The San Diego Zoo is great. Huge, and lots of variety.
The zoo in Salt Lake City is under-rated. It's just around the corner from Rice-Eccles stadium, and makes a great day visit if you are in town for a night game.
Because it’s nearby and accessible I like the National Zoo. They’ve had giant pandas most of the time I’ve lived here and I like to see them out in their yard in the morning when they’re typically active.
The DC aquarium closed some years ago. It was in the lower level of the Department of Commerce headquarters. The building is older and when they did some renovations to the building the aquarium closed. Like you say, it was pretty small and it had entered into some kind of arrangement with Baltimore so moved things there. Per Wiki, before it closed it was the longest continuously operating aquarium in the U.S.

Happy Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, & Day After Christmas Day (NC, SC, TX).
Tell the DBD your favorite aquarium and/or zoo
It was the old Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, before the remodel. New one is nice too, but not quite the same charm.
The one in Boston is quite nice too.
Yeah, the old one at the CA Academy of Sciences was my favorite as a kid. But, hard to beat Monterey Bay Aquarium.
And of course I leave out Monterey Bay, which is obviously the gold standard.

I like the National Zoo a lot. No admission fee!
There is also a “National aquarium” in DC which is quite small. The Baltimore aquarium is much better.
My favorite aquarium is Long Beach. Much smaller than Monterey, but very bright and colorful.
