Might be too late, but Windmill Market on Indian Canyon Drive - closer to Desert Hot Springs - has amazing date milkshakes

I've never even heard of date milkshakes. Sounds delicious though. Dates are an underappreciated item.

they're really good although even the small is a _lot_ because they are not holding back on the ice cream either. The dates you can buy at the market are super good - I remember coming back from a family trip to see my parents when they lived thereabouts, my wife gave our middle eastern cab driver some of the dates we'd bought and he was like holy shit these are great and you're my favorite passengers now, he was grabbing bags out of my wife's hand to carry them to the front door lol

At the Swiss Air lounge. The food is better than the United lounge (non-Polaris). I decided to fly Swiss Air back to see how the food is since United's food sucks. I paid the extra $300 for premium economy so the food should be decent.

Will land around dinner time so I think No 2 is making a reservation for Italian in Oakland or Berkeley.

I’ve never flown Swiss Air. So their premium economy food is better? On United, premium economy and regular economy food are the same. Which, I agree, is lousy.

The couple of times I few Premium economy on United the food was better, with real utensils. For this flight, Swiss Air let me know I got upgraded to Business class when I boarded. United would've never done this. Too many upgrade eligible people on each flight.

I read an article that flight attendants don't want to bother asking couples if they want to split up so maybe that's why I got upgraded.

I think but am not sure that on international flights, there is often overlap in their Polaris and Premium Economy meals. I both think and and sure that the main determinant of food quality on United is "did they source it at the foreign airport before the trip back to the US."

Government

DC Trojan's avatar

the city of DC and other local governments can't make up their minds if they are excited about Trump forcing federal staff back into the office or worried that all the jobs might be shipped out, challenging times I guess

Expand full comment
AndyPanda's avatar

Forcing staff whose' job can be done remotely back into inner city offices (City of Portland's new mayor is talking about this as well) is a stupid as any idea currently being floated. Increase costs, both time and money, for both the employer and employee, and decrease productivity and morale and the ability to recruit and retain. And contribute to already intolerable traffic and parking problems.

Expand full comment
DC Trojan's avatar

For us, locally, a lot of this is driven by the fact that DC gambled a long time ago on zoning / approving a TON of office space downtown, over and above what the federal government uses, so there's this belief that the city is entitled to demand that staff come back for their tax receipts to increase - because most of that office space cannot be converted to anything else. That means lots of wishcasting about how "back to office" would be good for local businesses when people stick around after work. You get a lot of the same thoughts from other localities (Montgomery country MD, Arlington VA) where there are clusters of offices that aren't being utilized.

I don't object to the idea of going into the office again - I've been 100% remote since March 2020 - but the idea that I would have to do it because DC hasn't been able to think of anything else in the meantime and there's a whole generation of elected officials and busybodies (e.g. the Washington Post editorial board) who think we all have to be monitored in person in real time five days a week, that rubs me the wrong way tbh.

Local businesses crying about no customers is part of what's driving it in PDX and some other towns (the majority of foot traffic in downtown are the homeless, and drug traffickers, but you can't say there is a drug culture problem!), but it's not in my job description to prop up poorly run businesses, or bad business models constructed on collecting ridiculous parking fees.

California freshman Mary-Ambre Moluh has been named the ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Moluh, who swam on two relays for France at the 2024 Summer Olympics, had a dominant performance at last week's Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis.
