we were in Miami last weekend for a family wedding. the Western-style wedding and reception on the final night was on a yacht and "black tie optional" was the dress code.

needless to say, we had a good time having an excuse to dress up. it was also a perfect night in Miami out on the water. so that was great.

@So, "Western-style" didn't mean cowboy hats and bolo ties?@

Macarolina's avatar

I was in a wedding once with Stetsons and string ties... Not my thing, but fun anyway.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

no .. we have a wedding coming up in rural Eastern WI. trying to figure out what to wear to that one!

HSB, I’m intrigued by your mention of the wedding being Western. Although you’re probably revealed it sometime, I don’t think I know your ancestry. So—did you dress up in some sort of Eastern or Southeastern Asian style? Or, African perhaps?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Right, both my wife and I are of Indian origin, she is Gujarati, I am Bengali, and we both grew up in the US since our parents were the immigrants.

the wedding was white Catholic woman from CT and bro-in-law who is also Gujarati.

- the first night was a hybrid Indian ceremony/rehearsal dinner.

- the 2nd day in the morning was a traditional Indian wedding.

- later in the evening was the Christian wedding and dance party on the boat.

And since you're asking, here are some photos from the weekend. we are the good looking family of 4. much of the rest is random friends and family. the only bride-groom photo are the ones wearing all the garlands.

Awesome, thanks and congratulations(which I should have said already!).

I’ve never been to an Indian wedding, but from pictures I’ve seen, and some videos, I think they’re the best. Certainly the most colorful. And elephants, sometimes.

I say this as a fifth generation Chinese American.

Wow. We only ever see the photos on that famous staircase. What happens after that? Like, do they all try to sit down and eat a meal wearing all that? I have some logistical questions.

Cool dudes, but they have a structural problem with that whole "the apprentice has to kill the master" thing.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

my 16 yr old nephew also likes the Dark Side better. i told him that he could be my Sith apprentice.

at first he protested saying he wanted to be the Sith master. when i imformed him that the Sith apprentice's goal was to become powerful enough to kill the master, he agreed to be the apprentice!

_ is a dish best served cold

TIL that it is an old phrase

The proverb “revenge is a dish best served cold” is not especially old but first appeared in English in the translation of Eugène Sue’s novel Memoirs of Matilda in 1846.

i guilty of many other of the deadly sins. this one does not resonate w/ me.

Newellbany's avatar

It'd be a good DBD topic to list which of the deadly sins is most likely to be one's downfall.

Revenge doesn't really do it for me, either...although if I ever saw John Fisher walking down the street...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

teed up for tomorrow. i expected record breaking discussion!

FiatSlug's avatar

I'd be the guy who says "fuckwit" loud enough for him and anyone else within 5 feet to hear. That would be a restrained action.

Newellbany's avatar

That'd be hella restrained.

Believe it or not, last night I had a weird dream that MLB or the players union determined that Sacramento wasn't fit to host major league baseball, so the A's temporarily moved back to the Coliseum until the Vegas dome is finished. This just pissed me off more and I woke up grumpy.

So given that John Fisher haunts my dreams to this day, I would be much less restrained.

FiatSlug's avatar

That is a weird dream. I can understand why you would wake up grumpy because of it.

[RUGBY] Solomon Williams Wins National Player Of The Year Honors

https://calbears.com/news/2026/5/4/rugby-solomon-williams-wins-national-player-of-the-year-honors.aspx

Senior scrumhalf Solomon Williams was selected as the winner of the Rudy Scholz Award, given each year to the top collegiate rugby player in the nation, as announced by Goff Rugby Report on Monday. Williams became the first Cal player ever to win the award, two days after leading Cal to its second straight national championship.

Macarolina's avatar

Shocking that a Cal player has never before received this award. Or is the award only a a few years old?

heyalumnigo's avatar

I was thinking the same thing. Must be a new award.

Giants’ other rookie saves the day (Giants beat the Pads 3-2)

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/san-francisco-giants-scores-standings/106154/giants-padres-scores-recap-trevor-mcdonald-casey-schmitt

The San Francisco Giants, feckless and fully on life support after one of the worst road trips in franchise history, were in desperation mode after Sunday’s defeat. As we’ve been told since birth, desperate times call for desperate measures, and in baseball parlance, desperate measures means desperate transactions.

Homer drought no more—Dodgers thump Astros (8-3)

https://www.truebluela.com/dodgers-scores-standings/115012/alex-freeland-kyle-tucker-home-runs-yamamoto-win

The home run drought is over, and it only took facing one of the shakiest pitching staffs in baseball for it to happen, as the Dodgers thoroughly outhit Houston in an 8-3 win. It was a win with the particularly sweet taste of seeing Kyle Tucker leave the yard in his old stomping grounds, hitting one out to right field, a place he patrolled for so many years.

Knicks crush 76ers in series opener. a solid 10 pt lead just kept getting bigger and bigger.

Brunson, again, was on fire in 1st quarter. had something like 14 of their first 21 points.

i turned it off at halftime and watched some Star Wars instead (episode IV) and it was very satisfying.
