We have a tortie. She drives Mrs Slug crazy by always walking in front of her, especially as she is about to head down a flight of stairs. Very petite and has a very faint meow. Demands to be petted.
The dark tortie we have is very attention- and affection-hungry. In fact, as I'm typing this she just jumped onto my shoulders, lol. She is just the biggest cuddle-bug.
The other one likes affection too, but she is prone to getting a bit overstimulated by it sometimes. Though, she's been getting better at tolerating it. She likes things on her own terms a bit more. But she's also very lovable and loves belly-rubs and butt-pats and is silly, sweet girl. She's my little pal. I love them both so much, hahah. So glad we got them.
"I really, really enjoy being (at Cal)." Wilcox said Wednesday on the Pac-12 Networks regarding his name being linked to the job. "... The support from our athletic administration and the school over the past four years has increased significantly." Wilcox in response to a question about whether he turned down the Oregon Job.
Just finished an oral argument before the Court of Appeal. I was surprised by how little questions they had for me and how much the justices jumped on opposing counsel. The Cal fan in me is resigned to losing because that Cal fan thinks the justices already were going to rule against us anyways.
Good luck! I am having issues with the 3rd DCA. We are now on Appellants 12th or 13th request for EOT and over 2.5 years since he file the NOA. Pro per, I can't believe how lenient the 3rd DCA is, to the point of allowing abusive litigants to make a damn mockery of it all.

As for taste, back then, for me, it was secondary to the effect yet very noticeable to keep it going. Probably skunky in retrospect if I still partook.

I make gumbo/jambalaya several times per year. Fresh ingredients - not frozen. I find that the biggest variable is the andouille sausages. Buy the sausages beforehand and try them out. Aidell's is okay, but not the best. Second is toasting your flour - either dry fry (no oil) or in roux form. I prefer in roux. Third, save your shrimp heads & casings and boil them in the chicken broth. Also, it should have okra in it.
I think Isaac Toups' recommendations to grind fresh pepper until your arm burns from fatigue and to mince garlic by violently smashing cloves with the side of a cleaver are funny.
West Side Story - the original is one of my favorite movies of all time - but Steven Spielberg's version surpassed all my expectations. The music is the same, but the choreography, cinematography, production, everything was amazing. I was crying every time Rachel Zegler sang. If you liked the original, this one is even better. The only negative is Ansel Elgort is kind of a dead piece of wood - but that also honors the original.
I saw Belfast last night in an actual movie theater. It was excellent, and it's just amazing what the people of Northern Ireland had to live with for so many years.
Recently read "Say Nothing" by Patrick Radden Keefe, (I would recommend it) and understand what you're saying - but for the cynical American in me, for all you heard about The Troubles - it wasn't all that many deaths. Yeah I know, I'm horrible.
Also, I didn't know that in the beginning the Catholics were inspired by the civil rights protests in America, but that went sideways quickly.
I mean it was just an entire part of the UK being effectively under military occupation while a terrorist backlash occasionally spilled over to England and Germany.
My younger daughter just finished a section in her AP comparative politics class about the UK which included a long segment on Northern Ireland and the Good Friday agreement. She found a picture of my dad in a brown suit circa 1981 & was like “he looks just like all those guys in the documentary we’ve been watching” and then narrowed in on John Hume - thank heavens it wasn’t someone like Martin McGuinness, that would have finished him off if he weren’t already dead
Rewatched Casino yesterday in it’s entirety for the first time in 25+ years. I’m in a gambling rut ever since Championship Saturday, so I could definitely use some Ace Rothstein juju & advice...dude could pick winners, except when it came to marriage, of course. JFC Sharon Stone nailed the role of Ginger...egads, what a mess she was...
But a solid Scorsese flick, nonetheless, tho a notch below some of his others...
yeah, I think the evidence is still unclear on that. it's so far causing fewer hospitalizations/deaths, but it seems like it's been sweeping through a younger, previously-infected population, at least in South Africa, so too many confounding variables to draw a conclusion at this time.
I really hope that omicron is a harbinger that COVID is tending towards the common cold theory when it comes to mutations. More transmissible, but less virulent than the original virus or even delta.

