Glad DBD is back. I was concerned we had another unannounced termination of a useful service, which is an all to common occurrence anymore.

Been away for 2 weeks. Was in Paris visiting No 1 who is there for a 3 month fellowship sponsored by Penn for doing research for his PhD in Art History. He also has another one next Jan to May, which I'll probably also make a trip there to visit him. My aunt lives in Paris with her daughter and grandkids so my mom went out with me and is staying for a month. I also have another cousin (mom's older brother) there with her partner and daughter.

No 1 is also being nominated by Penn for a 3 year fellowship sponsored by the National Gallery of Art which will be 2 years in either Paris or the Met and then 1 year at the National Gallery. He kind of doesn't want to do it since it means 2 years in Paris away from friends and family.

Then on the way back I visited HSB for a few days, which he probably mentioned. Went to World Series game 3 thanks to HSB. Was going to watch WS game 5 on the plane last night but decided I wouldn't in case I would jinx it. Boy I missed a good one!

Nice. Trip looked awesome.

Certainly a good one if you like seeing teams piss away sure W’s! ;-)

I mean the Yankees that did that twice over the last week. Couldn't have happened to a better team. Although I did watch the NC State game in Paris early Sun morning so I did see a game get pissed away.

Exactly…very palpable Cal vibes.

Such piss poor baseball in the World Series by the best team in the American League is bad for the sport, tho I am not bummed the Yanks came up looking like frauds.

Our best was when No 1 was maybe 2 or 3 and a baseball. I was the radar gun guy behind home plate and my ex had a Nomo jersey. Was at a friend's mom's home that lives across the street from Willie Mays so we trick or treated there. He didn't answer the door, though I was told sometimes he does.

We got none last year so expect none this year. Also, we are becoming more nutritionally conscious and so less keen on passing out candy.

If someone comes by maybe we'll give them an orange.

We also have misgivings about passing out candy. It's feeling less and less responsible as time goes by.

Hoping we get some now that the house across the road has kids when a new family moved in this summer. Used to be a busy night, but then all the kids on the road turned into adults, and we haven't had any in years.

That's what happens when you have your carved pumpkins destroyed by marauding vandals. Sometimes, you give up on the holiday.

Idaho students came marauding through your neighborhood?

HS & College students can and do those sorts of things, but they sometimes go off, usually after an excessive amount of beer, has been consumed, on any other given weekend.

We're far enough from campus that I doubt any of the marauders were college aged. Or, at least, my observations have been of HS aged kids walking through the neighborhood on Halloween night.

When I was in college, the one time I lived in town for Halloween, I remember the high school kids coming around about an hour after the littler kids tapered off, and they were trick or treating, complete with costumes/make up, and pillow cases for their haul. Fortunately, we had some leftover that we hadn't eaten yet!

Expand full comment

I don't know when it started, but there haven't been trick or treaters in our part of town since I moved back in 2018. Our part doesn't have as many kids and we're up a small hill. i assume down by the middle school there are more kids with families and it's flat so that's probably where they all are.

[FB] Mendoza Selected As Manning Award Quarterback Of The Week

https://calbears.com/news/2024/10/30/football-mendoza-selected-as-manning-award-quarterback-of-the-week.aspx

California redshirt sophomore quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been selected as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Mendoza won an online fan voting contest over seven other Stars of the Week named by the Manning Award.

Well deserved. I've rarely seen in years a more dramatic display of what a difference a quality QB makes than last Saturday compared to recent results, the first time OSU played a team with one since the Oregon game.

I was impressed with Fernando since he came on the scene, and all he does week after week is improve and confirm those early impressions.

Despite the efforts of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers were never in the game and lost 134-110 to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

AD and LeBron tried to shoulder the load, but it wasn’t enough. AD scored 22 points with 13 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists and a block. LeBron had 26 points with six rebounds and three assists.

Dodgers improbable Game 5 comeback makes them World Series champions

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/10/30/24283828/dodgers-comeback-game-5-blake-treinen-walker-buehler-world-series-champions

In a game they had no business winning in a World Series they had no intention of giving away, the Dodgers came back. Using every pitcher they reasonably had available and then some, Los Angeles capitalized on just enough chances to stun the Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium and win the championship.

The back-and-forth game was a sloppy mess at times, but in the eighth inning the Dodgers trailed by a run. But they got two singles and a walk off Tommy Kahnle to load the based with nobody out. In came closer Luke Weaver, working his third day in a row, and the Dodgers got two sacrifice flies, mixing in a walk and catcher’s interference in between.

The body language from Gerritt Cole after he failed to cover 1st base in the 5th inning with the bases loaded was telling. And as much as you could tell the other Yankees on the field were trying not to show it, mentally, the jig was up. Everything just spiraled out of control in that inning after that.

I'd say it was spiraling long before that. Other Yankees defensive miscues had already given away two free outs in that inning.

Freddie Freeman wins World Series MVP with 4 home runs, 12 RBI

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/10/30/24283252/freddie-freeman-world-series-mvp-home-runs-rbi-dodgers

Freddie Freeman set records during the 2024 World Series, hitting four home runs with a record 12 RBI in the Dodgers’ win over the Yankees in five games. That made the first baseman an easy choice for the World Series MVP.

Freeman homered in each of the first four games in this series, just the second player to homer in four consecutive games in one World Series, and the first to do so on a team that wasn’t sanctioned for illegally stealing signs. His four total home runs in this Fall Classic matched Duke Snider (1952 and 1955) for most by a Dodger in one World Series.

My wife calls our son the Dodgers' good luck charm. The first sign where I thought that might have been true was when Teo won the Home Run Derby for the Dodgers for the first time. That was the first time he had been watching the Derby; I joked that I had to wait 35+ years for that.

Dodgers scored 5 runs in the 5th inning of Game 5. #5 for the Dodgers scored the fifth run. Our son was born on 5/5.

I'm a believer now.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts.

Happy Halloween everyone. Obviously California does not have a football game today but they have played on October 31st fourteen times compiling a record of 9-5. In Memorial Stadium the Bears are 4-4 on Halloween and are an impressive 5 -1 on the road. One of those road wins was 27-0 against Cal Poly Pomona in 1925, the last of four games Cal played against the Mustangs, all Bear wins. The Sturdy Golden Ones also had a rare win at U$C on Halloween 1970, 13-10. The Trojans had gone into the game ranked 18th in the nation while California was sporting a 3-4 record. Randy Wersching’s 46-yard field goal with 4:36 left in the game providing the winning margin. It was the Bears’ first victory over SC since 1958.The Sturdy Golden Ones notched their first ever road win under Bruce Snyder on this day in 1987, 20-6 in Oregon. Jeff Tedford’s 2009 team won a thriller on Halloween at ASU, 23-21 with Giorgio Tavecchio converting a game-wining field goal twenty-one seconds before the final gun.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season. This feature is brought to you by Count Dracula. I literally suck.
