I have been to random places in Naples and New York and Chicago and it is tempting to pick one of them because they are exotic and inaccessible from where I am sitting here in SF, but honestly Tony’s, Delfina, and Zero Zero are as good as those places.
The great thing about pizza is that there are so many kinds and varieties to go around. Everyone should eat pizza all of the time.
I'm not usually one for deep dish pizza but there's a place called Sicilia's in Providence (on Atwells Ave on Federal Hill, which used to be a serious "little Italy kind of neighborhood"), which just makes great deep dish. Also the sort of place where you used to see some guys just hanging around, not doing much of anything, you know, just in case.
It was a place somewhere in midtown Manhattan. Just a standard greasy slice of pepperoni that I had to fold in half to insert into my pizza hole. Wasn't fancy or expensive. But it was a perfect Manhattan slice - crust, sauce, toppings. God, I wish I could remember where it was, but I still hold in my mind's eye as the benchmark that every other slice is measured against.
Ocean. The immensity and emptiness of the endless water, the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. It’s calming and a kind of metaphor for existence that I enjoy. Also reminds me of growing up in Monterey. The mountains are cool too though, could see different folks reasonably going either way. Of course in CA we are blessed with both, which is really pretty amazing.
I guess mountains? The DC area is the furthest I've ever lived from the sea, but between my wife's total lack of interest in the ocean (thanks to growing up in the midwest and spending countless summers in Vermont), and my lack of interest in boardwalk beach towns, I've kind of lost touch with the ocean by default.
Ocean. The funny thing is that I hate living near the ocean, but I love visiting. I hate ocean beaches that are too cold, rough, crowded, or rocky. I get seasick easily, so I don't go on the ocean. But the ocean speaks to me. I don't know what it is - but I'm hypnotized by its power and beauty.
Oceans by boundless nautical miles. The highway to every land on earth, can be still as a pond one day and deadly powerful and angry the next. Contains more mysteries and undiscovered creatures than we will ever know. The birthplace of all life on earth and the primary driver of almost every weather pattern around the globe. You can chill on sandy beaches and admire its beauty, jump in and feel weightless, surf the breaking waves, sail across its seas to foreign lands and pull almost all your nutrients from its waters.
I recall an old I Love Lucy episode where she and Ethyl were gyrating over Ricki's next band gig on the road, wondering where. Climaxing at the end where Ricki announces...."it is in Del.... Mar, Calee-fornia" and they both gasp.
Mountains. I find them to be peaceful and serene. Living in MD is the first time in my life I've lived somewhere where I cannot see mountains on a daily basis, but there's enough varied elevation to make the landscape interesting. That's a big contrast to a place like Florida, which I find to be uncomfortably flat.
mountain without a doubt for me. in fact i am generally happiest when i can see the mountains or be around them on a daily basis. it is always my first choice for a vacation destination.
while i am not religious, there is something "spiritual" about the mountains for me. a nice connection to past and future since they are enduring yet changing.
Mt favorite days on the water in LA are immediately after a winter storm. All the pollution is cleared out and you are graced with snow capped mountains as the backdrop for a beautiful day on the water. If the snow level drops below 3,000ft the mountains above the San Gabriel Valley join Mt. Baldy and its sister peaks in the show.
I drove a loop one day, from Portland to Tillamook, then up 1 past Cannon Beach, to Portland. I opted not to go up to Astoria and then back around that day, intending to go back and complete the loop. Never did. The loop I did do was beautiful.
I timed it to get to Haystack Rock at low tide so I was able to walk out there. Was really cool.
Commonly used rapid antigen home tests fail to reliably detect an omicron COVID-19 infection in asymptomatic people, according to a study published Monday in the journal Clinical Microbiology and Infection. Dutch researchers tested 3,600 asymptomatic people with suspected COVID-19 between January and March, when omicron accounted for up to 99.5% of cases in the Netherlands, using self-administered rapid antigen tests and PCR tests. The overall sensitivities for the three bands used — sold under the retail names of Flowflex, MPBio, and Clinitest — were 27.5%. A quarter of the participants who tested again within 10 days of getting a negative result from a rapid test were positive. “Self-testing in asymptomatic individuals may only detect the minority of infections,” the authors wrote. “Repeated self-testing in case of a negative self-test is advocated to improve the diagnostic yield, and individuals should be advised to re-test when symptoms develop.”
I've had so many other cold/flu viruses rip through my household lately (consequences of having two kids in different schools and a wife who now has a job in a school) that I'm not even thinking about Covid anymore. It's another one on the pile.
Same! No one has tested positive for Covid in my house, but among my wife, my 3 daughters and me, at least one person has been fairly sick over the past like 6 weeks at any given time, and usually 2 or 3. I think the lockdown kept us fairly virus free the past couple years and now we are getting caught up
We've had a series of colds come through the house, and my older daughter has had strep throat followed by a nasty cold at college - everything *except* COVID is ripping through the dorms.
BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 may be 7x more "immune-evasive" than BA.5, which means it is the likely next wave. I don't know about you, but I guess I'm wearing a mask again a week ahead of me taking trips.
We actually had someone in the house get the ‘rona - my 17 year old. Mostly just cold symptoms and fatigue for a week & change. I’m sticking to masks in stores and public transport for the time being. (Posting from the metro as it happens)