we were about 20 rows back on the lower level. great views and great atmosphere to start the game.
before the record, every time Steph touched the ball the crowd was on its feet. never seen anything like that before.
after Steph made the shot, they paused the game for a good 5+ min to let it all soak in and it was a nice moment of NBA history to witness.
in some ways it was good that the drama of the record ended early in the game and then i could go get food and beer and sit in my seat. the game itself was pretty lackluster. but there was also a sense of deflation after the record as if nothing else could top that at least for one night.
in a world gone mad, the world def had your back by giving Steph a shooting slump the last few games, to leave him two short. And was nice that it was over with like 5 min into the game. w/o the "ceremony" interrupting the game really. and they could go back to playing hoops w/o thinking about it anymore. If he had been 7 shy and was hunting 3s in Q4, that woulda been awkward. and then if he did it with 2 minutes to go (in a close game), would be weird to pause things.
Am I the only one who's glad this is over? Coverage of this has been a bit bonkers. Meanwhile C. Paul scores 20,000 points with 10,000 assists and get 1/100 the attention.
interesting. but I think that there's less, what?, panache associated with that. (at some point, he was the first with 18972 points and 9232 assists, I'd assume.) round numbers are just that.
I gave Steph's (artificial, round) 400 3s in a season a mulligan because it was > century more than the previous record, iirc (like 28y? 29x). so it was a fun number to chase.
not that it's not impressive, but not 'singular'? not sure what I'm driving at. a parallel to me (in an even more-goofy way) are things like: "draymond is the first player to have 11 pts, 8 asst, 9 Reb, 3 blocks, and 4 steals in one game". yeah, you can have fun with databases and figure all that out, but it's artificial. it's not like anyone was waiting for draymond to break (pippen's?) record of 11/7/7/2/2.
altho I don't think this record is all that. not like HR (season or career). 3P shots have only been a thing for a couple of decades, and really only big the last decade (due to Steph).
For Barry with HR, I knew 61 (McGwire was 70?) and 714 (Aaron). if you asked me last year what the 3P record was and who held it, I'd prob get Ray Allen, but have had no idea of the total. [But I still think if Reggie more than Ray when it comes to 3s.] Even last night, I don't think I could have told you the total (before the game).
I know 402 (soon to be 450 or something) for a single season, since getting to 400 was such a thing (and he got it on the last day). maybe when steph retires, 4181(?) will be a number people think about. kinda like Ripken's record. (altho I have no idea where he ended, tbh.)
damn! I knew I was gonna get called out on one of those numbers ;-) But was too lazy to verify...and no excuse, because while I'm old, I'm not so old for Babe's record to have been in my brain for 40 years prior to Hank breaking it. I think I was 10 (mid-70s, yeah?.
Chris Paul doesn't have Steph Curry's pub. This reminds me of when Mama Morton starts sporting a blonde dye job when Roxie Hart goes to trial. Meanwhile, Velma Kelly languishes in prison.
Indeed. Chris Paul fits beautifully into the legacy half-court game that had been established when he entered the league. Steph Curry forced everyone to play a different way (which Paul also fits perfectly well, but he's not the same gravitational force Curry is).
perhaps biased observation, but there is something about Curry that is more likable than others.
i am sure LeBron and Durant and Westbrook will all break various career records too, but i cant see them getting that same level of warm adoration on the road and universally.
I think LeBron also gets that kind of warm adoration these days (he didn't when he bolted to join the Heat, but that's died down over the years). The other guys, probably not.
I absolutely don't like LeBron, which my kids give me crap for. All started when he left for the Heat. Also don't like Harden either (more for his style of play).
The thing with Curry is that maybe regular people identify with him more than LeBron and KD. In that he's small and looks like he's 15. Makes all of us regularly sized people think we have a chance to do what he does.
Looks "regularly sized" - compared to the other players on the court. On the same topic I think that's part of the reason why soccer is so popular world wide, looks as if anyone can do it, all played by normal sized humans.
That's what drew me to distance running. I saw the marathon on the Olympics and thought that that didn't require any particular skill, just lots of training. Having a thin frame and success in some early races confirmed it.
yup...I can practice long 3s (and miss a bunch). but I can't practice dunks. or no-look passes. or smooth euro-steps. I guess I can for the last two, but it'd be weird, and require more people. the 3s can be just me and a hoop.
The atmosphere was electric for the first several minutes. If he couldn't get the record at home, I'm glad it was at MSG. There seemed to be a bit of a hangover after the record was broken, though. Did you see the Warriors jersey with 2974 that Reggie Miller and Ray Allen gave to him postgame? Steph looked pretty amused by that.
So wait, there's no cap on NIL rights? Does that mean that, for example, Nike could theoretically just sign an endorsement contract for whatever recruit Oregon wants?
why wouldn't they? Everything is above board now. The NCAA is toothless with NIL now. So we're going to have to pass the hat around here to start paying recruits
I get that everything is above board now. I am just curious if this deal with Barstool was contingent on him going to JSU. Why would Barstool have an interest in him going to JSU over say FSU?
Right?!? I love it...Daniel Stern, Dennis Quaid, Jackie Earle Haley from Bad News Bears OG....the preppy leader of the University crew is Ellis, from Die Hard, the guy trying to put the fux to Holly Genero McClain....
Depends on who you ask. I think it's a net negative day. I'm pretty bummed about losing Williams and significant doubts on Sidney, who I think are the two best of the class. Others on staff think Williams is not a big loss because he's more of a 1 technique than a 3. I, on the other hand, think he will make a fine P5 DT.
Since Wilcox is speaking in 5 minute, I think we're done. We're net -1. Signed everyone except Brown, Tuitele, and Sidney offset by the +2 of Ott & Ramsey. Brown and Sidney were known unstable commits. Tuitele was a surprise. So was Ott. Net-net, it's neutral - but it's not over.
Yes. Also, it was me who publicly predicted that I thought he'd be a safety, not a corner. He is tall, fast, athletic, and had raw man-coverage skills - so I thought he'd be a safety. But apparently not.
No QB, all snaps in the wildcat for all plays because we just don't know how to function in the post-Garbers era. Also, this is the pitch that gets Ott to sign at 1:30.
This is where it would be nice to have an OC with college experience, as many of these guys are picking up transfers they have experience with...former Hoosier Michael Penix being to latest, as he joins up with DeBoer in Seattle.
I think we strike out on an impact transfer, and it will be either Millner or Zach Johnson and plenty of growing pains, with a lower tier guy from the portal joining the program in a Glover type role...
Tho I’d be fine with Martinez, Phommacanhahn or Chubba Purdy...
I keep thinking about Jorts
Why when you can better use your time to think about torties?
😻😻 I have two torties (one regular and one dilute tortie) and they are both the absolute best girls
And clueless me had to look up tortie.
We have a tortie. She drives Mrs Slug crazy by always walking in front of her, especially as she is about to head down a flight of stairs. Very petite and has a very faint meow. Demands to be petted.

