"Buster Posey, a seven-time All-Star catcher and common denominator to three World Series championships, has decided to retire instead of extending his career with the Giants.

Posey, 34, had a club option for $22 million that the Giants needed to exercise by Sunday, but the news broke Wednesday afternoon, initially by The Athletic, that the decorated and respected player would step aside from the game despite coming off a successful season."

After the hubbub about parental leave and the explosion of school-borne COVID cases in August/September, it's incredible that the Democrats have yet again fumbled away an easy political win. It would be so easy to proclaim themselves as the party of family values: keeping kids safe, making it easier to take care of newborns, and all the stuff in the Build Back Better plan about universal pre-K, child tax credits, etc.

Expand full comment

Virginia going with a GOP governor in a state where the republicans haven't won a large state election in like 14 years is concerning.

Expand full comment

Not as much as people seem to think. The VA governor's race always goes to the party that doesn't hold the presidency. Not sure why people expected that to change this year. Even the amount of the swing is not abnormal for their historical voting pattern.

Expand full comment

Yeah, VA governor's elections are weird. They term-limit everyone out of running for re-election (in consecutive terms) and they always hold them during an off-year (so not during a Presidental or Congressional election year).

Expand full comment

The VA Governor loss, I can mostly understand due to how it has historically flipped to the party that isn’t in the White House.

The real concerning race for me and which is causing alarm and red flags is the NJ governors race being so close.

Expand full comment

NJ governors' race also usually goes against the Presidential result. Dems (probably) winning this one is actually against historical trends.

Again, these off-year elections are typically very tough for the President's party.

Expand full comment

The off-off-year calendar gives the governor and members of the House of Delegates the option of running for a federal office (US Rep or US Senator) while still holding office. Or vice versa.

Theoretically at least, if you lose while holding office you haven't lost your office.

Expand full comment

That's a good explanation for why, it's just that most states don't do it that way.

Expand full comment

It is. Looks like the state House of Delegates may flip to slightly R also. I haven't read too much yet but Dems won urban and suburban but not as widely as they have recently. And Repubs won all the rural areas as they normally do. Rodgers, 37, had an alternate treatment prior to the start of training camp, sources told ESPN, and he then petitioned the NFL for that treatment to allow him to be considered the same as someone who received one of the approved vaccinations. After a lengthy back-and-forth, the league ruled that Rodgers would not get the same consideration and would be considered unvaccinated.

Sources said Rodgers follows masking protocols while interacting with players and coaches inside the team's headquarters at Lambeau Field. However, Rodgers does not wear a mask while in the media auditorium during his weekly and postgame news conferences. The Packers have put other unvaccinated players on Zoom instead of at in-person media sessions.

Do you still sanitize surfaces more than pre-Covid?

Expand full comment

Hell no. The scientific evidence doesn't support doing this at all.

Expand full comment

No. I had a brief flurry of sanitizing surfaces at work when it wasn't clear if transmission via surface contamination was a possibility. But since mid-April 2020, not so much.

Expand full comment

If I'm eating at my desk, like I am right now (tomato and chicken soup from the capitol's cafeteria), I'll use one of those Clorox wipes afterwards. More to clean up the crumbs (in this case, the oyster crackers) than for any sanitizing properties.

I have never sanitized surfaces, pre- or post/during-Covid.

Expand full comment

Don't the kitchen counters and stove top get a little grimy after a while? Or do you have someone who takes care of this for you?

Expand full comment

Well, I mean, they're clean, but I don't disinfect anything. Little vinegar/water/smidge of soap solution is all you need to keep surfaces non-grimy.

Expand full comment

No. Easier to clean my hands before they reach my face, for one thing, even when it's not a question of dealing with an airborne disease.

Expand full comment

Nope, I always thought that was goofy.

Expand full comment

Not usually. But like dcblue said, if there is a wipe where the carts are I'll use it.

The one thing I did do on my flights the last couple of weeks is that United hands out little wipes and I used them on the arm rests and the tray. AA didn't hand them out on my one AA flight.

Just because it's convenient, I still usually grab a wipe and clean off the handle on the basket or cart I use at the grocery store. Otherwise, no.

Expand full comment
author

Not really, especially after more and more research showed minimal effects of surfaces as disease vectors.

Until I got vaccinated, I used to sanitize my hands every time I got back in my car.

Expand full comment

i never really sanitized surfaces, just used hand sanitizer a bunch early on in coronavirus times. i still use hand sanitizer if it is publicly available, but not all the time at all

my takes is that it is airborne and that is mainly how people are getting it and the surfaces are very unlikely 2nd order effect ...

