Best Halloween costumes

O.Overall's avatar

I am reading Prisoner of Azkaban with my kids. I told them I was going to dress in all black and tape jokes to my shirt so that I was “Non-Serious Black.” One of my 8 year olds started crying and said she would be too embarrassed by me to go trick or treating, so I did not wear a costume. Upshot: it’s not just my wife who is embarrassed by me anymore!

Cugel's avatar

I think that was clever.

SGBear's avatar

I must be getting old because I didn't recognize 90% of the costumes.

Newellbany's avatar

every dad in the neighborhood was ted lasso, the new go-to, low-effort Halloween costume for men.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Is Ted Lasso this year's Jake from State Farm?

CruzinBears's avatar

I rocked Gilligan all day yesterday on the water, but had to explain it to everyone under 30

Cugel's avatar

Heh, com'on it's also pretty nondescript, now if you went as Mary Ann...

Cugel's avatar

Funny, last night my son was saying costumes on Halloween for adults are dumb, he can be such a wet blanket sometimes. Even I had fun in college going in costume to Halloween parties.

Wiata78's avatar

Adults in kiddie costumes can be dumb, but grown up costums can be cool. Went to a lot of fun Halloween parties in college.

SGBear's avatar

Great athletes who were then suddenly not great (and not due to injury)

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

whatever happened to Russell White?

Terence's avatar

Everyone told him he needed more weight to survive in the NFL so he put on 15 pounds before his senior season. It wasn't good weight (or he didn't keep his speed) and he had a decent but not outstanding senior season.

MoriBear's avatar

Ivan Rabb. Shoulda entered the draft with Jaylen! (altho I didn't have that opinion back then)

Terence's avatar

I don't think Ivan's game was made for the 2012+ NBA era. Finesse power forward who doesn't have deep range. He would been great in the Jermaine O'Neal/Shareef Abdur-Rahim era of posting up 4s for face-up jumpers or one-dribble moves, but nowadays a 4 needs to be able to stretch the floor, rim run and jump out and guard wings and guards on pick and roll switches, and as much as I love Ivan, he doesn't have that tool kit.

MoriBear's avatar

Junior vs Senior year. Shoulda left early. Went into social work, iirc.

MoriBear's avatar

Lincecum? Brian Wilson? (Or were there injuries there?) With Timmy, it just seemed to be that he couldn't get anyone out anymore.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Plus the League figured out Big Time Timmy Jim....started laying off that splitter in the dirt.

sycasey's avatar

More like his fastball velocity dropped, so hitters didn't have to start their swings so early and could more easily lay off the breaking stuff. If it was just about figuring him out they would have done it before he won the second Cy Young.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Meh, agree to disagree - plenty of guys lose velocity but still get dudes out. When you no longer can count on your bread & butter pitch to get swinging strikes, it makes you susceptible to hitter’s counts…then they own you. Hitters adjust, pitchers adjust…Similar thing happened to Gausman this year, after a hot-as-blazes start.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Bo was an injury though.

Wiata78's avatar

oops, thanks, I misread the criteria

Cugel's avatar

No, he was never great.

Terence's avatar

5 time NBA First team, 3 time defensive player of the year, center of a team that beat prime Lebron, 5 time rebounding leader, 100% sure fire hall of famers.

Hated him when he played for my team. He absolutely ruined the 2014 rockets but 2009-2012 he was one of the 6 best players on the planet.

Cugel's avatar

Yeah, but does that make him "great" in the larger sense of the word? I say no - admittedly he was great for a short time, but even then he had liabilities.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Oh man, that guy's demise was quick

Terence's avatar

Shaun Alexander (we can probably just list a ton of running backs who had 2-5 great seasons and then fell off a cliff - Priest Holmes, Christian Okoye, Larry Johnson)

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Running backs are tough to put on this list bc of the pounding they take…there’s no way they can keep it up. Even Derrick Henry, a Cyberdyne systems cyborg is breaking down.

sycasey's avatar

Not sure he was ever that good. He got yards and TDs in his first year, but that's because he had heavy volume. His yards/carry average was only 3.6.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I think it was more about his production at Alabama and having a good rookie season on a bad Browns team.

sycasey's avatar

Yeah, I don't think his rookie season was actually all that good.

