If my calculations are correct this will be the 50th Big Game in Memorial Stadium played before fans and it will be my 31st in Berkeley. Saw my first in '64 and have only missed '78 and '80 since.

Expand full comment

I think your calculations are correct.

First Big Game at Cal Memorial in front of fans was in 1923. Afterwards, every even-numbered year from 1924 through 1942, 1946 through 2018, 2022, and tomorrow will be the 2024 Big Game.

1923, 1924 through 1942 - 11 Big Games

1946 through 2018 - 37 Big Games

2022 and 2024 - 2 Big Games

There was no Big Game in 1944 due to World War II (Stanf*rd had no football team), and the 2020 Big Game was played without fans due to the pandemic.

Justin Wilcox is rightfully under fire right now but no one can deny his Big Game record. He has as many wins over the Furdies (four) as Bruce Snyder, Nibs Price, Mike White, Sonny Dykes, Tom Holmoe and Ray Willsey combined. Those six coaches combined for four Big Game wins in 33 seasons.

Expand full comment

He has the good fortune of going up against some really bad Furd teams (so did Tedford).

Expand full comment

Yeah, but Tedford had good teams so his wins are meaningful. But that loss in 2010 was so bad.

[MBB] Wilkinson Leads Cal Past Air Force

BERKELEY – Freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson scored a career-high 23 points off the bench to lead a short-handed California men's basketball squad to a 78-69 win over Air Force in the Cal Classic on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.

Wilkinson, who came into the game with 11 points through the first four games of the season, made 8 of 12 shots from the floor with two 3-pointers for Cal, which improved to 4-1 despite being without three starters – Jovan Blacksher Jr., DJ Campbell and BJ Omot – due to injury.

[WBB] Cal Hosts Rematch Against Auburn

https://calbears.com/news/2024/11/21/womens-basketball-cal-hosts-rematch-against-auburn.aspx

The California women's basketball team (5-0) will face its toughest test of the young season when it hosts SEC opponent Auburn (3-1) at Haas Pavilion on Friday at 6 p.m. PT. The Tigers earned an at-large bid to last year's NCAA Tournament and enter Friday's game having received votes in this week's AP Top 25 poll.

A win against Auburn would give Cal its second win this season over a team that played in last year's NCAA Tournament after having already defeated Gonzaga.

Free throws doom Lakers as Magic steal a victory late

Despite a huge fourth quarter from LeBron James and another monster night from Anthony Davis, the Lakers faltered down the stretch at the free throw line to fall to the Magic, 119-118, snapping their six-game win streak.

Anthony Davis’ dominance continued with 39 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two assists. He also passed Lamar Odom to move to 20th in Lakers franchise history with scoring. LeBron James caught fire in the fourth, finishing with 31 points on 5-8 shooting from range with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

The real story here is that Franz has arrived. Paolo injury may turn out to be a blessing long-term, cause Franz has looked like an all-NBA guy for the past few weeks while no one has been watching.

We watched the last couple of min of the game. Couldn't believe he went with the step back 3. I picture the clip of Kerr with his arms out stretched and then going to his head when Steph took that 3 against the Clippers where he dribbled through 4 clippers and then did the turn around 3 at the top of the key.

I've always liked him and really wanted him to land with Warriors in the Kuminga draft, but didn't ever guess he had this in him. He's been dominant since Paolo's been out.

Browns are down by 1 and their offense has been struggling all game in the snow. Jameis Winston throws a pick at the Pittsburg 22 with 4:22 to go. Pittsburg needs to get some first downs to run out the clock. So Pittsburg dials up a Cal-special by running two straight running plays and an incompletion to go 3-and-out. No problem, just pin them deep with their pretty good punter - Waitman. Waitman shanks a 15 yarder. Winston then decides to suddenly become good, scoring a TD and winning the game.

Interesting telecast. "...game in the snow..." doesn't do it justice. The game was played in near white-out conditions. Grounds crew was out there with snow shovels frequently scraping off snow at the sidelines. There was an eerie quality to the on screen graphics of the line to gain, numbers, and 5-yard transversing lines as players seemed to run through them.

Mrs Slug and I watched the last 5 minutes of the game. I knew that the shanked punt was bad, I just didn't realize how bad because the camera angle was from behind the punter. As SGBear implies, that was the pivotal play of the game.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

Expand full comment

Let me get this straight. Elon Musk buys Twitter for the lulz, lays off 90% of the employees, and it's revenues implode by about 80% - if one were to believe the New York Times. Operationally, Twitter is very visibly a shit show now. And Trump's like "he'd be perfect to do the same thing to the US by cutting three-quarters of Federal jobs?". Oof.

