I have been to random places in Naples and New York and Chicago and it is tempting to pick one of them because they are exotic and inaccessible from where I am sitting here in SF, but honestly Tony’s, Delfina, and Zero Zero are as good as those places.
The great thing about pizza is that there are so many kinds and varieties to go around. Everyone should eat pizza all of the time.
I'm not usually one for deep dish pizza but there's a place called Sicilia's in Providence (on Atwells Ave on Federal Hill, which used to be a serious "little Italy kind of neighborhood"), which just makes great deep dish. Also the sort of place where you used to see some guys just hanging around, not doing much of anything, you know, just in case.
It was a place somewhere in midtown Manhattan. Just a standard greasy slice of pepperoni that I had to fold in half to insert into my pizza hole. Wasn't fancy or expensive. But it was a perfect Manhattan slice - crust, sauce, toppings. God, I wish I could remember where it was, but I still hold in my mind's eye as the benchmark that every other slice is measured against.
Ocean. The immensity and emptiness of the endless water, the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. It’s calming and a kind of metaphor for existence that I enjoy. Also reminds me of growing up in Monterey. The mountains are cool too though, could see different folks reasonably going either way. Of course in CA we are blessed with both, which is really pretty amazing.
I guess mountains? The DC area is the furthest I've ever lived from the sea, but between my wife's total lack of interest in the ocean (thanks to growing up in the midwest and spending countless summers in Vermont), and my lack of interest in boardwalk beach towns, I've kind of lost touch with the ocean by default.
Ocean. The funny thing is that I hate living near the ocean, but I love visiting. I hate ocean beaches that are too cold, rough, crowded, or rocky. I get seasick easily, so I don't go on the ocean. But the ocean speaks to me. I don't know what it is - but I'm hypnotized by its power and beauty.
Oceans by boundless nautical miles. The highway to every land on earth, can be still as a pond one day and deadly powerful and angry the next. Contains more mysteries and undiscovered creatures than we will ever know. The birthplace of all life on earth and the primary driver of almost every weather pattern around the globe. You can chill on sandy beaches and admire its beauty, jump in and feel weightless, surf the breaking waves, sail across its seas to foreign lands and pull almost all your nutrients from its waters.
I recall an old I Love Lucy episode where she and Ethyl were gyrating over Ricki's next band gig on the road, wondering where. Climaxing at the end where Ricki announces...."it is in Del.... Mar, Calee-fornia" and they both gasp.
Mountains. I find them to be peaceful and serene. Living in MD is the first time in my life I've lived somewhere where I cannot see mountains on a daily basis, but there's enough varied elevation to make the landscape interesting. That's a big contrast to a place like Florida, which I find to be uncomfortably flat.
mountain without a doubt for me. in fact i am generally happiest when i can see the mountains or be around them on a daily basis. it is always my first choice for a vacation destination.
while i am not religious, there is something "spiritual" about the mountains for me. a nice connection to past and future since they are enduring yet changing.
Mt favorite days on the water in LA are immediately after a winter storm. All the pollution is cleared out and you are graced with snow capped mountains as the backdrop for a beautiful day on the water. If the snow level drops below 3,000ft the mountains above the San Gabriel Valley join Mt. Baldy and its sister peaks in the show.
I drove a loop one day, from Portland to Tillamook, then up 1 past Cannon Beach, to Portland. I opted not to go up to Astoria and then back around that day, intending to go back and complete the loop. Never did. The loop I did do was beautiful.
I timed it to get to Haystack Rock at low tide so I was able to walk out there. Was really cool.
It's a good way to get old people (or since my dad died, old person) out of the Portland suburbs - so we've done the drive to Cannon Beach / Ecola State Park, Lincoln City via McMinnville, and Cape Mears via Tillamook. All very scenic.

I was introduced to a new apple called the sugarbee last fall. It is really good and reminded me of a honeycrisp. Turns out it is a honeycrisp combined with some unknown other apple. It's really good.
Definitely! My kids and I planted some honeycrisp seeds at the very beginning of pandemic and the trees are pretty big now, like 4 feet tall or so. I wonder how many years till you get apples?
The honeycrisp variety I like the best is the short squat one that has vertical "stripes" and is not shiny. I don't like the taller, fat on top skinny on bottom like a red delicious, variety. Nor do I really like the super shiny ones. Out in the Bay Area I don't see this variety very much. I saw them a bunch in Louisville.
Cosmic Crisp feels like a watered down Honeycrisp. Maybe they were going for that, but I still prefer honeycrisp. Or fuji when I want a touch of tartness.
My wife is watching it. She says it's interesting, but not as good as the previous seasons simply because she was "there" for this portion of QE2's life.
Season 5, episodes 1 and 2 of Yellowstone are in the books. This show is becoming a little like House of the Dragon in that fewer and fewer likable characters remain. But Montana is still pretty.