I was introduced to a new apple called the sugarbee last fall. It is really good and reminded me of a honeycrisp. Turns out it is a honeycrisp combined with some unknown other apple. It's really good.
Definitely! My kids and I planted some honeycrisp seeds at the very beginning of pandemic and the trees are pretty big now, like 4 feet tall or so. I wonder how many years till you get apples?
The honeycrisp variety I like the best is the short squat one that has vertical "stripes" and is not shiny. I don't like the taller, fat on top skinny on bottom like a red delicious, variety. Nor do I really like the super shiny ones. Out in the Bay Area I don't see this variety very much. I saw them a bunch in Louisville.
Cosmic Crisp feels like a watered down Honeycrisp. Maybe they were going for that, but I still prefer honeycrisp. Or fuji when I want a touch of tartness.
My wife is watching it. She says it's interesting, but not as good as the previous seasons simply because she was "there" for this portion of QE2's life.
Season 5, episodes 1 and 2 of Yellowstone are in the books. This show is becoming a little like House of the Dragon in that fewer and fewer likable characters remain. But Montana is still pretty.
I find it pretty amusing at this point. That team wasn't THAT great (played a lot of close games) but they get to keep acting like they're still the greatest.
By the letter of the law it probably is, but man that's tough on the defender. It's so rare that a player actually takes a knee in an NFL game (except for kickoffs or end-of-game kneel down situations) that you don't expect the play is already dead.
That is a lot of snow! I’ve worked with a few people from the Buffalo area and all of them take the same view: great place to live except for the snow and I’m never going back
The forecast in Buffalo calls for a foot and a half of snow from Thursday through Saturday. Should make for a wonderful football game. Best of all, it's being televised on CBS Sports Network.
Cal, fresh off back-to-back home losses to start the season, hits the road and travels to La Jolla tonight to battle the UCSD Tritons…Cal is a 2.5 point favorite.
If they somehow manage to lose this, I plan on completely ratcheting up my Fire Mark Fox campaign. Not 100% sure what that all would entail, but it’ll be something.
I think a 1-6 record before the USC game on 11/30 is in play if they lose tonight. I will never root against Cal, but IF they do lose, I want them to lose in a manner that would hasten a coaching change.
As we’ve discussed, the right basketball coach with the proper system can turn around a program in one off-season…4 seasons for college hoops is like 6-7 seasons for football.
Fox’s quotes that he now finally has the kind of team that can play the way he wants them to is prima facie preposterous. This guy is a joke.
Honestly I don't expect a victory as these guys handled us last season. On ESPN+ as well which I don't get. EDIT: Hulu carries ESPN+ so I'll watch the first few minutes until things start going south, usually at around the 15:00 mark in the first half.
Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by Students for a Democratic Society. U.S. Presidents edition.
Cal’s best record in Big Games (four or more games played) came during the presidency of Harry Truman when they were 6-1.* They were worst under Barack Obama, 1-7. Also notable, the Bears were 6-2 under George W. Bush, 6-2 during the Eisenhower years. 5-5 under FDR, 0-4 under George HW Bush. The Bears enter this year's contest 1-0 under Joe Biden.
Cal football trivia fun fact will appear daily during Big Game week.
* In the event of a tie the team possessing the Axe kept it so for these purposes ties count as wins for the possessor of the Axe.
And the only loss in the Truman Administration was the 1946 game (which was also the first in that timeframe). Notable fact about the 1946 Big Game: it was the first Big Game after Stanfurd resurrected its football program following World War II. Cal's head coach was Frank Wickhorst. Stanfurd won, 25-6. The bleachers in a portion of the South End Zone were torn up by enraged Cal fans.
Stanf*rd finished the year 5-3-1, Cal finished 2-7 and Frank Wickhorst was fired. The next coach for Cal was Pappy Waldorf.
My nominations for worst Cal head coaches would be (in no particular order) -
PETE ELLIOTT
Elliott had 3 seasons, 1 of which was a Rose Bowl season (1958). Elliott was 10-21 at Cal, with 1-9 (1957) and 2-8 (1959) seasons sandwiching a 7-4 Rose Bowl season. Elliott was 2-1 vs. Stanfurd.
MARV LEVY
Levy was at Cal for 4 seasons, compiling an 8-29-3 record. His best season was his last, 1964, in which Cal had a 4-5-1 record. Levy's record against Stanf*rd was 1-3.
TOM HOLMOE
Holmoe was coach for 5 seasons, compiling a 16-39 record. His best two seasons, 1998 and 1999 the teams was a combined 9-13. The 4 wins in 1999 were vacated by an eligibility scandal involving a wide receiver and a professor. Holmoe's teams were winless against Stanfurd, 0-5.
KEITH GILBERTSON
Gilbertson coached Cal for 4 seasons (1992-1996) and was 20-26 overall. This record included a 9-4 season in 1993, which also included an Alamo Bowl win over Iowa and a Top 25 ranking. Unfortunately, the team's record in 1992, 1994, and 1995 was a desultory 11-22. Gilbertson did own a 2-2 record against 'Furd.
SONNY DYKES
Dykes coached Cal for 4 seasons, compiling a 19-30 record. Cal's best season was an 8-5 campaign, which included a bowl win in the Armed Forces Bowl over Air Force. But his 1st season (2013) was a disastrous 1-11 while the 2014 and 2016 campaigns turned in 5-7 records. Dykes seemed to be looking for his next coaching gig during the years two through four.
Good list. Elliot is a weird one. Two terrible seasons and a Rose Bowl. I wouldn't include Dykes, might slip in Kapp. Someone would mention Theder. He rode White's talent for two decent years then stunk the place up.
Interesting pattern forming with Cal's sponsorship and merchandising deals. Kind of resembles their success with staffing of coaches. There's probably multiple connections there.