Dropoff from college performance, yeah sure, but there's a long list of those guys.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah, he fell off hard. I thought he was going to be the best of the Saban era Alabama backs at the time, I was very wrong.

dcblue's avatar

Wow. I get home, have dinner, and turn on the laptop to almost 250 comments.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i am respectably nearsighted, -4.00 to -4.50.

but my main issue is that i have astigmatism, about 1/3 of the power

back in HS i would wear hard contacts for many years. it made my eyes super red and i was super sensitive to any dust in the air.

HAG probably remembers that when we used to umpire LMYA baseball i would need to stop the game and tweak my contacts every time some little wind would kick up the infield dirt.

nowadays i have soft lenses but only wear contacts if i am doing something active or am outside and want/need to wear sunglasses.

Scootie's avatar

I used to have astigmatism, and wore glasses over my contact when I needed to drive at night, watch a movie or do a lot of work at a screen. It went away with age, and by the time I was 45 or so I was able to get rid of them.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I didn't know astigmatism could go away.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i did not know that either.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

also, my younger one, 14, has almost the identical Rx as i do. we could swap contacts if we really had to

Scootie's avatar

My ophthalmologist said that it probably fixed itself as a result of the changes in eye shape due to aging. I also needed reading glasses much later than most people (I am almost 55 and just started on them this year), and he thinks that the decrease in astigmatism was probably the beginning of the change that normally makes people need reading glasses, but it fixed a problem before it made a problem for me.

dcblue's avatar

Re: aging. It's been weird. I've got more than ten years on you and still have no need for readers. I've also noticed that my problems with distance have actually improved over the last couple years.

Cugel's avatar

It can change, mine did, and now I have 20/20 (with glasses).

MoriBear's avatar

I have/had astigmatism, but never had a real-world effect

heyalumnigo's avatar

-3.25 L -2.25 R. And it's getting harder to read with my glasses on.

Terence's avatar

this is the first year that I've had real issues with night vision and reading things in dark restaurants (like I have to use my iphone light on menus all the time now). I got new contacts and it has helped .. . a little. but the vision thing was when I started feeling really old for the first time.

heyalumnigo's avatar

It is harder for me to read with my contacts on than with my glasses. Although my glasses are .25 step lower than my contacts. Usually I only wear them when I'm going to be doing something in the sun for an extended period of time or something like going to the gym or something athletic.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

same. i even have trouble w/ the computer screen or phone w/ the contacts.

i have progressive lenses on the eyeglasses

Terence's avatar

my glasses are only for allergy season, being in Beijing (or any dry dusty town) or when I have to watch Cal games at 3am and go to sleep at 8pm and wake up at 2:55am and try to get the illegal stream working

goldenone's avatar

I think I am starting to get more floaters...age thing I guess

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

My father was in the British Secret Service Mr. Manfrengensensen

Terence's avatar

Between 1985 and 1990 I was a huge comics collector - mainly X titles (Men, Force, Factor, New Mutants, Wolverine's solo stuff) and very oddly the Avengers stuff I read was all West Coast Avengers, and that intertwined with the Vision and Scarlett Witch 12 issue maxi-series, that I really liked because so much of it wasn't about being super heroes, but super-hereoes trying to live a normal life. Which is what I kind of wanted to see from the D+ series.

TheScientist019's avatar

They might dive into that with Hawkeye depending on how closely it follows a seminal comic run that it's definitely taking some inspiration from.

sycasey's avatar

-6.25 L, -4.75 R

I used to wear contacts all the time, then at around age 30 switched to glasses for most work days at the office, contacts for weekend activities. I don't really have any problems with either.

For some reason my original eye doctor set me up with hard lenses when I first got contacts. This was in the 90s, when soft lenses were already widely available. Eventually I switched over to soft, which are much more comfortable.

CruzinBears's avatar

-2.25 in both eyes, it's been consistent for 10+ years now so I've been considering Lasix more and more every time I spend $200+ on new contacts

heyalumnigo's avatar

My vision hasn't changed for at least the last 17-18 years. I would consider Lasix, except for the night starburst thing that some people have.

MoriBear's avatar

I kinda have that, particularly with red lights. but it's small potatoes compared to the benefits. like worrying about vaccine side effects as a reason for not getting vaxxed.

altho vax are free and lasic is not!

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

Re: costs

Now is the time (open enrollment) to put aside money in your FSA/HSA if you know you'll be spending it on LASIK or other things (like sunscreen haha)

Also, you can get schedule a free consult at the Cal Optometry School to see if LASIK is even a good option for you. I went earlier this year, and they said no, but that I could consider PRK (I opted not to).

