I was going to try to get a pair of the rerelease of the Nike Griffeys but I missed them. Started on a call right at 7 and totally forgot about it. I even had the page up. The varsity royal colors are coming later this year so hopefully I get a pair.

Mild (upper 40s & low 50s) and rainy, but dryer later in the week for a couple days. The ice storm has passed, and more people have regular power again (vs generators) than not. Hundreds of hours of cleanup and repair left to do in lots and lots of places.

Kind of crazy watching snow all over Texas and also parts of Louisiana and Mississippi and big snow in Memphis. DC got a fair bit of ice on Saturday afternoon and evening but it mostly melted pretty early on Sunday.

30 Coins (Monedas) on His Body Odor Max...final episode of 8 drops today...a Spanish ditty, part of HBO Europe...graphic show surrounding the Catholic Church, Judas’ 30 pieces of silver-lore, demonic possession, ya, know, your typical trifecta of intensity that’s fun for the whole family...had one of those gripping opening scenes that kind of made you go “well that’s wild!”, and then rolled into one of the more graphic/disturbing opening-credit montages you’ll see.

The Sinner - Netflix/USA Network, season 3...Bill Pullman is solid, and a character that’s far removed from his turn in 80’s classic Ruthless People.

The Americans - on a roll now, flying thru season 3...thanks again for tout, Cugel!!

Your Honor - finished last night...Bryan Cranston, New Orleans...

Next up: S1, ep. 2 of City on a Hill.

Altered Carbon S1 (15/19): The middle act of this season was really, really great but didn't end great. Still a good season and worth a watch for Sci Fi fans.

Ozark S3 (18/19). Clever writing follows the Breaking Bad mold very closely and does a really, really great job. Binge watched the whole season this weekend. It's not perfect, but it's hard to complain about one of the best series I've seen in a year.

Kingdom S1. (5/19) Make-up and production values are high, with a few really great moments. However, I'm losing patience with the melodramatic acting, plodding soap opera pace, under-directed bloated barge of a show. It's the Korean love child of Days of Our Lives and The Walking Dead.

Taco Chronicles (S3). (15/19). For foodies, it's an unbeatable look at Mexican staple. Inspiring, but a bit formulaic. It's inspired me to finally make Cochinita Pibil this week. I've bought achiote powder, fresh banana leaves, and a fresh heritage pork shoulder. I've been wanting to make this for 2 decades after Robert Rodriguez made pibil as a DVD extra on Once Upon a Time in Mexico and featured it in the movie.

Personally, achiote paste is better than the powder

Fan Controlled Football League got some press for their first weekend of play this weekend (all matches are on Twitch and there is some weirdness on how fans can vote for plays). Johnny Manziel and his Zappers are edged by Beast, owned (and named after, I would think) by Marshawn Lynch. Marloshawn Franklin is the only guy in the 4-team roster that I recognize as a Cal alum. Apparently, the roster will change weekly outside a 2-3 franchise players. I guess this is technically a Pro League because the players are getting some money to play this weird, no-kicking, 50-yard indoor field version of football.

WSwim: Last month, before Cal started the scored swimming season, it was ranked #7. The Bears destroyed USC and UCLA on Jan 29-31st. Stanfurd was ranked #8, but Cal absolutely crushed them 178-117 this weekend. Cal is now #1 in the nation (suck it, Texas & Georgia).

WVB: The good news is the rebuilding Bears won their first match of the season on Friday vs. #15 'furd. The bad news is they then played poorly on Sunday and lost to 'furd.

Furd got a good player back from COVID quarantine on Sunday, and she really made a difference. One of these weeks, I think/hope that Cal will win at least a set in the second match of the week. Problem is that the one-dimensional nature of the Cal attack is really exposed in the rematch after the first meeting of the week.

Presidents Day, My worst 3 Presidents that easily take the cake in this regard(finished terms unlike W.H.H and Taylor and others): James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, and Herbert Hoover, feel free to agree/disagree below

Weighted by the consequence of the position, Trump absolutely has to be the worst, all time, hands downs, no question.

bottom 8 for sure, he absolutely sabotaged himself throughout his tenure buy my God I absolutely hated what Buchanan and Hoover did during their respective crisis(i.e. nothing) and Andrew Johnson because well ya know

Expand full comment

Yes, but neither Buchanan or Hoover caused their respective crisis, Trump caused his by himself; and as the only one to ever try to subvert an election, he wins the booby prize.

Also, when I say "weighted" - every since the Imperial Presidency started (1960? pick a date), but being President now is a whole other beast than in was prior to WWII, and vastly more consequential.
