Manchin and Sinema are equal opportunity vandals of democracy. They're following in the footsteps of many other members of Congress before them. They just happen to have outsized importance due to circumstance. And they're gutless wonders, besides.

Oh, for sure not. I especially never dozed off in the front row of UCSC's largest lecture hall and started dreaming about volleyball. And while blocking at the net in this dream that never happened, I definitely didn't start flailing my arms around, causing the professor to pause his lecture to address the idiot in the front row at the exact time he intended to make his fundamental point.
After the hubbub about parental leave and the explosion of school-borne COVID cases in August/September, it's incredible that the Democrats have yet again fumbled away an easy political win. It would be so easy to proclaim themselves as the party of family values: keeping kids safe, making it easier to take care of newborns, and all the stuff in the Build Back Better plan about universal pre-K, child tax credits, etc.
I agree with all this. The Dems need to campaign on them being the party of family values.
The maternity leave, I’m bummed about it not being in the bill but being in California, it doesn’t impact me. It would have been great if they could have come up with a compromise of 4 weeks.

Yeah, he followed the right playbook to win in a blue-leaning swing state: campaign as a moderate in the general election and focus on local issues. Stayed away from Trump other than collecting his endorsement. We'll see if other Republicans can learn from this (probably not).
Yep and other GOP politicians running for senate or the house won’t be able to follow this playbook during their primary, they will have to work hard to out trump the other GQP candidates.
Not as much as people seem to think. The VA governor's race always goes to the party that doesn't hold the presidency. Not sure why people expected that to change this year. Even the amount of the swing is not abnormal for their historical voting pattern.
Yeah, VA governor's elections are weird. They term-limit everyone out of running for re-election (in consecutive terms) and they always hold them during an off-year (so not during a Presidental or Congressional election year).
The off-off-year calendar gives the governor and members of the House of Delegates the option of running for a federal office (US Rep or US Senator) while still holding office. Or vice versa.

And Repubs won all the rural areas as they normally do. In one sense this may have been predictable as Virginia has voted for a governor from the opposite party from the President every time but once in the last 40 years.

