A's sweep the Mets. yesterday was a 1-0 win that i went to in person.

A's now have a winning record and seem pretty solid after a good trip to NYC.

Quick Bites: Sharks Show Fight in Tight Loss (4-3)

https://www.fearthefin.com/quick-bites-sharks-show-fight-in-tight-loss/

The San Jose Sharks faced off against conference rival, the Vancouver Canucks, in what was a chaotic way to finish the Sharks’ regular season at home. The SAP Center was lively during fan appreciation night, but the result was evidently not what was wanted. The game featured three tying goals from the Canucks, sending it into overtime, and then three extra rounds of shootouts, where Vancouver eventually came out victorious, 4-3.

What a disappointing end to the season. Ended up losing like 6 straight.

sycasey's avatar

They gave us some hope about a week ago, but ultimately this team just wasn't good enough on defense. Future still looks bright, though!

heyalumnigo's avatar

I forgot they have 3 more away games

heyalumnigo's avatar

I agree with some analyst a couple of months ago that if the Sharks can figure out their D, look out. They're promising on O, but the game i went to the Oilers just relentlessly attacked and the Sharks couldn't stop them.

Game 82 wrap: Warriors and Clippers scrimmage for Play-In on Wed; Podziemski gets banged up

https://dubnationhq.com/p/game-82-wrap-no-spoiler-title

heyalumnigo's avatar

I don't see any way the Warriors beat the Clippers, especially with Step, Al, and possibly others on a minutes restriction. Cancun!

Does seem like they've clearly packed it in.

Giants unable to close out at-bats, innings, or series

Another 6-2 loss

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings/105001/sf-giants-baltimore-orioles-mlb-recap-pete-alonso

Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. A pleasant breeze swirled around the baked brick of Camden Yards, carrying the warm tang of Old Bay seasoning. One would be forgiven if the pleasant atmosphere suggested a sedate affair, a leisurely stroll of a game.

Texas Rangers walking rampant as Dodgers drop finale (5-2)

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/113403/dodgers-rangers-game-recap

For the second straight series, the Dodgers were on the cusp of a sweep but dropped the finale again. This time it was the Texas Rangers avoiding a sweep, stealing the final game by a final score of 5-2.

Good final nine at the Masters for the Bears. Morikawa (five straight birdies) and Homa (eagle and two birdies) both finish in the top ten.

I saw that Star Wars: Shadow Maul was just released. Has anyone heard anything about it? Trying to figure out if it's worth watching. I guess I'll check out the first episode.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

oh cool. i like Darth Maul - one of my favorite bad guys

heyalumnigo's avatar

Just watched the first episode. (6/19) looks like it's animated and is the rise, or re-rise of Darth Maul. I probably won't watch the remaining episodes.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I guess it debuted last week and I missed it.

How many people remember the first time they stuck their finger between the plug prongs and got shocked? I don't quite remember the first time, but I do remember doing it in my bedroom lamp plug when I was probably younger than 6.

FiatSlug's avatar

Interesting. I never thought to do that.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Maybe I'm the weird one then, thought about doing something like this. I'm guessing the first time it happened I wasn't careful unplugging something.

FiatSlug's avatar

I can see it accidentally happening so that a finger makes a short circuit between two prongs.

This winter has had numerous static electricity shocks. Can't seem to avoid it. Hope it will lessen now that it is spring.

Political stuff goes here

SGBear's avatar

One of my favorite quotes on Reddit was that Trump blockading the Hormuz Straits to change the narrative that having no oil was his idea of declaring victory is like Frank Drebin also taking a hostage in The Naked Gun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnI30mIKW2k

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

can someone actually explain the rationale? assuming it is possible ..

FiatSlug's avatar

Well, first off, you have to recognize the President of the United States is demented.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I had forgotten about that scene. Ricardo Montalban, George Kennedy, and Leslie Nielsen. And the $C band playing something other than Tribute to Troy?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

semi political since it makes cringe

This story about Cal Athletics Marketing is confusing. It leads with a bunch of people being laid off, which creates the impression that the entire function is going away. But then within the article it talks about a "Strawberry Creek Studios" being created to take on this work and that the same people can apply to work there. But the information about Strawberry Creek Studios itself is laden with confusing buzzwords, so it's hard to say what it will actually be doing.

https://www.si.com/college/cal/football/cal-athletics-informs-about-two-dozen-staffers-they-are-being-laid-off-01knysptnk24

I kind of assume this is all just laying the groundwork to take more of the football/basketball marketing away from the folks who weren't doing much with it and moving it to a group with more accountability to the donor base. But it's a confusing announcement.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I was confused when I read this as well. I'm curious who runs Strawberry Creek Studios.

I think this possibly signals an overall shift of football logistics away from UC altogether, at a minimum. It means shifting financial responsibility for non-football concerns (like marketing) from UC to a private entity.

How are we to know that ultimately, football will become an entity separate from the AD and the University? Private equity is already making inroads with the Big Ten and Big XII. The University of Kentucky has already taken its entire athletic department non-profit. Who's next?

EDIT: You want Title IX compliance? We give you compliance... in the form of taking football entirely off our books. When we do that, we can cut sports that are a large drain on our budget because we can take 85 male sports counters out of the equation that determines compliance. Let the sports cuts commence!

You scoff, but that's a benefit to the University. They no longer need to thread that needle or make those financial commitments: facilities, coaching salaries, scholarships, etc. It would surely solve the field hockey facilities problem if they don't have a legal obligation to build to solve it.
