Why fix it if ain’t Baroque!

Until recently, I naively saw the above painting "The Swing" as a painting of a nice lady having fun on a swing. Then it was explained to me that actually the painting is quite controversial and lurid.

O.Overall's avatar

If it requires an accompanying lecture to explain, is it really lurid ?

Cugel's avatar

Lurid at the time it was painted - but not so much now.

I wonder if back then, there was actually no pornographic paintings at all, or just none in high society? Stuff like this reminds me of when I was in high school trying to sneak bawdy jokes into the school newspaper, past the eyes of the reviewing teacher. Only funny because of the precise situation in which the jokes appeared, as opposed to being funny in general.

Cugel's avatar

Hmmmm... Not actually an expert on pornographic paintings from the 18th Cent... I don't think there really was any - unlike the Roman period where they definitely got busy with it.

And you call yourself cultured?! Kidding! I have no idea either. I just think back to like middle school and what dudes would scribble in their notebooks and wonder if that isn’t sort of universal

Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by Virginia Bakery.

From the good stuff is in the middle department:

Nibs Price’s five-year tenure as Cal football’s head coach (1925-1930) finished and ended with losing seasons. But in the three years in between the Bears went 20-6-3 and earned a Rose Bowl berth in 1928. Pete Elliot’s short three-year stint as head coach (1957-1959) began with a 1-9 campaign and ended with a 2-8 record. In the middle season Cal went to the Rose Bowl.

Cal trivia fun fact appears on DBD every Tuesday and Thursday during the football season.

SGBear's avatar

Nibs was also Cal's basketball coach and was so for much longer than football. He was 453-294 (0.606) over 29 seasons. Prior to going to the Rose Bowl in 1929 (1928 season), he won a national championship in basketball in 1926-7.

He's a Cal sports legend who deserves a place in the pantheon along with the likes of Andy Smith, Brick Morse and Clint Evans.

“ The Bears play in a power conference, but they have mid-major resources, Ivy League admission standards, and a campus culture that places a relatively low priority on major sports.”

Good article. That quote lays it out as well as any.

I do find if Carol Christ's comment about athletics and the "wraparound porch" is troubling. Hope it's lip service.

g.oso's avatar

And the end of that quote is something as well…

“I understand that football and basketball are revenue sports, but I don’t see them as the sole measure of athletic success.”

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Ya, that's what stuck with me...hope she's just trying to be diplomatic, as you don't want to outwardly show preference. Worry that it could be status quo for the next decade, though.

We only got about a dozen trick-or-treaters because we're in a new development. There came a point of the night where the same four kids who thought it would be a great idea to drive from house to house trick-or-treating over and over again. One of them had a beard. We turned out the lights afterwards and they still tried to trick-or-treat.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I turned the lights off and put the recycling bin in front of the walkway because Jonesy pup goes absolutely ape schitt every time the doorbell rings. Honestly not sure it made a difference, other than to make me look like a total a$$hole, though we don't have a ton of trick-or-treat-eligible kids in the neighborhood, and one look at W4C during a Cal football game-chat will tell you I'm probably an a$$hole regardless. ;-)

DC Trojan's avatar

I don't know how many kids came by total because I wasn't answering the door, but I would guess we probably had about 6 total arrivals.

Cugel's avatar

I had lots of fun giving away candy - the street we're on now is pretty busy; the loft I lived in had nobody ever, except once one of the kids living in it came by.

DC Trojan's avatar

My daughter and I broke into the candy on Friday and ate most of the Crunch and 100 Grand bars, a decision which we are regretting this morning now that the leftover chocolate bars are Bounty and Butterfingers.

Cook/Wasserman says GOP gaining momentum and likely to regain control of the House

I've tried reading some of the articles about the margin of error within polls and I'm increasingly convinced they're not fit for purpose. I won't be surprised if the GOP regains control of the House, mind you, but that's just because I expect results I don't like.

GlueAndBold's avatar

They've been likely to regain the House for at least the past year.

I recall that's sometimes a controversy, when BYU grads are drafted into the NFL, they start out a few years older, suggesting their career might be shorter.

Hackett is likely one and done. Maybe being the Packers OC when you’ve got Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon is like shrimpin’ for Forrest after Hurricane Carmen rolled through….easy.

LaFleur calls plays anyways.

He probably is and Staley should be two and done with the Chargers.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I am sooooo not a fan of Staley…Lombardi’s a tool as well.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I liked Staleys aggressiveness last season but for a defensive guy, his defense sure is bad despite having talent this season.

Lombardi was such a terrible hire. I thought Staley should have kept Pep Hamilton or Shane Steichen.

Justbear's avatar

I saw Pep Hamilton somewhere recently but can't remember where. He was dining in full Texans gear

Yesterday or two days ago this Bill Burr clip appeared on my reddit feed. I think the background of this is that there was a comedy day, or something similar, and the Philly crowed was abusing the previous comics. So he came out firing on all barrels, ragging on Philly. For about 13 min.

The NFL equivalent of being a Cal fan is being a Lions fan. Since winning the title in 1957 they've only been to the playoffs twelve times and one but one post-season game with zero NFC championship game appearances in that time. Wonder who their current QB is, maybe he can turn it around.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I would say the Chargers are a close second and their colors are similar as well.

Oski Disciple's avatar

It should come as no surprise that as a child I adopted the Lions as my second favorite NFL team.

Siberia of the NFL...

Justbear's avatar

They also just traded away Hockenson to Vikings. Is that indication of our fate as well? Lose the best player to a rival team? But instead Cal will not get anything in return.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Campbell was a puzzling hire at the time.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Terrible hire, hopefully the Lions don’t give him a 5 year fully guaranteed extension after some team ask to interview him for their HC vacancy.