Approved in Oregon, and enough to vaccinate ~50% of the kids in the 5-11 range available the next day. We shall see how long it takes to get some people to realize being healthy is better than not for kids. It has been more strongly supported by the 12-17 set than some of their own parents.
No. I had a brief flurry of sanitizing surfaces at work when it wasn't clear if transmission via surface contamination was a possibility. But since mid-April 2020, not so much.
If I'm eating at my desk, like I am right now (tomato and chicken soup from the capitol's cafeteria), I'll use one of those Clorox wipes afterwards. More to clean up the crumbs (in this case, the oyster crackers) than for any sanitizing properties.
Not usually. But like dcblue said, if there is a wipe where the carts are I'll use it.
The one thing I did do on my flights the last couple of weeks is that United hands out little wipes and I used them on the arm rests and the tray. AA didn't hand them out on my one AA flight.
i never really sanitized surfaces, just used hand sanitizer a bunch early on in coronavirus times. i still use hand sanitizer if it is publicly available, but not all the time at all
my takes is that it is airborne and that is mainly how people are getting it and the surfaces are very unlikely 2nd order effect ...
Still using hand sanitizer more than usual. There is a pump dispenser sitting in the door of the truck, so its quick and easy. But also agree, I think the vast amount of transmission is airborne, not picked up off surfaces. Of course, there are a lot of other potentially nasty things on surfaces that are well worth sanitizing into oblivion.
I was happy for Atlanta. I'm a Freddie Freeman fan, and also Dansby Swanson. Swanson, in a place about as far from home as you can get from the Atlanta area, started in A ball as a Hillsboro Hop in Oregon. Those who saw him saw quickly he would be climbing the ladder. 2 HRs in the series, including last night, was fun to see. (And unlike many, I hold nothing against the Astros.)
Also, if the Giants couldn't get to the WS, best if its won by whomever beats the Dodgers.
If your rooting for Atlanta, knowing the ace has been lost to a broken leg, and also knowing what kind of offensive explosions Houston is capable of, it was certainly nerve-wracking. After what happened to Tampa last year, and in the era of pulling pitchers who are doing well in favor of a reliever you have no idea of what they will bring (history not withstanding), it should be clear that no run or game margin is safe as long as there are still outs to get.
Metta World Peace, the retired NBA player formerly known as Ron Artest, told MarketWatch he was ecstatic to hear that Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms. What is World Peace even up to these days? It’s actually pretty cool—he started a company whose app allows basketball players in underserved communities to book time at high-quality indoor courts.
Henry Ruggs III kills someone via drunk driving. Evidence was bad enough to the point where the Raiders released him like that.
Prayers up to the family who shouldn't be having to go through because of a dumbass decision by Ruggs. As a Raiders fan, I didn't want Ruggs for football reasons (wanted Ceedee) and this unfortunately proves me right in the wrong way. Just as he was coming around too. Can't have shit as a Raiders fan. What can go wrong will go wrong.
Former Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was driving 156 mph with a blood-alcohol content twice Nevada's legal limit before his car slammed into the rear of a vehicle that burned, killing a 23-year-old woman, according to prosecutors.
Ruggs had his initial court appearance Wednesday on felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and reckless driving that could get him up to 26 years in state prison if he is convicted. The Raiders released Ruggs late Tuesday, just hours after the crash, his hospitalization and his booking into a Las Vegas jail.
Prosecutors said Ruggs was traveling 156 mph two seconds before the crash and was at 127 mph when the air bags deployed in his vehicle. Judge Joe M. Bonaventure responded that he couldn't recall speeds that high involved in a crash during his career on the bench.
Honestly would have won that one year Carr was injured though. Ruggs aside, I'm pretty happy with where the Raiders are now - especially after dumping Gruden.
Bobcats beat the Red Hawks in a very entertaining Maction game. Late in the game, with the Red Hawks down by 15, they score a TD and then go for 2. DUMB, Dumb, dumb. They don't get and now are down 9 points.
Agreed. Go for 1, make it and you're still in striking distance at 8 down. But a 2-point conversion is necessary if you want to tie. Failure means that a FG is at least necessary to pull ahead by 1 or 2.
Yup. If I were a coach I wouldn't go for 2 until the 4th quarter (or maybe if I was down by a whole lot of points, at which point it probably doesn't matter).
I wish a lot of coaches could learn elementary probability and analytics. But high risk, low likelihood of success spectacular gambles are more exciting when they do work.
Or, restated just slightly differently - If you're within 2 scores you shouldn't go for 2 unless there's less than 5 minutes to go.