Loved the local pizza place where I grew up in Harrison, NY. Had a lot of ricotta on it
not far from me. is it still there?
I just googled it and can't find it. I think it was on Halsted Ave.
But I lived there 20+ years ago so...
there is a place in Mamaroneck called Sal's that everyone raves about. especially their Sicilian slices.
i must admit they are pretty good and i have not had better.
Looked that place up. I think I've been there.
Bruno’s on Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, NY, directly across the street from the race track. Wood fired… f-ing delicious.
Place burned down 2010-ish…dagger.
we are all going to be craving pizza fur lunch/dinner after this. and it wont even matter it is it the best pizza or not
This thread made me call an audible from cooking and we got Zachary's stuffed spinach and mushroom tonight.
I loved the spinach and mushroom. Makes me want to get some tomorrow.

Ive found that Google Maps timeline helps when trying to find the name of a restaurant I've been to before. They show all stops and routes.
Either Zachary's or Tony Gemignani's simple pepperoni.
Not surprisingly it was in Italy. A marinara pizza in Bologna. Sublime.
Agreed, more than one place.
seems cliche but true. the best we ever had was in Naples at some place that looked a 100 yrs old.
Oceans or Mountains?
Ocean. The immensity and emptiness of the endless water, the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks. It’s calming and a kind of metaphor for existence that I enjoy. If you live in San Diego you get both growing up so I love both.
Live a mile from the ocean, but mountains are my place.
Mountains. My parents were both climbers so they took us mountains and not oceans when I was a child.
Oceans by boundless nautical miles. The highway to every land on earth, can be still as a pond one day and deadly powerful and angry the next. Oceans and it's not even close.
The streams of the mountain are more pleasing to me than the sea.
If I were living at Stinson Beach, Malibu or Del Mar I would favor the ocean. (Used to live in Del Mar as a kid). Otherwise I prefer mountains.
I recall an old I Love Lucy episode where she and Ethyl were gyrating over Ricki's next band gig on the road, wondering where. Climaxing at the end where Ricki announces...."it is in Del.... Mar, Calee-fornia" and they both gasp.

Can I say both?
no. that is what the OR is for
But we have mountains you can see the ocean from. Both are good things, and there is no reason for me to have to chooese!

perhaps around Cannon Beach? That stretch of coastline is just gorgeous.
I think so, it's a place that is close to Portland - where we were visiting our friends.

Apple
Ambrosia and Cosmic Crisp are my favorites.
I was introduced to a new apple called the sugarbee last fall. It is really good and reminded me of a honeycrisp. Turns out it is a honeycrisp combined with some unknown other apple. It's really good.
granny smith .. i like the tartness of a nice granny smith apple that a hard to get in other varieties.
they are very good for pies too
Honeycrisp. The only downside of honeycrisps is that they're sometimes larger than a softball. That's way too big for an apple.
One of the better new varieties to come on the market in recent times.
Fuji is best (to me) but honeycrisp is getting more and more popular.
Have you guys tried Cosmic Crisp? Pretty good, too. All these varieties now are so much better than red delicious
Cosmic Crisp feels like a watered down Honeycrisp. Maybe they were going for that, but I still prefer honeycrisp. Or fuji when I want a touch of tartness.