Expand full comment

Still using hand sanitizer more than usual. There is a pump dispenser sitting in the door of the truck, so its quick and easy. But also agree, I think the vast amount of transmission is airborne, not picked up off surfaces. Of course, there are a lot of other potentially nasty things on surfaces that are well worth sanitizing into oblivion.

Former Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was driving 156 mph with a blood-alcohol content twice Nevada's legal limit before his car slammed into the rear of a vehicle that burned, killing a 23-year-old woman, according to prosecutors.

Ruggs had his initial court appearance Wednesday on felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and reckless driving that could get him up to 26 years in state prison if he is convicted. The Raiders released Ruggs late Tuesday, just hours after the crash, his hospitalization and his booking into a Las Vegas jail.

Prosecutors said Ruggs was traveling 156 mph two seconds before the crash and was at 127 mph when the air bags deployed in his vehicle. Judge Joe M. Bonaventure responded that he couldn't recall speeds that high involved in a crash during his career on the bench.

This seems simple to me.

Agreed. Go for 1, make it and you're still in striking distance at 8 down. But a 2-point conversion is necessary if you want to tie. Failure means that a FG is at least necessary to pull ahead by 1 or 2.

Don't go for 2 until absolutely necessary. I wish Wilcox knew this.

Will Plummer started 2020 as fourth string. Two of the three QBs ahead of him (including the starter) and the fifth string entered the transfer portal last season. He starts the 2021 season as an "AND" co-starter, but doesn't start so he's second string. And then get gets bumped down to third-string when a transfer passes him. Last month, the starting QB got injured. Then the transfer gets injured. He doesn't do great, so they start sharing reps w/ the Jamarye Joiner - who is a WR and was a sub-60% passer in HS. Joiner gets hurt. So now we have a guy who was essentially the last choice is now the starter. And if Plummer gets hurt, there are 3 walk-on freshmen QBs.

As we discussed after the CSU LA, I'm on the Sam Alajiki hype train, big time, tho Fox could park Anyanwu & Alajiki on the bench bc they're true FR...fingers crossed that Jordan Shepherd can be somewhat efficient...I am in slight disagreement with Terence that Grant is actually a viable #1 option for any sort of competent basketball team, but we'll see...The O'Dowd kids are big time question marks...hopeful Kuany can figure things out a bit. Jared Hyder is not a P12 basketball player.

See if you can work a comment on Lars Thiemann into the Stanford/Santa Clara broadcast!

We're going to have to come up with a Cal phrase or player that TD_24 has to work into each broadcast.

No longer on football roster: Tarik Glenn Jr (Fr CB), Zane Cribb (Sr S), Parker Bosche (RS Jr, OLB), Alex Murray (RS-So, ILB), Jared Staub (RS-So, WR). Previously announced: Gentle Williams (RS-Sr OT, medical retirement), Curly Young Jr. (undisclosed). Added to roster: walk-on Jake Arguello (Fr, LS)

I've never heard of those players except two, and from football standpoint it doesn't matter at all, but I know they are all respected student athletes and I wish them well.

Is there any reason for these roster changes? Guys quitting because lack of playing time or is it something else like academics?

Imagine waking up at 5 am, getting shoved into the ground by a future NFL player on a daily basis, and having to go back into the stadium in the evening to repeat the process. Also while doing full-time school. And you're paying $30,000/year for that. Welcome to being a walk-on

almost all of those are walk ons.

As FS said, they're walk-ons and not even preferred walk-ons (except, I think, Tarik Glenn Jr). They do all the work of scholarship guys. Preferred walk-ons are the guys who have a good chance of getting a scholarship. Plain walk-ons are tackling dummies and GPA fluff. They end up quitting all the time because its a lot of work for almost no return.

Since the USC game starts at 12:30, around what time does the tailgate start in the lot next to Valley Sciences? Need to start planning an Amtrak/BART ride from Santa Clara.

Wouldn't CalTrain/BART be easier? Take the baby bullet up to Millbrae and switch over to Richmond BART.

Assuming VTA light rail is in service (I believe it is, but just not sure), you may be even better off taking light rail to either Berryessa or Milpitas and transferring to BART from there.

YES!!!! See you all there! We better F-ING take care of business at Tucson for the first time since the W administration...you absolutely know that game is gonna be a dogfight! Cats +12 is a good bet, unfortunately.

I just booked a flight up out of Santa Barbara, if for no other reason than to have a face-to-face conversation with Pa Newellbany to discuss in great detail all the ways his son has disappointed us over the years - see you then.