Expand full comment

It's all about the self-aggrandizement. And this is dangerous economically because I believe that Trump, Musk, et al, intend to run the dollar into the ground in order to boost crypto. It's as simple as that.

I also believe that there are other dangers for the US vis-a-vis foreign policy and actions that will damage the American presence and prestige on the world stage.

I know it's a huge jump for many, but it would not surprise me to find that JD Vance becomes president under any number of circumstances sometime within the next year because of economic or military circumstances. Trump is that dangerous and he's making appointments that do nothing to assuage those fears.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Expand full comment

Interestingly enough, my mother-in-law also believes Vance will invoke the 25th A. to get Trump removed. I don't think Vance has the cache to pull this off and see no reason for him to do so when he can simply run in four years.

Expand full comment

Under 25A, Vance would have to get a majority of Cabinet secretaries ("principal officers of the executive departments") to 1) remove Trump, and 2) to rebuff any attempt by Trump to retake office. This is a high bar to hurdle, and I don't think it would be easily done.

Trump would have to be incapacitated in some way for that to happen.

Expand full comment

Trump appointees are not about appointing someone whose policies align with his own. Trump is not intelligent enough to have nuanced policies on a given issue. His appointees are simply a means for delivering spoils to those who have remained and who will continue to remain loyal to him. In the meantime, these appointees can do whatever the hell they want. All to say, Trump isn't intelligent enough strategize a takedown of the dollar. I agree, many in Trump's orbit carry an agenda that goes far beyond the red meat, parochial policies of Trump MAGA. Vance and Musk in particular would love to see the fall of the dollar and rise of crytpo as part of a broader deregulation that aligns with their anarcho-capitalists beliefs.

Expand full comment

Well, it isn't Trump so much as it is the people he appoints that worry me. Trump appoints who he wants because he thinks they will be loyal to him; he cares for nothing else except to keep his sorry self out of prison. Trump's policies amount to this: how do I enrich myself and how do I keep myself out of prison?

If Trumps gets half of his appointments confirmed, though, that's enough to make things dicey. These people are not competent and as department heads, they could wreck things in that way. We are literally at the mercy of civil service folks doing their jobs and if those folks are gone, there are even fewer guardrails.

Expand full comment

Agree to your first point, which is what I was attempting to say. My broader point was just about the perception that these appointees as a mere variant of political belief working within political norms, i.e. just wanting to see less regulation. Some, such as Vance and Musk, are acolytes of Peter Thiel and are adjacent to those who espouse the dark enlightenment, antiegalitarian society in which techno-autocrats rule. We may rightfully question a nonexpert such as RFK, Jr. running HHSA but my concern is that appointments such as RFK, JR., become a mere distraction to a much darker, more sinister force at work here.

Expand full comment

I share your concern. I worry about people who should have no access to enforcement power having any at all. Thiel and his ilk are a perfect example of someone who ought not to have any access to enforcement power or sway in diluting it. It's bad enough that Thiel has any influence at all in an economic sense; he can do enough damage that way. He also seems to have had some sway in his antiegalitarian philosophy on electeds with some sort of legislative power, JD Vance being just one. As you are probably aware, Thiel has been giving copious amounts to GOP candidates in Senate races. Not just Vance, but also Masters in Arizona and others. You want to talk about a threat to democracy? Thiel is very definitely that evil person.

NC State falls to GA Tech 30-29 in a wild game. The started with this weird pick six

State falls behind by 9 with 6:40 to go.

State improbably scores.

Tech 3 and out.

State scores again, partly helped by a terrible angle by the safety. Now they're up by six with only 90 seconds left on the clock - so they need to score a tuddy.

#1 recruit in the ESPN 300 flips from LSU to Michigan. The rumors are that his NIL deal was $12m

The U of Michigan NIL then issued a statement thanking Larry and Jolin Ellison for their contribution to land Bryce Underwood

https://x.com/chengelis/status/1859748263697527285

Here's the rub. Ellison didn't go to Michigan. Here's another thing. Ellison has been divorced four times and has two kids - none are named Jolin. There are no references to Jolin Ellison on the internet and the folks at the UofM board then started sleuthing who she is. A picture was found with Ellison and a woman in a Michigan hat (Ellison in a Ukraine hat because apparently it's the only blue/gold he's got since most of his hats are red).
