Rec drugs. (Beer and good whiskey, tequila, rum, brandy, etc. are NOT in this category).

Responded to far too many 911 calls that resulted from these to think there is any place for them.

Gum chewing.

Mrs Slug hates gum chewing. Cannot abide it.

Expand full comment

Same.

Expand full comment

Is it the annoying smacking of uncouth gum chewers or is it the fear of gum getting lose on the carpet or furniture?

Expand full comment

The sound, the smell and the look. Worst are gum poppers and snappers.

From Jailhouse Tango (Chicago, the movie)-

You know how people have these little habits that getcha down?

Like Bernie.

Bernie liked to chew gum—no, not chew—pop!

Well, I come home this one day and there's Bernie layin' on the couch, chewin'—no, not chewin'—poppin'!

So I said to him—I said, "Bernie, you pop that gun one more time."

And he did.

So I took the shotgun off the wall and I fired two warning shots... into his head.

Expand full comment

In Mrs Slug's case, it is primarily the sound of gum chewing because it is rarely, if ever, done with mouth closed. Th fear of chewed gum getting loose is a bonus annoyance/fear.

Mrs. Doubtfire: "No, I don't, but I did. Oh dear, I found the best way to keep from smoking again and lighting up is to be around those who do smoke. I have to randomly ingest just a little bit of nicotine and it steels my wool. (to Stu) Oh, and I know you're Mr. Health. Bless you for putting yourself in harm's way."

Dodgers' 2025 rotation will be insane.

2024: Yamamoto, Buehler, Miller, Glasnow, Sheehan, maybe Grove and mid-summer Kershaw.

2025: Ohtani, May, and Gonsolin should be ready.

Expand full comment

And by 2025 there should be a few other RHPs currently in the minors, including Knack and Frasso if May and Gonsolin aren't ready. I could see May become a bullpen piece with his 2 TJs so close together.

Expand full comment

Frasso and Knack are on the 40-man now. Should see them appear sometime in 2024.

Imagine Shohei and May doing setup and closing if the Dodgers decide to not risk Ohtani doing starter innings.

And Evan Philips and Graterol have 3 more years pre-arb. The bullpen is going to be lights out again, hopefully.

Why should any other team even bother playing this season?

Expand full comment

Let’s play the games… Ohtani can only DH, Yamamoto looks epic in Japan but it is a pretty decent step up in competition to come here, Glasgow is always hurt (almost not worth mentioning him among these others), Freeman is 34 now and even Betts is 31…

Expand full comment

In other words it seems totally possible that in a few years these contracts are duds and the Dodgers competitive window will have passed as Freeman&Betts enter the late stage of their careers

Oh and Ohtani has had two

TJs now! Not a great indicator of longevity…

I think this is good for baseball though. You kind of need a bad guy / heavy to keep everyone interested over the long season. No one ever really filled the void the Yanks left when they collapsed in the 2003 WS and ended up crumbling apart thereafter. Dodgers will sell a lot of tickets for sure!

Because Dave Roberts will still manage to mismanage the greatest assemblage of pitching talent known to man at just the worst possible time in the postseason, and you want to be there to capitalize on the situation.

If Rudy were to sue Trump for said fees, they could potentially file a notice of lien in the lawsuit or attempt to serve a writ of execution on Trump. In California, a creditor can do a judgment debtor exam against anyone who owes money to the debtor (call a third-party debtor exam) and potentially get a turnover order from said third party, if the third party is holding money or assets due to the debtor.

The subpeen of RNC Chair McDaniel's apparently has paid off. After Trump lost Michigan 154k votes, Trump, McDaniel, and state legislature leaders allegedly conspired to not certify the various county elections. On a leaked audio, Trump is heard telling the two GOP election officials to not certify the election and that Trump would pay for their lawyers. Michigan has filed a case against the 15 false electors (one more flipped and isn't being prosecuted), but it's a bridgehead to other potential charges of bigger fish.

Apropos: one of the two Wayne County electors was a fervent GOP supporter. Wayne County went 68/31 Biden and he still refused to sign the county election. And perhaps related to his belief of the GOP party, of course he was anti-vax and then died of Covid pneumonia a year later.

Boca Raton Bowl: Cuse (favored by 5.5) vs. USF. Syracuse was - without their QB1 due to a shoulder injury. Syracuse started their Tight End Dan Villari at QB. Villari ran 11 times and attempted 11 passes completing four to his own team and two to USF. The Orange managed only 159 yards and were down 31-0 at half. They lost 45-0.

My expert legal analysis: This blows!

Expand full comment

Can we renegotiate our revenue share if the big boppers leave?

Expand full comment

See, I think that FSU is the "bell cow" as it were for UNC and Clemson. All three want out of the ACC in a case of buyer's remorse w/r/t ACC TV contract money.

I think those three institutions are counting on some sort of public outcry to help them make their case, with the intention of pointing slyly to Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big XII for the SEC. Here's the salient point of why this situation and that situation are very different - Texas & Oklahoma had only two years at most remaining on the GOR to the Big XII. It was more than possible to negotiate an exit fee and early exit penalty while having their GOR restored to them; it was quite doable as events proved.

FSU, UNC, and Clemson have a different mountain to climb. Their GOR runs through June 2036, which is another 12 seasons of football, another 13 seasons of basketball including the current season. FSU, UNC, and Clemson are probably committed to the ACCC through June 2025 at a minimum.

I could easily see that the penalty for leaving with 11 seasons left on the GOR being upwards of $500MM. Maybe FSU can find that kind of cash. Maybe UNC and Clemson could find it, too. But I think it gets complicated in that I think the ACC would then collapse because ESPN would want to renegotiate its TV contract with the ACC and would offer less dollars than they are paying now. I think it is possible that there will be never be enough votes to allow FSU, UNC, and Clemson to leave the conference. It will be like penalizing yourself just to be rid of an unhappy partner.

This is a fundamental reason why I think there will be shakeout in FBS football *at a minimum* and there will probably be a fundamental re-defining of the relationship between academic institutions and intercollegiate athletics. It would not surprise me at all to find that football gets spun off or severed from academic institutions into a minor league wholly funded by the NFL.

Expand full comment

And this is why I am not too concerned with our move to ACC. The college football scenery is constantly changing and we just did what is best at the current moment.
