making a Coppa Roast for dinner tomorrow. the local butcher tells me this is a nice piece of meat and that i should sear on the outside and then finish in the oven.
tonight, we have some guests and we have a bunch of Montreal-style smoked meat that we are making sandwiches out of.
The way Sax sees it, the main differences between pastrami and smoked meat come down to the cut of beef and the spice rub it's coated with.
"Pastrami in the United States is almost always made with navel, a cut similar to belly, or what you would make bacon out of on a pig. So it's a little bit denser, a lot fattier, and it's less stringy," notes Sax. On the other hand, Montreal-style smoked meat comes from brisket, as navel is much harder to find in Canada because of its British beef cut tradition. "Smoked meat made from brisket can be stringier and a lot softer if it's steamed right. [Brisket's] not fattier throughout the cut, but it has a larger cap of fat, and it has a stringier texture, more fibrous. American-style pastrami is more marbled with fat and has a denser texture."

Israel doesn't care at all, I would imagine. The only way they care is if the US stops supplying them with arms.
COMMENT: I have thoroughly soured on Israel because they are a genocidal government. Their solution to every conflict with a neighboring Arab state is to go to war. Further, I see the founding of Israel in a wholly different light given the events since the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital in 2017, taking into account Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the campaign to expel Palestinians from the West Bank, and the ceaseless campaign to eradicate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
Harry Truman did a lot of good things. Recognizing Israel is not one of them.
my take is that countries that are "religion first" have a fundamental problem, either now or later. in the end there is no way long terms way to avoid the ill will between religions and the internal issues that come w/ a single source of truth i an society of diverse set of humans.
Which is precisely why Israel should never have been recognized. It was always slanted towards theocratic because it was founded on the concept of a homeland for Jewish people.
It's absolutely no wonder to me that Iran and Israel are mortal enemies. Two theocracies who view each other as threats to their respective existences.
I run across plenty of Jewish people who remind me that many Israeli citizens, and Jewish people throughout the world, are definitely not fans of the current government in Israel.
Like you might see with Americans and their current administration.
I still see that as an argument that the Israeli government, as a theocratic leaning institution, should be abolished or severely reformed.
No different for the United States. Americans need to take back the federal and state governments from the Christian nationalists in order to have the US survive as a secular nation. And while we're at it, let's either amend the Constitution or write a new one. Personally, I would favor a new one based on three branches of government.
The checks and balances are brilliant; what's critical is the proper people to fill those positions.
My critical reforms would be age limits in all three branches.
CONGRESS - If you hit 72 years old before the end of your current term, you cannot stand for re-election. Applies to both US Representatives and US Senators.
PRESIDENT - If you will be 72 years old or older on Inauguration Day, you cannot be elected or re-elected President.
CABINET - If you're 72 or older, you cannot be confirmed as a cabinet level officer.
SUPREME COURT
Membership - the Court will be comprised of one Chief Justice and 12 Associate Justices. This will match the current number of Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal. Each Justice will have oversight over one Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.
Term - A full term begins on October 1 of the year in which the justice is nominated and runs for 13 years. This means that during a standard four-year presidential term, the President will nominate 4 justices. A justice can be re-nominated to a second term provided (s)he is not older than 59 years old when the next term would begin. Corollary principle - if you will be at least 59 years old when starting a full term, you cannot be nominated to a seat on the Supreme Court. However, if you're filling the unexpired remainder of a term and will have not attained the age of 72 years at the end of that term (September 30), you can be nominated to fill the unexpired portion.
This month's competition with my homies is connections. There's a dude that has only made one bad guess so far, meaning he was perfect for 7 days and made one error on the 8th. That's insane. He's running away with it!
Meanwhile, the guy who crushes us every time we do wordle almost never can successfully do a connections. It's funny how people have such vastly different strengths, even amongst NYT games.
Interesting. When comparing your chart to mine, I assume it shows the order of groups solved. This assumes that the same colors indicate the same groups for everyone who played.
True. Purple, for example, is always supposedly the hardest, but I happened to figure that one out first today. Usually people solve yellow or green first. They’re easier. Order is the same as the spectrum.
NAPA - The California women's golf team wrapped up its 2025-26 regular season Wednesday, finishing in 12th place out of 16 teams at the Chevron Silverado Showdown. The Bears shot 9-over par as a team in the final round, finishing with a three-day stroke total of 895 (+31).
California will play host to the 2026 MPSF Tournament this week, with action running Friday through Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. As the No. 4 seed in the tourney, the Golden Bears (13-5) will face No. 5 seed Arizona State at 2:30 p.m. PT on Friday to fight for a spot in the 12:45 p.m. semifinals against top-seeded USC on Saturday. Sunday competition will feature placement games, culminating in a 2:30 p.m. championship. For the tournament full schedule and results, visit the MPSF Tournament Central page.