MARV LEVY
Levy was at Cal for 4 seasons, compiling an 8-29-3 record. His best season was his last, 1964, in which Cal had a 4-5-1 record. Levy's record against Stanf*rd was 1-3.
TOM HOLMOE
Holmoe was coach for 5 seasons, compiling a 16-39 record. His best two seasons, 1998 and 1999 the teams was a combined 9-13. The 4 wins in 1999 were vacated by an eligibility scandal involving a wide receiver and a professor. Holmoe's teams were winless against Stanfurd, 0-5.
KEITH GILBERTSON
Gilbertson coached Cal for 4 seasons (1992-1996) and was 20-26 overall. This record included a 9-4 season in 1993, which also included an Alamo Bowl win over Iowa and a Top 25 ranking. Unfortunately, the team's record in 1992, 1994, and 1995 was a desultory 11-22. Gilbertson did own a 2-2 record against 'Furd.
SONNY DYKES
Dykes coached Cal for 4 seasons, compiling a 19-30 record. Cal's best season was an 8-5 campaign, which included a bowl win in the Armed Forces Bowl over Air Force. But his 1st season (2013) was a disastrous 1-11 while the 2014 and 2016 campaigns turned in 5-7 records. Dykes seemed to be looking for his next coaching gig during the years two through four.
Good list. Elliot is a weird one. Two terrible seasons and a Rose Bowl. I wouldn't include Dykes, might slip in Kapp. Someone would mention Theder. He rode White's talent for two decent years then stunk the place up.
Interesting pattern forming with Cal's sponsorship and merchandising deals. Kind of resembles their success with staffing of coaches. There's probably multiple connections there.

Honeycrisp. The only downside of honeycrisps is that they're sometimes larger than a softball. That's way too big for an apple.

Fuji is best (to me) but honeycrisp is getting more and more popular.

My wife is watching it. She says it's interesting, but not as good as the previous seasons simply because she was "there" for this portion of QE2's life.
Season 5, episodes 1 and 2 of Yellowstone are in the books. This show is becoming a little like House of the Dragon in that fewer and fewer likable characters remain. But Montana is still pretty.
MT is probably prettier than the 7 Kingdoms which always look like the middle ages ..

By the letter of the law it probably is, but man that's tough on the defender. It's so rare that a player actually takes a knee in an NFL game (except for kickoffs or end-of-game kneel down situations) that you don't expect the play is already dead.

Taylor Kelly is OC/QB coach for the #1 HS in California, Mater Dei.
He was ASU QB 10 years ago. He comes from a town in Idaho near the border of Oregon so he meets the Pacific Northwest criteria.
I have no idea of his abilities but he may be entering college level soon.
Mater Dei is a better job.

Cal, fresh off back-to-back home losses to start the season, hits the road and travels to La Jolla tonight to battle the UCSD Tritons…Cal is a 2.5 point favorite.
If they somehow manage to lose this, I plan on completely ratcheting up my Fire Mark Fox campaign. Not 100% sure what that all would entail, but it’ll be something.
I think a 1-6 record before the USC game on 11/30 is in play if they lose tonight. I will never root against Cal, but IF they do lose, I want them to lose in a manner that would hasten a coaching change.

I'm quite surprised we're favored. UCSD feels more like the type of program Fox should be coaching at . . . as an assistant.
As we’ve discussed, the right basketball coach with the proper system can turn around a program in one off-season…4 seasons for college hoops is like 6-7 seasons for football.

UCSD lost to Sac St and Seattle, and not particularly close games. As ugly as our losses are, they're not quite as bad.
Pac 12 favoritism. We'd be lucky to be mid major. We are an FCS level team. I doubt we could beat a fairly talented high school team, actually.

And the only loss in the Truman Administration was the 1946 game (which was also the first in that timeframe). The bleachers in a portion of the South End Zone were torn up by enraged Cal fans.
Stanf*rd finished the year 5-3-1, Cal finished 2-7 and Frank Wickhorst was fired. The next coach for Cal was Pappy Waldorf.
You can make a strong argument for Wickhorst as Cal's worst ever head coach, although one season is a small sample size.

My nominations for worst Cal head coaches would be (in no particular order) -
PETE ELLIOTT
Elliott had 3 seasons, 1 of which was a Rose Bowl season (1958). Elliott was 10-21 at Cal, with 1-9 (1957) and 2-8 (1959) seasons sandwiching a 7-4 Rose Bowl season. Elliott was 2-1 vs. Stanfurd.
MARV LEVY
Levy was at Cal for 4 seasons, compiling an 8-29-3 record. His best season was his last, 1964, in which Cal had a 4-5-1 record. Levy's record against Stanf*rd was 1-3.
TOM HOLMOE
Holmoe was coach for 5 seasons, compiling a 16-39 record. His best two seasons, 1998 and 1999 the teams was a combined 9-13. The 4 wins in 1999 were vacated by an eligibility scandal involving a wide receiver and a professor. Holmoe's teams were winless against Stanfurd, 0-5.
KEITH GILBERTSON
Gilbertson coached Cal for 4 seasons (1992-1996) and was 20-26 overall. This record included a 9-4 season in 1993, which also included an Alamo Bowl win over Iowa and a Top 25 ranking. Unfortunately, the team's record in 1992, 1994, and 1995 was a desultory 11-22. Gilbertson did own a 2-2 record against 'Furd.
SONNY DYKES
Dykes coached Cal for 4 seasons, compiling a 19-30 record. Cal's best season was an 8-5 campaign, which included a bowl win in the Armed Forces Bowl over Air Force. But his 1st season (2013) was a disastrous 1-11 while the 2014 and 2016 campaigns turned in 5-7 records. Dykes seemed to be looking for his next coaching gig during the years two through four.

Good list. Elliot is a weird one. Two terrible seasons and a Rose Bowl. I wouldn't include Dykes, might slip in Kapp. Someone would mention Theder. He rode White's talent for two decent years then stunk the place up.
