Big Game tailgate

We will be serving smash burgers with assorted fried sides (fries, tots, onion rings). There will also be bloody Mary’s, Hawaiian macaroni salad, spam musubi, and butter mochi. Drinking Song at 1:15 followed by shotgunning beers. See you there

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Napoleon, give me some of your tots...

Terence's avatar

I'm bringing cookies.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

If Indica Flower were making an appearance at the tailgate, it might be worth the drive up....

Terence's avatar

It's what rebellions are built on

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

…is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Fire Starkey's avatar

pretty sure she is drunk right now

Terence's avatar

I don't know how Carli Lloyd gets by without criticism (ok maybe not being arrested for domestic violence) but she is just as exhausting as Solo. Aside from being an American heroine

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

She hit the superfecta...domestic violence, DWI, resisting arrest, child abuse...yikes.

SGBear's avatar

Convicted Fraudster Elizabeth Holmes (Stanford, 2002-04) gets sentenced today.

AndyPanda's avatar

This is ridiculous. She's no threat to anyone now, as her reputation will proceed her, and reasonable parole review of any business or public dealings will close any gaps. Any gainful activity that produces even a small amount of restitution, or covering of basic costs, will stil be more than the absolute zero anyone will ever get from this strategy.

And I don't want a bill to incarcerate her, or any social services costs required for kids whose' mom is in prison because some DA wants a high profile incarceration on his resume for personal or egotistical gain.

rocksanddirt's avatar

My guess is she will spend maybe two years indoors, then house arrest for the remainder.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Excellent!! Worried she get off light

Terence's avatar

I'd rather that prison sentence go towards Jan 6 types myself.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

11 years is a stretch...but she deserved some time inside. Fraud is fraud.

Then again, Mark Fox is probably guilty of larceny, yet he's walking around scot free.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

She probably had her baby just to make her look more sympathetic.

O.Overall's avatar

Her voice is so bizarre, once you hear it you can’t shake the background thought that she is like some kind of alien

US cities that are right on the state border, which means a decent part of that metropolitan area is actually in another state

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Kansas City .. i have never been but i know that the real KC is in Missouri.

Justbear's avatar

Yeah, the Chiefs, the Royals, airport, are all in KCMO.

Terence's avatar

Several large corporations have back and forth from KCK and KCMO because there's kind of a tax break war going on between the two cities.

Cugel's avatar

I lived there for a couple of years, about 3/4 of a mile from Kansas - in a house with huge views to the north & the west.

Terence's avatar

Is Reno too far away from the rest of Tahoe?

sycasey's avatar

They do share a TV market, so you could say they're part of the same metro area.

But Reno isn't really "on" the border.

sycasey's avatar

Kind of a lot of major cities are like this

New York

Chicago

Philadelphia

Washington, DC (does this count?)

Kansas City

St. Louis

Portland, OR

Cincinnati

Then you've got Detroit or Buffalo where a portion of the metro area is in Canada.

Berkelium97's avatar

Charlotte

Memphis

sycasey's avatar

I wasn't sure how much people considered the San Diego metro area to extend into Mexico.

But on that note, El Paso.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Pour one out for El Paso...another Sun Bowl-less year for Cal.

Justbear's avatar

Minneapolis/St. Paul

Omaha

A lot of people took Elon up on his severance offer and now there are not enough engineers to keep the company running

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/17/twitter-musk-easing-rto-order/

Scootie's avatar

There is apparently no longer a payroll department, which is going to get hilarious pretty quickly considering that in addition to managing regular payroll they need to build and distribute more than 5000 severance packages. Also saw reports that there is no longer a tax department or financial reporting team. It's not all engineers that you need, buddy!

DC Trojan's avatar

Hard to see how that could backfire

AndyPanda's avatar

Unfortunately, he clearly doesn't care about any negative consequences for others.

O.Overall's avatar

I so so so so badly want Twitter employees to leave and start some similar service that replaces Twitter

Peetyjay's avatar

Yes, and if it were run as an, employee owned co-op that would be truly great!

Oski Disciple's avatar

If Elon Musk wanted to buy something just to make it fall apart, why couldn't it have been Stanfurd?

AndyPanda's avatar

Even he doesn't have nearly enough cash to do that.

SGBear's avatar

Hypothetical $500m

heyalumnigo's avatar

buy out the Panorama Hill Association NIMBYs

FiatSlug's avatar

Rec'd because this is something I've fantasized about since before this century.

It started for me when 15 Canyon Rd went up for sale in the late 1990s.

Berkelium97's avatar

Take half the money and invest it in local interest in the program. Every week choose 5000 local school children, give their families $200 to purchase 4 tickets to the game. $250m is enough to do this for every home game for the next 30-40 years.

The other half? Give Buddy Teevens a lifetime contract at $10m/year to drive LSJU into the ground.

SGBear's avatar

Disqualified. Cal cannot receive any revenues from this.

Berkelium97's avatar

You mean I can't launder the money through children? Outrageous!

