WaPo follows the grim fate of a Russian brigade from near the Arctic circle, from higher-end troops, to having 40% of their soldiers killed and lost 70% of their heavy equipment in the first 9 months of the war, and then backfilling only some of them with untrained mobiks. They can't get their soldiers to stay on the line because they know they're doomed to die because they'll never leave the line.

Angie was the name of one of my maids. She was very sweet. She went overseas to earn money. Her relatives raised her two daughters back in the Philippines. Her hope was to educate them so that they could escape poverty. The oldest daughter had a child young and it derailed her education. She was in her final year of working with me as she was getting to retire. I remember the day that she got the news that her youngest daughter got pregnant and would drop out of college as a senior. She paid for two kids to go to college for nearly the whole time, neither of which graduated. The sound of a woman crying - gut wrenching bawling - because her whole life's work and plans went went down the drain is something I'll never forget.

It supports one of my main mantras that I say to my kid: "beware of life altering event"

The first time I returned from living in Asia - main lessons learned about my time abroad and re-integrating. 1. No one really cares that much about your time in China. 2. Don't talk to people about airports - they really haven't been to ones either as nice or as bad as you have 3. Don't talk about your hired help.

Expand full comment

Hah! I think #1 is almost universal to any experience. I remember in high school I studied abroad in France, lived w a French family. I was super excited to tell my friends back in Monterey about it when I returned at the beginning of junior year. But if I said anything more than “it was great” or some similar one liner, they would completely tune out. If you want to wax about stuff like that, you need to find someone that has done something similar and have a beer w them.

Re #3, the hired help stuff in Asia is hard for a gringo to comprehend. I visited a buddy from Cal at his place in Singapore and he had like a whole team of servants. He kept trying to tell me it was totally normal there but I was like, the servants don’t have servants tho right?

Totally cool…and again, I didn’t hate it…meh and blah are still passing grades for me…Jimmy C is much more critical of Cal sports than movies. I probably like it better if I saw pre-COVID, as the response would’ve eerily reminded me of this…the one thing this flick did have going is Gwyneth Paltrow as patient 0…haven’t always felt so, but. rather miserable woman.

That was my issue…it needed to be a 2.5-3-hour movie to really tell the story, which it probably would have been in 2020. But in 2011, it was 100 minutes, and as such, it just felt rushed.

Cugel and I never agree on movies, tho, so the fact that we have such different takes is not the least bit surprising. We’re a little more in line on tv shows, but film wise, we’re pretty far apart. I gave it a solid C, maybe because I saw it after having lived it…just kinda blah. Outbreak was a better movie.

This season most of the episodes don’t even have Ian and Poppy together onscreen. Were they filming stuff that necessitated that? It’s notable because their relationship and interplay is the heart of the show. It is a significant step down in quality this season. The plot has also kind of vanished, but maybe they are just using the first few episodes to tune the piano. (I hate that kind dead air piano tuning though, if you are a professional writer you should be better than that)

49ers clinch NFC West via 21-13 victory over the Seahawks. The game wasn't even as close as the score as the Niner defense stuffed the run, pushed the Seahawks into passing situations, and then unleashed their fearsome pass rushers to harass Geno Smith. Purdy is a good-enough game manager with skills beyond Mr. Irrelevant, but let's not pretend that he'd be a world beater on another team. It also helps that Shanahan doesn't call plays like Bill Musgrave.

Kneeled multiple times after reaching the 1 yard line. It was a 15 point win in actuallity.

Purdy is better than most realized, but it also helps to have a really good offense around him, and at least one of the best defenses in football, so you don't need to put up 45 to be confident of being able to win.

First time in a decade the 49ers have beat the Hawks 2 in a row.

It was a good evening to be a 9er, even at the expense of several of my cousins who are "12s".

While he’s probably not a world beater on another team, he could very well be the Niners franchise QB. Wild.

Along with Judge, the Yanks have guaranteed a lot of money and years to two talented players in their 30’s that have been hurt as often as they’ve been healthy. Rodon especially - he had a helluva season in the prove it year for the Giants, but that was just the 2nd time in 8 years he stayed healthy enough to even approach 30 starts.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-shuts-down-rulebook-loophole-raiders-had-been-exploiting-for-past-two-weeks-per-report/

For the past two weeks, the Raiders have been taking advantage of what appeared to be a loophole in the NFL rulebook, but they won't be able to do that anymore because the league has officially shut things down.

Back in Week 13, the Raiders started using a holder for their kickoffs, which was kind of odd, because teams will usually only use a holder when the ball won't stay on the tee due to bad weather. The Raiders past two games were both played indoors, so bad weather definitely wasn't an issue.

They didn't much like the Troy Taylor hire- though they didn't mention his stint as OC for Pac12/UT. Pretty sure we all have more faith in TT.

Expand full comment

Honestly, I do not. He has no HC experience at the FBS level, neither G5 or P5. And stanfurd has no NIL, and while their players can use the portal to transfer out, they are severely limited with transfers in as all students have to go through the same application process. They already have 16 players in the portal including most of their starting OL.

Expand full comment

There are rumors that there might be some modernization and common sense applied to the admissions process, which is needed there generally. But without getting NIL organized (its not like Stanford alums, friends, neighbors, business associates, etc. can't afford it!), nothing else is going to help much.

Expand full comment

Maybe SBF and Elizabeth Holmes can get together and fund the Stanford NIL initiative. I’m sure all the players will get their money and what is promised to them.

Expand full comment

They could easily get an NIL collective off the ground and have it well funded within seconds but there’s no way they change admission standards for transfer football players. That’s been their whole recruiting selling point, the prestige of being admitted.

Expand full comment

They could have the best NIL in the country quite easily. But the apathy level of students, nearer term alums and folks on the Peninsula is on par with, or greater than Berkeley. Either the latest discovery, new startup, or folks getting funded and thinking about their options are the main things going on. The gridiron is a tertiary thought.