MoriBear's avatar

I'd go for it...it's been great! (as typed below), I was ±4.5 for awhile. hoops, skiing (w/o fogged glassed), identifying the person sleeping next to you in the morning ;-)

Scootie's avatar

I am blind as a bat (my contacts are -9.0 in both eyes, my glasses are god knows what, over -10). My nearsightedness doesn't bug me, my contacts are super comfortable and I don't even think about them.

But in the last 12 months I have started needing reading glasses, at very low power (+0.75) in low light, and I absolutely hate it. I can't imagine what it's going to be like when they're like +2.0!

Also, floaters suck, though they do seem to decrease over time, or maybe your brain just gets used to them. The first year they appeared, I really struggled with them.

Who knew that aging brought so many vision issues??

Wiata78's avatar

My eyes were also that bad ever since a very young age. Always needed thick glasses. One thing, though, if you take your glasses off it's like having a 10x magnifying glass. I was always able to read the tiny print on things like pill bottles pretty easily. Sort of a weak super power.

MoriBear's avatar

I started getting floaters about 20 years ago. they're weird, but I don't notice them anymore. I'm trying to see them now, but can't. I don't thikn they've disappeared, tho

in Soph year of HS, I was 20-16 vision. 5 years later, I needed glasses.

my eyes got to like -4.75/-4.25...and were like that for several years. then got Lasic in 2004 and it's been great. I need reading glasses, but don't use them

DC Trojan's avatar

my vision is as bad as my athletic skills

I have cousin-in-law and spouse coming into town next week. On one hand, they love food. On the other hand, they seem very conservative palate-wise. I mean, they only eat "Western food" and every dish seems to come from the Joy of Cooking. I'm thinking I will only cook "American" food: heritage pork chops, porcini-sauced tortellini, green beans w/ bacon/almonds/balsamic, butter lettuce/roasted beet/grapefruit/praline salad, skillet corn bread w/ apple honey-butter.

Started Midnight Mass on NEtflix over the weekend. 'Tis the season. 3 episodes in (7 total), and it's good. Excellent worldbuilding for the first couple episodes while slowly uncovering the horror/mystery aspects.

SGBear's avatar

Squid Games (Netflix, 15/19 WB). Certainly a flawed production, but it was really entertaining - in a sick, fucked up kind of way. Only saw one pink soldier for Halloween.

MoriBear's avatar

I watched E1 of Alice in Borderland (JP show on Netflix). Haven't watched SG, but was sold as a similar show. The plot was okay, but I enjoyed the Shibuya scenes.

Was gonna watch E2 Sat night, but daughter went to bed late and then spent the rest of the night watching the Dubs and postgame

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I enjoyed it...definitely pretty fucked up but I thought it was good.

Fire Starkey's avatar

Yeah part of Foundation keeps me entertained and then others don't. Usually I care about the non-Trantor stuff.

Btw, 2nd shingles shot knocked me out for like 1.5 days.

DC Trojan's avatar

I don't know, to be honest. If you had Moderna for the first two doses and weren't bothered by it, I'd stick with Moderna - it seems to have the most durable results anyway.

What? Jimmy G is good again? I don't know what to do with this.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Wait...is Chase Garber's career paralleling Jimmy G??

GoldenSD81's avatar

Garbers would have to take us to a Rose Bowl for that to be true.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I'd say the National Championship game...the Niners have gone to the Super Bowl 7 times in the last 40 years (17.5%)...that's within shouting distance of 20%, nearly 1 in 5...

We've sniffed Pasadena once in 60+...

But your point is valid.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Garbers could come back for his 15th season at Cal and he wouldn’t take us to a NCG. Rose Bowl seems more attainable and something the fanbase and alums care about more.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I think he could be around 15 seasons...

He's gonna gonna set all the Cal QB records when he returns next year for his 5th year of starting.

Cugel's avatar

He looked really good in the part I watched.

Justbear's avatar

Von Miller is traded to Rams

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

At least the Rams get something for their picks.

The 49ers waste theirs because the scouting department can't identify talent, and Shanahan can't develop it, for shit. McGlinchy, Pettis, Kinlaw, Aiyuk, Aaron Banks, Trey Sermon...it's laughable.