Pets can be a great addition to one's life. We've been lucky to have pets who we love and love us back. Can't improve on that.
True...the whole situation epitomizes:
1) weaponized incompetence
2) unpaid emotional labor
I would let Jorts keep locking himself into rooms. If he wants to get out badly enough he will figure it out.

I definitely would, I've played golf twice in the last 6 years and I cant wait to make a fool of myself.
Six Packs
pretty much anything, except a craft brewed IPA.
St George Botanivore, original Bombay in the clear bottle, 209, The Botanist, Sipsmith, Monkey 47
I prefer Terroir to Botanivore, but it's not a big preference. I also like Aviator.
Big fan of the Botanivore; Monkey 47 I didn’t find as amazing as the cost
Still pretty much Fall weather here and a local cidery has a hard cider made mostly with granny smith apples that hits the spot.
Lately a fair amount of Fort Point and Deschutes IPAs for drinking.
I have one but it's hidden under my fat
The Athletic Brewing Co. , Stratford CT- a varied line of N/A brews which I stumbled onto recently that I found profoundly tasty.
My in-laws and I have settled on Taiwan Beer as our beer of choice.
Firestone Walker 805. That or 21st Amendment Little Sumpin' Sumpin'.
I like 805 when the weather is warm; also a good beer for a party when you don't know what everyone wants.
Little Sumpin' Sumpin' is Lagunitas.
I stand corrected. Thanks. :)
Correct. Although the 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die gets a regular rotation in our household.
Don't think I've had Brew Free or Die yet. I'll have to give it a try.
my favorite 21st amendment beer was a special edition can called "Allies Win the War" mostly because of the can.
the beer was good too. brewed w/ dates or prunes or something strange.