The other thing about strategy in terms of scores need to tie or take the lead I learned from John Madden. Just because you need a TD and a FG doesn't mean you should always go for broke by getting the TD first. An FG will do just fine if you need it. Then go for the TD next.
Will Plummer started 2020 as fourth string. Two of the three QBs ahead of him (including the starter) and the fifth string entered the transfer portal last season. He starts the 2021 season as an "AND" co-starter, but doesn't start so he's second string. And then get gets bumped down to third-string when a transfer passes him. Last month, the starting QB got injured. Then the transfer gets injured. He doesn't do great, so they start sharing reps w/ the Jamarye Joiner - who is a WR and was a sub-60% passer in HS. Joiner gets hurt. So now we have a guy who was essentially the last choice is now the starter. And if Plummer gets hurt, there are 3 walk-on freshmen QBs.
Really? I thought Kiffen got fired simply because the team grossly underperformed during his tenure and lost some high profile games.. which would more or less be the same as Helton, no? Sure you're not thinking Sark?
Well, as the resident Kremlinologist here: there's never been much question that Kiffin can coach, the question was his overall judgment and the stupid bullshit that came from the lack of it. He needed to not be the smart guy in the room & Saban was just about able to kick him around enough to make his point. Kiffin is always going to be a jackass but one who's better at the job.
Helton just can't coach, and he's not going to become a genius at either play calls or hiring playcallers. He's a really really nice guy. Parents are going to feel okay about turning their kids over to his pastoral care, and maybe he'll be okay in an environment where the competition is less... fierce. He's not coming back to the big time.
Actually think this might be a good outcome for all concerned. Fit has a lot to do with coaching success, and Clay and his preferred offensive style both seem to be better suited to the Sun Belt than the red-carpet belt.
MBB season starting up...what do we think is the outlook for the Bears? Who will surprise and either take the next step or be the new kid on the block.
Side Note: Nov.12th, Stanfurd comes to Santa Clara for MBB and I will be on play by play for KSCU 103.3 FM. Starting off with a local rival, especially since I know the team well from all the Pac 12 hoops I watch. Can't wait to get going.
As we discussed after the CSU LA, I'm on the Sam Alajiki hype train, big time, tho Fox could park Anyanwu & Alajiki on the bench bc they're true FR...fingers crossed that Jordan Shepherd can be somewhat efficient...I am in slight disagreement with Terence that Grant is actually a viable #1 option for any sort of competent basketball team, but we'll see...The O'Dowd kids are big time question marks...hopeful Kuany can figure things out a bit. Jared Hyder is not a P12 basketball player.
See if you can work a comment on Lars Thiemann into the Stanford/Santa Clara broadcast!
[FB] Wilcox says 2nd string Offensive Guard/Center Brian Driscoll out for the season with an upper body injury. Everett Johnson (RS-So) is next man up for OG. Bastian Swinney (Fr) next man up at Center.
No longer on football roster: Tarik Glenn Jr (Fr CB), Zane Cribb (Sr S), Parker Bosche (RS Jr, OLB), Alex Murray (RS-So, ILB), Jared Staub (RS-So, WR). Previously announced: Gentle Williams (RS-Sr OT, medical retirement), Curly Young Jr. (undisclosed). Added to roster: walk-on Jake Arguello (Fr, LS)
I've never heard of those players except two, and from football standpoint it doesn't matter at all, but I know they are all respected student athletes and I wish them well.
Imagine waking up at 5 am, getting shoved into the ground by a future NFL player on a daily basis, and having to go back into the stadium in the evening to repeat the process. Also while doing full-time school. And you're paying $30,000/year for that. Welcome to being a walk-on
As FS said, they're walk-ons and not even preferred walk-ons (except, I think, Tarik Glenn Jr). They do all the work of scholarship guys. Preferred walk-ons are the guys who have a good chance of getting a scholarship. Plain walk-ons are tackling dummies and GPA fluff. They end up quitting all the time because its a lot of work for almost no return.
Since the USC game starts at 12:30, around what time does the tailgate start in the lot next to Valley Sciences? Need to start planning an Amtrak/BART ride from Santa Clara.
Assuming VTA light rail is in service (I believe it is, but just not sure), you may be even better off taking light rail to either Berryessa or Milpitas and transferring to BART from there.
YES!!!! See you all there! We better F-ING take care of business at Tucson for the first time since the W administration...you absolutely know that game is gonna be a dogfight! Cats +12 is a good bet, unfortunately.
I just booked a flight up out of Santa Barbara, if for no other reason than to have a face-to-face conversation with Pa Newellbany to discuss in great detail all the ways his son has disappointed us over the years - see you then.
I enjoyed the doc “Untold: Malice at the Palace” on Netflix. Seemed pretty clear that neurodiversity was the spark that lit that, with predictable consequences.