By the letter of the law it probably is, but man that's tough on the defender. It's so rare that a player actually takes a knee in an NFL game (except for kickoffs or end-of-game kneel down situations) that you don't expect the play is already dead.
Hahahahahahhahahaha
Just hahahahahahaha

Akron is already 1-9 and winless in the MAC. Let's see how their Saturday is shaping up vs. Buffalo.
https://twitter.com/NWSBUFFALO/status/1592472178531999744
That is a lot of snow! I’ve worked with a few people from the Buffalo area and all of them take the same view: great place to live except for the snow and I’m never going back
The forecast in Buffalo calls for a foot and a half of snow from Thursday through Saturday. Should make for a wonderful football game. Best of all, it's being televised on CBS Sports Network.
“Synoptic event” sounds bad
CAL
I have been manually checking some up and coming coaches.
Taylor Kelly is OC/QB coach for the #1 HS in California, Mater Dei.
He was ASU QB 10 years ago. He comes from a town in Idaho near the border of Oregon so he meets the Pacific Northwest criteria.
I have no idea of his abilities but he may be entering college level soon.
Mater Dei is a better job.
the head coach of Mater Dei just retired - perhaps Kelly is in line for succession
Go Bears 49 gets a day in the sun...
Cal Football: Is Troy Taylor a Realistic Possibility as Bears' Next Offensive Coordinator? (story from yesterday afternoon)
https://www.si.com/college/cal/news/troy-taylor-cal
Don't forget to look up Troy Taylor on Wikipedia
I mean that would be amazing but would require us to pony up the cash to fire Wilcox. I can only dream of such things
Because no way he accepts OC, why would he? He is a HC candidate
The constant Troy Taylor recommendations vectoring in from all directions in time and space, can get to me at times. Serenity now.
Realistically he's going to get FBS head coach offers, so no chance we get him as OC, but if he does come as OC I might be happier than GB49 lol
Sac State HC is a better job.
Your link got cutoff.

OK thanks
Cal, fresh off back-to-back home losses to start the season, hits the road and travels to La Jolla tonight to battle the UCSD Tritons…Cal is a 2.5 point favorite.
If they somehow manage to lose this, I plan on completely ratcheting up my Fire Mark Fox campaign. Not 100% sure what that all would entail, but it’ll be something.
I think a 1-6 record before the USC game on 11/30 is in play if they lose tonight. I will never root against Cal, but IF they do lose, I want them to lose in a manner that would hasten a coaching change.
Totally agreed, BP.
My brother went to UCSD. They kicked our ass last year
And again today!
I was planning on going to this game tonight but I’m in Denver for work.
What a fortuitous trip! ;-)
I'm quite surprised we're favored. UCSD feels more like the type of program Fox should be coaching at . . . as an assistant.
Wilfox
Honestly I don't expect a victory as these guys handled us last season. On ESPN+ as well which I don't get. EDIT: Hulu carries ESPN+ so I'll watch the first few minutes until things start going south, usually at around the 15:00 mark in the first half.
Yeah, why are we favored?
UCSD lost to Sac St and Seattle, and not particularly close games. As ugly as our losses are, they're not quite as bad.
Pac 12 favoritism. We'd be lucky to be mid major. We are an FCS level team. I doubt we could beat a fairly talented high school team, actually.
Now's the time to get in on betting against Cal before Vegas wises up.
2-0…just saying.
"UC San Diego beats Cal 80-67 for first win over Pac-12 team" - 2021
And the 2nd win against a Pac-12 team will be? . . . .
I'm not sure he could survive another loss to a lower-division UC school.
I want him not to survive.
You can make a strong argument for Wickhorst as Cal's worst ever head coach, although one season is a small sample size.
1 season is a very small sample size, indeed.
WHOA - dude - blaming him for 2013 is not fair, it's 90% Tedford issues, not Dykes.
Good list. Elliot is a weird one. Two terrible seasons and a Rose Bowl. I wouldn't include Dykes, might slip in Kapp. Someone would mention Theder. He rode White's talent for two decent years then stunk the place up.
Thanks, Obama
Interesting factoids.
Go Bears!!! Beat Stanfurd!!!
People are grumbling that Big Game tickets are really hard to get a hold of.
What? they're on stubhub and seatgeek for list, at least they were. And I know the ATO still has some for STH. I asked about one for No 3's GF.
i usually make this my profile photo on FB during Big Game week.
but since i am taking a leave of absence from FB and Insta. i'll post it here

Kaboom, FTX, ...
Interesting pattern forming with Cal's sponsorship and merchandising deals. Kind of resembles their success with staffing of coaches. There's probably multiple connections there.