Pirates lock up the #1 prospect that has played in a handful of games for 9/140. Buys out 3 years of free agency. This is after the Mariners and the Brewers locked up their top prospects for 8 years .
Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a nine-year extension, the team announced, locking up the top prospect in baseball less than a week after his major league debut.
The deal is worth $140 million, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan and Buster Olney, the largest guarantee in Pirates history as well as for any player in his rookie season.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN the Toronto Blue Jays winning and losing the 2025 World Series was roughly the length of a hyphen. In the ninth inning of Game 7, the dash to the plate by Toronto's Isiah Kiner-Falefa -- one of the game's most famous hyphenated players! -- resulted in a 4-2 putout. Kiner-Falefa was out at the plate by the smallest of margins, and now, more than five months later, we are still talking about it.
On Monday, the San Francisco Giants lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4, and I crafted an entire maybe-I’m-thinking-about-this-too-much narrative to go with it. In my recap, I mentioned the sloppiness and (in)attention to detail that has plagued the Giants through this cold, hard, long two-week season, and how they appeared to rid themselves of it on Monday, only to have it boomerang back and smack them in the face.
It wasn’t always easy, but the Dodgers took an early lead and never relinquished it, beating the Jays 4-1. For the third time in a row, following in the footsteps of their two games versus Kevin Gausman in last year’s World Series, the Dodgers scored exactly three runs against the Blue Jays starter. After the outburst of 14 runs in the previous win, a performance like that from Gausman has its value for Toronto, but going up against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, it wasn’t quite enough for the home team to avoid their sixth straight defeat.
Probably more so between 2012-2014 when the Giants were winning WS and the Warriors were coming up. Then starting 2015-2016 the Giants were down and the Ws were on top. In 2021 the Giants somehow inexplicably won 107 but the Ws were down with Steph being hurt.

How many DBDers actually remember checking out books with those due date cards?
also i miss that you had to write your name in the textbook when you borrowed it for a year. it was always cool to look at the names and years and especially cool if you saw a name that was actually meaningful to you.
and making/using book covers to protect ye olde book for next year
I used to use the large Bechtel envelopes that my dad used to bring home, rather than the Round Table Pizza covers or the supermarket bags.
I was a student librarian and actually used those rubber date stamps.
Same here. That was when I was in junior high.
Me too, so I guess we're about the same age?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't the same junior high. Unless your name is June or Mark.
I graduated high school in 1978; I always assumed the 78 in your handle was your college graduation year.
My junior high was Martin Luther King, Jr. Junior High School in Berkeley.
Correct, I am a few years older. Fort Miller Junior High in Fresno.
I remember both those due date cards and the card catalog
I had forgotten about card catalogs. I remember using GLADIS on campus
I do.
oh, for sure.

NBA season almost at an end. 3-ish more games and play-in tournament starts next week. 99% chance W's are the 10 seed in the west.
There is a VERY SMALL chance they can get the 9 or maybe the 8, but most likely they don't have home court advantage for any of the playoff games.
How often does it happen that the Giants and Warriors both win on the same day? Probably not as much as it used to.
