto the field at Notre Dame Stadium
I assume you guys are looking at staying there before not after the weekend.
TBD
please provide more details for said party bus

Cute squirrel.

Thinking back, it's interesting how oblivious I was to Stanford when I was in high school. Maybe it's because so many of my relatives went to Cal.
"Writes Noodles and Window Seats" --somehow this reminds me of "Eats Shoots and Leaves".
I told my kids if they got into Furd and wanted to go, they could but couldn't root for the sports teams.
This will get complicated for me if either of my nieces, who are the fastest girls in America, decide to go to Stanfurd.
if they go to stanfurd, root for them individually but for their team to lose.
I'm sorry what's the complication? Dead to you is dead to you.
What sport are they fastest in? Track, XC, soccer, ...?
The oldest is the #1 ranked high school girl in America in the 5K. And she's only a junior. The younger one is a freshman, but she is a little bit faster than her sister at the same age, so look out. They're bonkers fast.
not really...you disown them. Seems pretty simple to me
oh...that's a tough one. You should root for them but treat the rest of Furd sports the same way. They can win but overall the X-country or T&F teams suck.

Sproul Plaza
Think Gameday would be on Sproul Plaza (in a magical world in which Gameday comes to Berkeley)?
I think they should go all in and have Wurster in the background. It would really help solidify the stereotype that Cal is full of socialist/communist and believes in a command economy.
How about in the Greek theater, where we have the pep rallies
Heh
I would prefer the Memorial Grade with the Campanile in the background
Oh, that's an iconic backdrop. Natural amphitheater, plenty of room, and a central location, too. Perfect.
Now all we need is to be good enough to warrant national attention...
We should have had it for the Tennessee game in 2007. But the VaTech shooting happened and they went there instead.
That’s the problem...not to minimize the Va Tech shooting, but there always seems to be a reason for Ess-Penn to send the crew elsewhere.
I once made a photoshopped image of Game Day happening at the Memorial Grade long time ago, when we were discussing a potential matchup back when we could post pictures at CGB. Can't find it now
I found it!

That would be cool. If it ever happens....
Whatever they call the field next to the stadium these days, with the stadium in the background. Or, up on the east rim so they could get the view in the background.
East Rim would be good. Or maybe the Rugby field to provide more space for fans behind the guys.
Maxwell Family Field is the one next to the stadium, I think. Are you surmising or is it already known that it'd be one of those?
It's so dark when Gameday starts when they're on the west coast...I wonder if the view matters as much. I also wonder if students will drag themselves up there to the rim.
Surmising.
My favorite pastime.

Lakers blow a 26 point lead to the Thunder LMAO
My said "The Lakers are so old, they belong on CBS"
Heh...Westbrook ejected because he didn't like a last second dunk. And he had a Quadruple double with 10 TOs.
i loved the enthusiasm of the last dunk. while he probably could have just dribbled out the clock, i bet a young team was just super excited to beat the Lakers
The Thunder were winless and at home. Go for the dunk! Westbrook claims he's old school. He even said don't flip your bat and all that.
It's good to see Westbrook help OKC win again

for me baseball is the ultimate regional sport. if my team isn't in it, I don't care about it.
I'll watch any NBA basketball game, many college and NFL games and zero baseball games when my team isn't involved.
Yes, totally agree. WS ratings are more dependent on the market of the teams involved than are Super Bowl or NBA Finals ratings
I agree. I love baseball but the WS this year feels like a random interleague matchup in July. I am flipping page to NBA
It doesn't help that they haven't been competitive. One team takes a comfortable lead and holds it for the rest of the game. Need a more dramatic game to increase interest.

I'm rooting for the Beavers in every game after this week with the possible exception against Oregon, depending on Oregon's CFP chances
No better heartbreak victim for the Beavers than Oski. (It's worked out well before!)
f'ing Stanfurd. They just HAD to go and beat Oregon. Every year it seems they figure out a way to knock the Pac out of the playoffs.
I actually don’t think Oregon is that good. The ball has bounced their way in a lot of close games. Though beating Ohio State was admittedly impressive
I think you're right, although injuries have been part of that. I really want the Pac to be in the playoff, but I also really don't want to get embarrassed.
