Speeding tickets

None. If I'm in a gaggle of cars going 80, I'd be the first to get pulled over (cops would definitely target my red Subaru WRX over a minivan or something more subdued). That's extra incentive to keep my speeds civilized and relatively lawful.

One, when I was 16, for going 70 coming down the hill on 92 at 2AM on Thanksgiving night.

I have been pulled over one other time, going easily 92 on I-5 about 10 miles north of Buttonwillow, but I had on a sundress and a nice smile and I admitted I was going fast but I had no idea how fast, and I got a fixit ticket for not having updated my registration sticker on my car (the registration was current, I just hadn't put it on), and nothing at all for the speeding.

Expand full comment

I feel like a sundress and a nice smile is a key to getting out of a ticket. Unfortunately I don't think I look good in a sundress...

I stopped counting. Been stopped for speeding 10+ times and got ticket about half the time.

Expand full comment

I've only received one, heading north on the GW parkway just south of Arlington. The Park Police were just waving people over and handing out tickets. I was briefly tempted to challenge it based on their "eyeball" standard but didn't because 1) the fine was only $50, and 2) I was going 10 mph faster than the ticket said. I assume they knew most people would have the same reaction - I mean what was I going to do, go to court and say "this ticket is bullshit, I was going 55 in a 35?"

3 speeders plus a moving violation…speed in California (‘92), New York (‘00) and Mississippi (‘20), plus the nasty red light violation at 7th Street and Bell in f-ing Phoenix (‘18).

SHOULD have gotten a really bad, all-encompassing ticket (speeding, following too closely, etc) near Telluride, CO on my road trip to MT last May. The cop inexplicably let me off with a warning…absolutely baffling.

I was riding my aunts sea doo on the river and was coming into a lagoon off of the river and apparently it was a no wake zone for boats, jet skis and sea doos. I wasn’t going fast in the lagoon but was coming in fast and water crafts don’t have breaks. Unfortunately the rangers or police or whatever they were happened to be there and stopped me and issued me a ticket for creating wakes.

$250 dollars and this was in Arizona.

I've had 4? I think. First was on Highway 4 between Hercules and Martinez. Was talking with my ex and wasn't paying attention to my speed and didn't notice CHP on the onramp. One was on the way back from the Tennessee game in either Northern Tennessee or southern Ky. Came up over a hump and the state trooper was sitting at the bottom with his laser pointed up the hill. My detector immediately went off so I just slowed down and pulled over. I think I got caught 85 in a 75 or something like that. Not outrageously fast given there was a huge truck all in Tennessee orange that passed me going at least 90-95.

Expand full comment

the fastest i ever got caught for was about 92 mph

i had accelerated to pass someone near an on/off ramp in NC (or maybe VA). i was mostly just going about 85 mph but bad timing w/ the cop in just the moment i was going maximally fast.

most of the time i drive pretty normal speeds, especially living in a heavily congested area.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has urged the 32 nations preparing for the most political World Cup in the modern era to focus on the game in Qatar and avoid handing out lessons in morality.

A letter imploring teams to "let football take center stage" was sent by Infantino and FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura ahead of intense media focus on coaches and players when World Cup squads are announced next week.

"Please, let's now focus on the football!" Infantino and Samoura wrote, asking the 32 competing federations to "not allow football to be dragged into every ideological or political battle that exists."

SAN DIEGO – Cal women's tennis sophomores Katja Wiersholm and Jessica Alsola defeated the nation's third-ranked doubles team in the consolation bracket of the ITA National Fall Championships on Thursday evening, as the Golden Bears upended Wake Forest's Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth, 7-6(3), 6-1, at the Barnes Tennis Center.

The Bears' win over the Demon Deacons – who won the doubles title at the 2021 ITA All-American Championships – evened the season series between the two pairs, who met earlier this fall in the 2022 ITA All-American Championships. In that Oct. 5 match, the Bears fell to the Wake pair, 6-2, 7-5, in the main draw round of 32.

Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by Enron.

Tom Holmoe had a better record (3-2) against U$C than either Pappy Waldorf (3-7) or Jeff Tedford (1-10).

Joe Kapp (3-2) Roger Theder (2-2) and Keith Gilbertston (2-2) all had better records in Big Games than Bruce Snyder (0-5*) or Mike White (2-4).

(Meanwhile Andy Smith lost only once in a combined sixteen games against U$C and Furd.)

*Technically Snyder was 0-4-1 but because in the event of a tie the Axe would remain with whoever possessed it, for purposes of this exercise a tie counts as a loss.

Cal trivia fun fact appears on DBD every Tuesday and Thursday during the football seasons except for this week when there was no Thursday DBD.