Ron Artest was clearly not at fault. He went and laid down on the scorer's table to calm down!
Farewell, Buster.

Seems like it's hard for most pro athletes to go out on a high note.
wow...quite a surprise!
thinking about it more...maybe not. rebuilt his HoF rep last year, and was willing to sit out 2020. and I'm sure his knees aren't in great shape
Wonder if they'll hand the keys to Joey Bart or try and sign a FA.
Free (new) food at Public Market today. Rob and I are going soon! https://twitter.com/Public_Market/status/1455957354172731396
Alas, the Public Market tweet lied, and it was not free, but it was still a good day to go for a walk and get Indian food for lunch.

Bread Rankings
Greenlee's Blueberry Cinnamon...just delightful French Toast...even says so on the label.
All the Greenlee's selections are amazing.
Where's Monkey Bread? These rankings are FAKE without that option.
I guess y'all have never heard of this awesomeness; my mom didn't make it in a bundt pan, but this recipe seems about right:
https://www.melskitchencafe.com/buttery-pull-apart-bundt-bread/
Geez, thinking about this, probably haven't had it for 30+ years or so.
Monkey Bread is doused in cinnamon sugar that caramelizes into a syrup at the bottom of the pan though. Easiest thing on earth to make because it's just pieces of cut up biscuits from a tube. https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/recipes/a10982/monkey-bread/
Yeah, saw that, but that's not the way my mom made it - it was a dinner roll thing, not a breakfast thing.
You should conduct an experiment and report back.
I'll get my daughter on it right away.
1. Parker House
2. King's Hawaiian
3. Crusty French
4. WTF are butter rolls?
I'm not going to complain if you give me any of 1-3 with a plate of butter (needs to be unsalted for #3) to slather them with.
French dinner rolls.
i am not a fan of the "sweet" or soft ones. they should be hard and crusty and go well w/ a giant pile of butter.
Bread Rolls are good. Can't really go wrong.
I had to look up parker rolls, but now I know what the are (the soft buttery, kind of rectangle shaped bread invented in the Parker House Hotel Boston - I've definitely had them or something similar before)

I like Hesseman (esp WKRP...another one to check out somewhere). and Mr. Guillaume was great in Sports Night.
Oh is it the original Head of the Class? I saw something about it but didn't know if it was a reboot or the original.
Original series. Now that you mention it, I seem to recall hearing about a reboot a while back, but I'm not too sure.
I also loved Night Court, which will be my next target.
Night Court is the only long running, syndicated comedy I've seen every episode of. (Seinfeld would be close but I am certain I've missed some stuff in the last season - I know I haven't seen Puerto Rican day parade for example)
Looks like a reboot is planned but hasn't aired yet. The original was kind of soft rebooted when Billy Connolly replaced Hesseman in the lead role.
I'm kinda looking forward to watching that, with Bernadette from Big Bang Theory as Judge Stone's daughter.

Yes, Virginia has a primary system that allowed a more moderate candidate to get the nomination. Not all states have that.

It's all ball bearings nowadays
Virginia going with a GOP governor in a state where the republicans haven't won a large state election in like 14 years is concerning.
The VA Governor loss, I can mostly understand due to how it has historically flipped to the party that isn’t in the White House.
The real concerning race for me and which is causing alarm and red flags is the NJ governors race being so close.
NJ governors' race also usually goes against the Presidential result. Dems (probably) winning this one is actually against historical trends.
Again, these off-year elections are typically very tough for the President's party.
The off-off-year calendar gives the governor and members of the House of Delegates the option of running for a federal office (US Rep or US Senator) while still holding office. Or vice versa.
Theoretically at least, if you lose while holding office you haven't lost your office.
That's a good explanation for why, it's just that most states don't do it that way.
It is. Looks like the state House of Delegates may flip to slightly R also. I haven't read too much yet but Dems won urban and suburban but not as widely as they have recently. turnout matters!
It certainly does in urban areas but Dems have to do a better job in rural areas.

Thank god he didn’t get the jeopardy gig
I wonder if "immunized" is a way of referring to ivermectin.
Regardless, I have lost respect for Aaron Rodgers. "Immunized" without the benefit of a vaccination is nonsense.
i wonder what this "alternate treatment" is that makes him "immunized" ??
Already got covid I assume.
Nah, looks like it's some hippie shit.

just read that. I've lost so much respect for him
Were he a mere mortal, he might face disciplinary action at work.
He might still face disciplinary action from the NFL or the Packers. But it would require that the Packers are forced to forfeit a game, I think.
Really? Holy Cow.
WTF
That's the Butte College part of him
pqtm
ok, what does "pqtm" mean? i've been wondering for a while. google isnt very helpful on this.
Pringle quietly to myself.
Pringle, in honor of former Cal stud Lol Pringle.
ah, thanks!
I guess the vaccine for kids 5-11 will be made available at last...
Approved in Oregon, and enough to vaccinate ~50% of the kids in the 5-11 range available the next day. We shall see how long it takes to get some people to realize being healthy is better than not for kids. It has been more strongly supported by the 12-17 set than some of their own parents.
Dr. Ms. Newellbany is wasting no time - got our kids an appointment TODAY.
Outstanding.
Good move,
Do you still sanitize surfaces more than pre-Covid?
I never did it.
Hell no. The scientific evidence doesn't support doing this at all.
I have never sanitized surfaces, pre- or post/during-Covid.
Don't the kitchen counters and stove top get a little grimy after a while? Or do you have someone who takes care of this for you?
Well, I mean, they're clean, but I don't disinfect anything. Little vinegar/water/smidge of soap solution is all you need to keep surfaces non-grimy.
No. Easier to clean my hands before they reach my face, for one thing, even when it's not a question of dealing with an airborne disease.
Nope, I always thought that was goofy.
Not usually. But like dcblue said, if there is a wipe where the carts are I'll use it.
The one thing I did do on my flights the last couple of weeks is that United hands out little wipes and I used them on the arm rests and the tray. AA didn't hand them out on my one AA flight.
Just because it's convenient, I still usually grab a wipe and clean off the handle on the basket or cart I use at the grocery store. Otherwise, no.
Not really, especially after more and more research showed minimal effects of surfaces as disease vectors.
Until I got vaccinated, I used to sanitize my hands every time I got back in my car.
i never really sanitized surfaces, just used hand sanitizer a bunch early on in coronavirus times. i still use hand sanitizer if it is publicly available, but not all the time at all
my takes is that it is airborne and that is mainly how people are getting it and the surfaces are very unlikely 2nd order effect ...

