Upper 70s and bluebird clear in Seattle. Often it’s still gray and cold in May.

Perfect 77 degrees, no humidity, great day to escape for patio lunch to local bbq joint. We are having an exceptional spring in Atl.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I was just there last weekend and we got a little rain for the Braves game on Sat, but not too bad. We were just under the overhang in the 3rd deck so we just stayed out of the rain.

Macarolina's avatar

Glad you had the cover-- we are in drought, so you hit some of the very little rain we've had this spring. We haven't made it over yet for a game, were just talking at lunch about how we need to go within this next week to hit the great weather/before it gets sticky.

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 2's GF was saying the same thing. That the entire state is in a severe drought.

I guess technically 2 weekends ago since it's Monday today.

Cloudy (but dry) and in the high 50s, after being near 90 yesterday, in western Oregon.

58 deg. F in Oakland's Chinatown with an expected high of 63 deg. F. High 60s by the end of the week.

The summer I worked at EBMWU was the summer that building was open. Going from the Adeline office to Chinatown was amazing

FiatSlug's avatar

That was 1991. I remember this because I was hired in May 1990 and started work at the Adeline office. My unit moved downtown the first week of August 1991. The Oakland Firestorm happened about 2.5 months after we moved into the new building. That means the 35th anniversary will be in October.

Changed my commute entirely. When I was at Adeline, the commute by car was 20 minutes in the morning, 25 minutes in the afternoon. It was a longer commute by AC Transit and BART, but it was far more relaxing because I didn't have to drive. It was also less expensive because EBMWU issued BART tickets for commuting. We were subsidized something like $90 per month in 1991.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I drove down Adeline from my apt on MLK Jr Way so it was pretty easy. After the new office opened, I would still drive there but then take the bus to the new office. I think as a summer intern I didn't get parking in the new building.

I marveled at the security for swiping the badges and then they had the colored lights that let you know you could go. I always wondered a little bit why they spent so much money on it.

heyalumnigo's avatar

low 60s here. mid 60s by wed/thurs and then low 80s beginning of next week.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

nice and 70 deg today in NYC area. up to almost 80 tomorrow they say.

went for a nice walk/hike yesterday w/ college kid who is home for a few weeks. the 60 deg weather was perfect.

It is about 40 degrees below normal. Normally it's mid-90s now. It's in the 50s, I'm wearing flannels and a hoodie and running the fireplace when usually I'm sweating my balls off this time of the year.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (7/19, WNB). C-minus of a movie. The writing is confused and has characters do/think things that make no sense. This was a money grab and it wasn't very good. This movie should have never been made.

My NYT crossword streak ended at 103 days, by far my best run ever. I had been assuming it wouldn't survive Saturday because I was traveling for a full-day event with good friends and I wouldn't have the time to dedicate. That's what happened. I'm pretty proud of the streak, but I was ready to let it go.

I took Sunday off, too, and then got back on the horse today with a sub-seven minute Monday.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Sat took me over 2 hours and i was mostly sitting around all day working on computer and coming back to it over and over.

I beat WordleBot by 1 move today.

I think I understand something about WordleBot now. I believe that WordleBot assumes that humans will ALWAYS try to solve based on the previous guess, even if that guess offered tepid results. WordleBot DOES NOT assume that a person might try an entirely different set of letters on the 2nd guess even if the first guess yielded 2 letters misplaced.

beats Navy for zillionth rugby national title. i watched for a bit on the YouTube live stream.

Cal has now won 30 national championships in rugby 15s competition, and 26 of those have come under head coach Jack Clark, now in his 43rd season at the helm for the Golden Bears.

[RUGBY] Bears Win National Championship

https://calbears.com/news/2026/5/2/rugby-bears-win-national-championship.aspx

INDIANAPOLIS - The California rugby team won their second straight national championship Saturday defeating the United States Naval Academy 36-22 at Kuntz Stadium. Five different players scored six tries in the victory. This is the Bears 30th XVs championship title and 35th overall, including its five sevens titles. The championship is Golden Bears' head coach Jack Clark's milestone 31st national title, 26 of which are in 15-a-side competition.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

was there some sort of red card situation?

