Big Game week. Lets get it. Still figuring out tickets. Where does everyone usually sit in that stadium? Also is there a tailgate, I will be there as well, whether it be on Caltrain from the peninsula from home or from campus 25 minutes down. Looking forward to my first big game.

Cugel's avatar

I sit near the Cal section, on the upper deck, as close to the "A" row as possible.

TD_24's avatar

Are you going to be at the tailgate as well?

g.oso's avatar

there's a large group of us in sec 118. There will be our regular tailgate which we're combining with another tailgate, plus 1-2 more cooks bringing their own grills. Probably setting up close to 11am. We're expecting somewhere between 50-60 people, possibly more. Will drop a pin on google maps and tweet it out (@CasaDeHank)

TD_24's avatar

Good to hear. Will look out for the pin and hope to see some of you there.

Cugel's avatar

Remember when the NFL threatened to sue us for daring to use the Big Game to describe our annual tradition?

GoldenSD81's avatar

I never heard about this but Cal should have licensed it to them for a nice amount to help fund our football program.

Justbear's avatar

Never heard of it. What happened?

Cugel's avatar

Actually, nothing came of it. The Big Game as been around a lot longer than the NFL.

Kraft Mac and Cheese (or Box Dinner for Canadians)

Add in ground up hot italian sausage!

GoldenSD81's avatar

Or just diced up regular hot dogs.

FiatSlug's avatar

Mrs Slug makes a mac & cheese that's very, vert good. Elbow macaroni is typically sued; penne is sometimes substituted.

I love it with a sharp cheddar, diced ham, and topped with panko bread crumbs.

Berkelium97's avatar

Meh. Mac and cheese doesn't do much for me, not even a well crafted mac and cheese dish from a good bbq place.

AndyPanda's avatar

The added ingredients make all the difference. I agree, plain mac and cheese I can do without, but with the right additions, it can become great.

SGBear's avatar

Maccheroni in Italian is a generic term to mean any tubular pasta. Macaroni in English (pronounced essentially the same) is almost always "elbow" macaroni - but Kraft uses straight tubes.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

overall yes.

in grad school it was something of a staple, but i would add ground meat and veggies to make it a one pot meal.

the mountain house chili mac is also particularly good, especially on a backpacking trip.

TheScientist019's avatar

Is this a nostalgia thing? I don't think I ever ate it as a kid, so I bought a box as an adult and it was a completely forgettable experience.

Terence's avatar

Probably. For me it's one of the first things I learned how to "cook" on my own - this and chili dogs. Plus I would always add stuff like spam or hot dogs into it - it's a different experience for me than making a roux based béchamel sauce for my actual mac and cheese.

clapdoc's avatar

I'm working on a theory of life thing (clearly, still in the beginning stage of development). It is the Ketchup Theory of Life. In other words, there are roughly three stages of life - where one initially loves ketchup (young child), where one thinks they are too good for ketchup (young to middle age adult), and where one remembers that ketchup is actually pretty great (older adult).

Obviously, it doesn't have to be ketchup and the age ranges are fluid. I'm still giving it thought.

clapdoc's avatar

My wife's friends' daughter loves it, so whenever she came over to visit (before they moved to Austin), we would always stock some Kraft M&C for her.

I'm not a fan of mac and cheese otherwise.

Cugel's avatar

What a wide range of goofy opinions, it's a side dish! Homemade is better!

Tangtpt's avatar

Only the Deluxe box of Kraft mac and cheese. It comes with "liquid" cheese sauce. The best!

Go Eat A Taco's avatar

Will not eat anything w/ a Kraft label. My buddy's wife makes homemade mac & cheese, which I will eat.

FiatSlug's avatar

My paternal grandmother would make French Toast and melt a slice of Velveeta in between two slices. With margarine and artificial maple syrup.

I haven't had anything like it in about 36 years. But it always makes me smile to remember it.

Terence's avatar

I just bought 5 boxes, even though I'm trying to use up everything in my kitchen

TD_24's avatar

My dad used to make it pretty much once a week once I got home from school for dinner. Loved it and still do. Will ask for some when I'm on thanksgiving and winter break.

Crab > Lobster > Shrimp > Clam > Oyster > ... [everything else] > octopus / tire abandoned in the ocean [tie]

clapdoc's avatar

I'm trying to make a conscious effort to reduce mammal meat in my diet in favor of poultry, reduce land animal meat in favor of seafood, and reduce top-of-the-food-chain seafood in favor of sardines, shrimp, etc.

Terence's avatar

tbb doesn't eat land animals.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I take it you’re a big supporter of PETA’s move to ban the world “bullpen” from baseball? ;-)

clapdoc's avatar

Not a fan of PETA on principle, but their suggestion for a new term ("arm barn") is not bad.

g.oso's avatar

scallop > octopus > crab > oyster > mussels > lobster > crawfish > clam > shrimp

Terence's avatar

crab is my #1 and lobster is my last. There's some cases to be made for stuff like razor clams (high)

clapdoc's avatar

What is the additive that should be avoided when shopping for scallops?

dr octopus ... was of my nicknames in my basketball playing days. i had few offensive skills but seemingly endless number of long arms on defense.

I love octopus cooked in many ways, but my favorite is raw sashimi. It's hard to find raw since most are already boiled but the really fresh ones are so good.

Terence's avatar

I tried the korean style octopus sashimi where it's killed and then immediately served. Not that great. I much preferred the beef tartare with apples.

I watched The Harder They Fall and I enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes westerns.

