Key Man Life Insurance. Investee company takes out a policy on each founder, post investment which is payable to the investor in the event of death or dismemberment, not to family of the victim. CYA

Yep, that's one of mine as well.

Subrogation - I was going to place this in yesterday's "good things happening" - yesterday a stupid lawsuit against me got tossed out by a judge, it was a subrogation lawsuit, whereby an insurance company sues someone to collect the $$$ they paid out to one one of the people they insured.

Tenant here lost a $90,000 camera he left in a truck (a truck with no extra cab) in the parking lot at night and somehow I was supposed to do something to prevent this from happening.

heyalumnigo's avatar

why would someone leave a 90K camera in an unattended car? And damn, 90K camera? I assume something professional.

Berkelium97's avatar

Seriously. Out of curiosity I went to BH Photo/Video's site and the most expensive camera I could find there was "only" 55k.

Berkelium97's avatar

I have no use for that camera whatsoever, but I would have so much fun mapping rooms and objects with it.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

You can do some Matterport scans on an iPhone! We used a camera in the $2000 range for these scans at work: https://als.lbl.gov/about/3d-models-virtual-reality/

Cugel's avatar

Yes, he's a professional photographer, his excuse was that he takes a really long time to take a shit.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The insurance company should just get him 90K of fiber.

Cugel's avatar

When I was being deposed (via zoom), the lawyer visibly perked up when I said that "I never saw any evidence of the supposed break in" - I think the insurance company doubted the veracity of this crime.

Can include or skip the onions[ great in either case.

Also good to grill or fry some slices as a breakfast meat changeup with eggs & pancakes.

both the wife and daughter can recite the lyrics to Ice Ice Baby in their entirety

heyalumnigo's avatar

https://www.queenforever.com.au/the-day-queen-sued-vanilla-ice/

He explained here that rather than have to pay royalties to Queen every time “Ice Ice Baby” was played or used for commercials, etc, it was cheaper for him to purchase the publishing rights to “Under Pressure” which he claims cost him $4 million at the time and was a “great investment”.

WilderThanGene's avatar

Until Suge Knight held him by his ankles over a balcony and made his give him his money.

WilderThanGene's avatar

Apparently the "by the ankles" part was embellished in the retelling, but Vanilla Ice is on record saying he showed up and strong armed him into signing over a good % of the rights to Ice Ice Baby to some guy who supposedly had nothing to do with the song.

Cugel's avatar

Ice wine is a nice dessert-type wine, which I have drank. Reading about apple jack, which traditionally was "fortified" by freezing, and removing the frozen water in NYT, but which I have never tried.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i have some apple jack at home. it is not that sweet as far as i remember. it is mostly good to have around to give your cocktails some variety.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

we enjoy ice-wine as an after dinner drink sometimes but generally i find it too sweet and not very complex. but a good amount of it is made in the northeast or Quebec, so we run into it often enough.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

my cousins who live in northern Sweden (Lulea) take ice thickness very seriously.

they often go long distance ice skating on frozen over Baltic Sea/Gulf of Bothnia.

also, in the winter there are ice roads that make the trip to Finland much faster for trucks and they can drive to some of the fancy resort islands that normally require boats in the summer in the archipelago.

they also have their summer home (as to all Swede's) on a little island off the coast. typically in the winter they can just XC ski to the house. that is it best time of the year to get power tools and other heavy stuff over there on sleds.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I used to watch Ice Road Truckers on History. Insane driving those heavy semis on a frozen lake.

Berkelium97's avatar

Mix of snow and ice pellets this morning in northern MD. By the end of the day we should have another 6" of snow. We've had more snow this winter than we've had in the past four winters combined.

DC Trojan's avatar

we got not very much snow at all, it's been mostly sleet (anything is better than freezing rain though)

SGBear's avatar

Meanwhile, we have had one of the warmest winters in recent memory. We have been on the warm side where the Arctic vortex keep spinning storms north, so it's been raining a ton here.

DC Trojan's avatar

it's not been much colder than usual when it's been cold, so we haven't had crazy snow & ice.

Terence's avatar

Traditionally the weeks around Chinese New Year are the coldest . . . it's the week after Chinese New Year and I'm in a t-shirt. (It'll get back down to 50s by the end of the week - but normally it's in the high 30s)

Scootie's avatar

OK, what is the difference between sleet and freezing rain?

Berkelium97's avatar

Sleet hits the ground as ice (usually tiny ice pellets) while freezing rain hits the ground as water and then freezes over. Sleet is manageable but freezing rain leads to every surface being coated in incredibly slippery (and usually invisible) ice. Freezing rain suuuuuucks.

