____ ANXIETY!

Mel Brooks film, in 1977. Starring Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, Ron Carey, and others.

This is, of course, a comedy, with references to Hitchcock movies, other iconic movies, and a Bond villain.

If you haven't seen it, you might find it worth a watch.

Anyone have restaurant suggestions for Athens? I'm there for a week at the beginning of Dec for work. They provide breakfast and lunch so I have about 7 nights of dinner and 1 day of sightseeing before I fly out.

Heard they have a good Red Lobster.

Athens is huge as a city, but I think it is one of the rare instances where you really want to spend your time doing the super-touristy things - essentially everything focused on archeological stuff - the Parthenon, Acropolis, the Acropolis museum and... if you have time, some of the other sites like the Ancient Agora, Odeon, the Panathenaic Stadium, and the National Archeological museum. So you can get it all done in one day. But that's just my opinion and I'm sure others will say you gotta do other things.

From the Guardian: "Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre is recovering after being hit by a full can of Tin during their Concacaf Nations League match against Honduras, who won the first leg of the quarter-final 2-0. Honduras have been ordered to play their next home match behind closed doors after Aguirre was struck by the can, which left the 65-year-old with blood pouring down his face. 'It’s football, I’m not one to complain,' said Aguirre."

Dude, you can totally complain about being hit in the head with a can. That is one tough hombre.

Clippers ‘Wall’ off Warriors for 102-99 win

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2024/11/18/24300374/los-angeles-clippers-wall-off-golden-state-warriors-for-second-win

Down 10 points with 2:30 to go, the Golden State Warriors looked like they were headed to their third loss of the season, and their second to the Los Angeles Clippers. Seven points and 2:18 later, the Warriors had two looks at a game-tying three but couldn’t get a shot to go down in a 102-99 loss

Ultimately the Warriors dug themselves too big of a hole with too many mistakes leading up to their final flurry. For a team that has the NBA’s No. 4 offense, they’re middle-of-the-pack in turnovers and are the worst free-throw shooting team in the league, despite having the best free throw shooter in NBA history. Both of those weaknesses were costly Monday, as the Warriors missed 10 of their 19 free throws and turned the ball over 19 times.

Ugly game for the Warriors. So many TOs and missed FTs. They may be last in the NBA in FTs.

IVR (interactive voice response) systems are a fucking pox on consumers designed to intimidate and exhaust them so that they will simply give up.

If I were king, IVR systems would go the way of the dodo. They are not customer service and they do not meet what I would call minimum standards of accountability. I know what the industry says are minimum standards and what the law allows, but that allows banks, utilities, and merchants to skate on what should be responsibility for their product and recordkeeping.

Speaking of the Big Game:

1. Are we ever going to have the privilege of the Big Game being our final game of the year, again? We no longer have to kiss LA a$$.

2. How many Bears are secretly hoping we lose so the Fire Wilcox movement reaches critical mass?

Expand full comment

I think the reason it isn't the last game is when the NCAA added the 12th game. A game has to be after Thanksgiving and they won't schedule the Big Game then because people go out of town.

It’s time again for Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts, U.S. Presidents and the Big Game edition.

The Bears lost the first Big Game played while Harry Truman was president of the United States but went unbeaten in the last six years of his time as commander-in-chief. The Sturdy Golden Ones went 6-2 vs. Furd during George W. Bush’s two terms, and 5-2-1 under Dwight Eisenhower. Other presidents (starting from 1915 and the permanent switch to football): Woodrow Wilson 3-0, Harding 2-0, Coolidge 1-3-2 Hoover 1–2-1, FDR 5-5, JFK 0-2, LBJ 1-5, Nixon 2-3, Ford 1-2, Carter 2-2, Reagan 3-4-1, HW Bush 0-4 (the most games for a prez without a win), Clinton 2-6, Obama 1-7, Trumpy 1-3. Joe Biden is currently 3-0. If the Bears win on Saturday Biden will go out with the most Big Games by a president without a loss and the best four-year record of any president.

Oski Disciple’s Bear Facts appears Tuesday through Thursday on the DBD throughout the 2024 college football season. This feature is brought to you by King Pin Donuts. Making your life that much better.

I think you have some typos with regards to records under some of the POTUSs.

One sad fact about Big Game history that relates to JFK and LBJ - the 1963 Big Game was delayed one week because of JFK's assassination, which was on Friday, November 22, 1963. The Big Game had been scheduled for Saturday, November 23. Instead, it was delayed to November 30. That year's Big Game was in Palo Alto (mere coincidence: this year's November calendar is the same as 1963's November calendar). As I understand it, Stanfurd's Marching Band was silent for the National Anthem except for a solo trumpeter.

Expand full comment

$C would have just broken into their funeral dirge "Triumph" tune and overplayed the national anthem.

Respect for Furd.

Expand full comment

I found two mistakes. LBJ should have been 1-5 (forgot to count '63) and there was a transposition with Regan who should be 3-4-1 not 4-3-1. If you note anything else, let me know.

Expand full comment

I agree with what you listed. Also -

Truman: 5-1-1 (this elaborates on Cal's unbeaten streak)

Nixon: 2-3 (1 less loss)

That performance of the Banner started their tradition of how Stanfurd does it to this day at home. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC the entire first and second verses of the Banner are done by a solo trumpeter. The rest of the Banned joins at "And the rocket's red glare..."

It's the only song that they play reasonably well.
