ASU could be the worst 8 win team in the country...

Expand full comment

Jayden Daniels is a younger Chase Garbers. Interpret that how you will.

Expand full comment

Good comp...Daniels maybe has a better arm...maybe?? But like Chase he’s solid & steady, and can make plays with his legs, but he sure doesn’t seem electric out there...

I wondered how ASU won 8...the schedule was dogschitt...they had a nice win at UCLA - highlight of the year. Otherwise, it was a parade of really bad teams: S Utah, UNLV, CO, SC, WA, Stan, U of A...missed Oregon and Cal, tho they probably beat us bc despite practicing v. Garbers everyday, the Bears usually struggle to contain mobile QBs.

This SHOULD be our blueprint for next year...we’ll see.

Expand full comment

In all honesty, with our schedule this year, ASUs season is basically what our floor should have been this season.

Man, the PAC 12 really was dog schitt this year...to not bowl with a 4 year starter at QB, returning starters at the skill positions and an experienced O-line is a real pisser.

Expand full comment

It really was, this should have been Cals year to really compete for the Pac 12 north and have a winning conference record.

Expand full comment

Yup…and it’s a real sign of the state of the program that the 2nd biggest highlight of the year is that the HC didn’t leave for another job!

This Purdue QB is damn good. Jack Plummer losing the starting job to him is nothing to shake a stick at...

Tho he did just throw a poor pick.

Expand full comment

I’ll take a poor pick every once and a while if a QB is making plays with his arm and has that confidence to just trust their eyes and arm.

Winter driving. It snowed where I lived in California, but I wasn't commuting through it and on icy roads on a day to day basis. Leave earlier, drive slower. Invest in dedicated snow tires if financially able to do so. It's not just the tread, siping, and/or studs. The material is designed to remain flexible in colder temperatures, where standard all-seasons will become stiff when the temperature drops below a certain threshold and lose their effectiveness.

Getting my kids tested today, they need a negative test to go back to preschool on Monday. They have cold like symptoms so hopefully it is just a cold and they are negative.

How easy is it to find a test near you? My kids need one before going back to college as well. No 2 isn't going back for a couple of weeks so scheduling his will be easier than for No 3 at UCSC. The first 2 weeks are at home so he could wait until next weekend to go back.

It was easy for us. Called our healthcare provider yesterday and was able to take them to the drive through testing center today.

I know the County of San Diego testing centers are more difficult and the lines/wait is longer.

My wife and I are going to do a take home test. San Diego is handing out one free kit to each person at the county libraries.

Vandy is postponing the start of the spring semester one week. Now it starts on Mon Jan 17, which is MLK day, and they won't have classes that day to allow the community to participate in the virtual celebration. They still are planning to have classes in-person and increased testing. And strongly suggest boosters. We'll see how in-person classes (if they stay with it) goes.

Expand full comment

Penn is virtual for 2 weeks, then in-person, hopefully. UCSC is also virtual for 2 weeks starting Monday. Also looks like UCSC is requiring a self-administered test within 48 hours of arrival on campus and then a post arrival test.

Expand full comment

Looks like both UCSC and Vandy are requiring a negative test before coming back to campus. UCSC doesn't specify that it cannot be an at-home test so I think that's what we're going with. Going to get Anthem to send another one out.

I was able to order rapid tests from Amazon that will get here early next week. There is not one to be found in a drugstore anywhere in the area.

I belong to One Medical, and they operate a super convenient drive through test site in the city. For this whole time, you've always been able to get a next day appointment. Just looked (out of curiosity), and the next available appointment is in 7 days. Things are bad out there.

Expand full comment

I can't tell if people are trying to confirm their rapid at-home test or just going straight to appointments because, as you note, buying tests locally is such a challenge. We've got 7 packs in the house but instead of frequently testing I think we're going to have to default to "test when possibly symptomatic" and "test to return" because we just don't have enough to be testing all the time (like when the 17 y.o. returns to school next week)

Expand full comment

I asked some friends in Hong Kong if rapid, at-home tests are available. It seems like they're in all the pharmacies, so I'm going to pick up a handful before heading back to the US

Expand full comment

Anthem is offering one free rapid test mailed to the person. It does take a few days to get to you so it can be done as a just in case thing. I got one and it looks like the expiration date is within a month or so. So kinda useful I guess.

Don't Look Up. (Netflix 9/19 WNB). It was exactly as advertised on the DBD. Characters that were caricatures. Fantastic cast with really good performances on a bad script. The hit-you-over-the-head political commentary was flat and didn't travel very far. It's a high concept movie that needed a few more re-writes. apple music has an "essentials" section (I assume Spotify does something like this) where there are suggestions for various albums you could listen to - I went into the "albums to remember or discover from the past" and it should have come with a warning about how old I am based on how far back I was going with albums I bought when they came out.

I ended up listening to Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden & was struck that it could just as easily have been classed as stoner metal than as grunge (or grunge adjacent). Holds up pretty well, either way.

I never understood the generic labeling of a city's music scene much like grunge. The bands most associated with it have very distinct sounds whereas the hollywood/ sunset strip scene were pretty much bedazzled clones of one another and all fit neatly under the glam umbrella.

Eugenia Duke created Duke's Mayo in SC, but then they moved to NC. Duke's Mayo - which actually tastes like mayonnaise if you created it from scratch - is the sponsor for today's bowl game between Carolina and the team that puts Carolina on its jersey. The winner will have a mediocre season. The loser will have a losing record. If that's not Carolina, I don't know what is.

Brock Purdy closed out a disappointing season with a brutal final game, culminating with one final head scratcher on his last collegiate snap.

4th down, :50 seconds left, need a TD to tie...he scrambles for the first down, and after passing the line to gain, he is stripped of the ball. He falls on it, but is now 3 yards short. Guy’s got a ten cent head...good riddance.

Oregon rolled up injuries at an alarming rate all season, which really caught up with them down the stretch. It isn't an excuse, injuries happen everywhere, but it is at least a partial explanation. And an indictment of a certain buffoon of a strength & conditioning coach that got an astonishing amount of screen time on the sideline, even last night. What looks like will be a total overhaul in Eugene will be very compelling to watch unfold, regardless of your opinion of the Ducks.

Ohio St week 2 vs Ohio St week 8 were two very different animals. Early on in the season there was talk about benching CJ Stroud who went on to have a pretty damn good year. Once he gelled with the offense and that trio of receivers, they would have beaten Oregon had that game been scheduled for later in the season. We all saw how fraudulent Oregon was as the season wore on.
