Oh Wow! I've been backpacking in that area a few times. West of Serene Creek, which drains Serene lakes, is Palisades Creek and Palisades Creek trail which leads down the Royal Gorge and one of the most spectacular stretches of River Canyon I've ever seen. Never been attacked by otters out there, though!

Have you ever been stopped by law enforcement?

Stopped once by Berkeley PD for open container (not arrested, just had to pour it out) and arrested by Hong Kong PD for a crime I didn't commit. Spent the afternoon in handcuffs. And the time the cops showed up at a under-aged house party doesn't count because I escaped detention by jumping over the back fence and through the neighbor's yard

Flew from Ketchikan to Denver for fire assignment on incident team. Rented car to Steamboat Springs. Not used to higher speed un-impeded driving in late model car vs old pickup. Trooper pulled me over for going 90 on long downhill grade. I “explained” and got a warning.

My brother, a friend, and I once used a hunger walkathon as a training run. The finish was near the boathouse at Lake Merritt. Near the end we cut across in the middle of the street. An Oakland cop stopped us and lectured us on jaywalking. This was early on a Sunday morning when there was no traffic around.

Expand full comment

Jaywalking laws are, by definition, pro-automobile justifications for lessening driver responsibility for pedestrian death and injury.

Once when I was 19 I was stopped for hitchhiking illegally and once when I was 21 I was stopped by UC campus police for open container. No arrests though.

CAL

On this day in 2007 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 20-17. The win broke Cal’s three-game losing streak and raised their record to 6-3, they would not win again until the Armed Forces Bowl on December 31st. Statistical leaders for Cal were QB Nate Longshore who hit on 26 of 39 passes for 213 yards, RB Justin Forsett with 32 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns and WR Lavelle Hawkins who caught nine passes for 78 yards. Forsett had seemingly iced the game with a 44 yard touchdown run with 2:42 remaining but the Cougs got a TD and two point conversation in the game’s waning moments. Cal recovered the ensuing onside kick.

DBD celebrates 100 years of football in Strawberry Canyon with this daily feature appearing throughout the football season.

Expand full comment

One of the more depressing wins of that era. WSU was not good and Cal should have blown them out, but Longshore couldn't complete a pass further than about 10 yards due to his gimpy ankle. The whole game was a grind.

Franklin TN mayoral candidate Gabrielle Hanson (R) blamed her 3:1 ratio loss in election to incumbent Ken Moore (R) on election fraud. I am sure her loss wasn't caused by her refusing to renounce support from neo-nazi groups, using white supremacists to keep reporters from attending open candidate forums, using the same white supremacists to vandalize the reporter's office, stealing someone's Facebook page image to claim they were supporters of her campaign, her past guilty plea to promoting prostitution in 1990, and her letter to the Nashville Airport hating them for promoting Juneteenth. She seems nice.

After watching many of the division series and championship series games, I watched a grand total of maybe 30 minutes of the World Series. I don't care at all about Texas or Arizona, so I had no interest

Expand full comment

I really enjoyed this world series. The games were high scoring and snappily paced. I didn't care who won. Marcus Semien is incredibly hot.

Also enjoyed this World Series. I rooted for Texas because of Bruce Bochy.

That is all.

I thought it was entertaining. Disappointing, since I was rooting for Arizona, mostly because of knowing Ryan Thompson, and its always nice when a kid from the neighborhood goes on to play in the World Series.

Let's check in on Jermaine Terry II. He's caught 2 passes for 10 yards and participated in 8 games. Last year at Cal, he had 7 catches for 41 yards for the whole season. I have no idea if his great vs missed blocked ratio has changed.

Yes. And I've probably told this story on the DBD before.

Boy Scout Troop 7 in Berkeley, sold Christmas wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces to help fund summer camp on Sawmill Lake in Placer County. Troop 7 had weekly meetings in the basement of St. Clements Episcopal Church near the Hotel Claremont. On the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving 1972, my patrol went to a part of Oakland not far from the church. We fanned out and went door knocking to make sales. We were driven there in a Checker Marathon by a parent, so we could get the entire patrol (6 boys) in the car without a problem. About 20 minutes into our foray, I was stopped by Oakland PD for soliciting after 6 pm without a permit. The entire patrol was rounded up, taken down to the nearest police station, booked and released back to our parents. Seems that one grouchy neighbor had called the cops to demand putting an end to our sales pitches.

We got mentioned in a Herb Caen column soon thereafter and were less than minor celebrities within Troop 7 for less than a minute.
