Working in forestry I saw quite a few. Quite a few on Olympic Peninsula while contracted to the Quinault Tribe....and once in a while on the Mt. Hood NF and the Gifford Pinchot. By far the most in terms of frequency was on Prince of Wales Island in SE AK....too many to count and once a
persistent "aggressive" one following me and chomping its jaws....but on POW there were only Black Bears, so one was on top of the food chain vs. quite a bit of the rest of SE AK where fire arms, rifle or slug 12 gauge were required with certification. I worked with quite a few folks who transferred to POW due to close calls with Brown Bears (two snap shot killings at close range).
Living in Ketchikan, on Deermount St., right in town, my porch on the second level of a duplex was visited a few times. Once whilst watching football on a late Sat. afternoon a bear appeared at the sliding glass door and gave me a jolt. My siamese cat was indoor/outdoor and if he was staying under the bed for long periods, bears were around....scent no doubt.
Saw one this past summer backpacking in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. Surprising we didn't see more as bear scat and clawed out tree marks were everywhere. Apparently, the area we were in is known as Bear Alley.
I've seen dozens. We had a house in Tahoe when I was growing up and we'd regularly find them up on hind legs trying to get into the trash shed when we came home at night. This summer, I saw a cub on the beach menacing people's coolers in the middle of the day. He did seem to enjoy the whole charcuterie board he stole.
Happened upon a couple of youngsters while hiking Sword Lake (a Lair of the Bear favorite) a few years ago. Figured mama would be nearby so we kept moving and didn’t wait to find out. Also witnessed a sow and two cubs emerge from a den while touring Denali one summer. That was a major wow. Occasionally black bears stroll through the small town park where my son lives (western MA).
I saw a dead one on the side of the interstate (I-66) in northern Virginia a while back. They mostly stick to more mountainous parts of MD, but I occasionally see evidence of one (i.e. poop) in my local woods.
- a good number in Denali NP when you are on the bus and basically taking a bus safari thru the park. we witnessed the aftermath of a male bear killing a younger one. apparently the mama bears dont go into heat while they are nursing, so it is something of a known phenomenon. the surviving cub and mom were scampering away down the hill to safety ...
- driving around Glacier NP area, there are a lot of bears
If the Bears win on Saturday it will mark the first time that they've won three consecutive Big Games on the Farm since '47, '49 and '51. It will also give Wilcox a winning record against Furd (4-3) something only the following other Cal coaches (since the permanent move to football in 1915) can boast: Smith, Allison, Waldorf, Elliot, Kapp and Tedford. (Gilbertson and Theder were both .500 against the Lobsterbacks.)
A win this Saturday on The Farm would also be three straight wins against Stanf*rd, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 2002 through 2006 teams defeated Stanf*rd 5 straight times.
Before 2002-2006, the previous winning streaks of at least 3 games against Stanf*rd have been in these years -
1919-1923 (5 straight; Andy Smith)
1936-1939 (4 straight; Stub Allison)
1947-1949 (Pappy Waldorf)
1958-1960 (2 wins under Pete Elliott, 1 win under Marv Levy)
If you allow for ties, the undefeated streaks would add or extend these periods -
1901-1903 (Frank Simpson, 1-0-0; James Whipple, 1-0-1)
NOTABLE: Bruce Snyder was winless (0-4-1) vs. Stanf*rd. The 1991 Big Game still hurts.
Other winless Cal head coaches in Big Game history -
Nibs Price (0-4-1), 1926-1930
Frank Wickhorst (0-1), 1946
Steve Mariucci (0-1), 1996
Tom Holmoe (0-5), 1997-2001
Sonny Dykes (0-4), 2013-2016
I won't list the records of coaches before Andy Smith (pre-1916) because there are at least 13 head coaches whose stints were short - 1 or 2 years.
Notable from that period, though is Garrett Cochran, whose 1898 and 1899 teams were 2-0 against the Lobsterbacks. "Hit 'em again, boys! Harder! Harder!"
Kapp, Glibertson and Theder were a combined 7-6 in Big Games despite combining for only four winning seasons in 13 years. Meanwhile Snyder, Price and White were a combined 2-12-2 in Big Games despite having eight winning seasons in 16 years.
Flood made that horrible roughing the passer call in the 1990 Big Game. I'm not sure if Flood headed up the officiating crew for the 1991 Big Game. In the 1991 Big Game, Cal was called for 15 unsportsmanlike penalties. Fifteen. 225 yards.
Oh right, that was 90 at home. 91 at Furd was horrendous. I remember quite a few of them were on the sidelines after the Furd ball carrier went into the Cal sidelines.
I went for a walk yesterday afternoon and for the first time I can recall someone else initiated a Go Bears. I was wearing a Cal cap and was watching some turkeys working their way to where they roost at night. A guy and a girl came up on a run. He was wearing an A's t-shirt and noticed my cap and gave me a Go Bears. I returned it and included a go A's. We chatted a bit and it turns out he's from Fairfield and copped to really being more of a Giants fan. His dad went to Cal.
On this day in 1947 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Montana, 60-14. The following weekend Cal would win it’s first Big Game since 1941 to finish Pappy Waldorf’s first season at 9-1. The Bears averaged 8.3 yards per play despite wet, foggy conditions that included a half time drizzle. California led 43-7 at the half and 53-7 entering the final quarter. The Bears used 43 different players, a large number in those days. Most of the damage was done on the ground with only two pass completions in five attempts for 99 aerial yards. The 60 points were the most for California since a 60-13 win in 1928 and it gave the Sturdy Golden Ones 254 points after nine games, the most in a season since 1922. Among the many Bears to gain yardage on the ground was George Fong one of two Chinese-Americans to play for Cal in the first half of the 20th century. After the game star running back Jackie Jensen expressed regret that the Bears ran up the score against the Grizzlies. “Honestly we are. We’re glad everybody on the squad got a chance to play. We’re going to try again next week and we don’t care where the score goes,” he said in reference to the Big Game. Little did he know that a woeful Indian team would play the Bears to the wire and Jensen’s late heroics would be needed for the victory.