AndyPanda's avatar

Most of sleet at least makes it to the ground, whereas much freezing rain stays on trees, power lines, roofs, etc. adding a massive amount of weight that soon breaks stuff down, which breaks other stuff as it falls. Our freezing rain event last weekend did enough damage and created enough mess (many still out of power and water after nearly a week) that the average homeowner was left with hundreds of hours of cleanup and repairs, and thousands of hours for some.

dcblue's avatar

Yeah, last storm the trees were coated with ice from the freezing rain. This time the trees are clear since it was all sleet. There ended up being enough sleet (about 3/4 of an inch) that it made a crunchy coating so I was able to get out for a run without any problems.

Cugel's avatar

Breaks tree branches, downs power lines, it's bad news.

dcblue's avatar

As a snow lover I'd take some of your snow. It's been depressing to listen to the sleet hit the windows all morning.

Berkelium97's avatar

I'd like some snow too. For the last hour or so it's been 10% snow and 90% sleet, and the sleet has grown into hail-sized ice chunks. Sounds like someone is blasting the house with plastic beads.

WilderThanGene's avatar

ICE raids don't seem to be as commonly in the news these days

https://www.wsj.com/articles/well-have-herd-immunity-by-april-11613669731

"There is reason to think the country is racing toward an extremely low level of infection. As more people have been infected, most of whom have mild or no symptoms, there are fewer Americans left to be infected. At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life."

Dude seems to think that the 77% decline in cases from the peak at the start of the year will continue perpetually until covid magically goes away. Also helping this decline is his (wildly overestimated) assumption that 55% of the country has already been infected. Also, this guy is an MD at Johns Hopkins.

YeahOkay.gif

rocksanddirt's avatar

way over estimate. in my county for example, we've not even tested 1/2 the population. We have no real idea about the real amount of people exposed. Our positive test rate and number of recent cases have fallen sharply, but we are by no means out of the woods in April.

News dropping this morning that he's on his way back to Texas after being shamed by colleagues.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He was simply chaperoning his family to Cancun to protect them from the cartels. Those were guns, tactical gear, and bullet proof vest in that luggage.

dcblue's avatar

I just read a story that he or his office had called ahead and asked for special security at the airport. He must really be fearful. :) I've also seen conflicting reports out of his camp about whether this was long planned or his daughters asked the day before.

Cugel's avatar

Everything's bigger in Texas, including the problems.

Fire Starkey's avatar

its so so bad. I'm extremely fortunate that I have not lost power or had water issues. We did stack lots of bags of mulch around our exposed pipes in advance plus did the candle under a terracotta pot trick to keep our outdoor kitchen pipe thawed. But I know people who have gone 3+ days without power and its 35 degrees inside their house.

GB III's avatar

I agree. Every house in my neighbor has now had a burst pipe. It almost seems like a serial issue. Pipe burst, shut down water, next house down the line pipe burst and so on. Maybe the added pressure down the line when the water is shut at a house causes the bursting. Not boiling water yet, but expect to soon. I really don’t know how the media is broadcasting this in other cities/states, but man, this is not fun to deal with.

Fire Starkey's avatar

There's a lot of panic out there understandably. Most of the power is back on but water issues are going to be weeks in the fixing. But this shit has gotten 3rd world in many places. An acquaintance said he and his family burned most of their books and some furniture to stay warm. Fucking ridiculous. Heads better roll over this because all this happened because of greed and incompetence

heyalumnigo's avatar

Ted Cruz - 1, 2, 3 Cancun

GoldenSD81's avatar

And he will still win his election by 1-3% over Beto.

The GOP is a death cult and celebrate stuff like this. Right wing media and media figures are already coming to the rescue for Tequila Ted.

Fire Starkey's avatar

you mean "Cancun Cruz" as he is being affectionately refered to now here in Texas?

GoldenSD81's avatar

This is Texas, the GOP is just going to spin this and continue to win.

I don’t see the GOP losing any major (Senator or Governor) offices due to this crisis.

Fire Starkey's avatar

we'll see. I continue to see a shift in demographics but it was badly overstated because of the Latino vote shift in the Valley last go round. Beto is building his own mini cult of personality and I think it'll take someone like him to break the Republican stranglehold on Texas politics. But the scandals are building and if it gets played, right, I think he can break through. We'll see...

Cugel's avatar

Those damn windmills!

Fire Starkey's avatar

Abbott backtracked on that almost instantly. Probably because someone whispered "Ummm, the windmills were actually the only power source to overperform during this weather event." Oops...asshole. I despise Abbott, I hope Beto puts him in the fucking ground in '22.

g.oso's avatar

what's the terra cotta candle trick?

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'm guessing the candle in the terra cotta warms up the terra cotta providing more heat than if it were just the candle. Also probably more fire safe? Like you could probably put a tea candle under there and boost the heat output.

Wiata78's avatar

The east coast trick was to keep a trickle of water running. But that doesn't help if you have hot water heating.