Cugel's avatar

Saw Shang-Chi this weekend, didn't think it was all that good. The wife and daughter liked it well enough, but I found it kinda weightless. Parts were good, but the whole didn't do much for me.

g.oso's avatar

I liked it. Being a fan of kung fu films in general, there were a lot of nods to the great old Hong Kong action movies of the 60s and 70s all the way up to more modern films, especially those from Shaw Brother's studios and the Golden Lotus. It was a fun trip to see those connections

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Watched & enjoyed the first two episodes of Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount +...I’m a big Taylor Sheridan fan.

It was a good, Thai-themed weekend at the Bk97 household

Friday: pineapple-bacon-curry fried rice (I was skeptical, but it all worked quite well together)

Saturday: pad see ew and two pork bellies: one smoked, one oven-roasted and crispy (moo grob)

Sunday: pho with the previous day's pork bellies

Now we have a fridge full of leftovers for some great lunches this week

heyalumnigo's avatar

Love pad see ew. Similar to Chow Fun, but a bit sweeter due to the sweeter Thai soy sauce.

Rob's mom taught us how to make kimchi and bulgogi, but because I initially thought we would also be prepping things, I didn't take notes. So, instead I just watched Rob's mom do everything, and then I ate delicious food.

Grilled spicy Molinari, then roasted with the veggies for a ragu served over egg noddles. 2010 Caprili Brunello (so good). My daughter made pear upside down cake with whipped cream for afters.

And he played 4 quarters in the rain without a single fumble! The run game really bailed out that flailing pass offense. It also looked like Jared was nursing some sort of rib/abdominal injury.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

watched part of this game. but it was excruciatingly boring.

at some point in the 4th Q, Goff had less than 50 total passing yards.

Cugel's avatar

I watched some of this, his "receivers" lack the ability to get open.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

There’s a severe lack of receiver talent in DET.

Justbear's avatar

Poor guy stuck in Detroit. But his play is not helping either. I think next year he will be replaced and will either retire or be a journey man. First pick overall rarely become a journey man so we might not see much of Goff anymore.

Terence's avatar

Lots of mediocre overall first picks - looking right now Jameis Winston, Sam Bradford, JaMarcus Russell, David Carr, Courtney Brown, Tim Couch, Ki-Jana Carter, Dan Wilkinson, Drew Bledsoe, Jeff George.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I doubt he retires, more than likely becomes a career backup and journeyman QB.

Justbear's avatar

My fantasy team is 2-7 and am starting boom or bust DeSean Jackson every week now because I have nothing to lose. My league is set up to award big plays.

Cugel's avatar

Yesterday I learned that my wife now actively roots against the Packers due to A. Rodgers's antics.

Cugel's avatar

2-0 Suck it, Mexico! You lose three times in a year to rising soccer power, and think we aspire to be you? Fuck no.

sycasey's avatar

Having Pulisic and McKinnie back immediately pays dividends. No reason this team shouldn't sail to qualification.

clapdoc's avatar

Well now the USMNT is going to lose to Jamaica by 3 tomorrow.

Embarrassing Stanford twice in one weekend? Allow me to introduce the Santa Clara Broncos. Embarrassed MBB 88-72 in a ROCKING Leavey Center that I was glad to be apart of. We were beating them so bad that even Avinash had a look on twitter. Cal vs Stanford basketball might actually end up being the most beautiful car crash I've ever seen.

Highlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjrGpj5QHns

Then there's the matter of the 1st round of the NCAA Women's Soccer tournament. First off I want to tell the committee to go suck one because who has the #12 and #20 teams go at it in the 64 team field in the first round. Terrible decision. Secondly, Stanford outpossessed us like 1000-1 on the day so thank God we made due with out chances in the 2nd half. Our goalie saved a penalty in a 2nd half that very clearly showed that the head ref (who was a pos) was on Stanford's pay roll (color me shocked). Never granted injury time when there was no advantage with SCU players down, called touch fouls and a PK when SCU was getting assaulted with no calls. Head ref was a joke and deserved to get taken to the back alley. Thankfully we won 1-0, and face Georgetown on Friday.

Cheers to Stanford losing! Santa Clara set us up, now its on Cal to take us home!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Stanford beats this Cal team by 10.

dcblue's avatar

Georgetown is the seeded team in the next bubble of four teams so a good chance the game will be here. Have to see what the weather will be like.

SGBear's avatar

Oh shit, FS is going to be in a FOUL mood this week.

Kansas - a 31 point underdog that was missing their starting QB - obliges Texas as much as possible to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory during the 4th quarter with a tie at the end of regulation. Kansas ends up winning in OT as they go for 2 to win rather than kick the XP. Not only was the catch by walk-on Jared Casey his career first, it was the first time he ever saw the field because of injuries ahead of him.

I guessed the Sark era at Texas would under deliver, but man, he has not off to a good start. It's fascinating how Texas just can't get it together post-Mac Brown.

It is amazing that Texas can’t get it together. Perhaps they have too much institutional support.

I'd love to see it go on forever. We'll see if they have buy-out fatigue. I'd bet not.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Do you think they would really fire Sark after one season? That would be peak Texas if they did but I imagine Sark will get one more season to show progress.

I'm still kind surprised the Herman hire didn't work out (and switching sports, Shaka too). I was so bummed, cause it felt like a slam dunk hire to me at the time. They are definitely the cautionary tale for throwing a boatload of cash at a hire.

PawlOski's avatar

Not arguing that they will, but I wouldn't be totally surprised if they made a move either depending on how these last few games go. He's at least already on a pretty hot seat.