Denogginizer double-IPA.
Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, a limited annual release in December. It's a fantastic barrel-aged stout from a Chicago-based brewery otherwise known for pretty basic IPAs.
i some in the store just this week i think. not sure i need a 6-pack of it, just one should be plenty
Agreed. I picked up a single a couple weeks ago and that was plenty. A six-pack would be dangerous.
Don't have mine anymore, need a post-Covid diet and a lot of crunches.

Henry Weinhards. not sure if you can still get them. i certainly never see it on east coast.
Oh, Henry's...
Back in the day there was the cheap stuff, the fancy stuff, and Henry's was the only option in between. We had millions of 'em.
After not seeing Henry's for many years, I had one a while back and thought it tasted skunky, like a Heineken does. It didn't taste anything like what I was expecting.
Oh yes, whilst living on Mt. Hood back in the day, I dropped the Blitz when Henry W's Private Reserve came out. Would keep up with the numbered batch counts on the label. As for taste, back then, for me, it was secondary to the effect yet very noticeable to keep it going. Probably skunky in retrospect if I still partook.
that was my beer of choice when I lived in PDX. That and Rainier pounders
And....unfortunately due to extraordinary over consumption, Olde English 800. Critical list hangovers.
"Bud" which is a callback to a Henry Weinhard's TV ad.

Haven't seen it on the shelves in the years. Quite popular in the dorms though back in the day.

Making da gumbo today...any tips, SGB?
I make gumbo/jambalaya several times per year. Fresh ingredients - not frozen. I find that the biggest variable is the andouille sausages. Buy the sausages beforehand and try them out. Aidell's is okay, but not the best. Second is toasting your flour - either dry fry (no oil) or in roux form. I prefer in roux. Third, save your shrimp heads & casings and boil them in the chicken broth. Also, it should have okra in it.
Can you suggest a full recipe? I've always wanted to make it but don't want to randomly try recipes.
Issac Toups (on youtube) has a pretty basic chicken and sausage gumbo that I make all the time.
https://youtu.be/76JXtB7JFQY
Oh right, I think you posted this a while back. I remember watching it and wanting to make Gumbo.
Similarly, after watching a couple of youtube videos making Tonkatsu Ramen, I want to do that over Christmas break as well.
Looks like I already had it bookmarked.
I keep my recipes on a computer via Recipe Keeper Pro. It scrapes recipes off the web, so I don't know the source.
so post it dude
Thank you! I like boiling the shrimp heads in the broth.
You only need a few minutes of boiling to get what you need. If you boil it too long, you'll overextract and it tastes like iodine.
I use Aidell's for my jambalaya, and I like it fine, but I'm certainly interested in other suggestions for andouille. What do you recommend?
I think Isaac Toups' recommendations to grind fresh pepper until your arm burns from fatigue and to mince garlic by violently smashing cloves with the side of a cleaver are funny.
I always remember watching Yan Can Cook and how he smashes garlic with a chinese cleaver. That's how I do it now.
I've always done garlic that way . .. because of Martin yan.
My grandmother's family owned an Oakland hardware store and they filmed a few of his cooking shows there...it was wild! He was so nice.

Very solid, but somehow more depressing than most of his.
Agreed...the Sharon Stone character, which she received her only Oscar nomination for, was very disturbing.
So disturbing. Love can be addiction, especially when the person that you love doesn’t love you back.

Today in Omicron
apparently the regular vaccines suck against it, yet the variant seems to be less virulent.
Not sure that's true? It's also possible that it SEEMS less virulent BECAUSE the prior vaccine protection is kicking in once people get infected.
yeah, I think the evidence is still unclear on that. it's so far causing fewer hospitalizations/deaths, but it seems like it's been sweeping through a younger, previously-infected population, at least in South Africa, so too many confounding variables to draw a conclusion at this time.