Fire Starkey's avatar

we have 3 bricks spaced evenly in a rough triangle. A lit candle is in between them on a plate and a terracotta pot put over the top resting on the bricks. Traps and amplifies a little bit of extra heat. We have our outdoor kitchen with pipes so mulch bags on the exterior covering those and the pot under the sink to keep it from freezing and bursting. Working so far.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Warriors won a game they had no business winning. No Draymond, Wiseman, Looney. Steph going 5-20 from 3. Ended up hitting 2 in OT. Paschell and Bazemore were nails. Outplayed the other two starters JTA and Mulder.

Wiata78's avatar

That was an awesome finish, the last minutes of the 4th and OT.

heyalumnigo's avatar

For a while it looked like neither team wanted to win, kept missing open shots. All the Heat open 3s fell short towards the end of the game. Looked like their legs were gone.

CruzinBears's avatar

I stopped paying attention at the beginning of the 4th, then with a couple min left I looked up and was pleasantly surprised. Bazemore was fantastic, it's fun having him back on the team and playing so well.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Tim Tebow's pro baseball career is over. The pandemic wiping away last year's need for a novelty attendance draw really killed his shot to make the Big League with the Mets. If he didn't get hurt two years ago, he might have gotten a September call-up.

I actually saw him play in two different minor league games. A regular-season one at the Trenton Thunder and then an overhyped AA All-Star game at the sold-out home for the Thunder (my friends and I were only able to get last-minute standing room only tickets for that game), where we also saw ESPN fantasy writer Eric Karabell there as a fan.

g.oso's avatar

really playing loosely with the word career here

GoldenSD81's avatar

Next up is his GQP political career. I’m sure he will be running for some congressional seat in 2-4 years.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I think the Padres are a lot more optimistic about the state of the baseball economic future than many of the other teams. This is not necessarily a bad deal, but it's also unnecessary at this juncture of Tatis' career...why sacrifice that much of the near term financial flexibility, especially if they think that they can win a title (to be fair, they do have a bunch of minor league prospects as capital to make deal).

By the way, when the Padres traded away a past-his-prime James Shield to the White Sox, the arguably better prospect return at the time was Cal alum RHP Erik Johnson (already out of baseball) rather than Tatis.

heyalumnigo's avatar

He's only played 143 regular season games.

Berkelium97's avatar

I was wondering why I didn't recognize his name...

That's a lot of cash for someone with such a small sample size.

heyalumnigo's avatar

He seems to have the talent. One of the best young talents. Padres locking him in. Even after just 2 seasons he may be the best player on the Padres roster. He or Machado, except he isn't (or doesn't seem to be) a dick and Machado is.

goldenone's avatar

Great start to his career but the Padres seem to have thrown caution to the Wind.

heyalumnigo's avatar

They're just sick of being the Dodgers little brother. Petco becomes Dodgers Stadium when the Dodgers are in town. Like the Q used to become a Raiders home game.

It's good for the NL West in that the other teams will have to step up in order to try to make the playoffs. Have to step up to knock off one of these two teams to try to make it rather than not spend and try to get 2nd place.

AndyPanda's avatar

The Dodgers have necessitated either trying to out-Dodger the Dodgers or go all-in on pitching to get you within sight of things (aka TB & Atlanta), or else abandon any hope of contending (as some have done).

heyalumnigo's avatar

Except for Bauer, Betts, and Pollack, most of the main contributors are homegrown. I'm considering Turner, Muncy, Taylor homegrown for the purposes of this statement. They were unheralded before the trade and the Dodgers made them better. Before Bauer and Price (that was sort of a cost to get Betts), all their starting pitchers last year were drafted by them. Kershaw, Buehler, May, Gonsolin, Urias, Stripling,

Yes they have money to retain their talent, but it isn't like they're buying players like the Mets and the Yankees. Most of their players were drafted by them or players they traded for and made better.

I see the Giants trying to do this with Farhan, but he needs to get players while stocking up the minors. Similar to when the current ownership took over for parking lot man (McCourt), they made the Nick Punto trade (A-Gon, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford came along) to get talent while building up the minor league talent.

AndyPanda's avatar

True, they have developed a lot of their talent, but they also have the $s to comfortably spend them to get differential players like Bauer and Betts, and to retain at least a lot of their differential players, which is as much a problem as purchasing talent is for teams that are limited financially or in terms of front office competence.

goldenone's avatar

A's sign Mitch Moreland as probable Dh.

Just a quick wiki search says that the original book had UVA as Stanford, UNC as Cal, and William and Mary as NYU.

DC Trojan's avatar

I don't think these analogs quite hold up.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Actually, I think I screwed up the analogy. The analog of Cal is actually William and Mary, but the final choice was UNC. The book author is a UNC alum.

Ruey Yen's avatar

UVA/W&M has the geographical proximity of Stanford/Cal. The protagonist opted to go further away to UNC rather than to stay closer to the guy (I've neither read the books nor saw the movies).