Choppers beat the Cheaters.
The Dodgers have lost to the WS champs for something like the last 5 WS. 2021 Braves. 2019 Nats. 2018 Red Sox. 2017 Cheaters. 2016 Cubs.

I was mildly rooting for Dusty Baker to win, but meh. The games were not all that exciting either.

Henry Ruggs III drove 156 mph seconds before fatal car crash, prosecutors say

JFC that man's going to jail jail.
Probably for a long time.
up to 20 years apparently. Oy
There's likely no plea deal to be found here either. He's doing hard time....
That's terrible but how is he even okay.
LOL "Can't have shit as a Raiders fan."
Bro, your team is 5-2 and in 1st place in the AFC West. Simmer down.
They haven't won a playoff game since Rich Gannon was the QB, though.

This seems simple to me.
Agreed. Go for 1, make it and you're still in striking distance at 8 down. But a 2-point conversion is necessary if you want to tie. Failure means that a FG is at least necessary to pull ahead by 1 or 2.
Don't go for 2 until absolutely necessary. I wish Wilcox knew this.
Yes I agree with the FG/TD point. I just mean don't go chasing points early. See TCU
Arizona QB Jamarye Joiner wildcat QB/WR out for Cal game with knee injury.
Wow, that's their third QB injury in the last month. Joiner tossed a long TD for Arizona's first score of the game last week.
Apropos: current starting QB Will Plummer is unrelated to Jake Plummer.
And if Plummer gets hurt, there are 3 walk-on freshmen QBs.
itfWill was related to Jake that'd be kinda like the Garbers boys playing for in-state rivals.

I don't wish the man ill, he was in the wrong job at SC. If GA Southern thinks he's got something to offer, good luck to all involved.
They got fired for vastly different reasons, isn't really comparable.
Really? I thought Kiffen got fired simply because the team grossly underperformed during his tenure and lost some high profile games.. which would more or less be the same as Helton, no? Sure you're not thinking Sark?
See DC's comment below.
minus the being groomed by Nick Saban part. What could go wrong?
FYI you don't have to keep typing out GoBears49. We know who you are Bob
We're going to have to come up with a Cal phrase or player that TD_24 has to work into each broadcast.
The band is on the court!
Good luck with that game!

[FB] Wilcox says 2nd string Offensive Guard/Center Brian Driscoll out for the season with an upper body injury. Everett Johnson (RS-So) is next man up for OG. Bastian Swinney (Fr) next man up at Center.
Go Bears...Bear Down on those 'Cats.
Is there any reason for these roster changes? Guys quitting because lack of playing time or is it something else like academics?
Imagine waking up at 5 am, getting shoved into the ground by a future NFL player on a daily basis, and having to go back into the stadium in the evening to repeat the process. Also while doing full-time school. And you're paying $30,000/year for that. Welcome to being a walk-on
almost all of those are walk ons.
Wouldn't CalTrain/BART be easier? Take the baby bullet up to Millbrae and switch over to Richmond BART.
Assuming VTA light rail is in service (I believe it is, but just not sure), you may be even better off taking light rail to either Berryessa or Milpitas and transferring to BART from there.
Follow Twist on Twitter - he'll start posting about it on Friday. My best guess is 10am, but g.oso might be around later to confirm.
