Swedish PM resigns a few hours into her administration after coalition partner quit and budget vote did not pass. I guess we've all been there when we failed at assembling a Swedish cabinet when an important part was left out.

Holiday

I stood in line at New Hwong Kok for 2 hours to get two ducks. Found out when I was about 20 min from the front that I could've skipped the line if I didn't need the duck cut. On Christmas we're getting whole Peking ducks and slicing them to eat with bao or pancakes with hoisin sauce and green onions. Not waiting in the line from now on.

Picked up a roasted turkey at Poulet on Shattuck Ave. Was pretty good, $92 but still good. I am fasting today after eating too much.

Expand full comment

I hear you about the eating too much thing. I felt bloated last night before bedtime. And I didn't eat all that much. More than usual, but not much more than usual.

Expand full comment

Meal was great. The Popeyes turkey was excellent and will purchase again. Probably had way too much food.

First whole bird roast went very well. Took about 5hrs and we basted every hour or so with a mixture of bacon fat, olive oil and herbs. Forgot to remove the actual neck (just removed neck skin), so that was an interesting find while carving.

Ate way too much and was uncomfortably full for several hours after the meal.

Expand full comment

Meal... was very good, but kinda funny. My son thought somehow he was supposed to bring all the sides - my wife just asked him to bring a salad, which he did, plus biscuits & roasted squash. Had a 1972 Chateauneuf-du-Pape to go with the ham. No this isn't something I've been saving for a special occasion - bought it pre-release, and man was it ever different, filled with tertiary notes - a wholly unique experience.

Do you have today off?

Expand full comment

Yes. It is a holiday along with Thanksgiving.

When I worked for Bank of Apartheid, the day after Thanksgiving was a regular workday. If you wanted it off you had to take vacation hours.

Expand full comment

Also, I took the three workdays in this week off as well (vacation hours). Excepting 1990, I can't remember a year in which I haven't done that since I came to work at EBMWU.

Writing cards

Expand full comment

We stopped sending out holiday cards about 15 years ago.

Expand full comment

Bah humbug, FiatSlug!!! ;-)

I, however, just started relatively recently…the former Mrs Jimmy C & I started doing it back when we hooked up during the Monty era & I kept on solo after she went off to ruin some other man’s life in ‘17…afraid if I stop, she may come back so I’ll keep at it!! Hahaha

Expand full comment

I started reading and thought you were going to say you hooked up after getting divorced...

Expand full comment

this has become weirdly controversial in our house. For some time we were sending picture cards, and then my wife started vetoing the pictures the kids and I were picking, and no cards were going out... so it's unclear whether we'll just have to go around her, or switch to picture free cards, or what, as I'd like to send some cards to people.

Expand full comment

Divorce her, get custody, and send out whatever damn pictures you want. Problem solved. Tell the judge, "she's just so unagreeable."

There's an SC site on which every single writer / photographer not only picked BYU for tomorrow's game but also described the spread for a BYU win as laughably low. [MBB] Iona defeats #10 Alabama. I don't understand how and why an administration, alumni, and student body would accept a corrupt coach because winning matters more than ethics.

Pitino could step off the plane at OAK tomorrow, Uber to Haas and prob turn this Cal team into a .500 ball club from here on out, all centering around Kuany’s athleticism & length on the defensive end. Fox is a boob - playing this guy on the wing...sigh, SMH.

Sorry, SGB, but I’d take him in a heartbeat...the entire sport is dirty & corrupt...it’s not like he killed someone. If the NCAA is going to allow him to coach, why wouldn’t you grab a guy that wins? Wins = $$$ for your school, which helps students.

NCAA Tournament > the high & mighty moral compass... ;-)

The part I find interesting is that we're not any better at accepting the successes and constraints of trying to do science in real time with this. Like, it might be time to panic, it might not, the best we can do is wait and see if the work yields data that can be used to bolster vaccines if needed.

Expand full comment

Pretty much. My understanding is that the mRNA vaccines should still be pretty good at prepping your immune system even for variants like this. Still possible a new variant evades it, but let's see.

I do wonder how much the US and other first-world nations could be doing to get vaccines out to the rest of the world. Seems like that's the first and best way to stop these variants.

Expand full comment

We are! The mRNA vaccines are hard to scale, and can't be distributed everywhere. The failure of covax (IIRC) has been a big problem.

NFL Thanksgiving grades: Raiders earn 'B+' for shocking Cowboys, Bears don't impress in win, Saints fall flat, Lions lose again.

Expand full comment

That's the highest grade the Raiders could have possibly earned for that game. Uneven performance, way too many penalties (many of which were mental mistakes), the 4th quarter defense was about as resistant as butter facing a hot knife, and the offensive line looked overmatched at times. This is not Al Davis' Raiders.

Mark Davis needs to fire Mayock, the coaching staff, and start over.

It's nothing remotely as dramatic, but it's so easy to do little acts of kindness. A woman I know was homeless until a couple months ago when she got into a subsidized apartment. She still is on her old corner panhandling once a week or so. I was having Cornish game hen for Thanksgiving and they only sell them in two packs. When I saw her earlier this week I asked if she wanted one. I saw her this morning and she was so gracious and thankful that she had something like that to make for her meal yesterday. Small things can make a difference.