GoldenSD81's avatar

The Niners haven’t drafted well for a while, going back to Harbaugh they had a lot of misses.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I'm a Lance guy and think if you're gonna make that stupid trade to deal 2 future 1's to move up to 3, he was the best guy of the bunch, INCLUDING Trevor Lawrence...Trey Lance is going to be really good, bc guys with his physical tools, work ethic and mental make-up have the potential to be special. My issue is Kyle Shanahan - he's the most overrated HC in the NFL, and flat out does not develop players. Look at what he's doing with Aiyuk, after doing the same thing with Pettis. Kyle will be fired sooner than later.

goldenone's avatar

I remember Aiyuk against the Bears. He was almost as good as DK Metcalf.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Rams gave up their 2nd and 3rd round picks in the 22 draft. The Rams have been busy leveraging their future for sometime now and trading away draft picks.

The last time the Rams had a 1st round pick in the NFL draft was in 2016 when they selected Goff.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I heard a stat that OKC has something like 35 draft picks over the next 6 or so drafts. That's crazy.

g.oso's avatar

and what a bust that was

GoldenSD81's avatar

It looked good at the time and did help improve the team. Goff has looked bad this season and it isn’t just because of the Lions.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

With Stafford, they have a legit shot this year and next.

After that, tho, you're looking at some lean years for Kroenke's Krew...

Justbear's avatar

DC Trojan's avatar

I really doubt it. I don't think that the AD or the President would be willing to put up with his bullshit, even before you get to the whole "sheltering a spousal abuser on staff" thing... I mean, even if for some reason someone didn't think that was disqualifying on its face, it would be odd to take the PR hit on top of all the other self-inflicted problems the school has.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Well I defer to someone with DC Trojan in their handle, DC Trojan...but again, it's a splashy hire, and the guy flat out wins at the collegiate level. I don't think sheltering the spousal abuser on staff would prevent the AD/President from hiring him if the actual powers that be wanted him....until they hire someone else, he's a more viable candidate than Mike Tomlin or Jack Del Rio....

And based on yesterdays positively awful showing at SEA, he is going to be available sooner rather than later.

DC Trojan's avatar

I can't imagine he's got much traction for west coast recruiting.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Does he still want to coach? I would imagine Texas Tech would be interested. He would probably be a candidate at SMU if Dykes leaves SMU for TTU or TCU.

AndyPanda's avatar

Trading head coaches across town! Wouldn't that make for some juicy blog article writing!

SGBear's avatar

This reminds me... the neighborhood where I stayed for the Cal/TCU game had their curbs painted to mark their alma mater. EVERYONE went to college in Texas, so it was either TCU, TTU, UT(Austin), aTm, Baylor, or to a much lesser extent SMU. I gotta imagine that cross-town switching in Texas is high treason.

they're both official licensees of the university - so both have gone through legal and marketing review. (I used to do licensing for the NBA so I've gone through the process a lot)

I like the Oski Wow-Wow design, but I wish it were available in women's sizes.

Just buy a small, and wash it in hot water...

It's not a matter of size; it's a matter of cut.

I mentioned this to a few people saturday, but I'm bummed Homefield wasted a couple of spots on the Cal script. We can get that anywhere, and I wished they would have dug a little deeper for something else

Justbear's avatar

Yeah we can get Cal script shirts elsewhere.

More weird Oski logos

I'm going to get the hoodie. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. I recently bought a CALIFORNIA hoodie with the walking bear for the gold-out.

WRITEFORCAL for your discount! (I already burned my discount by using FULLCAST on a UC Irvine shirt and Fullcast tee)

You have more than one email address though. Unless they check your shipping address.

I had people pinging me on twitter when they did the SC release and I didn't have the heart to point out that I don't wear hoodies or t-shirts. They make great products though.

GoldenSD81's avatar

You just wear tank tops year round or go shirtless?

DC Trojan's avatar

collared shirts or gtfo. I do wear t-shirts for stuff like yard work, and occasionally if I'm not leaving the house.

g.oso's avatar

but that Tire Biter shirt is sweet

DC Trojan's avatar

it really is - I might buy one anyway

Got 2 tees for me, 1 for Mrs Paulie, one for the spawn. It was a good day!

Grinell (one of the two Cal falcons along with Annie) was found badly injured south of campus on Friday :(

Sounds like he's going to be ok, but has some healing to do and it's unknown if he'll return to campus after his recovery.