Cal played most of the rest of the game a man down, and Navy took advantage with a try by Tanner Cal, making the score 31-15 with 20 minutes left.

Matt's avatar

I don't remember any red cards, but Cal had two yellow cards, the second coming with less than a minute left on the first.

I spent the weekend in Philadelphia, and was reminded of how much it's an ELITE sports town. Every bar is covered in banners and flags of the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers. Tons of people were talking about that night's Sixers game, in anticipation. Lots of people just walking around in Flyers gear. It a super-engaged fanbase.

heyalumnigo's avatar

NL West sucks. Before wins yesterday, it was the first time every team in an MLB division has a 3 or longer losing streak.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Giants lose to the Rays, 2-1.

FiatSlug's avatar

Giants certainly suck. I am, at best, non-committal about Vitello. I think Posey cuts him loose if they can't right the ship by Memorial Day.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Sucks for Vitello if that happens. He was the man at Tennessee and he gave it all up to manage the Giants. And may be out of a job soon.

FiatSlug's avatar

Yeah, it does suck for Vitello. When Vitello was hired I read that he is the first MLB manager to go straight from the college game to an MLB manager's position. Makes me wonder if the way in which players are managed and coached at the college level are so very different than the MLB level.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think so. I also think for FB and BB with NIL, coaching is different now. Players making serious money (for a college kid) and coaches have to treat that differently. Kind of like when pro players started making way more than the coaches.

The Dodgers didn’t hit a home run on Sunday, but didn’t need to. They scraped together just enough offense to back a stingy Justin Wrobleski, who extended his April success into May in a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

My boss leaves at the end of this month, which makes prime conditions for me to be made redundant. If and when that happens next month, I will retire and walk into the Light Side. I'm tasked with trying to figure out what I am going to do with all my time. I don't have any hobbies that I'm burning passionate about, so I'll probably have to pick up several.

Newellbany's avatar

Aren't you working, schooling, and cooking...with each one being basically full time? If you stop doing one of the three, aren't you still doubly full time?

heyalumnigo's avatar

FiatSlug's avatar

My boss is likely to be here for the next 5 to 6 years, but I anticipate riding off into the sunset in January. Mrs Slug is looking forward to my retirement.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

any near term retirement plans?

as some of us approach this age, i find it useful to hear how are others are thinking of it.

i am 55, i might work till 65. i also dont work that hard so it doesnt seem to be something i want to stop doing.

that being said, i could find plenty of other ways to spend my time/effort.

FiatSlug's avatar

I'm older than you or Newellbany, by at least a decade. I will have 36 years at the end of May. Unlike Newellbany, my pension doesn't max out with years of service since it is based on terminal compensation (highest 2-year average) and length of service. Under the Retirement Ordinance, I could continue to work and earn a higher value pension. But there's a tradeoff: there's less years in retirement. There was a legend at EBMWU who worked 57 years. Four of her kids and a son-in-law also worked at EBMWU. Unfortunately, she retired about 3 weeks before she died. I like working here, but I will not make that mistake.

I hope to become a full-time husband and grandfather. There's so much that I can see myself doing in retirement. I do not plan on taking an armchair retirement. Mrs Slug wants me to think seriously about volunteering to hold newborns and babies at hospitals. Apparently, that's a thing at pediatric hospitals, and I was, as Mrs Slug says, a natural at it when we had kids. I admit that I have very strong paternal instincts.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I would definitely volunteer to hold newborns and babies in hospitals!!!

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

that's amazing. i think i would like to hold newborns and babies at hospitals too. i didnt realize there was a position for that, even if unpaid.

Newellbany's avatar

Like our friend FiatSlug, I have the benefit of a government pension. So I'm assuming I'll work until it maxes out at 30 years, which coincides with when my younger daughter would graduate from college (if she goes straight through). I'd be early-mid 60s.

Then I'd emulate much of my dad's retirement plan. He serves on a couple nonprofit boards and he goes on week-long hiking trips with friends. I think do that, and I'll also become a school/club volleyball ref. I'll probably spend the summer up around Lake George and we'll have to figure out where to live the other half of the year. That's how I'm thinking about it today, anyways. 11 years to go...

Macarolina's avatar

I like hearing retirement is real!

It is something to look forward to, isn't it?