Chris Paul is not as good as Steph Curry. He's great, but not as great. And definitely not nearly as flashy.
and he didn't change the game. I agree with Shaq on that...there's "great" and then there's "revolutionary"
Indeed. Chris Paul fits beautifully into the legacy half-court game that had been established when he entered the league. Steph Curry forced everyone to play a different way (which Paul also fits perfectly well, but he's not the same gravitational force Curry is).
So glad you were there, HSB! The atmosphere seemed electric.
perhaps biased observation, but there is something about Curry that is more likable than others.
i am sure LeBron and Durant and Westbrook will all break various career records too, but i cant see them getting that same level of warm adoration on the road and universally.
Yeah, I think older fans were rubbed the wrong way by The Decision, but younger fans don't care (or are too young to remember).
The thing with Curry is that maybe regular people identify with him more than LeBron and KD. In that he's small and looks like he's 15. Makes all of us regularly sized people think we have a chance to do what he does.
"regularly sized" . . . he's 6'3"!
I think it's also in part because his game is so joyful. Jordan (for example) won a ton of admiration, but did he every look like he was having _fun_?
Yeah this as well. He looks like he's having fun playing.
Steph looked pretty amused by that.
we didnt hang around after the game. but saw internet evidence of it. family was tired and wanted to catch the next train home.
Steph getting it was a foregone conclusion. Honestly, I was just cheering for you to see it in person.
we were fortunate that the timing worked out just right

rumors of allegedly being paid $1M by Barstool Sports to sign with JSU
So wait, there's no cap on NIL rights? Does that mean that, for example, Nike could theoretically just sign an endorsement contract for whatever recruit Oregon wants?
That is correct. CFB, the ultimate and highest form of capitalism in sports.
Why would Barstool Sports want him to sign with JSU? What’s the connection between them?
Because they want to do a documentary with him and Prime.
why wouldn't they? Everything is above board now. The NCAA is toothless with NIL now. So we're going to have to pass the hat around here to start paying recruits
I get that everything is above board now. I am just curious if this deal with Barstool was contingent on him going to JSU. Why would Barstool have an interest in him going to JSU over say FSU?
it very much is. I don't know what or any connections Barstool has with JSU, but those were the terms of the deal.
I'm sure Deion is in the middle of it somehow.
THAT'S an interesting question...

There he is. Curlee Thomas signs.

Damn it now we need to find a Larry and a Moe.
This class doesn't seem to be all that bad...no SGB?
- Williams (to TCU)
? Tuitele, but expected to sign
+ Ott
+ Ramsey
- Sidney (not signing early)
Depends on who you ask. I think it's a net negative day. I'm pretty bummed about losing Williams and significant doubts on Sidney, who I think are the two best of the class. Others on staff think Williams is not a big loss because he's more of a 1 technique than a 3. I, on the other hand, think he will make a fine P5 DT.
Fucking hell. Damonic Williams signed with TCU.
Geez, let Sonny have him...imagine being in line behind this guy at Top Dog....they'd kick his a$$ outta there....
Damonic Williams is the Cheez-Its Bowl of recruiting.

OT Ramsey signs with Cal.

So... good or bad today?
Since Wilcox is speaking in 5 minute, I think we're done. We're net -1. Signed everyone except Brown, Tuitele, and Sidney offset by the +2 of Ott & Ramsey. Brown and Sidney were known unstable commits. Tuitele was a surprise. So was Ott. Net-net, it's neutral - but it's not over.
I miscounted. Curlee Thomas is still expected to sign, but the loss of Williams is a gut punch. Net negative for the cycle.
Ott signs with Cal.

Yes I like what you've done here....
Jeremiah Earby signs. Others were trying to poach him in the 11th hour. https://twitter.com/CalFootball/status/1471139757488947202
Is that because some thought he might switch or be better as a WR? I’m glad we kept him.
Yes. Also, it was me who publicly predicted that I thought he'd be a safety, not a corner. He is tall, fast, athletic, and had raw man-coverage skills - so I thought he'd be a safety. But apparently not.
Earby says in his video that he's a corner.

Flagstaff is a pretty cool town...
If we net to +/- zero recruits for the day, I'll be very happy. I expect net minus 1.
New Cal starting QB prediction for when we take the field against UCD
If we don't get a new OC, I could see it being Millner.
No QB, all snaps in the wildcat for all plays because we just don't know how to function in the post-Garbers era. Also, this is the pitch that gets Ott to sign at 1:30.
My heart says Martinez, my head says Plummer.
As soon as I heard Martinez needed shoulder surgery and will be out until summer, I have been a pass. I want Plummer.
Agreed. A guy that isn't taking reps until fall figures to struggle in the passing game with Musgrave's O.
Jack Plummer
Nice bring...I could see this.
Kedon Slovis
Would Slovis have two years of eligibility left?
I think he would