SGBear's avatar

Oh, children laundering money is definitely still a possibility - you just have to get better at laundering. How about a legal trust - the Make Athletics Great Again - that avoids any unnecessary disclosure. That trust receives some profits from the forced labor from three of the four Berk97 Orphanages, the Berk97 line of candy-flavored vapes, and the Berk97 junior league of Mozambique precious stone contract labor camps.

SGBear's avatar

I'd build a housing block catered to off-campus students. The WriteForCalifornia Tower.

SGBear's avatar

Scratch that. This is a terrible idea because it wouldn't help the program.

I would build a dedicated fan-zone - food court, rooftop sports bar/beer garden, band areas, picnic area, parking, day lockers, clean bathrooms, games for kids, covered shelter. A place where you could come and essentially be guaranteed a good time and take all the logistics pain out of being an in-person fan.

rocksanddirt's avatar

would buying up the in stadium advertising count? buy it up and stop it.

Other than that, some money laundering to provide tix for local folks to attend games. Set up a charitable foundation that Hires team members under the NIL for community advancement stuff.

Buy out the pac12 network and get it on everywhere, even taking lower carriage fees to get into every cable system, set up a streaming service that doesn't require a cable subscription just a monthly fee. Then also stop having any games thursday, friday or games that start after 5PM.

Terence's avatar

I would invest half of it in low risk mutual funds and then take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities.. .

Terence's avatar

Or two chicks at the same time.

SGBear's avatar

If your local grocery store is selling big giant bulbs of garlic, be careful. That's probably elephant garlic. It is technically not garlic despite it look very much like it. It is closely related to a leek and lacks some of the chemicals to give it true garlic flavor. It gets put onto grocery shelves because it is profitable because of its size.

AndyPanda's avatar

This won't bode well for the Buffs, or the Pac.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Buffs will be just fine, as they answer by hanging 103 on top 25 Texas A & M this afternoon. Still, a helter skelter team, as they alternate good wins over SEC teams Tennessee and Texas A & M with losses to Grambling and UMass.

They do enjoy the best home court advantage in the P12, and will likely find themselves at least on the bubble come March. Rough early results tho for the Pac 12.

AndyPanda's avatar

Pre-Thanksgiving basketball is a terrible predictor of how teams will look after the first of the year (which is why they should have no effect on tournament selection, NOT an outsized effect), but its still hard to fathom how the Buffs can beat ranked teams, but not Grambling or UMass.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

So then your basic beef is with the nature of competitive sports leagues and the postseason...what would your answer be?

April games matter in baseball...September ones in football.

AndyPanda's avatar

They do, some times (April Rangers games don't matter, or example); its more the way the selection process and the ever earlier start creeping forward to Veterans Day, have placed an out-sized importance on these very early games, this in the sport that is most subject to player and team development over time. Bracketology pundits have said conference standings do not matter, and conference tournaments are meaningless unless you are a team that can only get in by winning your conference tournament. I dislike that, as I think conference games and standings, which reflect the best version of most teams, should have a weighted advantage in the seeding.

Putting my game theory hat on…. If you’re a D, don’t you want her in office? Her seat alone doesn’t change the balance and she’s in a deep red district. Having an incompetent embarrassment to the R party in that seat is better for Ds than having an effective leader after the eventual D to unseat her is beat.

In peetyjay's distant relative news: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/18/prosecutors-seditious-conspiracy-case-oath-keepers-00069405

The Bundy standoff in 2014 constitutes the building blocks of the 1/6 insurrection. Rhodes played a prominent role in that standoff, as he did on 1/6. Transcending Rhode's involvement in the Bundy standoff, armed, middle-aged white guys who seek to openly oppose the Federal Government learned that they could draw weapons on federal agents with zero consequence. For those who don't follow these conflicts, who don't know about how the Sagebrush Rebellion, or who don't know how the history of federal land management and development of the West, and especially the interior West, has fueled this fire, the outcome of this trial cannot be overstated. An acquittal will have dire consequences for our democracy and will quite obviously signal that white guys with guns can do whatever they want with impunity. A conviction might actually make folks think twice, but there will be those on the far right who will still decry this as political persecution, a violation of 1st Amendment rights, and provide tacit approval to these acts.

As someone who attended a major sporting event in an authoritarian country, what is Qatar doing?! Beijing turned off the Great Firewall for people in Beijing, seeded the clouds so that it rained the week before and moved all the factories outside of town for a year ahead of time so that all the visitors had nothing but good things to say about being in Beijing.

If you're sportswashing, you try to give all the visitors a positive experience.

Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by The Third World Liberation Front Strike Committee. On this day edition.

Cal is 7-6-2 in Big Games played on November 19th. The Bears best calendar day for Big Games (five or more played on that date) is the 22nd (9-4-1) and their worst is the 23rd (2-9).

On a personal note, tomorrow will be my 44th Big Game. I decline to state my record in Big Games as it may tend to incriminate me. Go Bears!!!
