The Bayeux Tapestry’s Long and Bumpy Road to London

French art experts insisted the fragile 900-year-old masterpiece could never travel. Political will, cutting-edge engineering and unorthodox diplomacy proved them wrong.

(what is it?) 220-foot-long embroidery depicting the 1066 invasion of England by William the Conqueror

this is probably one of the most interesting and memorable things of art that i have ever seen. over 200 ft long, amazing detail and vibrant colors depicting a single historic event.

Yeah, visiting Bayeux was probably my favorite stop in youth hosteling around France, and the tapestry was a highlight. I’m sorry to hear it has become subject to travel, actually.

The Bayeux Tapestry is extremely famous, but I was most excited to see the Rosetta Stone.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

you might get to see both at once if you go to the British museum, right?

Wiata78's avatar

I did indeed see both there, many moons ago.

Football season coming soon

i think i saw that preseason games started. today at my morning cafe, i see 2 little kids walk in wearing their Buffalo Bills jerseys and the mom says they are super-ready for the start of NFL season.

Just did the regular family vacation to Tahoe that my father and his siblings pay for. After being hit with a couple of layoffs in the last three years (and being forced to take lower salaries in order to remain employed), I don't have the money to pay for vacations anymore.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

sounds nice that you are still able to get somewhere amazing like Tahoe. which part of Tahoe?

in HS a friend's parents would always invite us to a house they rented on Carnelian Bay right near the topmost part of the lake. the best of times ..

Tahoe City. Always been North Tahoe folks!

No true "vacation" this year. My son starts his senior year of high school tomorrow, so we took him on a lot of short trips to visit college campuses. Since Spring Break, we visited Washington State, Oregon State, Cal Poly Humboldt, UCSB, Colorado State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Ohio State and North Carolina State. We visited Wisconsin last fall and we are hoping to visit University of Florida in the next month or so. The trips were mostly just the two of us, which is pretty rare. He was getting tired of the trips by the end, but I loved every minute of the rare alone time with him.

we had a couple of those combo-trips too. where everywhere you went was mostly a college visit and a little bit of fun stuff in exploring a new place.

my favorite one was when we visited Edinburgh as older daughter thought they wanted to apply to at least one solid intl school.

still to come. 10 day hiking trip in Andes from Cusco to Machu Picchu. and a single day in Lima on the way back.

trying to decide if i want to lug my film camera around or not.
