World Quantum Day - was yesterday

World Quantum Day is an international initiative held annually on April 14 (4/14) to promote public understanding of quantum physics and technology, referencing the rounded first digits of the Planck constant, 4.1435 x 10e-15 eV/s.

Wiata78's avatar

Back in the day, Physics 5something and Chem 4something, I think they taught us Planck’s constant in MKS units. Which would put us in June.

6.62607015 × 10e-34 m^2 kg / s

Shrinking Season 3 (18/19 - Apple TV). Just finished season 3. It was so good and the finale was really good. Seemed like they made it like a series finale in case they were not renewed for season 4. Season 4 renewal was just announced and it's the same people but new storylines so I'm guessing X years in the future. Maybe 4+ and the daughter will be done with college.

Wiata78's avatar

Most likely Harrison Ford will be gone, which is too bad.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I thought they said everyone would be back. Though maybe he's just in 1 or 2 episodes and then they write him off

i hit go on TurboTax in the afternoon yesterday. everything seemed to go smoothly.

this year my "main thing i did different" was build a website using Claude to estimate my taxes independently of TurboTax. i had been using a custom spreadsheet all these years.

(i feel like i talked about this already .. )

sycasey's avatar

Got mine done last month!

FiatSlug's avatar

I should have promptly did my taxes in February. Instead, I dawdled until April. I filed on April 9, but I could have had my refund much earlier, and it is rather sizable. 4 figure refunds from both the IRS and the FTB.

Ugh.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I pay a little for federal and get some back from Ca. So I usually wait as long as I can because it ends up almost being a wash.

FiatSlug's avatar

I should have run the estimated numbers in January. I would have realized that I was due a sizable refund from both taxation entities.

The primary reason for this was that I overestimated my tax liability when I took a distribution from one of my 401(k) accounts. I should have done a little more work when I took that distribution to minimize the refund scenario.

There was only one possible solution left — and you got it! Well done.

at least i got the answer rather than show off my extensive vocabulary today...

It's like having to pay $110 for the Cal ATO tailgate at an away game. Not exactly worth it.

Warriors play the Clippers tonight in the play-in game. 1-2-3 Cancun. Don't see how they beat the Clippers. Especially with Steph, Al, and Porzingas on minutes restriction, and they have no one that can stop Kahwi.

sycasey's avatar

And even if they do manage to win this, it's not like they stand any chance of getting out of the first round vs. OKC.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

exactly. and they have to win a 2nd play-in game vs PHX right?

sycasey's avatar

Right, I meant winning the whole play-in tournament.

After Yamamoto & McLean duel, Dodgers squeak by Mets

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/113523/yoshinobu-yamamoto-nolan-mclean-mets

LOS ANGELES — Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Nolan McLean engaged in a wonderful pitching duel on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, pitchers with different styles but equally vast repertoires, and both exceedingly difficult to score against. Offenses were kept mostly at bay until the eighth inning, when both teams threatened but only the Dodgers were able to push across the game-winner, beating the Mets 2-1.

our neighbors across the street have 3 triplet girls, 2 identical + 1 not.

given all the child care and logistical needs, quite often we help out in terms rides. i always enjoy interacting w/ any subset of them because it gives me a glimpse into the younger generation.

on a more general note - i really miss not having kids in the house. obviously i miss my kids, but just miss kids in general. happy to be around everything from screaming babies to bratty teenagers.

FiatSlug's avatar

You are one of those rare people with deep parental instincts. I have 'em, too, though Mrs Slug is someone who does not miss the screaming toddlers.

We are expectant grandparents (early August). Looking forward to it. Also looking forward to retirement around Thanksgiving (estimated date).

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

congrats in advance.

heyalumnigo's avatar

WIth No 3 potentially leaving after he hopefully gets into PT school, I'm kinda in the same boat, even though I only see him a few days a week.

Wiata78's avatar

People who never had kids don’t understand how you can actually develop a fondness for screaming babies.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I am ready to be a grandparent. Trending toward that not happening for a while.

Wiata78's avatar

Same. If ever.
