I am not crapping my pants about Lincoln Riley. He just continued an elite program that he inherited at OU. That’s a far cry from the task at hand at SC.
My mom wants a storage shed in the backyard and her contractor is trying to get her to make it bigger and adding a room with a bathroom for either a guest house or an office space. I'm trying to talk her out of it since it really isn't necessary.
I would still do it. You can use it as a backyard lounge and bathroom when having family over for get togethers. As JC said, it will help increase the value of the house and property, especially in California.
It’s a little extra money but IMO, so much more useful than a shed.
But it’ll improve the value of the house immensely, whether she rents it out or not. A little $$$ & time now, sure, but ADU’s are like gold, esp in CA...AirBnB short-term even..... I’d recommend at least talking to someone about it.....
Most counties and cities in California have waived any fees and permits for ADUs as they really want people to build them. It’s an easy way for the city to promote infilling and increase potential rental housing.
Santa Barbara has absolutely NOT done that, unfortunately.
Some pretentious municipalities (like SB) don’t like to be told what to do by the state of CA and make the process incredibly cumbersome. Hell, the whole area fights new building at every turn, even student housing...(that accident waiting to happen Soviet style dorm, notwithstanding).
Their gift to you is the ability to make it, but G-damn right they’re going to get their $$$.
My advice from personal experience is start the process sooner than you think, if you’re interested .
I moved up from San Diego in the end of Jan, 2020. I started the whole process around St Patty’s Day, ‘20....I just got the approval mid-Nov.
Now, the Santa Barbara building department IS a notoriously slow & vicious animal, and we had a hiccup that cost me $$$, which added time too...but in my experience these building departments don’t make things easy, and they’re pissed that the state of California is mandating ADU’s...
Are you in SD? I know the city has waived a lot of the permitting for these. I’m looking at trying to build something in the 200-250 square foot range studio/office/guest house with a small bathroom and shower.
I’m in Santa Barbara...just got approval from the city for 160 sq ft studio, with a stand up shower & toilet....basically like an Airstream trailer in the back yard, but an apartment.
Ya it’s super little...the team is all super-pumped for the project bc it’s the tiniest one they’ve ever seen....which sadly, I’ve maybe heard before....hahaha
Nice, I hope it also looks like an Airstream trailer. Are you hiring a contractor? New water meter and electric panel or are you just coming off the main house?
Now that Ghislaine Maxwell is guilty, she might have some evidence to help reduce her sentence. Prince Andrew denies the rape allegations against him but nevertheless wants to seal all evidence in that case. I'm not saying he's guilty, but JFC does he act the part.
(CNN)Betty White, the self-described "lucky old broad" whose sweetly sarcastic senior citizen characters were a beloved fixture on TV shows and movies such as "The Golden Girls," "Boston Legal" and "Hot in Cleveland," died Friday, her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas told People magazine in a statement.
At 99, she was just weeks away from celebrating her 100th birthday on Jan. 17.
"Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever," Witjas said. "I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don't think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again."
Those days are long gone for me too. My marriage is a lot older than most college students. Fond memories of my late teens and twenties. Fonder ones of my time with the missus.
The NYE plans with our little pod got nixed bc our host tested positive. I haven’t seen her but for a couple of minutes outdoors Tues...but looks like it’s another NYE with me & the pups.
The observation that Omicron is milder seems to be holding up thusfar. Might provide the covidiot yutzes the immunity we desperately need them to get.
Just glad that I'm on vacation now (surrounded by vaxxed and boosted family) and any potential hospitalization surge is someone else's problem. Some of our vaxxed/boosted staff has caught it and it seems to be cold-like symptoms. As much as I'd appreciate administration having to bear a bigger brunt of staff shortages for once, the CDC shortening isolation time for healthcare workers is probably reasonable in workplaces with enforced vaccine mandates.
Bob Wachter just tweeted out a quick UCSF update -- hospitalizations there have doubled in the last week, from 20 to 45, but so far very heavily weighted to non-ICU, thankfully. 😬
UCSF tests everyone who comes in for a procedure, and 8.4% of those asymptomatic patients are positive, which is how/why this is spreading so crazily. If 1 in every 12 people walking around the city feeling OK is actually sick/infectious, it's time for this kid to just stay home for a few weeks.
Of the people who come to UCSF for a test, (they run one of the biggest drive-through clinics) a whopping 31% are positive.
He also recently posted an optimistic thread about where he thinks this will go once the Omicron wave subsides. Echoes a lot of what I've been thinking, and I think it's pretty big for someone as cautious as Wachter to be saying stuff like this.
And because Trump never wants to admit he's wrong, he doubles down on his vaccine flip-flop by claiming he created the vaccines that "were supposed to take five to 12 years". What a maroon.
I think his point is that some of those players looked uninjured the previous game and all of a sudden a few of them out, and hmm...now they don't have enough players.
I am not crapping my pants about Lincoln Riley. He just continued an elite program that he inherited at OU. That’s a far cry from the task at hand at SC.

DBD does indeed mean Daily Bear Dump.
I believe it is Daily Bear Dump.
Has anyone built or added an ADU to their property?
If so, how big and what did it cost you?
My mom wants a storage shed in the backyard and her contractor is trying to get her to make it bigger and adding a room with a bathroom for either a guest house or an office space. I'm trying to talk her out of it since it really isn't necessary.
Chances are it would be a good investment?
She doesn't care about renting it out. She just wanted it as a home office or a place for someone to sleep when everyone is here.
A little casita....
I told her it wasn't worth the extra money for the 3-4 nights a year it would be used. Just build the shed for stuff.
Careful. It could increase the property owner's property tax bill. It may be worth doing a little research.
Just sayin'.

If it’s just a shed, cool. I mean, technically you’re supposed to get permits for pretty much anything....which sucks.
I’m interested in this for the future, in case I can get my kids to build one for me 😁
My advice from personal experience is start the process sooner than you think, if you’re interested .

Always get a permit, too!
I am in process now and can share my story. Others are probably more builder savvy, tho...I am not.
What’s protocol for exchanging info, folks?

160 sq. feet isn't very much at all. We're discussing the replacement of a 12'x14' storage shed that burned in the Glass Fire. That's 168 sq. feet.
Ya it’s super little...the team is all super-pumped for the project bc it’s the tiniest one they’ve ever seen....which sadly, I’ve maybe heard before....hahaha

Saw a WaPo alert on Betty White's passing earlier today. My first thought was, "This is a rotten end to a bad year."
Glad that Betty White was around to grace America's collective life with some wit and humor. She was a treasure.
I believe the DBD was glitched out and only paid subscribers were allowed to comment. I reset everything and it should be working now.
Thanks Leland. That's my fault.

My MIL has Covid and is staying with us and I’m guessing that’s how my daughter got Covid.
Ugh. Here’s to a safe & speedy recovery.
The NYE plans with our little pod got nixed bc our host tested positive. I haven’t seen her but for a couple of minutes outdoors Tues...but looks like it’s another NYE with me & the pups.
Yep, we didn’t have big plans because of Covid and kids but we were going to a friends but it looks like it will just be a low key NYE at home…again…
The major disruption is this means no preschool for the next two weeks for either kid.
Busy house for the next couple a weeks...
Yep and my MIL is now stuck her for another 5 days as she can’t fly out now.
Does she have symptoms? Might be longer than 5 days if so. Godspeed.
