Silver Lining: My family and two other families are planning a trip to Grand Staircase/Lake Powell area this Spring. yeah, it was! The first goal was nice, but the second was insane. That ball was millimeters from being out.
"All the ball beyond all the line" is nuts. Brings parallax into the mix way too much. They should have something like "any grass visible between ball and line" (with the ball outside the pitch, of course).
They were really good in CONCACAF qualifying, though I'm not sure how much that means (the US and Mexico shuffled players in and out a lot more than Canada did).
Despite that performance, I don't think the power rankings ever had them on the same level as those other top CONCACAF teams. That seems to have been borne out in this tournament.
My impression from what little I've watched is that they decided there was nothing to lose by sticking with stylish attack, and it turns out that's not true.
Mexico is hampered by poor management (unwilling to hire non-Mexican staff) and by trotting out an older team than most, and with very little in terms of younger player development.
Mexico has a less talented "generation" coming up, at least by their standards. USA is much better setup for the next World Cup or 2. That said, a lot of old dudes played for Mexico this time around
FET. This reminds me when I was driving on the round-about in front of the Fiji House when I was at Cal. I saw my buddy, a rugby player, who was hanging out with his brothers on the front step. Like a dummy, I shot him the bird playfully. He tilted his head confused and then started walking toward me along with his brothers. And then I realized, it wasn't him. I could not apologize enough and they laughed it off. I booked an optometrist appointment shortly thereafter.
Ouch, that does not sound fun at all. I didn't get in any real "fights" in college - threw some guy around at a party I had at my art studio, because he was hitting on a woman who was really not interested in him at all. But it was just like judo - and he bounced off the wooden floor - he wasn't bleeding or anything.
The only time I had a gun pointed at me was about 6 years ago, I was chasing three thieves out of the building at midnight with a baseball bat; two of them were kids, one and adult, who waved a gun at me as he was climbing over the fence to leave.
I flipped the bird to a bouncer outside a night club in France once and the dude absolutely lost his mind, ended up starting a fist fight. I think perhaps the gruffness of the gesture is a little uncommon there.

Chef's Table - Pizza (Netflix, 15/19 WB). Netflix's personal profile series about famous chefs focuses specifically on a single food type. The series can be summarized by the meme of "what did it cost you?"/"Everything" . However, Pizza starts to diverge from that formula to start having "I didn't know what else to do because I was a bit of a fuckup, so I accidentally got good at pizza and it made me happy". It's a bit less bleak and bit more uplifting. But it's really a show for foodies and most other folks might find this shit boring.

very enjoyable first episode, especially if you fondly remember the movie Willow (1998). nicely updated for modern times, sassy characters, still funny, etc.
i realized after the fact that i happened to have watched it on the first day it was released.
Both Willow the movie and the series are streaming on Disney+, not Amazon. The movie Willow came out in 1988, not 1998.
I really enjoyed the original movie and I was looking forward to the series. I watched the first two episode last and found them a bit underwhelming. It felt a little too YA adventure for me. I thought it was funny and will continue to watch but I hope it improves.
The big reveal was fairly obvious once she tagged along and left the castle.

Anyway, that doesn't mean no Ron Howard movies are GOOD. Some of them are good (I don't think Willow is good). But they don't have a recognizable personal stamp.
I rewatched it last week and still enjoyed it enough to watch the first two episodes last night. I felt the show was a bit underwhelming but hopefully it will get better.

between SC going to the Big10 and the Rose Bowl not being the Rose Bowl for much longer, I don't know what I'm supposed to be interested in re: my preferred semi-pro team.
Its a CFP semifinal next year. So not necessarily the destination for the last Pac-12 (current edition) champion. (Not that that's of any direct relevance to Cal.)
And remember to DVR the game to watch when you’re home. One of the real lures of the Sun Bowl is hearing Nessler and Danielson working the game for CBS and experiencing Cal football for the first time after years of high profile SEC games.

Welcome to the Ethan Baxter era. Jamieson Sheahan forgoes his final year of eligibility and declares for the NFL draft. It's just as well since Jamieson will be 26 years old next season. Baxter will be a 21 year old RS-Freshman who has never played in a competitive football game before, just like Sheahan before him.
Sheahan finished #14 in average punt distance this year. I think he has a decent chance of getting a UDFA invite and an outside chance of making a roster since there are only a few teams who might look for new punters.
I muted the telecast when Bill started talking about how Mark Fox heals Walton’s own soul…he was spouting gibberish. Roxy just started ignoring some of his comments.
I watched for about 5 min when the UNC game went to halftime. Heard him say that both Okafur and Alijiki from the same hometown in Ireland. Then said they don't look very Irish.
Well watching the game one got the impression that Walton's comments were even more odd than usual, but look at the product on the court, it's almost unspeakable.
I watch the game just to see USC (hadn't seen them yet) and to see what the deal with Cal is. With 4 rotation players not dressed, and another that barely played and didn't contribute, its hard to draw many meaningful conclusions, but my takeaway was the Bears struggle to make makeable shots. Lots of looks that weren't terrible, especially considering USC is bigger and deeper, that clanked off some sector of the rim. Defense was decent, but until the Bears can hit shots when they have/take them, it really doesn't matter what plays Coach is calling. And the offense didn't look that unreasonable for a mostly middle of the Big West roster.
The few min I've watched this season the O seems similar to last year. Dribble handoff along the perimeter and maybe (rarely) penetrate when there is a mismatch. Otherwise 1 on 1 with whoever has the ball with under 5 seconds. Sometimes we also throw it into Lars but he either fumbles it or gets it stolen. I will have to say he looks much more mobile than in his first couple of years.
If Lars had a pair of hands, he’d be a a solid ball player. He’ll never be athletic, but he can actually get up the floor ok for a 7-footer. He definitely has improved since his arrival on campus…but he lacks the hands, man…makes Newellbany look like Ozzie Smith.
As you said, he fumbles the ball far too often gets muffed, or it gets tapped away because he can’t catch it cleanly. Fox is asking him to do too much, because he is Mark Fox. He’s basically recruited 2 bigs in 4 years….Lars and Okafor.

At least the band looked and sounded really good.