Sen. Mullin (R-OK) and the Teamsters have some bad blood going back years. There was a testy exchanges at the Senate Help Committee hearing between the Teamster leader and the Senator. The Teamster leader tweeted that he'd fight Senator Mullin any time, any where. During the hearing, Senator read the tweet and asked the Teamster leader if he wanted to go right now. Bernie Sanders was not amused.
OMFG to Sen Mullin reading SOB’s mean tweets and getting all worked up in a hearing. What a fucking child. Obviously the dude needs thicker skin but also this is not about you! You are an employee of the federal government; we pay your dumbass to work for the government and for the benefit of the general public, not to engage in personal disputes in public.
"The Democratic alarm further spiked two days later, when Univision advertising representatives told the Biden campaign that spots already purchased to run during the Trump interview in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Florida had been canceled — owing to a heretofore unannounced policy about opposition advertising in single-candidate interviews.
Univision also canceled a booking with Biden’s Hispanic Media Director Maca Casado to respond to the Trump interview after it aired on the network’s late news broadcast, according to people familiar with the details, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity for this article because they were not authorized to speak publicly."

House passes stop gap Federal government funding bill 336-95. I have not read too much about the Bill apart from that it lacks a bunch of the MAGA rubbish. It will now go to the Senate, where it is expected to pass. But then everyone will watch to see if the so-called House Freedom Caucus ousts Speaker Johnson.
With the odd, two-tier funding structure, it sounds like they may be getting ready to let funding lapse for HUD, the VA, DoT, and DoE after Jan 19th while they try to figure out another spending bill before the Feb 2nd deadline when the rest of the government would shut down.
I doubt that they will. The bottom line is that Johnson is doing the HFC a huge favor by giving them the veneer of actually governing, contrary to their nihilist tendencies and intent. This is far more evil in the long run as the appearance of ability to govern holds off or blunts potential voter revolt against HFC candidates. In other words, it helps these nihilists get re-elected.
interesting that the more conservative guy made a deal w/ Dems. but maybe he has the assurance of knowing he is conservative enough that the ultra conservative ones are not going to toss him out right away.

Listening to recent Podcast of Champs. and I found David Woods comments on Kelly vis a vis ASU's Kelly Dillingham pretty telling. Not sure I buy any of that. It just strikes me as looking for a reason to stir shit up.
USAToday runs an opinion piece of who they think is on the coaching hot seat. Wilcox is on the list. The article is written from the first person perspective, but isn't attributed.
It would be pretty wild if they took the $400m in revenue this year and paid it to themselves - I dont think they can though. The real value seems to be in controlling the IP long term, but not sure what that is worth. I assume they merge with MWest, contribute the IP into the merged entity and call it the PAC 10 or 12
